Could tiny/smalls homes be a viable option in the UK?

Visited Japan last year and made friends with some locals. One of them who was from the countryside bought lived in a tiny home which was ridiculously cheap compared to a standard apartment. Basically said he would be there for 2-3 years, be able to save and then move onto something else.
Made me wonder if this could be a potential avenue for people in the UK? Getting incredibly difficult for anyone to get onto the property (particularly for a single person).
