Car Battery Jump Pack And Financial Preps Really Saved My Bacon This Week

A while ago I got a Noco battery jumper pack for my car. At the time it seemed like a good thing to have, but recently it really saved me a lot of hassle.
My battery in my car went from working well to a bad cell killing it in a few days. The first time my car didn’t start I had left the doors open to grab stuff while working on a project so I thought I just had left the lights on or something.
The next day I was in the mountains driving on a back road and had stopped. Car was totally dead after only being parked for 10 minutes. That’s when I realized there was a real problem.
The thing was where I was has basically no traffic going by and it was in a cell phone dead zone for miles of hilly terrain. I’d have to walk at least 4 miles up a very steep hill just to get cell signal.
It was also 95 out and about 80% humidity, even with two bottles of water, electrolyte tablets, and a water filter on hand, that heat could catch up to you very quickly and be dangerous.
But with this jump pack it was literally a 2 minute operation to get back on the road. I drove right to an auto parts store and got a new battery into my car.
That was the second prep that saved me, I put aside $100 a month for car maintenance, so no big deal to buy the battery which are getting expensive!
I don’t often hear these thing mentioned so thought I’d share, plus I could get on with my day without any fuss, had a great rest of my day. The alternative would been 2 hours of walking, 1-2 hours of waiting for a jump, and my whole day off would have been wasted.
If nothing else happens, life is better being prepared.

I've been putting off buying a jumper for awhile now. This is exactly the sort of story I needed lol
echelon1776@reddit
I know i'm 2 days late but Noco is on sale for Amazon prime day today. About $20 off the model I've had in my cart for months.
Provia100F@reddit
The new lithium ion ones are great, they even serve as a giant-ass battery bank for charging USB items if needed. I can recommend the Gooloo brand, I think project farm did a video on them.
420BlazeIt187@reddit
Gooloo usually has sales going on. I would keep an eye on it during prime week if you are considering purchasing one. I think i snagged it for like $50 off or something.
RoundBottomBee@reddit
Gooloo have the project farm seal of approval, too.

I keep one in my truck. Several years ago I worked night shift in winter. Came out and my truck wouldn't start. I was parked facing a grass median that is about 15 feet wide. Cars on each side of me but I don't know who owns them.
If I wanted a jump I'd have had to find someone inside the building, have them pull their vehicle around, push my truck out of the space, and then get a jump.
Instead, I popped the hood, threw my jump starter on, and started my truck. Took me less time than walking back into the building, much less all that other hassle. I've used it to help a couple of other people out as well.
I bring it in and throw it on the charger two or three times a year. Oh, and you can use it to recharge usb items like phones.
slowwburnn@reddit
I've got a Halo brand jump pack that I swear by. Second I've owned, the first was gifted to me and was eventually stolen. I must have used it at last 50 times for myself, friends, and strangers.
They have a few models, some have tire inflators and some have a limited-power AC outlet. Some even have both. All have USB ports and an LED that provides enough light to find the tire stem or battery terminals even if all of your other lights fail.
jadedunionoperator@reddit
They're truly amazing. I've used them genuinely hundreds of times between projects cars, my own needs Roth a shoddy Hyundai, and jump starting friends conveniently. Mine also has a built in flash light and some USB ports so served me well during a power outage.
I've got an Anker jump pack, which works well, however I've got a noco battery slow charger and that's truly the single best battery charger tech I've ever used.
dachjaw@reddit
Seriously? Hundreds of times? Wow.
huf757@reddit
Every car owner should invest in one and keep it charged. Noco jumpers are great and can pay for themselves with one bad battery experience. Especially with all the weirdos out there. Depend on yourself to get you out of a bad situation not others.
neverforgetreddit@reddit
I've been wanting one for years and the price had always put me off. I found on on Amazon for like $40. I've used it twice already.
GhostGrindIntel@reddit
Had not ever thought of that. Good tip.
Anonymo123@reddit
Kudos on the repair fund, they are definitely getting more expensive.
I have one in each vehicle and have gifted them several times to someone who needed it. make sure they are fully charged a few times a year and keep a spare set of jumpers just in case.i also got battery minders for vehicles that do drive as much.
Academic_Win6060@reddit
Glad it worked out well for you with little time wasted.
I keep a portable jump pack, as well as a tire inflator, in each vehicle along with some other supplies. I've use everything multiple times, and several times it was to help others.
otakotaku@reddit
Is it safe to keep this item in vehicle even during summer time?
MagicToolbox@reddit
I live in the middle Atlantic states. Car temp routinely gets above 120 Freedom units, even with an exterior sunshade. I have a NOCO in each of our four family vehicles. Each of us is able to self jump start, or help someone else. Charge life is shorter at these higher temps, as well as overall battery lifetime - but I have no concerns that they are unsafe.
If you ARE worried, buy a small cooler and store the unit inside. The insulation will slow down heating and cooling and minimize extreme temperatures.
jadedunionoperator@reddit
Not sure if it's recommended but I've stored one in my car for nearly a decade without issue
Pbandsadness@reddit
Walmart sells a device that is a combination of the two items.
ryan112ryan@reddit (OP)
Tire inflator was something I also purchased with it. I want to get a tire repair kit next.
arkadylaw@reddit
A jump stater is kinda like an airbag. You almost never need it, but that one time it does its job, it saves life.
LuckyMinusDevil@reddit
That jump pack is clutch for quick restarts. For longer roadside emergencies or car AC in heat, I throw a small portable power station in the trunk, to run a fan and phone charger without draining your car battery.

This is the Way
Remarkable_Ad5011@reddit
Anytime I travel I try to remember to bring one of my NOCO jump packs. They are awesome! And even if not using it for starting a vehicle, they can charge mobile devices or provide light/power to other 12v devices.
Pando5280@reddit
I've used my jump pack a handful of times. Great for living rural, especially if you live alone. I have also given a couple to female friends over the years as it prevents them from having to ask strangers for a jump in random parking lots if they can't start their vehicles.
ryan112ryan@reddit (OP)
I had not thought about the personal security side of things. I was seriously considering buying one for my sister and mother for Christmas.
snertwith2ls@reddit
If you do, make sure they know how to use them so they don't have to ask for help with that either!
Pando5280@reddit
Another gift idea is a small keychain flashlight. Had a couple people I have given them to say it really helped them out. (I tend to date women with anxiety and items that increase their autonomy or personal safety seem to be appreciated)
readdy07@reddit
I have also put one in my gf’s car and whenever she kills her battery (regularly enough) I have been getting her to do the whole jump process so she very familiar with it. She’s totally rocking it now.
Also been trying out a little o-light keychain light and it’s brilliant. Only cost about $16 AUD so about $10 USD. Will be ordering one for gf too.
Mavs-bent-FA18@reddit
Its too fuckin cold here 6 mo of the year or I totally would
ryan112ryan@reddit (OP)
I bought one that was basically two sizes larger than I needed, then I have it in a insulated bag that I nest in my car. I'm in the Carolina's so it's not too cold here, but I saw zero drop during the winter months beyond normal.
Mavs-bent-FA18@reddit
We go a month at -20 or so at a time
shikkonin@reddit
Even the lithium ones have problems at -25°C for weeks or months...
heatherjasper@reddit
Continually check on it and charge it if needed.
Ok_Candidate7759@reddit
I love my jump pack too. Saved a bunch of people with it. Saved my ass too.
everyviIIianislemons@reddit
we have the Stanley FatMax jumper (it also has USB ports and an air compressor), 100% worth the money for the peace of mind!!
lozerette@reddit
We recently moved, and discovered while on vacation that we hadn't put the jumper back in the truck we were driving. >.<
Fortunately it wasn't our vehicle that was dead, so we were able to assist the other person still, but felt really dumb for not checking that before we left!
karebear66@reddit
I have the same battery charger for my car. I tow a trailer for camping. I thought it would be a good idea. I haven't needed it yet, but while I was camping on a river, I guy needed to jump his jet ski. I was happy to help.
androgenoide@reddit
Funny thing... Years ago I found myself having to run test equipment as I was driving so I ran a direct cable (well, actually through a circuit breaker) to the battery so I have a cable with multiple connectors under the carpet in the passenger seat. I don't need it for that any more but I was recently pleased to find that I can now use one of those jump packs without getting out of the car. I was afraid that it would pop the breaker but it turns out that it only has to bring the car battery up enough to start and that really only takes a few minutes.
ResponsibleBank1387@reddit
Just realizing you may need these, makes you think. Which is good, think about all the little things that will help you later.
Hom3ward_b0und@reddit
I have combo jump starters + air pump on both our vehicles. Saved us a couple times, and have helped strangers also. 👍️
LaGrrrande@reddit
I've definitely found myself using the air pump function way more than the jump-start on mine over the past ~15 I've used them.
Thoth-long-bill@reddit
Do I have to charge it before I put it in the car? I just unboxed mine?
readdy07@reddit
Generally all battery devices need fully charging when new. There laws around the import/ transport of batteries that they aren’t to be fully charged before selling at retail.
Paranormal_Lemon@reddit
Lithium ion batteries come from the factory will partial charge because they last longer. Lead acid batteries come fully charged.
Thoth-long-bill@reddit
Makes sense. Thanks
andrewdiane66@reddit
I've given a few as gifts - one person circled back months later letting me know they used it (dead battery).
RockyRidge510@reddit
Happened to me back in May, without the added “4 mile walk” potential headache. I went to the grocery store, truck struggled to start in the driveway but otherwise operated fine. Did my shopping and went to leave, truck chugged once and then nothing. I was very happy I had my little emergency jump box with me, like you said it was just a two minute self rescue and on my way to buy a new battery.
gadget850@reddit
I keep a jumper/compressor in each vehicle.
bigbadDeadpool@reddit
Bought a Nebo assist air. Needed to inflate a tire, didn't function properly... Reached out to nebo and the webshop, got a replacement within a week and this thing works like a charm. They stand behind their product, and asked me for a chance to prove themselfs. I gave them that chance and they came through, so I can recommend them!
humidsputh@reddit
Every member of my family has one in their car.
I keep them in the original cardboard box, and sharpie the date when I charge them up.
As magical as they are, they will not last forever. In the 10 years I have been carrying them in the truck, I have had 4 that the batteries swelled up and broke apart the plastic case. Despite this, I just replace them and move on.
control-_-freak@reddit
Anyone thinking of buying a jumper pack, I will highly suggest you to watch Project Farm's reviews. This is his most recent on jumpers - https://youtu.be/jlK7UWHD3sY
Longjumping-Army-172@reddit
I recently bought a Stanley Fat Max jumper with USB ports. It's too big to fit in either vehicle regularly, so it stays under the bed (charged) for blackouts.
Don't judge me, it was bought on Day 2.5 of a three-day blackout that was projected to last as much as eight days...
Once I get the generator (also bought post-blackout) paid off, I'll probably get a Noco-type jumper for the family SUV.
Financial preps are also underrated. Try to get the savings built back up after vacation followed by a drop in hours at work. Also looking into another credit card.
OSUBonanza@reddit
I've owned one of those for almost a decade now and they are worth the size. On multiple occasions we have needed them in remote settings in the National Parks, someone leaves a door open on the truck or unexpected low air after a significant temperature change. Not to mention power outages, for which a fully charged battery can recharge your phone like 10 times.
Longjumping-Army-172@reddit
I've heard pretty good things, and I plan on taking it with on camping trips. The Noco looks like a better option to live in the Jeep, though.
sawotee@reddit
I certainly could have used one last year.
Bought my first car (used) and we had a severe cold snap. Had a doctor's appointment that morning. Car wouldn't start. Battery was older than Methusalah. Missed the appointment and had to catch an Uber to buy a battery. Round trip Uber cost was a bit more than the jumper.
deliberatelyawesome@reddit
That is prepping work at its finest.
Practical and helpful in actual life. Well done.
Tessatrala@reddit
I have a jumper pack and also the regular cables. I haven't used my jumper pack yet but I did loan it to my neighbor and he used it.
joelnicity@reddit
That’s a good story and something really good to keep in mind
