In your opinion, what is the best looking “regular traffic” car ever?
Posted by noobcodes@reddit | askcarguys | View on Reddit | 298 comments
“Regular traffic” meaning a car the average person could afford at the time of its production.
There are so many possible answers, I’m interested to hear your guys’ opinions.
I’d cast my vote for the Nissan 240sx hatchback, but I’m a sucker for anything 90s JDM.
RangerHikes@reddit
The B6 passat
F-LA@reddit
Miatas, NA-ND, are pretty good examples of this. Nine years later, the ND still looks anything but dated. It's a really solid contemporary design that you can buy used for \~$25K.
Studio_Life@reddit
I daily an NC PRHT, and get at least one complaint a day from strangers about it.
reidlos1624@reddit
You buy new for less than the avg price of a new car too. It's really just a fantastic deal for what you get. The fact that little ole Mazda can provide this car, reliably, where every other manufacturer can't as a standalone model is nuts. Toyota/Subaru get close but they have to share just to get it to market.
HandyMan131@reddit
The ND with the hardtop is beautiful! It’s a shame the hard top kinda ruins the ethos of the Miata, because it looks so damn good.

I get that the parameter was a car the average person could afford at the time, but I find these look nicer than 90% of what’s on the road these days
Nervous-Deal-8765@reddit
I love mine to death, first car I ever had and still got it. Paint is fading on the hood though. Thinking of repainting it.
doc_holliday112@reddit
Ive got both. An avus blue e39 m5 and i was lucky to find a mint 30k mile 2004 e46 325 that im using as my daily. To me they are much more satisfying to drive than most boring new cars.
taweret_352@reddit
lucky guy! I have a f30 335i (manual at least), and was close to buying a 330ci & a 540i at different times. their styling is timeless
southpark@reddit
e46 could be had in affordable trims (325/318) and was for sure a good looking design in the early 00s and there were many on the roads will almost 2 million produced and sold during their production years.
damnimbanned@reddit
E46 was the pinnacle of BMW, greatest car they ever made.
Potential-Ant-6320@reddit
You can find clean lower trim e46 coupes that are affordable enough to daily drive 150k more miles. A low mileage M3 is so valuable and special you can’t drive it every day.
threadward@reddit
Dude on e46fanatics site has about 650k miles on his last I checked. Use kburger
jarede36@reddit
I do love a nice e36 m3.
Skodakenner@reddit
They were absolutly everywhere here and they are so good to drive. I never was a bmw guy but when i came across a cheap e39 i was converted. Now i have 2 e39s standing around and if id have the space id buy more of them

The last gen Mazda6 looked way more expensive than it was.
SmirnOffTheSauce@reddit
Eh it kinda looks like any other Mazda to me. Nice cars in my experience, but not exactly expensive looking.
TroyeSavant@reddit
Nah I’ve been driving a 2018 signature for 5 years and still get compliments on it. Regular people do think it’s expensive. Once someone asked if I was a luxury chauffeur I was like you can’t be serious
SmirnOffTheSauce@reddit
Ha ha I mean I’ve had regular people think my BRZ was some exotic car, so I guess I could see that.
Metsican@reddit
Another great example of a relatively accessible car that looks amazing! The 86 Hakone edition definitely evokes Lotus and other classic 2-door sports cars: https://www.caranddriver.com/photos/g64342114/2025-toyota-gr86-hakone-edition-exterior-gallery/
SmirnOffTheSauce@reddit
Oh hell yeah, I forgot about that amazing color scheme.
nedal8@reddit
Lol, just brought back a memory. I bought a 99 I30 for 2700 bucks. It had about 200k miles on it. Drove to a friend's house and her son was so exited and surprised. "Uncle bought a limo!?" LOL
cantonese_noodles@reddit
I have to disagree, the new 3 definitely looks more expensive than it actually is. I think most trims come with leather seats too lol. Can't tell me the CX-90 doesn't look like a Lexus competitor.
cyprinidont@reddit
MS6 are barely flashier than most modern cars, you never see them.
Crayondetailnstuff@reddit
MS6 is great fun, couldn’t call it regular traffic because the maintenance will put most people solidly into the can’t afford it slot.
cyprinidont@reddit
But it looks like regular traffic.
Crayondetailnstuff@reddit
Agreed, not many people would know the car is quick, I’ve got a cst5 turbo on mine and I wouldn’t call it fast.
cyprinidont@reddit
But you're right that they're not reliable, or at least I imagine. I've never seen a speed 3 in full working condition lol. One of my clients blew his up in 30k miles.
Crayondetailnstuff@reddit
Mazda dropped the ball on a lot with those engines. Mines reliable now just I’m 25kish in parts into the car and I am not making more than 100hp more than stock
cyprinidont@reddit
I think it's a combo job of Mazda and the owners 🤣
Nobody buys a Mazdaspeed to NOT zoom zoom.

Just yesterday I had a girl ask me "So what is your dream car?" and I told her "Well, funny enough, this WAS my dream car, since I was 19 years old". 2018 6 GT.

Maybe now that I checked that box I can start dreaming of.............. I'm open to suggestions, idk. This is America, after all, Dream Big!
moles-on-parade@reddit
Buddy of mine has a red-on-tan stickshift model and it's about as splendid a midsized sedan as I could justify buying. I'm still bummed that Mazda never imported the wagon variant to the US.
ingannilo@reddit
That wagon is soooooo sexy. I'd be all over that shit if they came stateside
Apprehensive_Bit_176@reddit
Me too bother, would kill for a standard wagon 6. Wouldn’t need another car for the rest of my life.
Aside from maybe a Miata
flipmatthew@reddit
I promised myself in 2029 I would import one. It's the only car the wife is on board with me purchasing as I already have 3

incredible value and reliability.
WinterV6@reddit
I am slowly seeing them with classic vehicle plates and it scares me.
I would also like to add in the 3rd gen TL
Prestigious_Tiger_26@reddit
I've owned both and I agree. Very handsome vehicles.
WinterV6@reddit
Which one do you like better?
Prestigious_Tiger_26@reddit
Driving dynamics, the TSX. For comfort, the TL. Looks, it's a toss up, but I think the TL type S is a sexy beast, so TL. The facelifts for both versions are definitely better than the pre-facelifts.
DTvn@reddit
3G TL’s with the factory A-Spec kit look so good. Such a nice sleek car and some of the best OEM wheels
Famous_Bit_5119@reddit
The only vehicle I regret selling.
reidlos1624@reddit
I really love the current Gen Mazda 3 Hatchback. It's a bit awkward at some angles but realistically I don't think any brand comes in as aesthetically pleasing as current Mazdas do at the price they're sold at.
Even their SUV/crossovers punch well above their weight in looks, and the Miata is obviously one of the best looking cars at one of the best price points.

Yep, exactly.
experimentalengine@reddit

Mk5 is a regular sight for the sf Bay Area
drinkdrinkshoesgone@reddit
I see the new Nissan Z as regular traffic here in western WA. I dont see too many MK5 Supras though. When they first came out I saw them nearly every day.
J-Rag-@reddit
Ah gotcha. I only see one of them maybe once a month where I'm at. And maybe once a week when I was living in Portland.
WestAuxG@reddit
Not long ago they were though
BJTC777@reddit
Not really, they're sports cars.
B5_S4@reddit
They're not, and never were. The Supra was a GT car.
BJTC777@reddit
Right, but my point was it's not traffic.
CloudsTasteGeometric@reddit
No, the weren’t.
When the MKIV was new it was slightly more expensive than the MKV, adjusted for inflation. Even the MKI, which was little more than a sports appearance package cost as much as the 4 cylinder MKV Supra.
To be fair, that’s about the cost of the average midsized crossover with a handful of options and trim, but they still wouldn’t be called “regular traffic cars.”
WestAuxG@reddit
Guess it depends where you live man
J-Rag-@reddit
About what, 25-30 years ago? Eh fine I'll play along. My favorite regular traffic car is a 2006 Ford GT
WestAuxG@reddit
Yea that's not that long at my age 🥲
J-Rag-@reddit
No. But still wouldn't consider any of them a regular traffic car today.
pfcgos@reddit
Tbf, the OP dies say "at the time it was created" so, while my 65 Mustang wouldn't be a great daily commuter these days, it fits the rules of the question.
J-Rag-@reddit
Yeah I missed that time of production line. That's my bad
pfcgos@reddit
It happens. No biggie
rpitcher33@reddit
"Regular traffic car- meaning a car the average person could afford at the time of is production"
Supra fits that bill. The $120k GT does not. If you're going to play along, you have to read the rules first...
Solid choice, though.
J-Rag-@reddit
Eh okay fine I missed that part. I'd still argue a supra isnt a regular traffic car. Heck even the new ones you dont see much of em.

Second-gen Taurus -- 1992-1994
Second-gen Crown Victoria -- 1998-2012
Third-gen Ford Ranger -- particularly 2006-2012
KungLa0@reddit
3rd gen rangers are awesome to me, I bought one last year, just a timeless shape.
jckipps@reddit
I like how they resembled miniature super-duty trucks. Big truck styling, just 'gently compressed'.
I wish that compact trucks would do that today too, instead of whatever styling joke the new Ranger is.
KungLa0@reddit
Yeah the Maverick suffers from the same thing, they tried so hard to differentiate it from the F150/Ranger, I miss when they all basically shared the same grill styling.
Ok-Business-3396@reddit
Disgusting list tbh…
jckipps@reddit
The OP asked us for our opinions, and you've given yours. But do flesh it out further, and tell me what cars you would pick instead.

Other than the Kia badges, a Kia Stinger is a damn fine looking automobile.
experimentalengine@reddit
They’re nice enough that someone who would never buy a Kia would consider it (but then back out because it’s a Kia), but too nice for someone who would drive a Kia. That’s why they didn’t sell well. I’m half joking, but only half.
sellursoul@reddit
This car got me into a Kia dealer car fact when it was time to buy a minivan for my wife. I was impressed with the features and styling of the stinger so I wanted to check out the van. The sales people were so bad that we left without even seeing the interior.

Second generation Trans Am, easily. Smashing good looks and high production numbers, they were reasonably priced and the coolest car on the road.

Porsche 944
LeadfootYT@reddit
Where do you live where a 944 is regular ass traffic? Berlin in 1989?
PuzzleheadedOwl1191@reddit
Southern California. Back in the 80s-90s they were as normal as Hondas.
LeadfootYT@reddit
You might want to check a calendar, ideally while sitting down…
PuzzleheadedOwl1191@reddit
Meaning, they were normal back when they were fairly new and survivors are even more “normal” (not precious) now. Specific enough for you, champ?
LeadfootYT@reddit
That’s not how the aging of mass-produced products works. Cars do not become more common as time goes by, and this question isn’t being asked in 1985 is it, grandpa?
PuzzleheadedOwl1191@reddit
You just woke up looking for conflict, didn’t you? You’re fun.
LeadfootYT@reddit

All growing up I used to think I liked the 57 more than the 55 or 56, but somehow in my older age I find the 57 a bit tacky and think the 55 is probably the best or the 56 if you like a bit of tacky. The 57 is full on tacky. Besides maybe the 57 black widow. That is just badass.
waynofish@reddit
I'd take a 2 door hardtop of any of them. But I still prefer the fins and the grill/bumper of the 57, even though they are very ubiquitous in any classic car gathering.

I think the VW mk4 R32 was a stunner out of the showroom and with VERY little modification was crazy good looking.
A little on the fancier end but all the US spec e36 and e46 BMW 3 series (sans maybe the 318i hatch). The base trims were relatively achievable and I’d be hard pressed to argue a 328i/330i wasn’t stunning to look at or drive.

scottwax@reddit
Turbos fail and the infotainment system is wonky. And no real updates in 10+ years.
AMSAK@reddit
For me it was the hideous and slow infotainment and the general feel and lack of features on the inside. The infotainment got faster around 2019 I believe, but the look remained the same. The car was discontinued in 2022, and even in that year it had the same backup/360 camera as my first EX35 in 2008, along with the same Engine Start button and other pieces on the inside. And I really wanted a convertible Q60 like its predecessor which never happened.
bimmervschevy@reddit
Like a lot of other Infinitis, they just never updated it. Lest we forget, the G35 was genuinely 4 years ahead of the Germans in performance when it released in 2003 (2001 in Japan as the Nissan Skyline), but Nissan just let it rot as the Germans got faster and faster.

The current generation (2022+) Prius.
Fight me, but the damn things are literally head-turners; they look like wee Lambos.
Dunno, but maybe it's also the sheer stunning contrast in design compared to previous generations of the Prius or anything else Toy Yoda makes.
Toyota will probably screw it up before this generation ends with a bunch of stick-on plastic BS from Pep Boys, and then make the sixth generation look awful, but DAMN did they ever hit it out of the park for this generation of their lil' grocery getter.
Kia/Hyundai also have serious styling game, and have for quite a while. Look at the Seltos or Niro, for example. I mean, the Carnival makes a minivan look pretty damn good. Now if they could just raise the rest of their game to match...

I remember seeing it when my dad bought it home brand new and I was stuck staring at it for hours.

Grand Nationals were 14k-15k when new and the average single yearly income in the USA was 17k-18k at the time, for couples/families it was usually closer to 30k. Most people post college could realistically afford to buy a GN so I'm going with that because those are gorgeous cars.

Mid-size vehicles in the ‘60s and ‘70s, like the Chevelle, Cutlass, Skylark, Fairlane, Maverick, Challenger, Duster, and on and on. Weren’t as expensive as the full-size, somewhat smaller, but could be outfitted with any number of options. Just my view…
bvcspecs@reddit
Completely agree- late 60s thru late 80s - Chevelle , Cutlass, Nova, Camaros, Firebirds, Monte Carlos, El Caminos , Buick Regal, Datsun&Nissan 240, 280Z , early Maximas and C10 Chevy, Ford F100 - all common and bad ass.
A_locomotive@reddit
Last gen Oldsmobile Auroroa. Those were great looking cars. Of the cars from the jellybean era IMO it was by far the best one. I still think it looks good compared to modern cars.

(If we stretch the meaning of average person, then the Jaguar XJ40 is my pick for the best looking regular car.)

Regular traffic? I'm am going to call out the volvo 850/S70. Square and upright, just styled enough to be interesting, and super comfy on city streets and the highway. Probably the best seats I ever sat my ass in.
