This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post.
Examples of questions suitable for here:
- Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
- I'm thinking of getting a ≤$300 graphics card. Which one should I get?
- I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case ≤$50
Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

I'm looking to build a budget gaming PC that can play titles at 1080p. Doesn't really have to max out the graphics settings with super high FPS, just staying above 60FPS most of the time is good enough. I'm thinking of getting a B580 but the question is what CPU to pair it with.
The options are either a i5-12600KF or 7600x but I can get the Intel with the mobo and DDR4 ram for $100 less. Am I right to think it's not worth the money to go for the Ryzen?
djGLCKR@reddit
It'd work, but assuming you're okay with the lack of an upgrade path, although DDR4 support lets you save some money there. On the other hand, the AM5 option would let you upgrade the CPU in the future without having to replace the motherboard (at least for one more CPU generation, maybe two).

I want a PC case thats got alot of width/depth, just something kinda fun. I was hoping for something with six fan slots on the bottom and six fan slots on the top. I am wondering if I need to make something custom to do this. Are there any PC or server cases that could accommodate this idea and atleast an ATX mobo? My idea is to effectively make a vertical wind tunnel fresh air sucked in through the bottom and blasted out the top.
djGLCKR@reddit
The closest thing that comes to mind is a custom Storinator or similar rack chassis (4U and only supports 3 front fans plus a rear exhaust without some modding), or something like the old SMA-8 from CaseLabs (check JayzTwoCents' Skunkworks project, and at best, it supports a couple of quad rads at the bottom).
Still, at best, you're looking at something custom-made if you want to accommodate 6 fans in a row for some arcane reason, especially if liquid cooling is not part of the plan

i've been out of the pc building community for awhile now. I current own the Samsung SSD 850 EVO 500GB and looking to upgrade to another one thats 500GB-1TB. What are some popular brands and products for SSD nowadays?

1 TB SSD cost less than $50 now? Wow, i expected inflation would have raised the prices. thanks!
TemptedTemplar@reddit
Samsung, Teamgroup/T-Force, SK Hynix, Kingston, Western Digital, and Seagate. Truthfully, there is enough quality components floating around that lots of companies can make a quality drive, just as easily as a very well known company can make a cheap crappy drive.
When shopping for SATA SSD's you really only need to look for TLC vs QLC, which is how many layers of flash memory is used in their storage. The more layers a device features, the more likely it is to have a shorter lifespan.
When shopping for M.2 drives the layers don't matter as much as you can compare them by Speed, Input/output operations (Random IOPs), Terabyte written capacity (TBW), or warranty. DRAM or HBM inclusion is nice to have but not a requirement unless you absolutely need maximum speed for every possible operation, including larger file transfers.
ChuckMauriceFacts@reddit
Forget brands and look for good price/GB/performance from reputable testing labs. The cheapest M.2 SSDs are around $0.06/GB, but I recommend going for PCIE 4.0 SSDs that are slightly more expensive ($0.07-$0.09) but have better endurance and performance.
My top picks at the moment at 1TB:
SK hynix Platinum P41
Crucial T500
Western Digital WD_BLACK SN850X
Samsung 990 PRO (too expensive at its regular price, but regularly goes on sale)
If you can stretch the budget a bit ($120+), 2TB SSDs are cheaper than 2x1TB drives. For example the SK hynix Platinum P41 is $75 for 1TB, but only $130 for 2TB, and it's slighly faster.

Hi. I've recently upgraded my PSU (ASUS TUF 850W Gold 3.1) in preparation for the new 5070 Ti which arrived today, now I'm having a problem where gpu fans are spinning but I'm getting no signal to the monitor, and the VGA LED lights are on in the motherboard. I've updated BIOS 6 months ago. Do faulty gpus typically have their fans spinning? or could it the psu or its cables?
masterax2000@reddit
Hello. I'm trying to make a simple animation of a bouncing ball in Blender, but it's so slow to render that it's not really feasible. I think my problem is my graphics card, it's a Radeon(TM) RX 550. My understanding is that this is very old and low-power.
I don't really know anything about computers. I don't need anything amazing, just something that'll let me use blender, and play well with most modern video games. What should I go for? The most I can afford is around 200 dollars.
Additionally, do I need to worry about a newer GPU potentially being incompatible with the other parts of my computer?
LostTheElectrons@reddit
I don't know much about Blender rendering. Is it possible to select whether you are doing CPU VS GPU rendering?
The RX550 is not a very powerful card either way, so an update will help you a lot. The main limitation for you will be the power supply you have, and whether or not you have the appropriate power connectors. The RX 550 likely doesn't require any extra power cables, so you may not have them available in your current build.
At your price range I would definitely suggest buying used if you are comfortable with it. You'd probably be able to get around 3060Ti level of performance, which would on its own be about 7x faster than your RX550.
Your CPU is probably fine for now, especially compared to your GPU. However your motherboard likely supports many faster chips that you can essentially just trade it after a motherboard bios update.
Markonasse@reddit
Good day. I have a question about PCI-E. I have an MSI b450 tomahawk motherboard and as I understand it has 24 PCI-E lines. If I install an M2 SSD in the M2 slot, and another M2 SSD in PCI_E4 (Pci-E 2.0 4x), will PCI_E1 (3.0 16x) be converted to PCI-E 3.0 8x or will everything remain as it was?
LostTheElectrons@reddit
With the 24 lanes from the CPU, 16 go to your GPU, 4 to the M2 slot, and the remaining 4 go to the chipset. The chipset will handle the rest of the PCI-E slots and will be slightly worse than going direct to CPU. You can use PCI_E4 as a 2.0x4, but then you can't use PCI_E2 or PCI_E3.
Markonasse@reddit
So I can install a second M2 ssd via a pcie adapter without losing pcie 3.0 x16? Sorry for the stupid questions, I'm just a complete idiot.
LostTheElectrons@reddit
Yes
Markonasse@reddit
Thank you very much my friend
n7_trekkie@reddit
Refer to the motherboard spec sheet. Many slots doing connect to the CPU via pcie lanes. They connect to the chipset, and the chipset connects to the CPU, and the chipset has its own pcie lanes to divvy up. If your spec sheet doesn't mention anything about disabling or downgrading slots on the shed sheet, then it won't

Hello, I'm a manager at a restaurant - the restaurant PC is old and sluggish, looking to present our owners with a budgeted build of ≤$400. Intended goal is longevity and eliminating freezes from having a few excel sheets open.
I'm thinking a good processor with on-board graphics and 16GB of ram. Already have peripherals - wondering if it's worth it to build, or if a good pre-built would do the job. Currently running an AMD A9-9425 R5 with 8GB ram. Let me know if I should move this to a thread. TIA
LostTheElectrons@reddit
I would look at Mini-PCs. They are cheap and power efficient.

What should I upgrade first? I am a video game artist by profession, so I'm running quite a few processor heavy programs. I last built my PC around 2018 but I'm already starting to hear the chug of the fans as I swap between for example Substance Designer and Unreal and Photoshop. When I do use unreal, I get the "out of vram" error quite often.
I have

First, those calculators aren't particularly reliable. You're better off taking the total estimated TDP for your build and adding a healthy overhead, then getting a quality PSU that covers that amount. That's still at best a rough estimate, but it's probably better than whatever method that site uses.
Puget Systems designs workstations for a variety of use cases, and publishes hardware recommendations based on their testing. Here's their page for UE: https://www.pugetsystems.com/solutions/real-time-engine-workstations/unreal-engine/hardware-recommendations/ and there's another one for Photoshop. I'm not familiar with SD though so I'm not sure if they have one for it or not. Reading through those might give you a better idea of what you need and what parts are most important for you.
My hunch though is that a better CPU will give you the biggest bang for your buck, though it also sounds like you would be better off with a GPU that has at least 16GB of VRAM. That said, it's hard to give recommendations for you without knowing how much you want to spend.
Motatopotato@reddit
I'm not looking to throw the baby out with the bathwater at the moment. Doing some small research I see that most of my comments are quite good despite their age. I see that my GPU is probably the most out of date hardware though and because I'm definitely heavily reliant on it, I can probably go and update that well enough. Answered my own question haha
Ockvil@reddit
'Quite good' is relative, and a game dev/media workstation needs much more performance than most use cases. The i7-8700 was a good CPU in its time, but more modern workstation CPUs far outperform it.
As for a GPU upgrade, a 5060ti 16gb is probably the minimum you want to get. The 5070ti is also an option, but I would avoid the 5070 as it only has 12gb of VRAM, likely the same as your 3060ti. (There were some 3060ti 8gb GPUs but they weren't popular so it's unlikely you have one of them.)
Piece_Zoro@reddit
If you are a video game artist, and you have a lot of rendering work, go for a good gpu and ram, I would suggest a 4070 ti or a 4080 would be good, and DDR5 ram provides much more speed. Your processor is bit old too as it's of 8th gen, you can consider upgrading it as well if you feel throttling issues.

should i go for the nzxt c850, or the vetroo 850 g5?, these are my two choices for a white 850w psu, i was originally gonna go with the rm850e but i hear it has coil whine and my ears are sensitive lol. I have a 9070xt and a 5800x which im sure a b+ psu will be fine for, but in the 1000w category i hear that the nzxt one is one of *the* best psu's available there?, and i figure the same will probs apply for the 850w category too. It is an a+ which is obviously good, but i feel that might be unnecessary for my build, lmk if you guys have any suggestions(i'll go for a black one aswell if its at a lowish price), i wouldn't usually go for an unknown brand like vetroo but the psu has a good rating and they seem well documented (and its a really good deal)
givemehutaoandxiao@reddit
i'm probably gonna just go for the nzxt lol, a+ is worth it for a little more money

Hi, I have a question about fan hub and argbs. I have a 3 fan Darkflash DM12F that came with a fan hub and an Asus B550m-A wifi ii mobo that comes with 1 gen2 argb 5v 3 pin. After setting up all the fans into the fan hub, I also have the 5v3pin for my AIO cooler fans daisy chained into one of the 5v3pin in the same fan hub.
After that, I plugged in the m/b sycn connector to the 5v3pin in the mother board. However, when I click on the mb sync on the remote, it would only show a green light on all fans, including the AIO fans. I also tried checking Aura Sync but it's not syncing with the ram lights at all.
Am I missing something?

if you just want to play dota, get a GPU that's worse than your rtx 2070. something like a an rx580 will run dota 2 above 165FPS

I have a rig with a RX5700 in it, paired with a Ryzen 3600 and 16 gigs of 3200 mhz memory. It was working great but I'm running into a lot of GPU problems now (driver timeouts, repeated crashing, etc) but I'm not at a point where I can build a whole new rig. All I care about with replacing the GPU is having more than my current 8 gigs of vram and that it's a substantial enough upgrade. If I'm looking to spend about $300, what should I get? I don't play a lot of super heavy AAA titles like Warzone, I mostly play Horizon Zero Dawn and VRchat. I'm also fine with spending $200 used.
TemptedTemplar@reddit
At minimum, a ARC B580 or 9060xt 16gb, simply because those are the only budget cards both more powerful than your 5700, and offering more than 8GB of VRAM.
The 5060ti 16GB, RX 6700xt, 6750xt, 7700xt would be the next step up. But thats already in the $300 - $500 territory.
https://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/gpu-hierarchy,4388-2.html
Your non-xt 5700 is a little ways down on this list between the RTX 2060 and RTX 3060. While the XT model is on par with the 3060 and RX 6600xt.
Going to the first page of the hierarchy chart, you can find the RX 6600 and RTX 3060 at the bottom of the first table; so anything newer and of a higher class would be an upgrade.

The problem is pricing since the whole market is still pretty fucked just about everywhere. Prices have stabilized in the last few weeks, but nothing is cheap yet.

it doesn't really matter. get whichever is cheaper. if they're the same price, you can look at the subtimings, maybe one kit is better

Recently I made a full reinstall of windows on my PC considering I added a 2TB SSD to it.
When I loaded back everything seems fine except when I log into Windows both of my monitors are going black screen and then show windows again. It happens for a few mins then it stops and work perfectly normal.
I got all the drivers and windows updates. Honestly is it seems that it started doing so after updating my NVidia drivers.
Do you have any ideas what might be causing it?

Would a 1000VA/600W UPS suffice for 9070XT + 7700 gaming build?
It's just for micro power outages, not for serious usage when there's no power
TemptedTemplar@reddit
It should be fine. However I would normally pick the UPS rating based off of your PSU output, not your average usage.
Even if you don't need all of that wattage for split second outages, you would at least be covered for a minute or two under a full load, and lighter loads would give you even more time.

Do you already own the 14900k or motherboard?
Due Raptor lakes oxidation problems its hard to recommend if you are building from scratch. Intels Ultra 9 285k would provide similar or slightly better performance for less than $100 more, without the risk of killing itself from normal usage.
Intel should have a refresh lineup for the LGA1851 or 1700 socket here in a couple of months too if you were willing to wait for a small performance increase.

Is Bitfenix Whisper M 850w good for 5070ti? I have been using it for 7 years, I currently have 5700xt and 5800x installed.

Today I tried undervolting my 5900x and enabling XMP to get the full 3600mhz out of my ram, but I am now having issues with stuttering and freezes. I reset everything back to default values, but the stuttering continues. For the ram, I am trying to use XMP to run mfr suggested timing and voltage. I had XMP off before because I couldn't sort the stuttering issue, but now I can't get rid of it, even by disabling cmp. Crucial recommends 3600mhz at 1.35v, but the issues persist at these settings. I tried bumping the voltage to 1.4v and it seemed to help, but did not completely solve my issue. Should I bump it again to 1.45v? I have tried a bunch of stuff, and now I appeal to those more knowledgeable than me. Anyone have any ideas?

If you were moving in 3 months would you buy a RTX 5090 and use it now, or wait until after you move so that you only install it once and don’t have to unplug and replug it in when you take the videocard out to move?
Domowoi@reddit
I would install it right away. No way I'm waiting 3 months to only do a 5 minute job one time less.
InsertFloppy11@reddit
What? The main concern is having a huge ass gpu in the pcie slot, not the 12vhpwr...
TemptedTemplar@reddit
Moving how far? If you have to ship it, I would just wait.
If you are transporting it yourself, just get some extra supports or unplug the cable from the PSU end, not the GPU side.
Dave_TWIR@reddit
I'm trying to find the right X870/E board and I know for certain I'll never use wifi, and I will only use a single ethernet port which must be 10gig.
So first of all I'm a bit puzzled that all of the boards seem to have dual LAN and I can't see a purpose. Only one PC in my entire house has dual LAN and that's my firewall. I use switches for everything else so I just simply don't understand why dual LAN seems to be a requirent.
I'm also aware that the only board with onboard 10gig is the Asus Proart and that comes at a really hefty premium over other boards. There's entry level boards that seem to tick everything I need around £200, and not the £500 the proart comes in at.
So assuming I don't go with a proart and that I will add an x4 10g NIC into the build, is there anything about the wifi/ethernet configs on them that I need to be aware of?
I do understand that the boards seem to have differences in terms of what PCIe lanes are shared where so I'm trying to puzzle out what that might mean for me
TemptedTemplar@reddit
All consumer boards that offer a 10Gb port use a crappy Marvell ethernet controller which dies for a split second every couple of minutes. This isn't a huge issue for most tasks, but its a pain in the ass if you're streaming, gaming, or in a voice call.
Going with a dual or quad intel 10Gb NIC is a MUCH better option. The dual port NICs can be really cheap if you find them on ebay, ~$40 - $60.
IF the board is like the Pro Art (X670e) and shares its PCIe lanes between two PCIe slots, then you will need to enable Bifurication in the BIOS to use both slots at the same time.
Thats all you need to worry about.
Dave_TWIR@reddit
Yes, I feel I've already ruled out the only board with built in 10g and I have a few of thoise dual 10g intel NICs here, so I'd be using one of them.
Most boards seem to have 3 PCIe slots, and if I use the third it seems to not connect to the CPU, which suits me because I want to leave the main slot clear for x16.
So basically that's it then?

Hey, i could use some advice on my cpu,
Ryzen 7 7700 tray (205 euro), or pay 80 euro more for ryzen 9 7900 boxed, i will pair it probally with an rtx 5070ti (800 euro) and 64gb ddr5 except if by the time i buy the parts amd or nvidia has released something more attractive for the price of 800.
Just so you know my local prices before you suggest cpus: R5 7600x boxed = 270 euro R7 7800x3d tray = 335 euro (Boxed is 370)
I thought the 7900 could be maybe worth the 80 euro because its a mix of everything, not 32mb l3 but also not 96mb l3 but 64 instead, more cores and threads for a slightly worse single core perfomance compared with 7700.
