Anybody who's seen the Inbetweeners. What do you think of it?

British humour and tv is already quite different to what it's like in America. But I'm curious how a show like that would be received. Given it's very based on the British school experience and it's realism is what it's universally praised for. I wonder how people who've never lived thoses see it.
No-Boss-9618@reddit
British sitcom is better than US sitcoms . I am neither from US nor from UK.
TheRealTaraLou@reddit
I'm not sure why you got allrhe downvotes
TheRealTaraLou@reddit
Lots of us americans love british tv and comedy. That's why we always steal it and do shitty remakes
VisibleSea4533@reddit
Enjoyed it
RobotShlomo@reddit
I love the Inbetweeners.
Abdelsauron@reddit
I loved it. I think having friends like that in high school is something most men can find relatable.
treznor70@reddit
Just finished watching it for the 3rd or 4th time. Also have watched the movies. And Coupling, IT Crowd, and the British version of The Office (that one I do think the US version is better). Oh, and Derby Girls, not that it's British but same area.
It's funny. Not fall down laughing funny, but definitely funny.
Suspicious-Froyo2181@reddit
DG is British-produced.
treznor70@reddit
Didn't realize that, good to know.
CountChoculasGhost@reddit
I went down a rabbit hole of British TV a while back. The Inbetweeners, Fresh Meat, Skins (obviously not really a comedy), etc.
They are entertaining, but mostly just because I think the stories are good/funny. Didn’t really seem that strange or alien to me.
MrLongWalk@reddit
It’s not as alien or mystifying as you lot want it to be. It’s an edgy sitcom, nothing groundbreaking.
caiaphas8@reddit
I am fascinated to know what you think the exaggerated differences are
MrLongWalk@reddit
Most of it is just Brit’s telling themselves that most aspects of day to day life over there don’t happen elsewhere and certainly not in the US.
It took me about a week to convince my class that sitting down to eat dinner as a family was not strictly a British thing and that making fun of your teachers behind their back was also popular in the US.
caiaphas8@reddit
I feel like family meals and making fun of teachers are things that happen universally in near every culture, and that young people being a bit naive and thinking that American media is an accurate portrayal led to that misunderstanding
MrLongWalk@reddit
These were middle-aged folks.
GothHimbo414@reddit
It wasn't really as popular here as some other British comedies. Peep Show, The I.T. Crowd and The Might Boosh were relatively popular here.
Suspicious-Froyo2181@reddit
Peep show 💯
dystopiadattopia@reddit
Prime British cringe humor
Darmok47@reddit
Probably helps that a lot of people are discovering Peep Show after Jesse Armstrong did Succession on HBO.
U-1f419@reddit
Caught an episode once. Acting seemed good generally pretty solid jokes. There's obviously some cultural distance but it's not like it was shot on mars or something I was able to generally pick up the vibe.
LeviathanTDS@reddit
Overrated
Suspicious-Froyo2181@reddit
It was great, but I think Derry Girls was better.
MoonieNine@reddit
Derry Girls is a gem. We watched it all twice, and I recommended it to all of my friends. We are in our fifties, so we grew seeing The Troubles in the news. And the show is so hysterical. We love all of the characters.
Suspicious-Froyo2181@reddit
Too much outlandish stuff in The In-betweeners. Will/Neil's Dad scene, tramp shoes, getting "serviced" in the open gym, Neil walking around amusement park in speedo, etc. Too cringy, imo.
MoonieNine@reddit
Good to know. I haven't seen it yet, and we love British shows. But my spouse suffers greatly from second-hand embarrassment. Shows like Frasier are debilitating.
GingerMarquis@reddit
Aside from the slang, it’s very relatable. I had teachers who just hated me and bullied me too. Never heard anyone called a “grass”.
Suspicious-Froyo2181@reddit
We used "narc".
GingerMarquis@reddit
“Rat” but yeah
MoronLaoShi@reddit
Good show
Skipptopher@reddit
I absolutely loved it and I usually don't like British shows. The American version they tried to make was garbage.
dontforgettowriteme@reddit
I love The Inbetweeners! I like a lot of British TV. I just recently finished Upstart Crow and I miss it and recommend it to everyone. It's really good!
wormbreath@reddit
I loved it! Still do a rewatch every once in a while.

I really liked it, even the movie (the first, I think they tried to make more but they were pretty lazily written?)
There's definitely hyper-specific British humor quality to it at times, but anyone who has grown up around others like these characters, especially around the time it was written, can probably extract enough to get the underlying contexts.
I think it had some really good parts that explore the age group's worldview. Like going out with your friends, hoping to hook up but having dumb problems arise internally and externally, then having to deal with it.
The one thing that still sticks out in my mind though is the teacher, but its been a long time since I've watched so I might be misremembering, but that seemed very exaggerated in how unprofessional he was, but maybe that's where my American lack of context lies
docfarnsworth@reddit
I liked it, it's a little too focused on cringe humor for me. However, being a teen is often cringe. I think the UK version of the office over did it, but I like the inbetweeners when I was young. Peep show is still the best.
_Smedette_@reddit
It’s fantastic. We still quote “FRIEND” with two thumbs up.
Complex_Yam_5390@reddit
I binged it during COVID and laughed my ass off. Anything that's not exactly like in the US is easy enough to comprehend that it doesn't stop me from grokking the situations. I didn't like the movie as much, because of the poo scenes. Poo stuff makes me retch. I love Greg Davies, and so I devoured Man Down. Cuckoo was all right. I love Taskmaster and The Cleaner. Blake Harrison was great in The Increasingly Poor Decisions of Todd Margaret, too. I also liked Fresh Meat with Joe Thomas. I watch a ton of British content.
Outrageous-Score7936@reddit (OP)
I myself watched it just during the covid lockdown. I was quite sceptical at first. But the humour was so similar to what I had experienced at school. I was instantly hooked. I'm around 10 years younger than when it was set, but it filled a gap that was missed due to the school closures.
freedraw@reddit
It was on Netflix here back when it was airing. I thought it was hilarious. It had fans, but definitely more niche here than in the UK. My gf and I went to see the movie when it was released, but there were only like 5 other people in the theater and I think it only got a small release. I didn’t really find anything about the school humor difficult to understand or relate to. Like they wear uniforms and have a few slang terms we don’t use, but all the jokes still land.
shelwood46@reddit
It was moderately popular (the UK version) in the US, though probably not as big as it would have been years earlier when actual teens watched cable, like what happened with Skins. Also they tried to make a US version, since our schools and humor are quite different, it flopped badly, because it was awful (I did enjoy the US version of This Country, called Welcome to Flatch, that didn't stink but also was not a huge hit here). It should be noted that your schooling systems frighten and confuse us Americans just as much as our systems confuse you. A large percentage of Americans thought Rowling made up English boarding schools in their entirety.
Fantastic-Bit7657@reddit
I absolutely loved it, but I’m also a bit of an Anglo-phile
Apprehensive-Lock751@reddit
it’s crazy frog
dildozer10@reddit
A buddy and I sat down and binged the show while high one weekend about 5 years ago, it was decent, we had some good laughs. I think I would have enjoyed it more if I’d watched it while I was a teenager, it just didn’t feel relatable being in my mid 20’s.
Bonch_and_Clyde@reddit
It's pretty typical teenage cringe humor. I watched it a while ago. I liked it for what it was.
MrRaspberryJam1@reddit
I thought it was funny. There’s lots of great hilarious British shows. Peep Show is my personal favorite.
SignificantBends@reddit
I liked it, but I still can't figure out why anyone thinks that something as dumb and absurd as The Mighty Boosh is funny.
MattWolf96@reddit
I watched some of the US adaptation, I thought it was alright. Never seen the original.
Suspicious-Froyo2181@reddit
Don't base your opinion of it on the American version. British version is much better
bikinibeard@reddit
I watch a lot more British shows than American ones at the moment. Thanks for the rec!
Smooth-Abalone-7651@reddit
I’m a boomer and I thought it was pretty funny.
HairyHorseKnuckles@reddit
I love it. That fish scene had me in the floor crying with laughter
slippedintherain@reddit
I enjoyed it at the time - that was back in the day I was downloading dodgy links from LiveJournal communities for British shows. I haven’t watched since it first aired though.
rayybloodypurchase@reddit
Love it and it’s one I rewatch every few years. It’s not terribly unrelatable tbh.
ltsmash1200@reddit
I enjoyed it, but my wife and I generally enjoy British comedy. I can’t tell you how many people I’ve recommended Peep Show to who just couldn’t get into it.
geekycurvyanddorky@reddit
It was okay, just couldn’t get into it. I did watch every episode of My Mad Fat Diary though! I had never really enjoyed shows like it before, but I loved that one.
noir_et_Orr@reddit
I enjoyed it but man the brits are undefeated at coming up with disgusting slang for female genitalia. The episode with the French exchange student is great.
SippinOnnaBlunt@reddit
I liked it.
I like your comedies. “People just do nothing” is one of my favorite ones.
omgcheez@reddit
I watched it after hearing a fan of Community recommend it, and I enjoyed it.
Banana_Bish666@reddit
I watched it about 10 years ago and thought it was pretty funny. I like a lot of British comedy.
Chelseus@reddit
I’m from Canada and I loved it! I can’t remember how much I could relate to it though, it’s been a long time since I watched it. I can tell you I relate a lot to the Skins kids though.
DeanKoontssy@reddit
I saw it and enjoyed it. I was aware there were certain specific experiences being reference that weren't familiar to me, but a lot of the humor was much more universal.
MW240z@reddit
The movie was pretty funny. Could not get into the tv show. But do g get me wrong, it has its moments.
GreenCity5@reddit
Watched it in college. Felt very relatable to my college friend group haha
Steamsagoodham@reddit
It never really interested me
Zealousidealist420@reddit
Not that different from Americans. Not really "British", just regular things teenagers go through.
mrsrobotic@reddit
I watch a lot of British TV and didn't care for the Inbetweeners.
mustang6172@reddit
I watched the first episode and didn't care for it.
DRmonarch@reddit
Saw a single episode in 2010 and it didn't make an impression on me.
