ULPT: Dont like an influencer? Report them to the tax authorities
Posted by Routine-Crew8651@reddit | UnethicalLifeProTips | View on Reddit | 62 comments
Very few online creators are properly filing their taxes, and the local tax authorities all around the world are trying to crack down on this. If you’ve been personally victimized by an influencer, it’s likely that if you report them along with other people, they’ll be investigated. And if you live in the US, this means payday for you; the IRS has a whistleblower system, meaning that if you give this information to authorities, you may be in for a nice compensation.

How the hell does this have so many upvotes
ShrimpSherbet@reddit
Awww did your influencer-wifey ignore you on the stream chat today?
toolsavvy@reddit
The IRS can't and won't investigate someone for tax evasion JUST because you report them. You don't need hard proof but you do need real and actionable evidence of the tax fraud.
You: Investigate this youtuebe influencer for tax fraud!
IRS: Why?
You: Coz we all know youtube influences are known to commit tax fraud, right? Plus I don't like them!
IRS: LOL. Yeah, OK, little one. We'll get right on that and send you your whistleblower check ASAP.
If it were that easy everyone would report their enemies, IRS would have to hire 20x more workers and the whistleblower system would eventually just be done away with.
Try harder, much harder.
BlahblahblahLG@reddit
right this is so true, there keep being posts that are like just report them to the irs. like they for some reason think the irs has all the time and man power to do this. the irs does everything they can to not work.
SilkySmoothTesticles@reddit
It has to be welfare fraud or SSI.
If they are on any benefits and being an influencer, they can get thrown off their benefits if they make too much money from streaming/influencer garbage. The threshold is very low which is screwed up, but that’s a different story.
UnholyLizard65@reddit
Well to be fair they could easily do that. It is said that for every dollar invested into it, the government gets 6 dollars back. And the current administration defunded them too. Wonder if they are doing anything shady 💩
g2420hd@reddit
What about those tax gurus that recommend you bring a "business partner" to every dinner so you get a tax deduction lol
toolsavvy@reddit
That's very common and it's hard for the IRS to crack down on something like that.
g2420hd@reddit
Yeah but you've got them on video talking about it
GunBrothersGaming@reddit
If it was Mr. Beast yes.
Joe who has 100k subs and barely makes $6000 a year. No.
The bigger the fish the more ambitious the fisherman.
toolsavvy@reddit
IRS isn't going to investigate Mr. Beast because someone took a few minutes to file a whistleblower report with no actionable evidence. It doesn't work that way.
You: Investigate Mr. Beast for tax fraud. He's just has to be defrauding the IRS. He's got a lot of subs, that's my actionable evidence."
IRS: 🤣
Get a clue. The IRS already knows they can audit anyone, any time they want, they don't need a whistleblower's help unless they have proof or actionable evidence to make it easier for them to nab the person.
Miserable_Release808@reddit
Sorry mom and dad........
zachmoe@reddit
Correct, I once identified a non-profit basically running a political campaign for a candidate and reported them all, and they did nothing.
Ok-Faithlessness7812@reddit
next time call your state attorney general. in some states they regulate charities. good AGs will pursue nonprofits who conduct illegal activities
zachmoe@reddit
Yeah, something tells me with my attorney general being from the very same group that the candidate is from, it wouldn't get far.
toolsavvy@reddit
You missed the bus, like by 5 days.
Dos-Commas@reddit
OP is just salty about all the influencer lifestyle and making up shit on how to "get back" at them. Don't want to be "victimized" by influencers? Stop following them.
toolsavvy@reddit
It's THAT fucking simple.
SellingThat@reddit
Holup holup holup. The irs pays you for snitching?
BuildBreakFix@reddit
Influencer here…. YouTube, Facebook, Instagram (also Facebook), TikTok, and pretty much every other platform including sites influencers run affiliate links though like Amazon, Shopify, etc etc etc report income to the IRS and won’t payout until 1099’s are filled out. The IRS already knows and OP hasn’t a clue.
rinwasrep@reddit
Raise your hand if you’ve been *personally * victimized by Regina George.
WalterWilliams@reddit
If they aren’t filing taxes properly, it will automatically be flagged. Do you really think YouTube, twitch, etc. don’t report earnings/income/payouts to the IRS? There’s no hiding that income, it’s all recorded and reported.
random-guy-here@reddit
It's actually in the influences best interests to file.
Why?
YouTube (Etc.): We paid out $100,000 to "Dude"
Dude: Oh, I don't owe taxes on ALL of that, I had expenses. Cameras, Travel, Props, Fees Paid, Services hired, meals, rent etc.
So I only owe taxes on like $30,000 like a normal person!
jacob6875@reddit
Yeah this post makes no sense. Every major site reports income to the IRS.
Mysterious_Canary547@reddit
You’re an idiot.
snow-raven7@reddit
Instructions unclear, tried reporting Elon musk, why am I being arrested by agents of ICE?
soulself@reddit
Are you brown by chance?
snow-raven7@reddit
No I am a white Norwegian in the US. They will surely not deport me right? Right?
TheMoonwalkingAvatar@reddit
Do you happen to have a meme of JD vance?
snow-raven7@reddit
Yeah it's a harmless meme of JD vance. Surely The US government won't crack down upon it like china did for Winnie the pooh. US is the country of freedom afterall.
soulself@reddit
You're the wrong skin color for deportation. You're good.
senortipton@reddit
But not for political adversary work camps!
Desperate_Set_7708@reddit
Fucking Secret Service are now at my door.
theunixman@reddit
In the US this wouldn’t work because doge fired them all.
trustcircleofjerks@reddit
This is basically good advice, it just leaves out a couple of minor intermediary steps, including:
1-go to school and become a CPA
2-get hired by the influencer you want to screw over
3-get your hands on their real books so you can turn them over
So yeah, overall solid advice, I just wanted to clear up the procedure slightly.
amanuensisninja@reddit
Actual ULPT: Find out their taxpayer identification number, file tax quarterly tax paperwork for them that reflects every activity they post about on social media.
AlltheBent@reddit
ULPT; Unhelpful Life Protip
IRS is doing shit without a strong case worth dedicating time and resources towards it
comp21@reddit
In the same vein you're gonna have a very hard time convincing me Shien and Temu, which both recently started collecting sales tax, actually remits everything they collect back to the states.
IfYouGotALonelyHeart@reddit
I believe they call this “being a little bitch”. Snitches get stitches.

Case in point - The Belltown Hellcat, a.k.a. Miles.
appa-ate-momo@reddit
This has similar energy to the Great Thot Audit of the 2010s
jacob6875@reddit
Assuming the influencer is making money on something like Youtube, TikTok etc. they already report earnings to IRS.
Even places like selling on Ebay auto report it now.
NahikuHana@reddit
Wow ok, how do you know they aren't doing their taxes? Like what da f? Sure some very well may be cheating some are unknowingly not paying some taxes because the IRS makes everything so fucking easy /s, especially when you are making money in more than one jurisdiction.
If you don't like a particular influencer don't click on their videos
impalas86924@reddit
Offer free tax services. Do their taxes wrong. Go to IRS with the entire case on a golden platter
Super_Shallot2351@reddit
Such a weird lie
Dasrule@reddit
The IRS has been gutted and what’s left of their investigation staff is far too busy with much bigger cases. To get results go to the local tax authorities. They are less busy and much more desperate for the tax dollars.
runningvicuna@reddit
They have guns now.
CopingAdult@reddit
Disagree. Please don't involve the government in anything, ever. That only makes more government.
runningvicuna@reddit
If we have to have an IRS it’s best to weaponize it for our own purposes. That’s my money. They work for you me!
ImBored5336@reddit
Ok Ron Swanson
toolsavvy@reddit
Bud, this is reddit, big govt is good govt. You must be new to reddit.

Also If they are posting in another country contact the local visa authority. Its most likely they don't have the right type of visa

Influencers are a scourge
Strength_Various@reddit
Same for non-chain grocery stores, food trucks, individual contractors, and anywhere taking cash (or cash only)…
SoccerStix48@reddit
This is just narc behavior
ArtisticRiskNew1212@reddit
It’s a good way to deal with your enemies tho
Icy-Passage-3986@reddit
Had to be 100,000$ or more or else it’s not anything they mess with
MoltijsOnion@reddit
Reports Jameela Jamil
TexasBurgandy@reddit
So how specific does this information need to be, for science?
Known-Historian7277@reddit
That’s tough since it’s so circumstantial. You would have to have at least one definitive fact or lead on something specific enough to get the authorities attention.
GoldenMegaStaff@reddit
Are these multibillion dollar companies are not issuing 1099s?
