Is Lectric still a trustworthy brand?

An Ebike newbie here! I know Lectric is a well known ebike brand with reasonable prices. I actually test rode an XP4 at a local bike shop. It was comfortable and unexpectedly powerful.
However, recently I came across some Reddit posts people claiming that Lectric bikes had snapped in half while riding. This really concerns me about the quality. The frame of a bike should be sturdy and should never break.
Even though I really like the XP4 and there's a sale going on, I've started to hesitate about whether to buy it or not. Does anyone have any suggestions? Thank you!

Don’t buy Lectric. Battery died second year and they are asking me to pay for a new $300usd battery. Infuriating.
nillajenn@reddit
Mine literally stopped turning on. Battery good, wiring good - bike does not power on.
nillajenn@reddit
Im having an issue with mine and customer support is non existent

Lectric was only sold on Amazon or other drop shippers. Everyone said don't buy them because they were cheap drop shipped bikes. Now they sell them in bike shops and all the sudden they are great bikes. There are the same quality as most bikes you get in a bike shop.
All the bikes you buy in bike shops are made in Asia, even trek is made in Asia. There are some that say made in usa but they use the same parts that are from Asia but they are put together here. The only good thing about buying from a bike shop they normally give you support for 1 year.
cyndeelouwho@reddit
When was Lectric drop ship? They have headquarters in AZ where I live and you order directly through them or go to the showroom to buy? I'm feeling confused.
CaterpillarKey6288@reddit
The company only started in 2019, was only avalible on line from Amazon or other websites. About 2 years ago, they started to be available in a limited bike shop partnership. All the parts are made in china, including the frame
Nothing wrong with them, I enjoyed the one I had. Just trying to say that just because a bike is only avaliable on line doesn't mean it a piece of crap like a lot of people say because it's not sold in a bike shop.
cyndeelouwho@reddit
Gotcha. I guess I didn't realize they were an available-on-Amazon-only thing to begin with, but then I only started learning about ebikes a few months ago.
I unfortunately had an immediate issue with my Lectric ebike. A control box that overheats around 8 miles in, leading to cutting out of throttle and pedal assist. And the part won't ship for over a month, I need it for fall classes. Now it looks like I'll be übering for the first few weeks. And I'm not the only one. I'm very annoyed that they are selling them with a known issue and then offering the free fix. It's a bad business practice. But, Aside from that, I love the bike. The present others I had this issue asked for freebies and got them so I believe I'm going to do that as well, though I wish I could make them pay for Uber.
arthurbarnhouse@reddit
If the bike was one of the Lectric folding ones, those ones have more trouble than non-folding bikes. The hinges at the folding point can snap if you overly stress them. I remember when I was still in the US the guy who worked on my bike said that he preferred a heavy frame like mine to a folding frame because he had seen ones that he was doing maitenence on that had stress fractures at the hinges. I think that you're not supposed to use them on anything but flat roads and people will sometimes use them for offroad and stuff.
Motocampingtime@reddit
It's really luck of the draw and warranty support past the quality of the frame, unless you specifically go for a name brand or build your own the components are going to be pretty cheap. Although, most of the components on a bike are easy enough to swap. A user had the welds fail at the hinge due to poor weld penetration, and supposedly didn't get anything out of it since it happened after warranty.
I'd say probably still ok bikes for the money with some good anecdotal success. What do you hope to do with it? If you want to exercise, probably get something a bit more built like a regular bike.
YourFriendNoo@reddit
Also curious to see the space's thoughts on this brand, as someone looking for an entry point. I'm not crazy about the form factor, but if it's the best entry point, I'd consider it still.
HW_Luke@reddit (OP)
To me it is a well know American brand that has been in this business for years. So I tend to trust it. The components Lectric uses on this bike is okay considering its price. But even for an entry point, the safety should still be the priority.
dallascyclist@reddit
It’s a chinese brand. The AZ company is just a foreign LLC. https://ecorp.azcc.gov/BusinessSearch/BusinessInfo?entityNumber=23159926
DinoGarret@reddit
"Foreign LLC" means it was formed in a different state then where it operates, not a different country.
The LLC is legally located in Delaware, but they operate in Arizona, so it's a "Foreign LLC".
BigRock4389@reddit
Hahha, I love to read these posts.. these bikes all made in China.. But they are under strict quality control... that is all.. If these made in the USA, the price would be double, or more..
But, ok.. these made in U.S. can anybody show me a video about the factory? Location? A little puppy with wrench?
No... I knew it ;)
planeEnjoyer12@reddit
so are you saying american cars like Ford or Chevy are not american?!
BigRock4389@reddit
How is that relevant now? You're mixing apples and oranges.
planeEnjoyer12@reddit
Lectric is based in the US using chinese parts. Sounds familiar? thats because it is
dallascyclist@reddit
would they really meant to say it was “well known online shell company that will be jettisoned as soon as the liability suits pile up”
mikep120001@reddit
Considering they bought another well known brand that went bankrupt your post seems unlikely.
Oak_Redstart@reddit
Just because something is made in China does not mean that it’s from a Chinese company. American companies can also have things made in China. They are still American companies.
MoashIsAGoodGuy@reddit
Of your think being registered in Delaware makes a company legit, then your age severely ignorant on these matters and should not be publicly commenting.
What did I just read.
astroj84@reddit
The dude that owns lectric is indeed American and is originally from Delaware. Please read your comment and apply it to yourself.🫢
DinoGarret@reddit
What did I just read?
iH8MotherTeresa@reddit
Lol of course it's "from Delaware."
BodSmith54321@reddit
They have very good costumer service. If you don't want folding look at their Xpress or Xpeak.
anxietyriddledeeyore@reddit
Personally I would wait, or find another company to purchase from. The xp4 is a brand new model, customers have had TONS of issues. This has also led to their customer service being overwhelmed in the last month, or so, and their response time to emails, contact links ,and phone calls has greatly increased. They also just switched back to FedEx for their e-bike shipments, which is incredibly disappointing. Lectric itself was telling customers months ago how bad FedEx was, when they had switched to UPS, but now their back to FedEx…
Ive had a plethora or issues with my Xpedition 2.0, unfortunately, and that combined with the current situation above, makes it hard to recommend Lectric to anyone.
Current_Helicopter95@reddit
Idk if it’s just me but I’ve had 3 problems with my XP4 since I got it, battery would slide right out, the preload is stuck and won’t move, and the brake caliper and/or rotor is not aligned well and rubs against the brake.
Last email I sent was this past Monday and they haven’t gotten back to me yet. Seems like customer service is extremely slow, I just want to ride my bike :(
anxietyriddledeeyore@reddit
You might have better luck direct messaging them on their official Lectric facebook page. I know I did. Their response time has drastically increased with emails, contact links and phone calls in the last month or so. Apparently the newly released xp4 has had so many issues that their customer service has been extremely overwhelmed…
This combined, with the abundance of issues I’ve had with my Xpedition 2.0, and their switch back to FedEx shipping, it would be hard to recommend them, in my opinion.
Practical-Function-3@reddit
Brakes rubbing with huge thin rotors every e-bike and scooter I’ve had has done this and they stop on their own. I used to take them in for this service but it was so annoying I just learned to live with it. 2 yrs later and the brakes rubbing is almost non existent…hasn’t been an issue in about a year. I’ve had my spokes and wheel break but never a frame…
I also don’t ride them hard or fast over bumps I usually slam on my brakes which is cheaper than banging up my bikes everyday over potholes
Usually the more moving parts anything has the less steady it is and the easier it can break which lectric is a future type brand they don’t make simple bikes which is fine. If you want a lecture bike that won’t break maybe look at the mountain bikes they make…or the cargo segment…possibly…I have a cargo bike and it’s solid as the frame goes
Current_Helicopter95@reddit
I wouldn’t really care if it was just the noise, but it is slowing my bike significantly. Hills I used to ride up in tour I now need turbo to get up.
Practical-Function-3@reddit
Usually after sometime the brakes and rotors set themselves in without you having to do nothing but ride it.
I know it may sound really bad and sow you down but as you ride it more it will break in.
My bikes don’t even do that anymore.
My rotors still are in good condition…so like I did it messy sound bad but it’s really not that serious
showmethenoods@reddit
Same, my XP4 is already in the shop for a torque sensor replacement. Didn’t even last a week.
They do have good customer service so I don’t mind buying from the brand
SnortsSpice@reddit
A lot of businesses are slow the whole week due to July 4th. Tons take off before and after plus just take it easy.
Not saying it's an excuse, just wanted to provide insight. I hope they get to ya asap this week.
Current_Helicopter95@reddit
Yeah that’s what I’m hoping
BodSmith54321@reddit
I would try calling. People are used to bad phone service so they don't try. I've always had a good experience with them.
Current_Helicopter95@reddit
I’ll try calling them, thanks
armchairqb2020@reddit
All the DUI guys at the park love theirs. One had his dead computer replaced for free after three years, it did take over a month to get a new display.
MonzellRS@reddit
eBikes have weight limits for a reason.
FigNinja@reddit
Was the person who posted about the frame problem over the limit? I didn’t see the post. I thought it was the wheels that were usually the failure point when a bike is overloaded.
Ohm_Slaw_@reddit
I'm the same way. I'd like to know the specifics of the case(s). The hinge is always a weak point on a folder. If you were over the weight limit and liked to hop curbs or do "wicked jumps" it likely would fail at the hinge.
mikee8989@reddit
Are we talking about the one post where the guy had a 5 year old XP 2.0 snap in half?
SlippyCliff76@reddit
I was not over the weight limit. I'm only 155lbs. People need to stop making excuses for companies. Their customer service was great, but that was such a glaring failure. I don't think will ever consider another folding bike again.
mccicee@reddit
I recently purchased the XP4, and a couple of my friends did too after seeing mine. We all love our XP4s and haven't had any major issues besides having to tweak the brake pads so they don't rub the disc. Customer service has took a couple days to respond initially when I reached out over a faulty throttle/PAS issue, but they were responsive and attentive when they emailed me back and it was a super quick and easy fix.
micahbudd@reddit
I've had two the 3.0 and now the Xpedition 2.0. Over 2k miles on my 3.0 and almost 900 on the Xpedition now and while I've had a few issues, Lectric always offered a solution and I never had any catastrophic frame issues. Just my experience. I'd be willing to bet the frames you see snapped are mostly misuse situations but that's just a guess.
rockycore@reddit
Listen every brand is going to have lemons or issues sometimes.
I have an XP Lite 1.0 with 1300 miles over almost 3 years now. The front brake rotor was a little whobely but I had it trued up during a back flat replacement at a shop. Otherwise there was nothing wrong quality control wise.
Even the front rotor didn't rub I just noticed it and it bothered me.
But again sometimes people do get serious issues.
djphatjive@reddit
I have had a Lectric for years. Xp 2.0 I believe and I am pretty heavy. Still works awesome. I think the ones that snapped are people treating it like a dirt bike. Jumping and stuff.
Ssorath@reddit
I put more than 5k miles onto mine. It went thru hell and I’m excited to ride it everyday.
mellomike5@reddit
I've created my share of posts trying to get answers like that with my own brand if I knew I'd give you trustworthy advice it's just unfamiliar kind sir
alttabbins@reddit
Where did a Redditor break their frame in half? I’d love to see how that happened. I have the original XP and if you offered me a million dollars to break the frame in half somehow while riding it, I couldn’t do it. It’s a tank.
The company is great. They source their bikes from china but do enough quality control where it’s less of a problem than most other brands. They back their bikes too and have near Costco level customer service.
BodSmith54321@reddit
They have great costumer service and if you are lucky e enough to have a local dealer, I say go for it.
HW_Luke@reddit (OP)
So it's a big guy on a small folding bike doing big jump that caused that snap? That's Horrible
arenablanca@reddit
All folders, even much better ones like Tern, are meant for smooth surfaces (I’ve had 2 Dahons and a Tern analog folder).
There’s stupid adds on Amazon etc of people jumping off rocks in their el-cheapo ebike fat tire folders - complete brain dead advertising 🤷
That doesn’t mean any hinge can’t fail, it’ll always be a weak point so you have to use the bike appropriately. If you don’t need the bike to fold get a regular diamond frame.
DinoGarret@reddit
I wouldn't worry much about the frame issue. Aluminum can always snap under large stresses, which is why don't people prefer steel. We don't know how these bikes were used, but even if they weren't abused, the failure rate seems extremely low.
Stinkytheferret@reddit
I have three of those bikes and have zero issues. Not have I seen any. Hmm
Away-Revolution2816@reddit
One thing with a folding bike, I have four, is it's not a maintenance free unfold and forget it design. You have to occasionally check the latches and adjust on the folding parts. The other thing I've learned is all new models of anything usually have some issues. People with the issues are way more likely to voice them than those without. I have two Lectrics, zero issues and will buy a third. They've helped with problems that weren't their fault. My first ebike was from a well known brand and I was pretty disappointed with their customer service. Lectics an established brand, recently bought Juiced bikes so I still consider them a trustworthy brand.
Extension-Line-3322@reddit
I got the Lectric xp3 for my wife two years ago and she loves it. If I didn't have an ebike already I would get the xp4 100%
AggravatingAd8259@reddit
Just bought 2 and love them. Great price and good quality
