Starlink is Awesome. 16.5K, ~180kts and posting

I'm sitting here at 16.5K doing almost 180kts over the ground. My son is playing roadblocks and I'm posting on reddit. Wow!!!!
ExtremePast@reddit
starlink is wasteful nonsense. Disposable satellites that last a few years and are then burned up in the earth's atmosphere with zero regard to what the potential impact of that pollution will be. Not to mention the complete waste of resources to build hundreds of satellites to just burn them up a few years later.
Smartnership@reddit
Miniscule waste footprint.
We should compute your carbon footprint when flying.
Oh the horror.
carlyjb17@reddit
Mate we literally cannot see the space properly from the earth anymorw
Smartnership@reddit
We literally can and do
ergzay@reddit
It's a couple of tons of aluminum per year. If you're that concerned with pollution you shouldn't be flying in a plane in the first place. Ride trains. Also all satellites have lifetimes, its better that they burn up than are left in space as space junk. Many countries are considering putting in place limits on how long your satellite is allowed to last after its useful lifetime which would enforce into law exactly the kind of behavior that SpaceX already does.
carlyjb17@reddit
We care about how it is spent because spacex and starlink does get public financing which could be spent in more important things like not letting people literally starve to death or to not go to hospitals because they cannot afford it
Lazylion2@reddit
don't look up how combustion/jet engines works
BonanzA36@reddit (OP)
I’m sure all the people in third world countries that now have reliable high speed Internet feel the same. You’re going to love general aviation with that attitude. :)
SparkySpecter@reddit
I’m in the US and it’s the best internet available for my house. Though I’d ditch it in a second for something decent land-based. They just installed fiber a mile away, someday…
hoodranch@reddit
AT&T Fiber at my house is not fantastic and surprisingly unreliable. Starlink at my remote cabin is awesome and 3x faster.
Swimming_Way_7372@reddit
Wait until you find out peole are taking G650ERs and larger aircraft with 40k+ lbs of fuel for single passengers to cross continents and oceans all the while using starlink at $10,000/month for internet.
flybot66@reddit
Just got my mini in time for OSH. I don't know that solo I will have any use for internet while enroute. I am trying to think of an aviation use, but coming up short. I have a GDL69 so I get XM WX, XM radio. I get ADS-B in provided by a GTX345.
I guess the weather radar is higher resolution over the internet. That might be a help, but I don't have weather radar so I'm not going to go through a line of TRW...
Navydevildoc@reddit
Just know that starlink gets absolutely clobbered at OSH. Everyone has one now it seems, so every night the speeds just get insanely low as everyone goes back to their RV/Tent/Plane and starts watching netflix. Each year has been worse than the one before. The system isn't designed to have such high density of users in such a small place.
So just don't have any grand plans of using really high speed internet while you are there.
flybot66@reddit
Thanks for the heads up. Maybe I'll wait to activate it until I see the lay of the land out there. It's more for my wife en route. EAA does have WiFi. I remember it working in the homebuilt area but not in the N40.
Navydevildoc@reddit
Starlink is slightly better than the offered WiFi but they may have improved it this year. I was talking to some of the EAA folks about it last year and they hinted an upgrade was coming but they didn’t know when.
t0ny7@reddit
I used mine once to stream music while on a short XC that left cell range.
Other good use is for emergencies. If I lose my engine and have to land in the middle of nowhere I can make calls for someone to come help me.
FujitsuPolycom@reddit
A plb or better (inreach) or iPhone will do this also. Not to negate your use cases, just so others know.
Sudden-Yoghurt3501@reddit
I'll die on this hill as a SAR guy. Nothing beats a PLB. If it's a choice between your money going to any of the three you mentioned, make sure it's a GNSS equipped PLB first. Anything else is just worse at being found.
Now, if we're talking about practical everyday comms with the significant other? Sure, phone, starlink, inreach, HF, cup and string whatever. But there is just no comparison for the engineering behind a full blown COSPAS-SARSAT beacon. It's pretty much the cheapest of any of the options too.
t0ny7@reddit
Ya, those might be better in a lot of cases. But with Starlink I can make voice calls and stuff. After I am done camping this summer I might switch it to the $10/m plan as cheap backup.
I was thinking more about if my engine quits and I make a safe landing in the middle of nowhere I don't really need emergency rescue. But I could call friends with bush planes to come help me do emergency repairs or whatnot.
tspike@reddit
What's OSH?
NoSoup4Ewe@reddit
OSH = Oshkosh, WI home to one of the largest aviation gatherings in the world, AirVenture, which is coming up in a couple weeks.
tspike@reddit
Thanks
Status_Movie_6470@reddit
Everything.
Turbomeister@reddit
In daytime VFR I like the visual GOES satellite feed for watching cloud/fog/smoke development, estimating tops, etc. At night it's less useful, but the microphysics feed can be used similarly.
Also, if the FSS RCOs go away you can submit PIREPS online instead of through ATC.
Cool-Acanthaceae8968@reddit
GOES IR shows cloud tops at night because tops are a function of temperature.
Guy_Faux_@reddit
I cancelled my sxm because starlink is the same price per month.
BonanzA36@reddit (OP)
I have the 345, but the data I get online is so much better. Was just reviewing windy as I have weather I’ll have to deal with this afternoon. Plus you can dump Xm.

How's your situational awareness?
BonanzA36@reddit (OP)
Beautiful VFR day. If you've ever flown in the mid teens you'll know that there is virtual zero traffic except in the vicinity of a C or D with the big guys decesending or climbing through it.
established_inbound@reddit
As you cut clear across two very busy arrival corridors and the N90 north departure gates oblivious to the amount of movement atc has to do around you while you browse reddit because you have a misconception as to how busy the airspace around you is.
babyp6969@reddit
Yea this attitude gets GA pilots killed
Spanton4@reddit
Ya not sure why there's so many people mad on here. Do they also think airline pilots are sitting there doing their instrument scan constantly while in Cruise?
babyp6969@reddit
Uh the altitude should be bugged BECAUSE you’re not doing an instrument scan. Also, why OP keeps suggesting that he doesn’t need to bug his altitude because there’s no traffic, I do not know.
It’s just a professionalism thing. And a bad attitude to have.
Also, it’s required at the airlines so seeing an unbugged altitude is highly irritating.
established_inbound@reddit
No, but they are on IFR flight plans and are provided separation services.
Spanton4@reddit
And this guy above 12500 doesn't have seperation services in class B airspace? Even if he isn't under IFR it would be CVFR up there.
established_inbound@reddit
He's nowhere near the bravo, and CVFR isn't a thing in the US. He's also more than likely not talking to anybody, he's in class E.
Spanton4@reddit
Fair enough, in Canada its different. Most airpace above 12,500 here is class B
JizzCollector5000@reddit
They’re mad because it’s starlink and starlink belongs to Elon.

Why aren’t you looking outside for traffic?
BonanzA36@reddit (OP)
I’m assuming minus your numerous type ratings you’ve never spent much time in the mid teens. Besides, close to a b or c airspace with arrivals departures there is no one there…..
CommuterType@reddit
I’ve spent several thousand hours in the mid teens, nowhere near class B or C airspace. You have no idea how wrong you are.
poisonandtheremedy@reddit
I fly to a lot of remote and desolate desert strips so the idea of internet communication is nice (I do carry a Garmin PLB) , and better in-flight weather for xc’s is cool too. But I can’t help but be saddened to always read how Starkink is *necessary* for kids to be amused and use their iPad.
24/7 satellite internet in a personal plane so the kid can watch Pepe Pig.
Read a book, look out the window, be bored!
BonanzA36@reddit (OP)
My post and my kid. This is a friendly response.. I agree with you to a point. We flew ~ 9 hrs. Most of it in the mid teens. I’m bored never mind a mid teen. To provide prospective , he’s got an Apple Watch and an iPad that I have locked down. I also carry a garmin plb. But this is a different world. Try it.
Sock_Eating_Golden@reddit
While I generally agree and severely limit my kids' screen time. OP is flying about 10 hours today in a small plane with a child.
poisonandtheremedy@reddit
Sounds like childhood summer roadtrips in the back of the station wagon!
0O00OO0OO0O0O00O0O0O@reddit
Except kids are used to having access to the internet now. When we were kids, it was never a thing, so we didn't miss it the same way.
poisonandtheremedy@reddit
Eh, give the kids the internet 24/7, they are going to expect it 24/7. Sort of a self-fulfilling prophecy.
Red_Bengal_Cyclone@reddit
And if you don't they fall behind their peers in technology aptitude, which matters later in life for job skills in an increasingly digital driven society.
SouverainQC@reddit
You don't have to be always on something to be able to use it.
The-Almighty-Pizza@reddit
Just out of curious what do you do that require you to fly out to remote strips despite being in socal. Sounds interesting
poisonandtheremedy@reddit
Require? Nothing requires me. I fly for business sometimes, and for personal enjoyment the others. My wife and I live in the boonies, like being away from the hordes, and we like exploring. So going to remote airports and desolate strips is our jam.
Amboy, Ocotillo, Barstow, Kern, Cal City, Chiriaco, Jean, Jacumba, etc. Lot of old history at these runways, derelict aircraft, austere scenery, and all that jazz. Plus there is more of a challenge just getting to many of these places and shooting landings.
Granted yesterday we flew around Orange County at 1,000 AGL for the fireworks so... Exact opposite of the boonies!
Cheers.
The-Almighty-Pizza@reddit
Thanks for the response, yeah I'm in socal aswell and preparing to get my PPL some time next year. Sounds like such an awesome hobby. I've been all throughout the Mojave and always see these deserted strips but I never imagined actually just flying to them.
poisonandtheremedy@reddit
It is a wonderful hobby for sure. Last night my wife and I, during our fireworks flight, were just in awe of the privilege. Good luck with your PPL journey!
sliderrrrrr@reddit
Is it true that ForeFlight blocks internet access in flight? (Weather updates)
SouverainQC@reddit
No, It's not – otherwise, how would one get SiriusXM Wx to work ?
bernhardertl@reddit
Took me a moment to read it as 16500 feet altitude and bot 16,5kilo baud. That would make a bad example of an internet uplink.
DontLookUp21@reddit
Which Starlink plan did you use?
VisualApproach17C@reddit
I use a local priority 50GB plan. $65 a month. Works very well and doesn't seem to have any ground speed restrictions like some other plans.
adamupthere@reddit
What antenna is that with, can you get that with the mini ?
x4457@reddit
It does - it's 350 MPH. Global priority is 550 MPH.
VisualApproach17C@reddit
I do think that's loosely enforced. I have used it in a jet windshield going much faster than 350 no problem.
x4457@reddit
It’s not loosely enforced, it’s a literal speed switch on the plan. Mine clicks off as soon as I hit 479 knots.
FujitsuPolycom@reddit
Great.
PushPullInOut@reddit
What is best use for SL in the cockpit as far as Wx? Is there a consensus? Thanks
tehmightyengineer@reddit
Kind of off topic but Roblox is a really scummy company that has built their entire game on exploitation of children. Also, the "games" are generally complete trash that belong in the same family of shit brain rot entertainment for kids like Cocomelon.
MatomeUgaki90@reddit
Starlink has its own problems too
tehmightyengineer@reddit
Oh for sure but I think we're all aware of that. Plus that's more about one person, while as far as I know the company is fine.
RedditEvanEleven@reddit
I mean to be fair it’s just a platform for games. In the same way Steam or the PlayStation store has a bunch of trash games, but also a bunch of great ones.
Idk why I’m defending Roblox I just had some good formative memories playing on there many years ago
tehmightyengineer@reddit
Oh, they certainly used to be better and way more innocent. But just like Facebook and Twitter and whatnot they ended up being a very negative influence in the end. And that's the real problem is that Roblox cultured this for money rather than being on the whole a positive like steam.
iiiinthecomputer@reddit
Yep. There are some really good games hidden in the trash but I refuse to let my kids near it. Everything I've heard reinforces this.
confusedguy1212@reddit
Do you just sit the antenna on the seat next to you? How is it powered? Is there any like radiation danger or anything like that?
ergzay@reddit
It's a consumer electronics device which means there's strict power limits which makes it safe to be next to.
And even if it was high power, it wouldn't be "radiation danger", it'd be RF heating/high voltage danger.
I'm not sure which version he has but the earlier units could be modified through a bit of DIY to be powered by a DC power supply and later versions accept direct DC input.
He said in a different post that he just sets it on top of his instrument panel.
confusedguy1212@reddit
Thank you very much for this answer!
Pilot-Imperialis@reddit
Ah, that explains why you’re off center line then.
ElbowTight@reddit
So in the marine world we call it “cross track error” or “deviation from track line” and you have an allowable range (can be adjusted manually). I’m assuming the aviation industry has a similar term, do those track lines or flight paths have to be scrutinized by someone at the FAA or with an FAA certification before you can fly? Or is it assumed that you’re following policy and law based on your certification?
Sock_Eating_Golden@reddit
A couple things. Commenter was making a joke that the pilot is using Starlink and "right of center." But, you can see the magenta working in the left screen that says x track error. It's the same for aviation.
OP pilot is flying under VFR flight rules in a small single engine aircraft. While there are rules and best practices. He's, generally, allowed to fly any route he chooses. Similar to how you go in your vehicle and go driving. You have to follow rules. But you can choose whatever route you want.
ElbowTight@reddit
Awesome thanks for the reply, the satellite went right over my head lol. I figured it was roughly the same but not familiar with the industry.

I love all the hate - like you said, guys that spend 95% of their time 10 miles from airport.
I’m in the same boat - SR22 with 95% of my time on 300+mile trips. Cruise 8-12k altitude - no mans land. It’s Cirrus, Bonanzas, Mooneys and occasional twins there.
Love my starlink. I get long distance up to date high resolution weather (ForeFlight ADSB 300 miles away is extremely granular, Friday I was planning my route between Florida storms 2 hrs ahead of time in the air). I get ADSB traffic over Bahamas. I can call/text FBO (FBOLink plug). And most importantly- my family LOVES it. And makes the 3+hr flights more enjoyable - so they want to do more of them!
BonanzA36@reddit (OP)

These_Molasses_8044@reddit
TO BE FAIR, how many dorks do you see scrolling while driving around and not paying attention. Would hate to see that transition to aviation. But it is a pretty damn cool tool to have as well. And like op is doing, in flight entertainment as well. Pretty damn cool it works up there at altitude while moving that fast.
NuttPunch@reddit
Completely different situations. Driving you have threats in every direction as you are surrounded by other drivers. Flying? In a plane equipped like this with starlink and other expensive avionics. The pilot is at cruise on autopilot and can absolutely be heads down scrolling through data relevant to the flight. On an IFR flight plan, they are presumably flying in cruise at altitudes where terrain is not a factor and they may not even be able to see outside anyway.
established_inbound@reddit
OP is VFR in busy airspace with his head buried in a FaceTime call while flying a plane, and if I had to put money on It I'd say he isn't getting advisories being that he's so afraid of a cold TFR. As a controller, I can say for certain I've seen so many targets come very close in the mid teens because they aren't talking to anyone and probably not looking outside.
NuttPunch@reddit
16,500ft I wouldn’t call “busy VFR” airspace. Sure, VFR but it’s not like there is a bunch of GA hanging around there.
established_inbound@reddit
I never said busy VFR airspace, it's busy in general. He's crossing directly north of NYC. That's busy airspace with a lot of aircraft transiting those altitudes in climb/descent. I work that area, there's a lot of clueless VFR guys cutting through not realizing we are routing entire flows around them. There's plenty of VFR traffic in that area as well between flight training and transient. Sitting there with your head buried in your phone just so you can humble brag on reddit that you have Internet in your clapped out bonanza whilst having no clue as to what's occurring around you is a bad idea.

Are the winds at 16.5 that much better to put everyone on oxygen?
BonanzA36@reddit (OP)
I’m turbo normalized. The higher I go up to my critical altitude the faster I will go. So right now I’m truing 197kts. At 8k ft I’d be down around 180kts true airspeed give or take. Then as you mentioned you have to factor in the winds. Is the extra time in the climb and fuel worth it. For me, up to about a 25 kt head wind is worth it. Plus up here there is almost no traffic, it’s usually nice and smooth and the temps are nice and cool. I don’t have ac.
Sock_Eating_Golden@reddit

Plenty of discussion over on COPA about not using suction cups to mount things on the windows. This can cause damage and distortion.
There is one guy who designed a bracket to hold it just off the window, and it works perfectly. Plus, it can’t become a projectile in an incident.

Yes I have, phone is always in my flight bag, maybe the problem is I don't need my phone to be entertained. I guess it's a me problem.
BonanzA36@reddit (OP)
To each their own.

Ashamed-Charge5309@reddit
What are the utility doors exactly?
OCFlier@reddit
He’s flying a long body Bonanza with double doors in the rear.
Impossible-Bad-2291@reddit
Seems to have started in Hyannis, stopped for fuel in Dayton, OH, and is currently overhead Indianapolis, headed west.
Vapor175@reddit
On most bonanzas (including the A36 pictured) there is the door over the wing for pilot ingress/egress as well as a cargo door to the aft where passengers (if configured) or cargo can be loaded.
Fun fact, these doors can also be removed from their hinges for aerial photography
Ashamed-Charge5309@reddit
Interesting, removing the doors probably explains the warning on the dash about airspeed
ElectricCali44@reddit
Nice. My homie is a skydiver dropper and has been live streaming his drops using starlink
legitSTINKYPINKY@reddit
We’re getting starlink installed next month. Pumped

I don’t think Elon’s a Nazi.
I mean, he’s never at the meetings.
hondaridr58@reddit
That's awesome!
bigjuicey@reddit

Sock_Eating_Golden@reddit
Looks like he's gone a bit Southwest of CMH
ElPayador@reddit
Can you get cellular calls (WiFi calling) Thanks
BonanzA36@reddit (OP)
Just FaceTime the wife and did a WiFi call as well. Both worked perfect
WhiteoutDota@reddit
How did you get audio to the phone?
frisbee_wafflesnatch@reddit
Probably a Bluetooth headset.
GobbleDisCaulk@reddit
He’s just north of KPIT now
Sock_Eating_Golden@reddit
I'm thinking CMH area for a fuel stop?
GobbleDisCaulk@reddit
Just for fuel, nah the big airports got that premium pricing. He should go for a smaller one but he’s prolly good on fuel. But he be coming over CMH soon
Sock_Eating_Golden@reddit
Oh ya, that's why I said "area"
I later find DLZ on his waypoint. But he seems long and south. Sky vector reporting cheapest fuel in the area is I23, Fayette County

Fhajad@reddit
At a surface level he did change and to ignore that is a bit much. Three years ago he was very LGTBQ "friendly" publicly while now it's get anywhere near it's a poison word for him.

You really need to study history - you’ll find that most Democrats are far more closely aligned with National Socialism than Musk.

I wasnt actually. I thought it was weird he allows the Russians to use it after sending a bunch to Ukraine. Its almost as if he's a man without convictions or morals, much like yourself.

I didn't realize you can zoom out that far on the Garmin. You're showing like 600 miles there.
BonanzA36@reddit (OP)
I can zoom out so you can see the whole country but you lose all the detail.
FrankiePoops@reddit
Damn. Never even thought to try.
BonanzA36@reddit (OP)
It’s depressing on a long flight:)
Ok_Airline_9182@reddit
I've used it to live stream off a sensor ball in a 206. Totally game-changing piece of tech.
