They were the only way, but they weren't cheap. Columbus needed government funding to finance his fleet of tiny boats, like we would fund a moon mission today. Imports from other continents were super expensive to the point that the only things feasible to import were extremely compact - tea, spices. Or extremely expensive signals of wealth - beaver pelts, pineapples.
