I fear Section 28 or something similar will return, what do people think?

Have a break from the internet, it's a ludicrous notion.

There was a ruling effectively banning trans people from public toilets isn't a ludicrous notion, and there were are only a handful of MPs pushed back against it; if they can do that to trans people effortlessly, who's to say they'll then try this kind of thing against the rest of the LGBT+ community? So no, new law banning talking about queer isn't completely out of the

That’s completely not what the Supreme Court ruling was about though, toilets weren’t even mentioned in 200+ pages. The court ruled that it’s not against the Equality Act to define “sex” as “biological sex”. Trans people are not banned from anywhere, and remain a protected characteristic under the Equality Act.

I think their point is that - while the ruling went to pains to make clear that transgender people must still be protected from discrimination - the ruling does de facto bar them from public toilets. This is because 1. the ruling made clear that trans-women should not be allowed in women’s toilets (and that organisations could be taken to court for not providing a space for “biogolical” women), 2. many trans-women are not going to feel safe or comfortable using a men’s-toilet, 3. Very few spaces bother to provide unisex toilets. That combination leaves trans-women in a difficult spot, even if the ruling says “this isn’t about punishing them”.

By defining sex as biological sex, people afraid of breaking the law could be afraid of doing anything but define trans people by their chromosomes and ban trans girls and trans women from female toilets, and ban trans boys and trans men from male toilets

No there wasn't, you are misrepresenting the case.

SentientWickerBasket@reddit

It's not. There is pretty clearly [an ambition](https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c6257p2vry3o?app-referrer=deep-link) here, even if its effectiveness is currently quite limited. A sitting council member openly comparing trans people to alcohol, cigarettes, and gambling as a harm to children is a solid indicator of a desired direction.

A council has no power bar some local issues.

You should look up what Sec. 28 *was*.

We also banned teaching creationism. Because it's important kids aren't blinded by pseudo science presented as fact.

Are you saying books covering LGBT+ issues are pseudo science?

One council, and even then it's been over hyped.

My mum is a lesbian, she didn’t always know (hence how I exist) but her wife did, they have been concerned for a while that things will go the other way because of how “in your face” they perceive the LGBT+ pride movement to be. I personally don’t think it will become illegal again, that would cause so much backlash, but that doesn’t stop thugs getting the wrong idea and making people live in the shadows again.

Yep. The anti-trans bullshit is the new 1980s gay panic. Anything to keep us from focusing on the real enemy (the rich, obviously).

The news that Kent County Council are removing any "transgender-related" books from the children's sections of libraries is certainly incredibly concerning.

Ugolino@reddit

Remember that after Section 28 was abolished, KCC brought their own version in that lasted until 2010.  They've always been like this, but I'm worried that whereas before they were the last hold outs, this time they're ahead of the curve and a sign of things to come.

Unfortunately, things are heading that way in some areas. It's being used as an easy "win" for newly elected councils who need to distract from the flat fact that, no, they don't have the Fix Everything Button they claimed they did on Facebook.

Its been repealed.
View on Reddit #60728061

simmonator@reddit

So the worry/argument is presumably that: - Big Nige looks like he **could** be on course to form a government at the next election. - He’s also said recently that gay marriage is wrong (and other things that the hard core American Christian-Right he has links to like). - His party have already started removing educational books about trans issues from children’s libraries in places where they have control of the council, and are actively hostile to anything around LGBT pride. - If you put all that together, you can be quite worried about the state of LGBT rights in the future. Or put another way: what was repealed can be reinstated, and it seems like one of the contenders would choose to do that.

"Or something similar" Like for instance, banning books in case they turn children trans. Which was literally already done by one council.
