DRONE | The Loss of Autonomy

A cinematic exploration tracing the evolution of unrest — from the ashes of empire to the fractured frontlines of today. Some scenes may be emotionally difficult to watch. Viewer discretion is advised.
Set to “Drone” by Karnivool, this unofficial visual essay weaves real-world footage from Ukraine, the Middle East, and beyond, uncovering a quiet pattern beneath the chaos. Decades of cultural shifts, foreign influence, and rising tensions unfold. The use of soft / hard power on all sides to gain hearts and minds, then put them to work.

This is a non-commercial university project. No copyright infringement intended. Honestly started out as a doco about soft power in Ukraine and my favorite band dropped a song that I felt fit the profile during the edit, so I went to work.

Great video, you did well. Karnivool is a great band, the lyrical content in general definitely begs for an open mind. Very thought provoking indeed. It’s quite horrifying to see this world in collapse

Our loss of autonomy happened a long time ago...

It's crazy just how far back it goes. There's a quick shot of a concert from Moscow called Monsters Of Rock 1991 in here because my studies of soft power in Ukraine lead me back to the end of the Soviet Union and how America was quick to flood Russia and the surrounding area with its culture during and after the fall. The market and political influence was unmatched. Check out Monsters of Rock in Moscow from 1991. The history behind that gig and the reasons for it happening, and who funded it, and why are very fascinating. Especially when you consider just how heavy the US was filtering money into schools, youth projects and universities through USAID around that time, while filling up their curriculum. Not to mention the introduction of MTV, the the American film industry. One war ended and another started brewing straight away. The ripples from events like this carried all the way over into the Orange Revolution and beyond. It's crazy how the country got split into two over the course of three decades.

Interesting sub to learn about a new Karivool song. For a moment I thought this might be r/progmetal

I also tried to share it with Tool fans on reddit and that was a big mistake.
