Through the first half of the year in the US, BMW has obliterated Audi in sales, selling more than double the cars.

Through the first half of the year, Audi sold 81,951 units in the US, on the other hand, BMW reported 178,499 units(excluding Mini)
Meaning that in the US, for about every 1 Audi sold, there are 2.2 BMW's sold.

Audi has completely lost their way. Their interiors and styling, the things they were best at, are mediocre. Some of VW's worst decisions, like the haptic buttons, have infected them. Their EV lineup is second-rate, and they have completely gotten out of the business of making sports cars - the R8, TT, and S5/RS5 coupes are all gone. The RS3 is probably the only Audi I would consider.
RespectCommon7019@reddit
Not surprised at all. Audi’s lineup has felt stale for years, same designs, boring interiors, and nothing exciting outside of the RS models. BMW at least keeps things fresh (even if controversial), and their driving dynamics still pull people in. Audi really needs to step it up.
Jlx_27@reddit
This isnt surprsing, every BMW performs better than any Audi.
HellaSaucy@reddit
To me this is unsurprising… Audi designs are very boring inside and out. Even the infotainment is wack. That paired with the reliability issues I wouldn’t even bother considering one at this point.
BMW has come a long way even with their own questionable designs. Their lineup literally has something for everyone
woodsides@reddit
Also hasn't BMW been outselling Audi for a while now? Why is this news?
_ThugzZ_Bunny_@reddit
Not by double. It's usually like 5-10% more
Dazzling-Rooster2103@reddit (OP)
As much as people hate on BMW's infotainment systems on here, people seem to love it in the real world, it is super well put together, the software is fantastic, and it looks futuristic compared to most other versions.
stav_and_nick@reddit
It's because BMW tech actually works; if you set an AC temp to automatically go to, it'll do it for you!
So many car companies have auto ac which is just useless
GermanCommentGamer@reddit
iDrive 9 is the only infotainment that ever fully crashed on me out on the road with all screens going black. iDrive 8.5 is good, but 9 is a buggy mess.
ubercruise@reddit
9 is a downgrade from 8.5, not an evolution of it
Clover-kun@reddit
Unsurprisingly iDrive 9 is just a skinned version of Android Automotive, while iDrive 8.5 is a custom made system by BMW based on Linux. They're light years apart
Oh_ffs_seriously@reddit
My Civic has done that once, and it was the second time my car started working properly once I turned it off and turned it on again.
le_b0mb@reddit
Given my experiences with iD4 Evo up to iD8.5 I’d give them some grace for bugs. Anecdotal I know, but they look to know what they’re doing.
HillarysFloppyChode@reddit
My only beef with BMWs auto climate is its lackluster approach to the fan control.
On my A8 if I turn it up or down or open the sunroof, it adjusts the fan accordingly. On my BMW it likes to just keep it at whatever setting I choose and barely adjusts it unless I use Max AC or turn on the auto wipers.
ChaosBerserker666@reddit
On the newer BMWs the fan speed cap is set in the auto climate control. Mine will adjust up or down as needed, up to the cap I set. They also added a very low option for capping the fan speed which is nice. I use that one I’m the spring and fall. It’ll blow colder/warmer air at a lower fan speed to compensate if needed to arrive at your desired temp.
HillarysFloppyChode@reddit
I think that’s what mine does, I don’t like it.
lael8u@reddit
I never been into a modern car where the auto climate control don't work, must be a user issue...
GodsFavoriteDegen@reddit
They probably aren't setting the temperature to LO, which as we all know changes thermodynamics and makes the car cool down faster.
Level-Plastic3945@reddit
Its not so good to have all of your digital/software/electronic stuff built into the car, as it is not the forte of many car manufacturers and decreases flexibility ... it is much better to have an external unit that is continuously upgradeable (nav, sound, content, phone, etc) ... when everybody went to the big built-in touchscreens around 2015 (BMW started this stuff in the late 90s and it was miserable) your intuition was correct. It was much better to do an aftermarket head-unit with a large smart phone, or even iPad and keep all the mechanical controls.
Fiveby21@reddit
I’m just glad that they’ve kept the rotary dial around. It is SO MUCH EASIER TO USE than a touchscreen.
lurpeli@reddit
Yup BMW's system is the best of any system I've had in terms of just working.
seamonkey420@reddit
have a 2020 mini and love it's infotainment system. prefer it over carplay anyday! yes its a mini skinned version but very solid. i had a 2013 mini and its system back then was light years better than most car makers.
mustangfan12@reddit
Yeah overall iDrive 8 works well, my main criticism with it is, they should make it easier to adjust brightness and not hide the recirculate button for HVAC in another menu. I personally don't like it, but it's more because a large screen causes eyestrain for me. So I can't drive most 2020s cars
Prize-Meat7508@reddit
Completely agree about the designs. I owned a 2014 A7 for 9 years and to my eyes, the re-design they did on the A7 a few years later (don’t recall exactly when) was a real shame. They basically did away with the prominent, straight shoulder line and put generic looking curves in its place. It just made it look boring and pretty ordinary. I feel the same about most of their entire current lineup. Nothing distinctive or exciting.
I didn’t think the Audi MMI (2014) was bad, but not great either. I really like the infotainment in my 2023 BMW X5 but I think I have the last iteration that still had buttons for climate control and shortcuts. I might feel differently about the screen-only implementation in more recent models.
Reliability-wise, I had no issues with the A7 though TBF I live close to work so, not a ton of miles. I can’t comment on their recent reliability.
Moessus@reddit
Is BMW much better than Audi though?
dsonger20@reddit
People have gotten 300K miles out of 4-7 years old B58s and B48s.
Audis will be only reliable for the first 70-100k. Great if you’re on a lease, sucky otherwise. This coming from a VAG loyalist.
UnnamedStaplesDrone@reddit
The BMW engines seem strong and hardy like bull. I’d still be worried about all the other stuff but damn if those twin turbo i6s aren’t some of the best available today
HillarysFloppyChode@reddit
B58 is a single twin scroll turbo (I know BMWs “twin power” marketing is misleading)
UnnamedStaplesDrone@reddit
ah no shit? good to know ty.
danemepoznaqt@reddit
People have reliably been getting 300k miles out of M57 and N57 too.
Dachshand@reddit
Bullshit and untrue.
lael8u@reddit
Any car will last 300k mi where you are doing +45k mi per year, Audi included.
And they are tons of supercharged V6 and Gen 3 2.0T way past 150-200k mi without any issues.
EverLovinHand@reddit
It’s really not. I just got back from Audi training and we drove the new Q5’s back to back with the new X3’s the the only thing the X3 did better was slightly more acceleration. They handle worse, they have giant tires in the back and the ride is less smooth, the suspension is worse so you feel bumps way more. And the interior feels much cheaper in the X3
ChaosBerserker666@reddit
You aren’t wrong about the X3 interior. I don’t have any comment on the other points, but they dropped the ball on the new X3 overall. The new sedans are much better.
somedudehere123@reddit
Yes, no question, having owned multiple recent model years
madwolfa@reddit
Yes.
Tapprunner@reddit
I just returned an A5 S-line that I rented for 3 weeks.
It was terrible. I can't believe someone would pay $60k+ for that.
The leather seats looked and felt cheap. The rear seats were weirdly deep and really uncomfortable. The cup holder was positioned under the dash so that it couldn't hold anything larger than a small drink. The center console was basically a little tray. Those all seem like little things, but they pointed to a real problem: Audi basically didn't get anything right. I can't think of a single aspect of that car where I think "yeah, they did a really nice job with that."
The whole car looked and felt like it should start at $25k. On pure aesthetics, there's something about the body that makes the panels look flimsy (especially around the wheels) and like they might peel off in the wind.
The drive was... acceptable. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't any better than the Camry I rented for a weekend last year.
I really don't get why anyone would buy one. There are dozens of better options that also cost less.
6786_007@reddit
I agree with a lot of what you said but I still like my a5.
However its my first and last Audi. I'll be getting a BMW next.
Sid-Skywalker@reddit
Yours is an older a5 which was much better than the new crap Audi is putting out
6786_007@reddit
Yeah the b10 generation are definitely a miss. A lot of people in the Audi forums and subs are pretty done with Audi.
My biggest gripe is now its all Quattro Ultra which is fromt wheel drive bias. Why pay a premium for that? My A5 is the last one before they switched.
ChaosBerserker666@reddit
At that point might as well get a Hyundai over current Audi. The interior might be nicer even. Genesis definitely are. That’s the problem Audi is going to face. They can’t keep up with BMW from ahead, and Genesis from behind. They’ve been lucky since MB has dropped the ball lately but I think MB is figuring out their shit and will be back on track soon.
6786_007@reddit
The reason I got my A5 was the drivetrain, handling, and I really liked the liftback design. Its a good looking car imo.
But that's where it basically ends. Interior storage is a joke, if you get the base model it's actually worse equipped than a Corolla, and it still baffles me certain luxury features are locked behind the highest trim which almost no one gets.
Anyway. I do love driving it but I'll be getting a BMW next for sure or something else.
ChaosBerserker666@reddit
I really feel you on the liftback thing. I was ambivalent at first but came to love my liftback!
6786_007@reddit
More cars should be liftbacks and I think people wouldn't buy as many stupid small CUVs.
Dachshand@reddit
It wasn’t.
Dachshand@reddit
It’s not the design, they’re far more pleasant to look at than most BMWs. It’s just that Audi is currently replacing half of its portfolio.
DeviousMelons@reddit
Bmw also doesn't have a total piano black fetish like Audi.
walmarttshirt@reddit
I’ve always loved Audi and appreciate that they were more subdued. Some people prefer that.
For me it’s the reliability issues from VAG vehicles over the last 5 years that means my next car will be a BMW vs an Audi.
k_dubious@reddit
I wonder how much of this is from Audi not selling a three-row SUV.
ubercruise@reddit
They sell a 3 row, just not a full-size Escalade style car. But neither do the other German brands.
ubercruise@reddit
I used to be something of and Audi loyalist, I ended up trading in my 2020 for a BMW because it just seemed better for the segment I was looking in. Didn’t switch cause I felt Audi in general was bad - but now I don’t think I could be pulled back into the brand, which is a shame.
TheReaperSovereign@reddit
BMWs makes excellent cars for people who actually buy cars
Available_Win5204@reddit
70% of BMWs are leased.
ChaosBerserker666@reddit
Thankfully I’m in the 30% that isn’t. Paid mine off last year and keeping it for a long time.
Available_Win5204@reddit
Wow you bought your BMW EV? That's wild because those are typically even more leased than their ICE cars. I think it's like 90% lol. So you're actually in the 10% not 30 haha.
ChaosBerserker666@reddit
I sure did. Special ordered it too with everything including the full merino leather (which comes with solid metal switchgear and an actual leather dash).
At the time I bought it in Jan 2023, the lease deals in Canada were HORRIBLE. A 4 year lease was like $300 a month less than to buy it in the same time frame. The interest rates were really high too, like 7% for purchase and almost 9% for lease. That’s why I paid it off ASAP. I owe nothing on it now. Depreciation is really bad but I intend to keep it. I love the car and don’t drive that far.
mishap1@reddit
That new X3 looks pretty terrible unfortunately.
stonklord420@reddit
It does but apparently it still drives the best in class (after the Macan) which is the point of a BMW imo
Fantastic_Spend4563@reddit
Macan hasn't been updated since 2014. It's just some facelifts and tweaks.
stonklord420@reddit
The Porsche way. It's still the best.
Fantastic_Spend4563@reddit
Nothing about Macan is the best. It's ugly, overpriced and outdated.
JimmyGodoppolo@reddit
I mean, it has the best engine and handling? This is r/cars after all
stonklord420@reddit
Ugly is subjective (I disagree), overpriced is correct (again, the Porsche way), outdated is a stretch though. The new tech looks great. Also, again, it still handles the best. And it has fantastic engine options. I challenge you to tell me a competitor that's better. Maybe the previous gen X3M? But those don't do luxury nearly as well.
Sid-Skywalker@reddit
Looking at how the cars today are evolving, I take that as a good thing
Fantastic_Spend4563@reddit
It's not when you're charging more than direct competitors for an inferior, outdated product.
stonklord420@reddit
It does but apparently it still drives the best in class (after the Macan) which is the point of a BMW imo
Dachshand@reddit
No, new Q5 has it beat even in terms of driving dynamics.
KyledKat@reddit
And it'll still probably post 15% gains YoY.

This can't possibly be true! r/BMW tells us every day that BMW has absolutely ruined themselves with their new designs...and as everyone knows, online enthusiasts groups are the target demographic!
Snarky attitude aside, I'm not a huge fan of the direction of BMW design lately either but 1: I don't think it's as bad as online groups go on and on about and 2: I know people like me don't make up a large enough demographic to drive the direction of an entire company.

I started watching BMWs in the early 80s, after riding in a friend's 2002, then obsessing over the early E30 M3s, M5s, 6's, and in the 90s going to watch M3s at Petit Lemans - in the late 90s I finally had enough money to buy a used E36 M3 and then moved up to an E39 540i (with lots of Dinan stuff) both purchased for under $30k, thinking it would be like a big high performance 4 dr sedan - however over the 10 years that I had it, it suffered a HUGE number of reliability problems (I kept pumping money into it though) - I was a BMWCCA member and Roundel reader and obsessor, however what happened to the company in the late 90 w.r.t. styling and marketing and expanding from 4-5 models to what? 12-15 models, where everyone is driving an M model now (even SUVs), which has taken the meaning and authenticness out of everything, and I'm sure that most BMW drivers have no idea what they are driving - they are basically rich Toyota/Honda people seeking status, I just wonder what their repair/failure experiences are like - anyway, I bought a Subaru STI in 2014 and I am much much happier than I was with the BMWs- and I know several people with X4s (M Competition) and X6s and they are all having problems - also these great big grills look terrible.

I'm not vehemently opposed to the curved screen dash, but Audi's implementation just does not look good at all. Also the passenger screen thing is possibly the cringiest option I've ever seen, and the fact that if you don't option it theres this ugly piano black fake screen instead of your actual dashboard is ridiculous.
theoreticaljerk@reddit
I mean, what do you think they say in the BMW groups? Same thing about BMW. Humans, generally, resist change.

Carrera_996@reddit
The interior of older Audi certainly leaves much to be desired. My wife's 2023 Q5 is just gorgeous and classy. The wood trim is real wood and all matching grain. My old Q7 interior looks like it was inspired by Hasbro.
Waterprop@reddit
What I was referring to is basically what this video is saying:
Cheap feeling piano black plastic everywhere
Awful "buttons" on steering wheel and on doors
Lack of buttons, EVERYTHING on touch screen under menus
Audi is supposed to be premium brand. These interiors are not that.
Pseudonym_741@reddit
I like how one of the comments shown in the video likened the new Audi steering wheel to Citroën as some kind of an insult.
Citroën has never used haptic touch sliders in their steering wheels, meaning their wheel is at least a million times more usable than Audi's.

Eclipsetube@reddit
Not that hard tbh. Audi is in a very tough spot even here in Germany.
The only reason someone would get an Audi over a BMW or Mercedes is because it’s the cheapest of the 3 when it comes to leasing.
Like I was looking for a smaller car like the A-Class 1er and A3. A-Classes were a ridiculous 350€ minimum, 1er were around 280-310€ and the A3 was around 230-250 AND it hat 5000km more in the contract. If I wanted the same contract for all 3 of them it would make the A-Class 60% and the 1er 40% more expensive.

comeonyouspurs10@reddit
I've owned 5 cars in my life. 4 of them were VWs. I've been planning to buy an Audi for 15 years basically. I'm about as brand loyal as you can get. The only reason why one of my cars wasn't a VW is because I was waiting for the new generation GLI that I have now to release since the MK5 was a downgrade from my MK7 GTI.
I'm going to buy a M340i probably. I can't even justify buying an Audi as a loyalist. It's just that bad now.
Vhozite@reddit
What’s so bad about them? Are they noticeably worse than the past or are modern BMW’s just better?
Dazzling-Rooster2103@reddit (OP)
The M340i is just really really good...
The new S5 still doesnt compete in terms of power, reliability, it is heavier, and pretty much the same price.
comeonyouspurs10@reddit
The BMWs are just better. There’s really no value left in car sales, new or used. You really need to maximize your dollar when buying cars this expensive. You can split hairs over interior, styling etc, but Audi is missing features like remote start and the BMW B58 is best in class engine and it’s not even close. Audi have just not kept up with the competition and there’s not even a value proposition because their product is the same price as the rest. If you objectively want the best sports luxury sedan in the class, it’s the 3 and 4 gran coupe and it’s not even close.

EngagedGroomsPodcast@reddit
Outside of Porsche and maybe Lambo, VWAG is a bit of a disaster right now. Stale product, investments in things that aren’t really panning out, and a bit of confusion in the future. To add to that, it seems like Audi interiors are now at the back of the class which was unheard of 10 years ago and it’s not surprising.
strongmanass@reddit
I'd include Porsche in that too. They don't have a dedicated CEO and no matter how good Blume is he can't lead both the brand and the group effectively. And they need a full-time CEO because of their strategy missteps. First they were committed to EVs, 911 was going to be the only ICE model. Then Chinese buyers said "we have our own EVs thanks," legacy buyers said "we don't want your EVs either," and now Porsche have to scramble to extend already old ICE platforms. They had to make a herculean effort to essentially keep the GT3 standing still (that's an exaggeration but not by that much). And the market has noticed all this because share price and sales are both down vs last year.
MrNoodleIncident@reddit
I bought my Audi new in 2020 because I liked it better than the competing BMW (that and the BMW was $10k+ more). Preferred the interior (the seats in particular are great), felt the S distinguish itself from the A more than the m340 did from the 330, power was admittedly a little less but didn’t make a difference for daily driving, etc. They are both really good cars and I don’t think I could have made a bad decision, but I’m still really happy and smile every time I get in the car 5 years later.
If I were buying again today I’m not sure I would make the same decision. I don’t love where the exterior styling has gone (specially the wheels) and I’m liking the interior on the bmw more. That plus the slight performance difference would probably be enough to sway me. I’ll still keep the car for another 5 years or so and it will be interesting to see what what options are then.
fullofdust@reddit
Agreed completely. My last car was an A6 3.0T and I loved it. My wife recently got a ‘22 Q5 and it’s a great car. Physical buttons, real wood on the dash, comfortable, quiet, good looking, etc. But I really don’t like the new direction they’re going. The exteriors look strange, and the interiors feel cheap. I’ve always preferred them to BMW but I can’t deny that BMW is just flat out building better cars these days (even though I don’t like their exterior styling direction either).
Fantastic_Spend4563@reddit
Audi is brand that has lost the plot. Years of endless, boring facelifts. The entire fleet looks the same in different shapes with LED strips, tripple screens everywhere and full of cheap plastic. BMW is the most leased brand, I believe in the entire industry? Once again the hive mind of reddit jumping through hoops to try and justify why they move more cars without doing some simple research and common sense.
The brand name "BMW" has prestige. Their leases are incredibly competitive, and they have no problem cutting margins razor thin or even going negative to move units. It's that simple. people don't want to admit it but while at the top end, ie the M cars, are facing stiff competition from other brands and probably not the best, the normal regular cars are IMO more than competitive and probably lean towards to the top, if you were to rank them compared to the regular cars of the other brands

When exactly did Audi outsell BMW? This is no surprise.

Audis have been so mehhh since like 2016, and I have 2 audis. My next car will be an M340i. This doesn't surprise me at all

Audi lineup looks exactly the same for the last 10 years. It’s outdated and boring.
Bigbadbrindledog@reddit
That's not that far removed from a normal years is it? I think BMW usually sells nearly double Audi I believe. BMW and Mercedes are usually neck and neck.
UniqueThanks@reddit
Is this even surprising? They’re going through a period where a bunch of models are being replaced. It takes time to ramp up

Audi recently refreshed a huge portion of its lineup, so I’m not that surprised. It’s likely that the disparity will be smaller in the second half of the year.
