Mayor Declares Dallas a “Sanctuary City from Socialism.”

From Dallas Mayor Eric Johnson on X: *If your city is (or is about to be) a sanctuary for criminals, mayhem, job-killing regulations, and failed socialist experiments, I have a modest invitation for you: MOVE TO DALLAS.
You can call us the nation’s first official “Sanctuary City from Socialism.” We value free enterprise, law and order, and our first responders. Common sense and the American Dream still reside here. We have all your big-city comforts and conveniences without the suffocating vice grip of government bureaucrats.*
Seems like he’s taking his recent party switch seriously.
remembertapes@reddit
There has never been a more pathetic kiss ass in the Republican party and that's really saying something.
Apprehensive-Cod-54@reddit
Dallas even has its own stock exchange now (the TXSE), and behind NYC and DC, it’s the 3rd most moved-to city for college-educated 25 year olds (source: Axios).
The mayor is responsible for making a city profitable, safe and sustainable. Conversely the mayor of my city of birth, NYC, Bill de Blasio, ran it into the ground by BEING a sanctuary for mayhem.
Nothing wrong with a little PR/showmanship. Bravo, Eric.
Wutalesyou@reddit
Safe? It’s one of the highest in the country!!!
Apprehensive-Cod-54@reddit
I said a mayor, meaning in general, is tasked with keeping a city, safe and prosperous, in general. I wasn’t speaking necessarily of Dallas or New York in that sentence.
lotrmemescallsforaid@reddit
Ted Cruz would like a word.
BrainPharts@reddit
Is that word vacation?
FineAd2187@reddit
But hey, this guy was elected as a DEMOCRAT and then changed parties. Read Jim Schutze's The Accommodation for deeper understanding. The mayor of Dallas is a clown
YaGetSkeeted0n@reddit
It really does come across as so craven. Like, dude, pick whatever party you want to be part of I guess, but it sounds so "pick me" as the kids call it.
To say nothing about how the dear leader of his chosen political party, and his most loyal fedayeen, absolutely hate free enterprise, law and order, and first responders.
MusicalAutist@reddit
"Pick Me Politician" should really be a new term we use. I like that!

He was the hand picked mayoral candidate of the oil billionaire Hunt family. He pretended to be liberal to win the election.
You don't under any circumstances have to hand it to him.
Furrealyo@reddit (OP)
He was elected to the Texas House five times as a Democrat.
That’s a lot of pretending.
remembertapes@reddit
Obviously things had changed for him before the mayoral race. Especially because he was recruited to beat the more liberal leaning candidate Griggs.
DepthsOfPleiades@reddit
We coulda had Scott Griggs, damn.
straigh@reddit
I've been out of Texas for years now and I still get sad when I think about that. I went to a debate between the two of them during their campaign and couldn't have been more put off by how smarmy Johnson was. I figured he was a turd, but this is a new and unexpected low even for him. Ugh.
bemvee@reddit
Wow, Johnson actually showed up for that debate? He skipped a lot of them, one time claiming it was because had an important vote in Austin that the roll call showed him absent for.

That’s called being sellout, just like what Ted Cruz did

So is he saying that there will be no fire department, police department, libraries, water supplies, street department, no one to regulate cell phone towers, no Parks, no public schools, public utilities, no nonprofit hospitals, no federal highways, social services, mass transit, sports stadiums funding, etc.?
j_squares@reddit
“Common sense and the American Dream still reside here.”
Has this delusional groundhog come out of his millionaire hole to see how people actually function around here?
Common sense is no longer common. A notion I learned while living in this city.
Just yesterday, I witnessed a pregnant lady tasked with bringing a pitbull to a vet to get it neutered. The dog was wild but sweet, and kept pulling her, to which, she just let go of the dog and let it run around the lobby.
Common sense is fucking dead and Texans are part of the culprits!

We are born ignorant as children, how did you not grow out of yours?
SueSudio@reddit
So what is socialism in your opinion?
TakeATrainOrBusFFS@reddit
I mean to be fair, socialism refers more to a comprehensive economic system with collective ownership of the means of production, but watching someone get that deeply offended at my dumb comment is just a great way to start my day.
Anyway, tell that little welfare queen to stay off my streets unless he’s paying every time he uses them.
Brookenium@reddit
Yeah, the thing is what's described above are examples of the policies that make republicans cry "socialism" so colloquially it's right. Someone is called "socialist" by the right when the support publically funded services.
But neither groups are right. There's no "socialist cities" in the US nor any pushing to be. The things Mamdani is proposing (which this is obviously referencing) are not socialist policies. But they ARE in the same bracket as city provided services.
TakeATrainOrBusFFS@reddit
Exactly.
TchoupedNScrewed@reddit
Also it isn’t a binary of one day? Capitalist. Next month? Abolished capital, you own the means of production with your workers, etc. - transitional states. I’m not saying we are one, we aren’t even capable (right now at least), but social safety nets and a better equal distribution of wealth is objectively heading in that direction.
All semantics at this point though.

I was in high school with him. He knows. He's not an idiot. He's just decided that appealing to idiots is his only path to higher office in this idiot-supermajority state.
JKinney79@reddit
It’s even worse, he’s an educated guy who likely knows better….but knows the buzzwords to use to sell himself to conservative voters.
Adventurous-Horse305@reddit
This. He knows how much socialism helps literally every city. What he said amounts to, we have no roads, cops, firemen, schools or parks since all that’s socially funded.
Academic-Visual-1030@reddit
Lol social programs aren't socialism...
YisITalwaysFASCISM@reddit
Right.. please explain.
Brookenium@reddit
Seriously, people need to quit pretending Republican politicians are stupid.
They're not stupid, they're greedy and generally evil people. They purposefully misrepresent and spin this shit for their own personal gain. Thinking their incompetent is what leads to us being where we are now. Quit thinking of them as the bumbling oafs that elect them and start thinking of them as the manipulating villains they are.
MateoCafe@reddit
You can't convince me that MTG and Boebert are smart. That being said there definitely are plenty of well educated Rs that are craven political grifters that will do anything to further there careers and bank accounts.
Brookenium@reddit
They're not necessarily smart and I'd argue rarely are. But they're not stupid. MTG and Boebert act the way they do because it garners them face time on the news and that's keeping them in their seats. Not that a Democrat can contest either, but they could be primaried. Their districts are so deep red that their constituents (who generally /are/ stupid) eat that shit up and they know it.
noncongruent@reddit
I'd argue there's a difference between being intellectually smart and being a smart feral. Bobes and Butch Built fall into the latter category, as does Trump.
31770j@reddit
They bowl politics with rails.
Csharp27@reddit
Exactly, a lot of the time they aren’t stupid (with many exceptions), but their constituents are and they know it, so they pander to the lowest common denominator and it usually pays off well for them.
Dontlikefootball@reddit
I think you mean uneducated voters
Academic-Visual-1030@reddit

ilikeengnrng@reddit
Mamdani has literally only won the primary, he's just pandering and using as many buzzwords as his little brain can muster. As a current resident of Dallas, the "American dream" is not "alive and well" here.
hbk1966@reddit
The worst part is Mamdani isn't even a Socialist 😭
Academic-Visual-1030@reddit
Mamdani is a socialist. He literally wants to setup government grocery stores aka bread lines and have them seize privately owned housing properties to setup communes.
hbk1966@reddit
By his own words he's a democratic socialist not a socialist. Those aren't the same things Socialism isn't when the state does stuff. That'd be like calling the US socialist because USPS or AMTRAK is owned by the state.
The US also already has federally owned grocery stores, lookup what a DeCA commissary is. Are we going to start calling the US military Socialist now? No, because these are owned by the bourgeoisie state and not by a worker's state.
Show me where he said he wants to seize privately owned housing. I think I remember seeing him wanting the option for the city or the tenants to have the first chance to buy apartment buildings when they go up for sale, but I can't remember where. The problem here this it's completely detached from the material conditions of tenants. Tenants are barely scraping by with outrageous rents, they're aren't going to be able to afford to collectively purchase an apartment building.
He has said his goal is to rebuild the democratic party. He is no more a Socialist than Bernie Sanders or AOC. Funnelling people back into the Democratic party isn't the path to Socialism, the Democratic party is the graveyard of social movements. This has always has been the case going all the way back to the Populist Movement/People's Party in the 1890s and happens time and time again. Many people left over after the Socialist Party split were mesmerized by FDR and were funneled into the democratic party. SDS, Occupy Wall Street, Bernie, BLM, and now DSA is starting to show the same trends. Moving into the Democratic party is a guaranteed death sentence for any movement.
Mamdani is attempting to do the same thing, and I don't think it's out of malice, but out of ignorance of history and how the system works.
CZall23@reddit
If socialism fails every time, why would he need to declare Dallas a sanctuary city?
ilikeengnrng@reddit
Right? And crazy how he's encouraging transplants instead of doing anything to help the disadvantaged citizens that already live here.
spacedman_spiff@reddit
This is a common misconception. The founding fathers rebelled against Britain to avoid paying taxes on their commerce. From their own writings, they made it clear they fully intended to only allow land owning men the right of suffrage. Obviously, Christianity was entwined in all facets of life. That was the original American Dream.
The modern Republican Party is aligning with those original goals.
musingmarkhor@reddit
Americans don’t know what socialism is or we know and apparently we just make up things just to spread hate and vitriol. Dallas needs someone to defeat the establishment Democrats, and bring new energy to defeat Republicans like Eric Johnson.
boldjoy0050@reddit
This is the type of thing that Europeans love to make fun of. Americans will call someone a socialist communist and think they know what they are talking about. Our educational system is a total failure because of how many morons we have.
isthereanyotherway@reddit
This is such an accurate statement it brought a wee tear to my eye. Most Americans barely understand capitalism, there's no hope for most Americans to ever understand socialism. We're such idiotic twats here, it's absurd.

Eric Johnson is a pathetic excuse for a mayor whose term in office cannot end quickly enough.

Of all people to be nonpartisan, you’d think a mayor would be at the top of the list.
Furrealyo@reddit (OP)
The skeptic in me says that’s exactly what he did by switching parties.
The role is largely ceremonial anyway, so why not switch to the winning side where the all opportunities are?
currently_distracted@reddit
So this is why politics shouldn’t be your fucking career and how you feed your goddamn family.
Furrealyo@reddit (OP)
Amen.
Same_Presentation692@reddit
Your political analysis is weak here. If by “opportunities” you mean that he will never get bi-partisan support again, sure. Independents typically don’t like liars. Plus, why did he wait until after the election to come out as conservative? Is it because he would have lost badly? Yes. The only opportunity he has it’s at higher office in the state, where the field is already crowded with MAGA grovelers. Good luck dude, but make no mistake, Dallas will not re-elect him.
Furrealyo@reddit (OP)
He cannot run for Mayor again due to term limits, so that’s a dead end.
If he was wanted to rise higher in Texas politics, he had no choice but to switch parties. He has nothing to lose.

That law that you have that caps the cost of life saving medical procedures like kidney transplants and heart surgery.

And even though its a private organization, NTTA is a socialist practice: collecting money from everyone to provide a road and free towing services on said roads.

Lmao. The only thing Dallas has on NYC is lower cost of living. Dallas has higher crime, our state has higher infant and maternal mortality and it’s going up, we absolutely do not have the same comforts and conveniences, public transit being a massive example not to mention a host of social services to actually help people. NYC isn’t about to lose free enterprise, it actually has roughly the same small businesses per capita as Dallas, and obviously is a massive economic powerhouse. Johnson kissing up to MAGA fascists by trying to put down NYC is hilarious. Republicans destroy cities and states far worse than any Dem does.

StroodleNoodles@reddit
I think we need to look more into who feeds the pockets of these candidates for Mayor BEFORE voting for them.
For instance, AIPAC, they seem to have their dirty money involved with a lot of folks in DC. Johnson’s National Republican Mayors Association (RMA) has paid a little over $10,000 directly on candidates and $6,500 to a handful of local conservative political organizations, according to publicly available records filed with the IRS.
Johnson, who served for years as a Democrat in the Texas Legislature, switched to the GOP just months after winning reelection for a second mayoral term in 2023. Then he created the RMA.
The RMA was formed to “support the election of Republican mayors and candidates across America, to build and expand upon their [successes] in office, and to advocate for Republican leadership of American’s cities,” according to its public IRS reports.
The group often backs candidates with press releases and posts on its social media accounts — and touts their victories when they happen.

People are bothered by the fact that he lied to his voters and ran as a Democrat, taking Democrat donations, all the while having already decided to switch parties after getting elected. In other words, he lied and deceived his way into office. This city is solid Blue, if he'd run as a Republican he absolutely wouldn't have gotten any donations from people who support Democratic and liberal causes. He's an ignoramus and a liar, but of course that's on brand for Republicans.
AustinInDallasTx@reddit
Funny how y’all love to pretend it’s about “policy” when a politician flips parties mid-term without a mandate and starts parroting national GOP talking points like he’s running for Fox News contributor of the month. No one thought Eric Johnson was amazing before... he barely made waves. But switching parties after winning a nonpartisan office is a bait-and-switch, not a policy evolution.
As for your fear mongering, nobody in Dallas is copying New York grocery co-ops or taxing people based on skin tone. You’re just name-dropping boogeymen and hoping people don’t notice how corporate giveaways and neglect under Johnson have made Dallas less livable for working folks.
But sure, let’s pretend his party switch was a brave stand and not a self-serving audition for higher office. Tiresome indeed.

It needs to be pointed out to our Dear Mayor and some similarly ignorant people on this thread that socialism is NOT 'when the government does something' or 'when taxes pay for something.'
Socialism is when workers own the companies they work for and keep all the profits they create. Capitalism is when people who have money but don't work are allowed to own companies and keep some of the profits they didn't produce.
Socialism and Capitalism are economic systems, not forms of government.

So like Publix, which I don't hear bitching about profits and competition and needing to merge like Kroger and Albertsons are doing. So which ones are employee owned vs owned by someone that wants a bigger yacht? Oh right.
noncongruent@reddit
WinCo is also employee-owned. I've talked to employees there when I go and they're generally very happy about that fact.
neverendingnonsense@reddit
I regret voting for this guy in the run off everyday.
noncongruent@reddit
You couldn't have known he had already decided to switch parties at that point, but lied about it to his voters.
Jeffreyknows@reddit
Reminder, he won his office by running as a Democrat
noncongruent@reddit
And given that he switched pretty much immediately after winning, and considering that switching parties in modern times isn't something to be done without extensive forethought and consideration, it's a very safe bet that he was planning on switching long before winning, probably long before running for reelection. That means he lied to get elected, and even though Dallas mayoral elections are ostensibly non-partisan, the reality is that most of the people that donated to his campaign though they were donating to a Democrat, not someone planning to switch to being a Republican as soon as he took office. If he'd switched before running he almost certainly would not have been elected, and a Democratic party candidate would have come forward to challenge him.
JustMyThoughts2525@reddit
So will Dallas get rid of all subsidies and tax breaks for all corporations in the city?
Boring_Impress@reddit
No silly. That’s the good socialism. He only wants to get ride of the socialism that helps poor people.

Isn’t kinda mind blowing seeing what Republicans do when they have zero checks against their power. No one in their way, so they just start doing everything they’ve always dreamed of, right out in the open.
They hat each and every one of us.

Hahah Dallas not suffering from government bureaucrats. That’s hilarious. Dallas is notoriously difficult to deal with to do anything under the government Johnson runs.

Can we make the city a sanctuary city from potato shaped hypocrites who cheat on their wife.
captainburger31@reddit
Deal was clear.
He knew that, barring a Crockett-tier national spotlight, he had limited options with the dems in Texas with Senate/Governorship being longshots.
However, he switches to the GOP (after securing his election), all of a sudden he hands the GOP their biggest city and rises up on the Totem pole. He likely made agreements for subsequent support for Senate or Governorship in exchange for Dallas.
Furrealyo@reddit (OP)
Agreed. You’re absolutely correct.
hkral11@reddit
This guy is an idiot. His job is mostly a figurehead while city council and the city manager actually run everything.
SGJango@reddit
I'm willing to bet that this guy and 90% of the "far right" don't even know what Socialism is.
goodjuju123@reddit
Law amd order? Has the Mayor ever driven in the streets of Dallas? Does he know it’s the city most likely to be killed in a Traffic accident in the country and, as a result, has some of the highest insurance rates in the country? The police don’t even respond to 911 calls in Dallas.
MC_ScattCatt@reddit
Bit ironic coming from him. He gets paid to be the mayor and doesn’t show up to do his job.

Yea, the roads and highways in Dallas can surely, positively, definitely, 100%, "trust me", accommodate few million more cars.
Current_Analysis_104@reddit
He doesn’t speak for me. I value human beings and treating them with compassion and respect, regardless of their legal status. I believe in truth, which is a rare commodity in our leadership these days. I believe in justice and balance of power, not a dictatorship. I DON’T believe ANYTHING that comes out of his mouth, Fox entertainment, or NewsMax.
permalink_save@reddit
And yet DPD is not assisting ICE unless legally required, so I don't get what he is talking about with this racist shit when it's not reality. We aren't safe from that shit because of some effort on his part, we are safe from it because it's not the boogey man that GOP is using.
We need to recall him already. We got a serious bait and switch with him. Thank fuck he doesn't have as much power as other mayors get.
zakats@reddit
This goes right up there with "circle circle, dot dot, now I have my cootie shot" for efficacy for things that exist in reality.

How profoundly childish.
Key_Ad_4357@reddit
When he switched parties after he was elected, he should have been removed. The people voted in a Democratic, so since he switched the democrat that ran against him in the primaries and got the next highest votes should have been installed.
Banjo_2-Row@reddit
In case y’all were unaware, Democratic Socialists of America has a North Texas chapter that meets every month in Dallas, and we would be happy to have you.
MihrSialiant@reddit
Oh ya? No socialism in the city? Ok bud. Guess Dallas is losing its police, fire, and all public services then. Where can I buy the road I live on? Cant be having public roads, thats socialism!

Seems to be by far one of the best run large US cities. I have a close relative moving to Dallas due to a job opportunity. I’ve been helping her.
Was quite pleasantly surprised at how good the city is: easy to get around, easy to drive, relatively clean, people are friendly, apartment rent prices relatively low, not being harassed by miscreants, a good arts scene.
We are not hardcore political either side. I’ve spent time in other large US cities. Dallas is way better as far as infrastructure and being well run. Despite the dorkiness of his tweet, Dallas is clearly doing something right.
Far_Mistake9314@reddit

Democrats should hate this. Republicans should also hate this. Finally, something we can all hate together.
kwill729@reddit
Law and order? Literally everyone in Dallas complains about police not responding to calls. I used to live in a very expensive neighborhood and we had our own private police patrol because city police do.not.respond. I’ve since downsized out of that neighborhood and thankfully have not needed to call the police, but it8s pretty common to hear gunfire at night.
stutteringwhales@reddit
Does this mean they are taking away all of the sidewalks in Dallas?
TakeATrainOrBusFFS@reddit
So who do we want for mayor? Who’s actually a cool person who could drive progressive and also not alienate all the Dallas moderates and conservatives?
vitaminz1990@reddit
Finally something I agree with him on

Wait until he finds out what MAGA really think of black men.
nihouma@reddit
The way literally the entire political establishment, Republican and Democrat, are losing all their marbled over a guy who called for city funded grocery stores be opened in food deserts is wild to me (something Baldwin,FL, a rural town outside of Jacksonville did after they couldn't get a privately owned grocery to come in, though they closed it last year), and free to ride buses (something Kansas City, MO has).
Frankly I could care less about the platform of a guy in NYC who is running on making the lives of every day New Yorkers better. And if he's unsuccessful the voters can vote him out in the next general election (assuming he wins the general, dude has only won a primary).
Because the way people are suffering in the USA, Dallas and NYC alike, something needs to fundamentally change
