Are (sexy) car washes a real thing?

I just saw a snippet of glee where a car wash was seemingly performed by cheerleaders in half bikini / half uniform for fundraiser purposes.
I would like to know if this type of car washes are a thing in real life, or just a Hollywood gimmick for movies and tv shows ? Thanks
orpheus1980@reddit
I've seen it occasionally. They aren't as raunchy or eye popping as shown in movies or TV. Plus women being in bikini tops or sports bras in public or sunbathing in parks in bikinis in summers is pretty common. So it's not like women washing cars in skimpy clothes has some extra unusual ogle value.
redvinebitty@reddit
I’m very sexy when I wash me car. I wax on, wax off
anneofgraygardens@reddit
I've seen cheerleaders do carwashes as a fundraiser, but tbh I don't think they're very "sexy". It's just a bunch of teenaged girls washing cars, having fun with their friends. They're not like, doing sexy poses or anything. Life isn't usually like porn (and fortunately it is pretty much never like Glee).
BananaMapleIceCream@reddit
And those teen girls are t interested in pervert old dudes.
sharrrper@reddit
Get in there nice a deep like
Draconuus95@reddit
God. That movie has been popping up everywhere recently. I need to go watch it again.
CupBeEmpty@reddit
Ha and having a couple competitive cheerleaders in my extended family apparently they were always interested in guys their own age with stable jobs and prospects.
Outrageous-Pin-4664@reddit
I assume that by "their own age" you mean 2-3 years older, in college, and driving nice cars. :)
No-Lunch4249@reddit
Who hurt you, outrageous pin?
Outrageous-Pin-4664@reddit
I grew up in the 70s, and graduated high school in 81. It was my experience then that girls liked older guys. That was my experience both as a younger guy observing the girls my own age, and as an older guy observing how I suddenly became popular with girls 2-3 years younger than me when I hit college.
No one hurt me, and I didn't hurt anyone else. I just made a small joke on the internet relating to my high school years. Take a deep breath and lighten up a little.
annabassr@reddit (OP)
2-3 years is not « older » lol
Outrageous-Pin-4664@reddit
No, it's not. Not in the grand scheme of things.
Those 2-3 years tend to make more difference in high school. At least they did when I was a teenager in the 70s. They were the difference between having a job or being broke, and between having a car or having to be driven places by your parents. That difference disappeared very quickly after graduation, but it was there in high school.
I realize that younger people today probably don't get that. Many of them wait until they're 18 before getting their license, they don't have jobs, and they don't go out on "dates" the way we did back then. They can't understand why having a car and a source of income would make a guy preferable as a boyfriend over younger guys who didn't have those things yet. It was a different time.
CupBeEmpty@reddit
Eh the two I’m thinking of are the same age as their husbands and they didn’t have a lot of nice stuff at the time but do now.
Lzinger@reddit
But they might be interested in getting a good tip.
botulizard@reddit
I have seen a few where somebody working the fundraiser will position the sign they're holding so it looks like they're naked. Though it's less for sexy purposes and more to get people to slow down or stop.
TexasPrarieChicken@reddit
Few years back I came upon an accident. There’s a rotary (circular intersection, kinda like a British roundabout) in town with a couple of gas stations, an atm and a small park with a low wall.
When I came up to the rotary I saw a couple of police cruisers and a car that had jumped the curb, gone through the wall and was in the park.
Then I glanced to my left and saw that the local cheerleaders were holding a fundraiser car wash at the gas station. They were in bikini tops and shorts. I knew immediately how this accident happened.
Because when I came back after running my errands the cheerleaders were all covered up. He ruined it for the rest of us.
Best-Cantaloupe-9437@reddit
He ruined ogling nearly naked teens for you and everyone else? Buddy I hope you were a high schooler/college aged too otherwise that’s just creepy
MattWolf96@reddit
Yeah, maybe this sort of thing was kinda common in the 80's and 90's?
I couldn't ever see a high approving it today though it's as creepy as hell.
If it's adults doing it I wouldn't care though.
IHSV1855@reddit
This is exactly my experience as well. Hell, I’ve seen it much more frequently being done by the football team than the cheerleaders.
kaimcdragonfist@reddit
Glee isn’t a very accurate portrayal of most of high school life.
At least I’m pretty sure the others in my school’s show choir weren’t all banging each other. If they were I sure wasn’t invited
Defiant_Ingenuity_55@reddit
Never seen one like you might see in movies. I’ve seen youth groups and teams doing them but they aren’t doing it to be “sexy.” They’re doing it to raise money.
discourse_friendly@reddit
Kinda sorta, but maybe not.
There are definitely cheerleaders in bathing suits or bikini tops who wash cars for fund raisers. its usually high school though and not college . so its not really sexy per say
Swine70@reddit
They happened, Male and female ones, normally they are done for charity events. Hell we used to do them in highschool to fund prom and such. Now that I'm an old man I realize how much we got away with in the 80s and it wasn't caught on camera!
annabassr@reddit (OP)
Damn
rogue780@reddit
I'm curious why infidelity is so widely accepted in France.
annabassr@reddit (OP)
Huh
rogue780@reddit
I'm curious why infidelity is so widely accepted in France.
devilbunny@reddit
Yeah they were still occasionally around into the 90s. Was joking about it with one of my high school classmates the other day. She said "you know, in retrospect, that was kinda effed up."
rogue780@reddit
pretty rare, though it might depend on the geographical location. Last time I got a fundraiser car wash, one of the people doing it was having a conversation with their schizophrenia imaginary friend. ymmv
NoGuarantee3961@reddit
I think there was a time when it happened some...bikini carwashes etc, but almost certainly less if at all since the 90's. I could believe it was a fairly common thing in certain areas of the US in the 80's
Born_in_67@reddit
I live near Tampa, Florida. Years back (10-15) a local DJ would have the strip clubs promote a “sexy car wash” for charity. So yeah, it is a thing.
Responsible_Olive782@reddit
Most of the time they have like 7 cars to get through and they usually have a parent chaperone keeping watch just in case
jarheadjay77@reddit
Sounds like You’d be blown away by bikini barista coffee stands. 🤷♂️
big_data_mike@reddit
My coworker took me to one without telling me that’s what it was. Also I had never even heard of the concept. I was pleasantly surprised.
annabassr@reddit (OP)
That is a controlled environment lol
big_data_mike@reddit
There is an actual intentionally sexy car wash in Greensboro, NC. It is owned by the same owner as a strip club in the same city.
bwurtz94@reddit
I’ve never seen one. I remember when I was a freshman in high school the football or baseball players did a Speedo car wash. It was very busy.
But now most fundraiser car washes people are properly clothed and a lot of people just pull in and make a donation and don’t get their car washed.
DefrockedWizard1@reddit
they were outside the walmart a few weeks ago at the curb, but they needed better logistics as you couldn't see them until you were basically past them, so there wasn't a line of cars. if they can't figure out something as basic as that, I'm not going to trust them to wash the car
No-Conversation9818@reddit
There's a strip club in the town over that has topless car washes
P00PooKitty@reddit
Look at the flags of the posters saying yes.
annabassr@reddit (OP)
What does that mean lol
BoseSounddock@reddit
The fundraiser car wash is a thing and it could be cheerleaders that are raising money. Could also be marching band, JROTC, the soccer team or any other youth group or organization.
I’m guessing the Glee thing with the cheerleaders was because media regularly oversexualizes cheerleaders and dancers. In reality if there was a cheerleader fundraiser car wash, they’d probably all be wearing grey t shirts and school colored shorts. At least that’s how it is where I’ve lived.
DrProfessorSatan@reddit
Yes, and I can tell I’m getting old because last time I saw one my only thought was, “I don’t think she knows how to wash a car and not leave swirl marks.”
1happynudist@reddit
Thought that when I was young and never let them wash my car
DrProfessorSatan@reddit
You can always spot the car guys.
“Damn, she’s wearing a thong!”
“Pffft! And damaging the paint!”
1happynudist@reddit
Not a car guy , just don’t think they will do a good job , I appreciate the views but I want the car to be washed well , not missing areas
GPB07035@reddit
They aren’t selling the car wash.
1happynudist@reddit
I know , but I want my car clean
rubiconsuper@reddit
I’m not even a car guy, I just don’t want my stuff messed up
OJSimpsons@reddit
Those car washes aren't for car people lol
siandresi@reddit
Lmao same, I’m like is that brush clean and show me your cleaning supplies
440Dart@reddit
This is the reason why I’ve never gone to them. So what the local strippers want some extra cash, I don’t want to have to correct the paint again.
DrProfessorSatan@reddit
Any fundraising car wash really. I don’t care if Jasper needs money to go to camp. I’ll just give you $20 and save my paint.
KPhoenix83@reddit
Happens
G00dSh0tJans0n@reddit
Indeed. Pretty rare though, but I've seen a couple frats and sororities do it
KPhoenix83@reddit
I saw one last week, cheerleaders bikinis the whole 9 yards.
capsaicinintheeyes@reddit
did it work? were they deluged with neighborhood dads in hatchback sedans?
KPhoenix83@reddit
Yes, but its Morth Carolina, so they were all dodge challengers mustangs and pickup trucks.
byebybuy@reddit
I can smell the 22% APR from here.
CarBarnCarbon@reddit
And a bunch of young soldiers that are about to have terrible credit.
trailruns@reddit
I member seeing that in the 90's on Stevens Creek Auto Row.
IONTOP@reddit
Harper's in Greensboro...
Suppafly@reddit
Rarely. I'm sure they exist somewhere, but I've never seen one. Even the cheerleader ones I've seen generally are wearing normal clothes, and often have boys helping them, no skimpy bikinis on display.
FunkySalamander1@reddit
Most of the fundraising car washes I see near where I live are done by school students not trying to look sexy.
irraticbreakfast11@reddit
Yes , very real. A gentlemen's club was participating in a fundraiser and were giving car washes for a donation.
LibrarianAcrobatic21@reddit
Haven't seen one in a while, but I remember them from whe I was a child.
fanservice999@reddit
Many years ago, I went to a charity topless car wash. It was both men and women washing cars with no tops on. It was a breast cancer awareness charity car wash. Many years before that. A strip club had a full nude car wash thing going on like every other Saturday for a couple months during the summer. It got shut down due to men, who where in the cars as the women washed them naked, who where masturbating inside the cars.
TweeksTurbos@reddit
You mean a car scratch?
GrendelKhanmac@reddit
I used to see the occasional bikini bike wash at the larger bike rally (Daytona, etc.). Old men staring at 20-30 somethings but pretty harmless. Hardly sexy though.
crispyrhetoric1@reddit
There was a coffee place where I used to live that had servers at the drive through in bikinis. It closed pretty quickly.
anonymouse278@reddit
There was a commercial bikini car wash in Chicago in the 90s. The neighborhood it was in hated it and I think they eventually succeeded in driving it out. In the time it was there I never saw a single car go into it (it was inside a building; can't be ogling the bikini-clad employees for free) so I don't think it was very successful anyway.
NewLawGuy24@reddit
Nope
procrasstinating@reddit
One of the girls sports teams in my high school did a topless car wash fund raiser. Young girls holding signs on the street advertising. Car wash in the back parking lot of the school. They made bank. The girls were all too short to reach the tops of the cars so they just washed the rest of the cars and laughed at all the perverts.
PartyPorpoise@reddit
I am very happy with the way that story ended.
BananaMapleIceCream@reddit
Yeah, parents were totally okay with that, right? /s
stiletto929@reddit
This is hilarious!
ConsiderationFew7599@reddit
I was expecting this to end with men in swim trunks doing the washing and being "topless." This was much better.
sneezhousing@reddit
Real? Yes
Common? No
It happens but it's rare
PartyPorpoise@reddit
I figure it’s something that used to be a bit more common than it is now. I can’t imagine many high schools today signing off a bikini car wash.
bestray06@reddit
Yep, like anything else movies make it seem more common because it serves a narrative
davidmar7@reddit
It's a real thing for sure here in Daytona Beach, Florida during bike week. Other than that it's not very common at all. Just events like this.
Ringo-chan13@reddit
High school girls wash cars in bikinis to fundraise, yes its real...
annabassr@reddit (OP)
High schoolers is crazy
CaucusInferredBulk@reddit
20-30 years ago cheerleader carwashes were a common fundraiser. Seems like the are not acceptable any longer.
FuckIPLaw@reddit
The zoomers are busy fighting a war on reality and basic human instincts, and they've gotten to s point where it's dangerous to admit you find the adult female form attractive online. The form is, despite what they like to pretend, separate from the mind. That's literally why we have an age of consent and why it's not somewhere between 14 and 16 depending on the individual, but instead somewhere between 16 and 18 depending on the country. The pendulum will swing back sooner or later.
lyrasorial@reddit
Well this is the creepiest comment I've encountered in the wild. 😳
FuckIPLaw@reddit
It's not creepy. What's creepy is the handwringing and the way the zoomers have pathologized something perfectly normal.
lyrasorial@reddit
I'm a highschool teacher. I don't look at my students sexually. What you're describing is not normal, it's just normal for you and you think everyone does it.
FuckIPLaw@reddit
And it becomes normal the second they turn 18?
I'm sorry, but you're lying to yourself here. The fact is that the line is arbitrary and the whole reason we draw it is because there's a gap between sexual maturity and mental and emotional maturity. As a teacher you have an additional layer of power dynamics making the ethical issues even more significant, but it's kind of irrelevant to the point.
lyrasorial@reddit
No, it's also creepy for adults over 30 to view 19 year olds sexually.
FuckIPLaw@reddit
And yet also completely normal.

I went to one at a strip club during COVID because they couldn’t make money inside. They did a good job
ian2121@reddit
Strippers always seem to drive nice cars, they probably are good at detailing
kiefoween@reddit
That's such a good idea on their part 😂
mahrog123@reddit
Yes, for lonely men.
Vivid_Witness8204@reddit
I've seen them but not in the last 30 or 40 years.
BankManager69420@reddit
It’s definitely a thing, but it would never be done by high schoolers irl.
therealdrewder@reddit
Not anymore.
annabassr@reddit (OP)
Enlightning!
AdLiving1435@reddit
Went to one ages ago your better off to just go to the strip club.
elqueco14@reddit
Car washes as fund raisers are a thing, I don't think I've ever seen a "sexy" one, maybe if you live in a college town. But typically the ones I saw or heard about were done through churches or for like kids sports teams, so definitely no bikinis involved
440Dart@reddit
Local strip club has done this a few times as well as the local Harley dealership.
CupBeEmpty@reddit
I haven’t seen one in a long time. But even by my college years I was thinking “those girls are too young to be doing that.”
No_Internet_4098@reddit
Yeah, it’s a real thing. I find it incredibly creepy because it’s usually teen girls washing the cars of men old enough to be their dads or granddads.
whosudady@reddit
Yes, and the blonds use laundry powder soap
Aggressive-Emu5358@reddit
From time to time sure. Usually a college or high school fundraiser
BoseSounddock@reddit
No family with a dusty minivan will accidentally pull into a sexy car wash. You have to seek them out.
But they do exist.
Quirky_Chicken_1840@reddit
I’ve never been to one. I’ve heard they exist.
I went through the car wash with my daughter and she saw all the colors of the soap on the windshield in this automatic car washing machine and she said what is that and I said every time a car is washed a unicorn is killed
But she knew my sense of humor and she laughed
I think those sexy car washes are basically for a videos
JoeCensored@reddit
About once a summer I drive by a bikini car wash.
Bluemonogi@reddit
I haven’t seen one.
DrMindbendersMonocle@reddit
they are real, but not too common.
shelwood46@reddit
Usually done as a fundraiser, not an actual car wash. You might come upon one randomly but probably not. Exist but rare.
annabassr@reddit (OP)
That seems to be the consensus!
Express-Stop7830@reddit
It happens (usually, though, it's under age sports fundraisers). But they often drop their sponges and then sponges get rocks in them and then they scratch your paint job.
annabassr@reddit (OP)
Oh that’s something that never crossed my mind
trey74@reddit
Yes. The local Twin Peaks does them, and Hooters used to before they closed. Sororities do it also, it' a BIG fund raiser for them.
annabassr@reddit (OP)
Makes sense, thanks
BoopleSnoot921@reddit
Yes, they happen.
Scrappy_The_Crow@reddit
They were not unusual to see up through the early '90s, but I don't recall seeing one in a couple of decades.
NedThomas@reddit
I can go get my car washed by a team of women wearing nothing but bikini bottoms right now.
They kinda suck at the actual car washing part, though.
Storage-Helpful@reddit
They were pretty common when I was a teenager, for fundraisers and sports teams. Haven't seen one in years though.
Mushrooming247@reddit
Yes, the college near me does this, I don’t know which group is fundraising, but they do have sexy girls in bikinis who will wash your car.
Also, I have heard of fraternities advertising a “bikini car wash” where you pull up and all of the frat bros come out in Speedos or bikinis to wash your car, I think that’s hilarious but I’ve never seen it.
Sad_Construction_668@reddit
It’s much less common now. It was definitely a thing in the 70’s and 80’s when the sexualization of high schoolers was at its most publicly acceptable.
Remarkable_Table_279@reddit
car washes are a thing…the sexy part has died out…especially if it’s for kids.
But my adult friends did it in their 20s to 30s
kaleb2959@reddit
I haven't seen this in 20 years or more. It used to be a pretty common high school and even middle school fundraising gimmick. I guess people wised up to just how gross that is.
-Boston-Terrier-@reddit
Technically any time I wash my car it’s a sexy car wash.
psychocabbage@reddit
Texas here. It's a thing. Usually a few cheerleaders in uniform to draw the people in and others doing the wash. Could be part of the support group and volunteers. Generally not worth it for a less than good car wash. I remember Dad taking me through one when I was a teen and once the girls were close I was like it's not the good looking ones doing the wash. We laughed about how they have the ugly ones doing the work and hoped they didn't scratch his truck.
oswin13@reddit
We did it when I was in high school. Looking back I can't believe the school allowed it.
TinkerMelle@reddit
We did them in high school to fundraise. Not "sexy" per SE, but bikini tops and shorts, and holding signs on the side of the road to lure in customers is real enough.
riarws@reddit
Some of the girls’ sports teams used to do them as fundraisers when I was in high school (1990s). There were 2-3 every year. I thought it was weird back then, too.
Kestrel_Iolani@reddit
In the Pacific Northwest, bikini baristas (drive through coffee stands) are more common.
BananaMapleIceCream@reddit
I’d say it was an 80’s and 90’s thing. There is no chance I’d sign off on that now as a parent.
wytfel@reddit
Its probably close to 20 years since I've seen one
UnfairHoneydew6690@reddit
The only time I’ve ever seen one in person was like 15 years ago and the people in bikinis were men.
linds3ybinds3y@reddit
Yup, frats definitely do them too. This is immediately what I thought of.
TheRateBeerian@reddit
Here in Orlando there used to be a couple of bikini car washes, the girls was basically strippers and wore the skimpiest bikinis imaginable and would bend over and do various posers while dumb guys paid way too much for a mediocre car wash
AdamOnFirst@reddit
Feels like this is one of the million things our societal fun police killed after the 90s.
bazilbt@reddit
I guess it used to happen. I've never seen or heard of it. I've heard of highschool teams washing cars but not in Bikinis.
Rarewear_fan@reddit
Yes. Come to my house tomorrow
Karamist623@reddit
Yep.
big_sugi@reddit
I had a friend who organized one at Hooters as a fundraiser. About half the girls were Hooters waitresses, and the other half were former waitresses who’d become strippers.
The advertising wasn’t particularly effective, and it wasn’t sufficiently visible from the road, so they didn’t have as many customers as I’d have expected.
c3534l@reddit
Seems far less common than it once was.
chickenskinduffelbag@reddit
One time about twenty years ago I had a pretty bad ass old car. I was at the auto parts store getting something for one of the cars when I noticed a poster that said the Hooters girls were gone be there washing cars and taking pictures with cars. All proceeds going to charity, of course. So I got the car all washed and shined up to get a picture with a bunch of hot ladies crawling on my car. I got there and the average Hooters girl was maybe 16 years old. I was so angry, I didn’t get a car wash and I certainly didn’t want any pictures. But disturbingly enough, there were plenty of guys that wanted exactly that.
itcheyness@reddit
Yeah, there's a strip club in my city that does it.
0rangeMarmalade@reddit
Yep. In the 90s my ballet school did one every year to raise money for costumes and to rent a theater. Mostly older teenagers and young adults participated. The younger kids and parents ran the bake sale.
Common_Vagrant@reddit
Not much anymore. I work in a stripclub and one of the girls did full time work as a pointless dent repair person (dubbed her self a dent bitch), she did detailing as well. That business was successful so she decided to make a new one with bikini washes and it did not do well. As a business it’s not super lucrative but as a fundraiser maybe?
Graflex01867@reddit
There’s one or two high school team car washes over the summer in my town, but they’re not “sexy” at all. Just kids in shorts and T-shirts washing cars. (They usually make custom shirts for the event. Not thin transparent white ones. That’s only in the movies.)
vengefulgrapes@reddit
I’m surprised that everybody is saying yes here. I thought they weren’t real.
Hatweed@reddit
They happen, but they’re just not common enough to say they’re a regular occurrence.

A local Gentleman's (strip) club put panels up around their parking lot and held a nude car wash for some charity. Business was good but when the wind kicked up they had to clothes it down (Newscaster pun).

More likely sorority girls in college/university. So, usually adults and not minors still in high school. It's dramatized to make it seem more common on shows. But, it does happen.
SageMitso@reddit
Any car wash im at is a sexy car wash. It becomes sexy cause I'm there.

Timely-Field1503@reddit
A local "entertainment facility" does them occasionally locally. Usually as a fund raiser for a charity.
Occasionally you'll see sororities do bikini car washes.
More often, high schools will have car washes as fund raisers for the booster club or a charity.
If I saw a high school do a bikini car wash, I would drive the other way - that just seems weird!
dachsie-knitter-22@reddit

Sabre3001@reddit
Yes but mostly in the past and mostly as a fundraiser (not a legitimate business).
chloeiprice@reddit
All the time. They are usually raising money to fund a trip for school or sports.
Kilane@reddit
It tends to be high schoolers. It is more of a fundraiser like a lemonade stand. I don’t know that I’d choose the word sexy, but they already wear bikinis and their uniform in public.
Cookie sales and donut sales happen too.
