It's official - New speed limit in the U.S. - truckers in this state will be required to drive at only 65 mph under a controversial law that is now official

Any drivers in NM can confirm this?
bloodsoed@reddit
First off as rough as 40 is. You can hardly maintain 65 due to all the bumps and potholes. Anything faster can get sketchy
TruckeronI5@reddit
Why does that title sound like clickbait?
dirty_hooker@reddit
Because it is. It deliberately avoids giving details while using inflammatory language.
AndyLorentz@reddit
It’s a bill introduced in the NM senate. Hasn’t even had debate or anything, but the article acts as if it has already passed. It’s a shitty website
foreverlost1nsea@reddit
But title says "it's official" uh
CCCL350@reddit
Time for stealth radar detectors.... this is what many local CA drivers use. You can tell whose out of state when they're holding up traffic at 55mph. Its no wonder mega fleets avoid CA.
santanzchild@reddit
Seen a dude on YouTube years ago with a long nose pete.
Had a radar detector hidden in his engine compartment. State boys spent close to an hour climbing all over that truck trying to find it.
CCCL350@reddit
Cops in reality don't have radar detector-detectors. They just get an alert of a radar, but that could be within a 7 mile radius. In this YT case, the driver probably had a piece of crap outdated non-stealth radar detector and got lasered by state trooper's speed trap. Also, there's no need to hide anything in an engine compartment.
When a radar hit alert comes through, the radar user just turns the unit off. Unidens have mute/kills switch buttons and it goes silent. Ive already confirmed this with several cops. Theres no way of them finding out, unless they have a laser gun pointed directly at a vehicle that has a laser radar scrambler.
When pulled over, just take off radar unit and stash it.
It is rare AF for the cops to throughly search a rig. All they do is look inside the cab and ask if there's alcohol in the fridge during an inspection.
Ive been told by police insider that if a cop finds a radar unit in ur bag or stashed, to just say that it was your for ur personal car and that you'd took ur valuables to avoid getting it stolen from ur personal car.

If reducing speed reduces crashes than the only logical thing to do is reduce the speed of all vehicles on the road. Having trucks go slow as cars go 80-90 mph around them just causes more problems
Fast_Morning_1175@reddit
Given that California has one of the lowest per capita death rates for vehicular accidents, your statement doesn’t really hold weight. Meanwhile states like Texas run constant campaign to reduce the fatalities.
Laffenor@reddit
Not to mention Europe, where truck speed limit is 50mph and cars literally have no speed limit on large areas (Germany), all the while seeing only one third as many traffic days per capita as USA.
angrydeuce@reddit
Truckers are just the easiest target, as always. People lose their shit over a truck in the left lane but that sure wont stop them from sidling up next to the truck and preventing them from getting out of the fuckin left lane, heavens no.
You know I once had some dumb bitch tell me she deliberately camps out next to trucks and hangs out there to "block the sun"? These are the people we share the road with.
sandd65@reddit
Ask them if they ever seen a tire blowout on a semi. If they say no then I tell them I promise if you do see one blow you will never get next to a truck again.
AgentOmegaNM@reddit
I used to have a friend that would actively hang out next to semis on the highway because they would “block the wind”.
She wasn’t allowed to drive anywhere with us after that came out of her mouth.
Q7017@reddit
We're easy targets because we're an electoral minority. If they did it to Class D motorists, they'd lose favor with their constituency.
Dm-me-a-gyro@reddit
Truckers used to be able to deliver the President to the Oval Office. It’s not the minority, it’s the race to the bottom and the erosion of labor as a voting bloc
angrydeuce@reddit
Oh, definitely. That's always been a fringe benefit of killing off unions left and right, it eliminates a large contingent of voters that actually had enough sway to turn an election.
My grandfather, all my uncles, all my cousins, my mom and dad, all proud union members. My grandfather ran a local in the 70s and early 80s, he would be out there on the picket line with those guys every day every time they had to strike. All my uncles, too...hell, I carried a sign myself, out there with grandpa fighting the good fight on behalf of the working man.
Im glad he's not around to see this shit today, it would break his heart.
Dead_Namer@reddit
It literally works like that in every other country, in Germany the cars have no speed limits in places and the truck limit is 50mph.
Every country in mainland Europe has truck limits of 50-56mph.
Riyeko@reddit
We all know this. Any driver who's been out here with half a brain for 6mos knows this.
But because we're federally regulated, we are the ones that have to suffer.
Not the idiots doing 90mph in snow and high winds with ice covered roads at 2am.
Cats_Are_Aliens_@reddit
Maybe they have it all wrong and we haven’t been going fast enough this whole time
TheMetalWolf@reddit
Oh they are certainly trying in certain states.
ConsequenceSweaty241@reddit
To many guys will crash if they go more than 65 so good 👍
Nice-position-6969@reddit
It has passed and went into effect on July 1.
They did the right lane only for trucks in city limits a couple of years ago, and now this. Like many blue states, they want to heavily regulate the trucking industry to get as much possible revenue as possible. Think I'm wrong? Look at all the states with speed limits for trucks and look who has been in office the most and you'll see the same agendas.
NM has always been about making money off of trucks. There is a reason they are one of the only states you need a permit and pay per mile to drive on their shit roads that have nothing to see. Most don't know about this because now that permit is electronic and doesn't need to be carried in the can anymore. Your company handles all that.
I-10 through all 3 small towns you will always see a state patrol out there revenue retrieving. There are usually 3 in Lordsburg at any given time, 2 in Deming, and 4 scattered throughout Las Cruces. Day or night you'll see them. Now instead of waiting inside the 65mph zones, they will venture out further for that $250 ticket that people will just pay as opposed to the $120 ticket they may give to a 4 wheeler. More money in those tickets for truckers than the cars now. Don't forget, just because your dash says 65 doesn't mean they won't write a 66mph ticket. Yes, those troopers are that petty and will absolutely write a 1mph over ticket. Remember, that bill says limited to 65 so 66 will get them that $250 very easy.
HowlingWolven@reddit
Not what the state’s own bill tracker says.
HowlingWolven@reddit
Not right. NM SB 226-25 is dead.
qaf0v4vc0lj6@reddit
If the State limits speeds seperately from trucks and issues a statewide truck-specific speed limit, they are effectively creating a maximum wage on milage truckers. That should be illegal unless they require hourly page to compensate.
cosp85classic@reddit
Tell California that. They have been 55MPH on trucks for decades now. Applies to any vehicle with 3 or more axels.
HowlingWolven@reddit
CHP lets you get away with 62 ime.
qaf0v4vc0lj6@reddit
I ain’t telling California shit. They’re fucking up enough without my advice.
goonout353@reddit
A lot of us can’t even go 65💀
GarrisonWhite2@reddit
So you’re saying that you can’t drive 65?
CashWideCock@reddit
Some of us choose to not drive over 65. Personally, I drive 65 or the speed limit, whichever is slower. I will hammer down when passing.
rectumrooter107@reddit
Once I started getting paid hourly, I only did 5 over or 65. When it was by the load...
CashWideCock@reddit
I do a mixture of hourly pay and percentage pay, my driving habits don’t change based on how I get paid.
dersnappychicken@reddit
I’m in a crane. Over 30% of my vehicles weight is 12 feet in the air. We going slow.
CashWideCock@reddit
I do heavy haul, I don’t need to be going fast with 44 tires on the ground and a gross weight of 76k empty and up to 225k loaded.
Mindes13@reddit
If you can't do the speed limit you're a hazard! /S
goonout353@reddit
Personally I wouldn’t go over 65 either , 70 or over feels too much
Slapnuts213@reddit
74, pedal to the metal get the fuck out my way. Fuck the speed limit
Waisted-Desert@reddit
Legislators introduce bills all the time. That doesn't mean they're going anywhere. Often times they introduce bills that have zero chance of passage so they can say, "See what I tried to do to protect our community? The opposition party shot it down because they want you all to die horrible deaths!"

The article OP posted has got be one of the worst written things I have ever read. And it’s kinda fake news.
First off the title is misleading. The law they’re talking about isn’t about the US but about one state, and it’s a proposal….i think….and not law yet. Furthermore I’ve been driving both otr and locally for 14 years and neither I nor anyone I know has ever been encouraged to speed. Actually we’ve always been encouraged not to get speeding tickets.
Furthermore this whole article is really about trying to convince everyone that semis need to drive slower on the freeway and speed differentials are fine and dandy. Its whole point is to get people agitated, angry and arguing. People actually get paid to write this garbage and then some dildo posts it here to stir the pot and get people worked up and arguing.
This whole article is garbage and OP should be ashamed of themselves for posting it here.
Crowhop11@reddit
Bold of you to assume someone got paid to write it and not just something spit out by AI.
GrimHexrcist@reddit
Doesn't even account for the reckless 4 wheeled drivers. I've been OTR for close to 10 yrs. The Majority of accidents involving a semi truck were nearly All caused by some jackass in a car. Very few caused by a semi. That's my observation anyway.
GravitationalEddie@reddit
Everything on that site reeks.
Western-Willow-9496@reddit
How does NM define a “truck tractor”?
CobraWasTaken@reddit
Even if it passes, it's not for "safety" like the article says for the same reason it's not for safety in California. It's for revenue generation. It wouldn't surprise me to see New Mexico do this since they're one of the poorest state governments in the country.
AccomplishedHour8399@reddit
Wont stop idiots from slamming into the back of it
lord_nuker@reddit
Huh, still way faster than I can drive here in Norway. Heck, can’t drive more than 4,5 hours straight either before I’m required to stop for 30-45 minutes forbidden to do any work related stuff. Then I’m allowed to drive another 4,5 hours before I’m required to stop for the day and take 11 hour break. Oh well, I don’t care, I get paid by the hour, not by kilometers driving
DonBoy30@reddit
lol maybe it’s just because I live along I-80 in PA, but if y’all mother fuckers would slow the fuck down in these turns instead of yeeting yourself off the interstate and into some trees every other day, maybe this wouldn’t be a thing.
Bamfurlough@reddit
When I got a loaded tanker I only roll harder than 65 in super flat land.
MoistExcellence@reddit
Click bait horseshit. GFY, bot
maybeinoregon@reddit
I think ours is 55. Not sure if it’s law, or just signs.
I’m so used to 65 (ish lol), that when I took my bike to Montana, and hit Idaho along the way, I saw an 80 mph speed limit sign, and said that’s a damn trap for out of towners.
So the few miles I did on the Interstate I did at 70 lol
MemeLordShrek@reddit
Can we do this in California too
GatorVators@reddit
I see what you did there
Usual_Safety@reddit
Just when I thought New Mexico sucked enough
hotdog11inch@reddit
Wish everyone would refuse to take any loads from new Mexico or deliver anything to new Mexico that would stop this bullshit but it will never happen and other states will start doing the same stuff
FWD_to_twin_turbo@reddit
New Mexico is a deadzone as is broski, a passthrough state. You can probably grab an oilfield load or 2 to go there, but good luck grabbing anything good on a backhaul.
Chuck-Finley69@reddit
Well if you’re going to suggest that and don’t be discriminating. No loads for New Mexico and Old Mexico is only fair
kit_eubanks@reddit
I usually just drive 67 mph anyways... I can giddy up and go if I have to but set cruise to 67 and watch the super truckers go 71 to 73

Laws are on the books for years for this bs. It’s like the expect you to never look up history
Outlaw11091@reddit
I mean, NM isn't exactly a freight mecca or anything and can be easily avoided.
AndromedanPrince@reddit
laughs in governed truck
Armchair-Attorney@reddit
While I don’t love to see speed limits like this, I will take this over a blanket federal rule any day.
Significant-Use-5136@reddit
don’t care the speed mandate it for ALL vehicles.
confusedbystupidity@reddit
Ill keep going my trucks governed limit, 68. Thank you very much...
Reddit_Is_a_jokee@reddit
If they cared about safety they'd force companies to change the pay model.
