Posted by Latte-Catte@reddit | xena | View on Reddit | 29 comments
A community interactive Xena rewatch thread—to encourage those who are rewatching Xena here and there, and those who are just joining us, jump in and discuss!
(I’ll post weekly and follow the episodes chronologically, for those who have time to sneak in some Xena, and those who ^((probably)) don’t.)
This week from July 3 until July 9, we will continue to the next 3 episodes in season 1:
- Mortal Beloved (season1, episode 16)
- The Royal Couple of Thieves (season 1, episode 17)
- The Prodigal (season 1, episode 18)
For those asking: Where can I watch Xena Warrior Princess?
In the US, it is available on Amazon, Prime. It is also on Apple TV. You can purchase season 1 to season 6 on Youtube and Fandago.
For the viewers in Greece, you can watch the entire Xena Warrior Princess in Greek dubbed/subtitled on Xena Greece Youtube Channel (only available in Greece regionally).
For anyone who wish to buy the complete series to finally watch Xena (not sure how to find dubbings in other languages), you should purchase the full Anchor Bay DVD sets on eBay.
And for everyone outside of these region, where Xena is completely unavailable to find, make sure you download adblockers to access certain streaming sites. You may look through this reddit post, AND xenagabrielle.com is now available, but please remember to use AD-BLOCKERS for safety!!

Last week (apologies, it was a crazy week):
Athens City Academy for the Performing Bards: I definitely appreciate this episode more as an adult and think it’s a charming. Unless I’m being very dumb right now and don’t remember, I don’t believe the character Homer comes back in Xena. I think it would’ve been fun for him to have a cameo in later seasons since Gabs was so helpful to him
Fistful or Dinars: absolutely no one cares about Petracles
Warrior… Princess: while I think the following episodes in this vain are funnier (mainly cuz of Meg), I do love the charm of this episode. Seeing Diana as Xena ride side saddle and all her other poor attempts at badassery is always a delight. And Xena trying to be this worlds version of girly is something I can relate to on a similarly silly level 🤣
This week:
Mortal Beloved: I’m not convinced we needed another Marcus episode (I do like him, for the record) nor am I convinced we needed the harpy fight but hey any excuse to see Xena breathe fire is… a reason
The Royal Couple of Thieves: I absolutely adore Autolycus. Even his “bad” episodes bring joy. This is definitely a fun one IMO. I love his camaraderie with both Xena and Gabs over the years.
The Prodigal: I think most of us can agree that the set up for this episode is a bit weak (and also weird stuff like where the fuck are Gabs and Lila’s parents?) but I do love what it does for Gabs character and I also do think Meleager is really fun
AuntyEmfromOz@reddit
Re Academy, Homer doesn't appear again but apparently there's a reference to some of his writings being burned by Dahak in the Hercules episode Let There Be Light, according to the Wiki.
Obviously Petracles did mean something once to Xena, and to Gabrielle in this episode, but there's far more chemistry with Marcus. Perhaps the whole purpose of Petracles was so we could learn more about a very young Xena, or we could see yet another example of Gabrielle's goodness affecting someone else.
Warrior...Princess was good because you got to see yet another side to Xena, a less stoic, scary side, plus Lucy got to broaden her acting range somewhat.
I think Mortal Beloved is important simply because it shows that Xena has 'given up on love' according to her thoughts which Marcus heard. This says a bit about her character and could, at this stage (well before The Debt episodes), explain why Petracles was introduced. She certainly didn't seem like the Xena we've so far come to know, though, which felt somewhat strange.
This is probably my favourite Autolycus visit to XWP.
Last but not least The Prodigal. I agree it was a very poor set-up to get her to go home but it showed me two things: (1) Xena is quiet upset, in her own way, that Gabrielle might not be returning (the look on her face) and (2) it gives a microcosm or reminder to us viewers on how much Gabrielle has changed by this episode - all the things she's learned from the Warrior Princess.
Feesh8@reddit
All excellent points that I agree with! Sad about the Homer info, damnit Davak. I’d like to clarify that my comment about Petracles was more about us fans rather than Xena/Gabs. Of all of Xena’s exes, man and woman alike, this guy is brought up and thought of by us just about zero % of the time (present rewatch about specific episode excluded)
AuntyEmfromOz@reddit
I agree with you. Petracles wasn't memorable at all.
Latte-Catte@reddit (OP)
Til this day, I still have no idea how I'm supposed to fit this ex-fiance Pertracles, into Xena's already inflated 10 years past.
AuntyEmfromOz@reddit
Totally agree!!!! How young is very young? Not sure if I've posted this anywhere else yet, but in the shooting draft/script that wasn't aired, Petracles tells Gabrielle that Xena "...gave herself to me completely." I thought that might have meant he could have been her first lover, so I figured they must have met before Cortese attacked Amphipolis. It would certainly have to have been before Caesar because Borias and everything else happened so quickly after her first crucifixion.
Latte-Catte@reddit (OP)
Xena is implied to be 16 around the time Cortese invaded, or maybe even younger. Lyceus died at the age of 15 I think. So that'd mean either Pertracles is around Xena's age or he's gross 🤮. I personally like to reimagine his role nonexistent in Xena's past lol
AuntyEmfromOz@reddit
I noticed in Royal Couple of Thieves that when Xena explains to Autolycus why she wants to help, she says "There was a time, when I was young, I was wounded in battle--and those people found me."
So my head canon is now that after Xena left Amphipolis, she then met Petracles and he's the one who taught her how to be a warlord. She described herself as "young" when she met the Israelites, which also fits in with Petracles' saying they were young at the time they agreed to marry.

THE PRODIGAL (E18) -- Part 2
Gabs persists in looking for solutions, taking Lila along to hunt clues Xena taught her about ambushes, tracking and such. Lila doesn't initially appreciate this sisterly time together. "Tell me, Gab, is there anything Xena doesn't know, or should we build her a temple right now?" She accuses Gabrielle of choosing the WP over her, professing, "I don't blame you. Next to Xena, I must seem pretty dull. I don't even know what a 'coverage tree' is." A dumb-founded Gabs says, "I thought you were happy I was getting out to see the world." Lila admits she was, until she realized it meant leaving her, not visiting or writing like "you forgot I existed." Gabs insists she never forgot, that nobody could replace her as sister, that their connection is something "you either have or you don't. Xena can't teach me that. I already have it." Moreover, "In fact, you're the reason I came home -- for good." Hmm, not entirely accurate maybe, but makes Lila feel better.
Gabs knows from experience when and how to soothe her green tagalong's concerns about solo rescuing the kidnapped Meleager: "The important thing is to safeguard the village, right? The people would panic if they knew Meleager was missing. You have to stay and make sure they don't find out. Will you do that?" (Sound familiar?) Back at the village, Lila now intently notes what Gabs says and does to deal creatively with makeshift defenders and weapons, throwing herself into following her sister's instructions. Gabs in turn acknowledges, "I watched you yesterday.... I saw a competent, caring woman. You weren't the little girl you were when I left here."
When Gabs encourages a sobered Meleager, "Look, the town needs a warrior," he likewise encourages her with, "The town has a warrior." He disappears, indeed creating a panicked Pharis, who urges surrendering because "Meleager's the key to our whole defense. Without a warrior, we're dead." Mouse-turned-temporary-sidekick Lila staunchly declares, "But, we have a warrior. Gabrielle can lead us," to the surprise of Pharis, Gabs and those discounting Gabs as an "outsider." Undeterred, Lila orders everyone to shut up and presents a rousing pep talk about "who better than a student of Xena's? ... I'm no hero, believe me. But, the way I see it, we have two choices: We either take a stand and possibly die. Or, we surrender, and die for sure. It's time to stop talking and start fighting! Isn't that right, Gabrielle? Isn't that what Xena taught you?" She proudly concludes, "This is Gabrielle -- my sister! This is her village! And if you people were smart, you'd realize that Xena has taught her more about the warrior arts than you'll ever know about anything!" You go, girl!
The villagers effectively employ Gabs' phase 1 defense strategies. With "act don't react" reminder from Gabs, a rejuvenated Meleager returns to ensure victory. Gabs has gotten to share with Lila what she learned from the WP about "when to fight, when to talk," "how to know the difference between a friend and an enemy," "what it means to have a best friend." Gabs leaves and reunites with the WP, re-encountering and staff vaulting the bandits' cart that started everything. She agrees with Xena, "That was gutsy, huh? I didn't freeze." For me, the real closer was her parting chat with Lila, who hands Gabs her carry bag, essentially giving her blessing for her sister's departure. "It doesn't take an oracle to realize that you belong out there in the world with Xena, helping to change people's lives for the better -- like you did here" -- with and including her younger sister.
AuntyEmfromOz@reddit
It's easy to understand how Lila feels, remembering that, in theory, she was probably only about 15 when Gabrielle left (I'm giving a little leeway here for those who think Gabrielle was 16 or 17 when she left, whereas I'm a firm believer she was 18 at the time). And it hasn't been a year yet since Xena came into their lives.
Not only is it great that Lila eventually realises how competent Gabrielle has become, how she's changed, and accepts her choices, but Meleager also learns to recognise her abilities. She might still look like a farm girl (though not so much she's now wearing Amazon attire), but she's already shown a lot of growth herself.
I particularly like the comment Gabrielle makes about not being the only oracle in the family - something die-hard Xenites would know was in an early script of SOTP where Gabrielle says she has the gift of prophecy. The only time we see this, though, is much later in One Against an Army, where a delirious Gabrielle basically quotes what was in that original script.

Honestly? I used to skip PRODIGAL during many of my rewatches. I didn't see it as part of Xena's story. Now that I'm focusing on Gabs, I'm appreciating the glimpses into HER story. It's actually more in depth than what we saw with Lyceus, Toris or even Cyrene.

THE PRODIGAL (E18) -- Part 1
Sorry, but I have a long-time nit to get out of the way first. Gabs recognizes the danger from the bandits' cart and drops down like she should. Xena secondarily sees the problem and pulls Gabs up. THEN Gabs freezes, forcing Xena to trip her back to the ground. Mind you, I love the WP, but to me, she's who erred, possibly making Gabs' question herself for no reason I can see. Xena consoles her with "maybe you're burnt out. It happens," advising, "Act don't react. Go with your gut." Hellooo. That's exactly what she did! I accept TPTB needed an excuse for Gabs to lose confidence and go home, but that was a particularly pitiful head scratcher. Still, I buy Gabs' truly fearing any bad judgement may get Xena killed, now that both of them expect the bard to pull her weight in fights. I see her thinking more as a warrior in that moment -- a "liability" in that context -- more worried about her partner's physical survival than Xena's feelings or willingness to take that risk.
Gabs goes on to perform well in two more new roles, one being the spark -- like Xena -- to convince her kinfolk not to bow down to warlords. But the other stood out more to me, as the role she abandoned when she hot-footed it away from Poteidaia -- being a big sister. She becomes Lila's Xena. We watch Lila mature under her tutelage, to the point where the younger sibling becomes a fierce defender for the older one and finally achieves the respectful relationship between them that she needed.
Gabrielle's reception at her unexpected return home is about as cold as Xena's was in SOTP. Lila greets her sister with resentment and obvious jealousy of Xena. She informs Gabs that Damon's gang has "been hitting us for food and supplies every few months since you left.... I don't suppose you've brought the woman wonder with you." Villager-in-charge Pharis argues, "Who cares? We don't need Xena to save us. We've hired a warrior of our own -- Meleager the Mighty."
Though Gabs doesn't see herself as "the one" or immediately take charge, in battle mode she thinks and behaves much like the WP. She's neither charitable about Meleager's flaws nor particularly understanding of Lila's snarkiness. She scoffs at Lila's urging her to do something about the drunken, seemingly undependable savior the town hired. "Xena would never act like this. It shows a total lack of respect -- not just for us, but himself. And one thing a fighter can't afford to lose is self-respect." Lila counters, "Well, if Xena's so perfect, I'm surprised you can stand to be around simple people like us -- You know, your family." Gabs, getting a clue about the source of Lila's negativity, suggests they talk. "Talk? We haven't talked for months. Why start now?" Lila later directs another snide remark to Gabrielle about getting a meat skewer. "It's not much of a weapon, but at least I can rely on it." Ouch.
Gabs doesn't allow emotions to distract from the impending confrontation with warlords. She remains thick-skinned to barbs from Lila, villagers scornful of her abilities and even Meleager. "What do you know," he questions during her hard-nosed assessment of him as a "worthless drunk" who's lost his nerve. "A farm girl like you? How could you begin to understand the kind of work I do or how I live my life?" He lists all the gore and dangers, including, "when you might freeze." Unimpressed, Gabs discounts him as useless and suggests getting the villagers to band together. Lila still thinks, "Without a warrior, no one's got the nerve."

Right up there with you in relation to the setup (as Feesh8 has also mentioned) - you said exactly what I thought - Gabrielle was already lying on the ground and Xena pulled her up. Huh!?! Made no sense.
I'd totally missed Meleager's comment about freezing up though.
As the bandits said, she was caught between a rock and a hard place - both in the canyon (physically), and back in Poteidaia where she didn't fit in with her kinfolk anymore, yet Meleager didn't see her as a warrior either. Well, she certainly proved something to them didn't she?
IseQween@reddit
It wasn't until this time around that I thought Xena seemed to notice the cart after Gabs, so maybe that's why she reacted as she did. Still, a more sensible reaction would've been, "Cart's coming. Gabs is on the ground. Oy, I'd better join her." Since Xenastaff left it as is, I had to blame Xena's obtuseness for Gabs' freezing or worrying it resulting from "burn out."
Pop_Stensbold@reddit
The Prodigal for me the best of that trio - great solo Gabby story and i love Tim Thomerson as Meleager.

Meleager was great! I enjoy the relationship he forms with Gabrielle and that we end up seeing him again.

MORTAL BELOVED (E16)
So ... in the beginning (okay, for decades) I focused on Xena -- her action, adventures, quest. I frankly paid scant attention to her various dalliances. Now that I'm following Gabs, I'm more alert to relationships. For one, I've really noticed how much S1 so far has dabbled in showing our girls as "traditional" in hobnobbing with redshirts, yet doomed to fail. "See, we would/could be your typical girl next door, except for bad luck." And it's not just Gabs. She learns that, like herself, her fiercely independent mentor was betrothed when young; at Princess Diana's nuptials, sees what Xena might look like in a wedding gown; glimpses the WP's nostalgic glance at the "wife with children" tableau she's leaving behind in CHARIOTS; learns the WP had history with both Herc and Iolaus; messes around a little with one of Xena's exes (Petracles) and now meets another in the briefly resurrected Marcus. In this ep, the villain specializes in chopping up brides-to-be. "You aren't about to be married, are you?" he hopefully asks when he encounters Gabs. (Yes, I'm aware cultural "norms" influenced the boy-meets-girl scenarios, but was surprised by the pattern of XWP's subtle sabotage.)
In MB, Gabs seems to be taking a little break from her previous insta development as the WP's staff-wielding partner. We begin with a young woman warning of her "horrible" encounter with a ghost. Xena of course declares, "I'll go take a look." She instructs Gabs, "You stay here." Gabs uncharacteristically responds, "No problem. It's all right." She's less accepting when she finds out the apparition, Marcus, needs Xena to visit the Underworld via a very deep lake. Gabs reasonably cautions, "You shouldn't be doing this," citing air supply and such. Xena shrugs it off with the logic that she'll make it there whether she survives or not, that "the man I love has asked for my help to save good souls. I have to try." Gabs relents and watches Xena dive in -- fearing, as in PROMETHEUS, it may be a suicide mission.
The bard bloodies the villain's nose in her brief action moment. This actually highlighted even more the significance in her still, quiet vigilance camped out at the lake, waiting for Xena's return, uncertain -- as she is about the WP -- what mysteries, dangers or trials may lay beneath the surface. Someone who exhibits the loyalty, commitment and patience, no matter what, that most folks would cherish in their lives. (Reminded me of Xena plunging into the unknown to rescue Gabs in E2 DREAMWORKER, after traveling together only about a month, according to AuntyEm's timeline.)
Xena indeed emerges successful, though at a price -- Marcus is dead again but in the Elysian Fields rather than Tartarus. Gabs hugs her, optimistically predicting, "You'll be together again one day" (assuming the WP somehow earns redemption). Xena tearfully pounds her heart, declaring "We'll never be apart. He's in here forever." You may recall she did something similar at his funeral, when she called him "my friend." That took me back to the last word spoken in the premier ep -- "friend," which Gabs here personifies as the highest, most all-encompassing form of love underlying XWP.
AuntyEmfromOz@reddit
I wonder how long Gabrielle would have waited by the lake for Xena to return? She was less patient in Chariots of War and this would have been more scary. It reminded me of her words to Xena in Path Not Taken where she said to Xena, "You're terrible at reassurance - did anyone ever tell you that?" and of course, Prometheus - the not knowing. This makes Gabby going off to the Academy even more interesting - it's okay for her to pull out of their 'friendship' for several years, but not for Xena to leave. Which of course is also interesting when you consider what's coming up in The Prodigal.
IseQween@reddit
But see, Xena already knows where she's been. Gabs hasn't been to many memorable places yet, let alone knows where she's going. Plus, she's gone off to learn about herself, not for dangerous, possible suicide missions. Maybe because I'm a Xena girl, I've always given Gabs a pass to do her thing. Xena would miss her but can't exactly be hypocritical enough to make Gabs feel guilty about what Xena does all the time -- go where she needs to. I also don't think Gabs sees herself pulling out of the friendship, no matter how long she's gone or even marrying Perdicas, that they'd keep in contact with each other. Maybe a bit naive, unrealistic, but she's young, with years and many possibilities ahead. Unlike Xena, who's an "old" 20-something believing her "future" is already determined by her past and could end any minute.
AuntyEmfromOz@reddit
Did Gabrielle go off to learn about herself or did she see an opportunity to go off with an exciting beautiful female warrior to escape her mundane existence in the village? You are correct, though, in Gabrielle being naive, believing they would be BFFs regardless. If only she knew then the impact they would have on each other's lives!
IseQween@reddit
I see Gabs' long-standing goal as learning about herself and the world, that she saw Xena as the rather irresistible way to accomplish that.
AuntyEmfromOz@reddit
Irresistible's the word! I liked the series initially because of Xena, though with maturity I've come to appreciate Gabrielle in many more ways. Gotta say, she was gutsy, going off with someone who had a reputation of being a ruthless, murdering warrior - I'm sure it couldn't have been the long legs, short leather skirt and piercing blue eyes that caught her attention......
IseQween@reddit
LOL! The bard was no dummy. I wasn't sure about Xena at first, "though with maturity I've come to appreciate Gabrielle in many more ways" and acknowledge the ex-warlord was no dummy either in letting the "gutsy" village girl through her defenses.

ROYAL COUPLE OF THEIVES (E17)
Not much to report. Our bard continues her mini-vacation in this third-in-a-row Gabs-lite ep. Her main assistance before the mission is helping choose wardrobes for Xena and Autolycus, plus using her knowledge of current events to provide for Auto a fairly detailed background on the dangerous man he'll be impersonating -- Lord Sinteres. She then discretely disappears during the mission, apparently for a clandestine "don't need to know" role. As events almost conclude, she's indeed a mystery figure, literally shrouded, dropped into the scene by Lord Sinteres. We have to assume she got to the island by stowing away on the host's boat, securing another ride, maybe being a really strong swimmer.
Unfortunately, she's slipped back into bad habits during her extra down time, like getting caught (twice) and painful introduction to Sinteres' pressure points (an upgrade from the customary knife at throat, which, yes, she also endures). The characteristically verbose bard explains why she wasn't wherever she was supposed to be, carrying out whatever she was supposed to be doing, because of some unexpected wrinkle in her secret marching orders thusly: "Xena, I'm sorry. I had to do something." 😂
Perhaps sensing Gabs isn't up to par (compounded by a bad headache from Sinteres' jabs), Xena goes into remedial mode. "Arkel said that he was going to round up the villagers. We need to know where he's taking 'em. Gabrielle, follow them and mark the trail." G: "What about the two of you?" X: "Don't worry about us; just be careful."
Gabs gets captured too, but the markers she left must've worked. Xena finds the cave with the bad guys and captives, engages in a finger-jab duel with Senteres. We hear, but don't see, Gabs cheering, evidently having gone incognito again until after the WP wins. Reappearing, she yells her customary "Everybody out!" and does a bit of butt-kicking.
Lackluster participation notwithstanding, the wily bard does manage one memorable feat -- pilfering an expensive ring from the King of Thieves himself! Rain-on-parade Xena reminds her the sacred tablets they saved commanded, "Thou shalt not steal." Unfazed, like maybe she's getting her groove back, Gabs promises to return it, "as soon as I find the owner," who just happens to be an unspecified princess Auto pilfered it from. Methinks she's been saving her energies because she's heard the next ep is Gabs heavy.
AuntyEmfromOz@reddit
Hadn't thought what Gabrielle was supposed to be doing. Maybe she went off to keep an eye on the real Sinteres, and that's how he caught her and he bought her to wherever they were going to test the weapon. I loved her smarminess about the 'diamond' that Autolycus had stolen, and her cheekiness in stealing the ring. Our little Gabrielle is full of surprises isn't she? I remember her planning to break Xena out of prison in The Reckoning. Not your regular MIss goody-two-shoes by any means...though she looks the part.
EBJ1990@reddit
It's nice to see Marcus again in Mortal Beloved, I appreciate that he was inspired by Xena to do the right thing and try to get her help to fix everything going on in the underworld.
