Can a company withhold pay?

Soooo. Started a new job and I understand I started 1 day after the payroll run. So I expect my next pay check to be 6 weeks pay.... I've been told by another employee...Naaa. I'll never get that 2 weeks until I leave. This doesn't seem right to me. Basically it's this. I've worked 6 weeks, you pay me for thise six weeks. I could be there 10 years, I don't expect to wait 10 years to get 3 weeks owed. Thoughts and also how do I word it to basically say 'Pay me my money, I've worked the shifts, I'm owed the moneyz' Thanks

Talk to payroll for clarity and ask them for an advance of say, 2 weeks. Might work. If you don't ask, you won't get.

That's a very old fashioned thing called 'lying on'. No one really does that anymore as far as I'm aware. It's relic of running an entire payroll on paper before computers became widespread.

I've recently started a new job. Pay day is 25th. I started 18/03, on 25/04 I got paid for April and what I'd worked in March. Speak with HR/accounts, better to just nip it in the bud and get confirmation.

It might be that both you and your coworker don't understand your company's pay schedule. You're probably paid 2 weeks behind. This is pretty common with shift work.

So, I’m sure others will correct me if I’m wrong, but where I work now (management in charge of payroll) and every other place I’ve been it’s worked like this…. Let’s say you start work on the 10th. Payroll cut off for that company is the 22nd. Pay day is the 28th. For the first payment I’d expect to receive/pay out for any shifts worked between the 10th and the 22nd on the 28th. Then, the next month you’d receive payment for any shifts worked between 23rd (day after previous payroll cut off) and the next payroll cut off, let’s say 25th as an example. As you joined 1 day after payroll run I’d expect your first payment to be for all shifts worked between your start date and the next payroll cut off. So an average of 4 weeks. Payroll cut off in my company is usually around the 25th as this gives the accountants time to make sure everything is set for payment on the 1st. But, I have seen this as early as the 14th due to bank holidays. Basically, your pay is payroll cut off to payroll cut off. Not pay day to pay day. Hope that makes sense?

If I've understood it correctly, and you're paid monthly (?) then you'll get the first month you've worked in your first wage, and the additional 2 weeks will go towards the second month. But either way, you'll be paid appropriately depending on the frequency of pay. Every hour you've worked will fall into one of their payment boundaries. Nothing to worry about.

Then my guess is your company has a policy of working a period of time in advance which would have been in your contract, it was incredibly common when I was younger but less so these days. So if that's the case then they're correct, to the extent that you worked a period in advance (was typically a month in my day) and will get an extra pay packet at the end after you've left, which when you move on could mean 2 pay packets at once including the one from your next employer.

It all depends on the terms of your contact, personally I'm paid fortnightly, with one fortnight in hand meaning I didn't get anything for the first 2 weeks of my employment but will eventually get it as the timesheet runs. So if I left tomorrow, I'd still be paid the 2 weeks at the end.
