Not as big of a sport in the US as football or baseball but still.
Aezetyr@reddit
My favorite sport to watch. It's fast, takes exceptional development talent skill, and has (mostly) restrained violence. NHL playoff hockey is some of the best sports you'll ever watch and I don't care if you've never seen a game.
beavertwp@reddit
Love it. Favorite sport to watch in person. Is very popular where I live in northern MN.
Covin0il@reddit
Does Minnesota really live up to the reputation of being THE state of hockey?
SouthernStatement832@reddit
Minnesota is to hockey what Indiana is to basketball and Texas to football.
nasadowsk@reddit
And finally, at 5:50 am, on the East Coast, the video finally made sense in my mind...
MM_in_MN@reddit
Yes. I know several pro players. Many on pro teams grew up here, or came to school here, just because of hockey.
Hockey is big, especially the boys HS hockey tournament. Easily sells out the pro arena, and then some. Little kid leagues, adult leagues, men, women, college, pros.. you name it, there is a crowd at games.
Ice time is in high demand wherever there is a rink. In Blaine, they built the Super Rink, which was 4 sheets originally at the sports center, then they built another and it’s still hard to book time. And thats just 1 of several rinks around Minneapolis.
beavertwp@reddit
Yes. We have a youth hockey system that is unlike any other state in the US. Hockey is the highest attended high school state tournament. Despite being a smaller populated state MN puts out the most NHL talent by a wide margin, and if MN was an independent country it would be roughly tied with Finland for second in NHL players per capita.
LunaD0g273@reddit
Wasn't that into it. Then i started watching Shoresy...

HorrorAlarming1163@reddit
It’s a great sport, but it’s too expensive to play for it to ever become as big as the other big sports in the US
Ok-Detective3142@reddit
Is it really significantly more expensive than football? It seems like they have roughly the same equipment requirements, but skates cost more than cleats.
SouthernStatement832@reddit
Having played football, and now getting into hockey as an adult, yes. Gear on the cheapest end can be well over $500. I went mostly used and still came close to $1000.
Most schools in the US don't have hockey teams you can try out for and get all your gear from them like with football, baseball, or basketball. It's almost all financed by the players/families.
Turbowookie79@reddit
I’ve time. As opposed to a football field at damn near every high school.
Hour_Insurance_7795@reddit
You don't even need a high school. Any flat surface will do to play football.
El_Bean69@reddit
Heck barely needs to be flat lol
Plus_Childhood_6381@reddit
Barely even needs to be a surface
kartoffel_engr@reddit
Ideally a football field shouldn’t be truly flat. They have a crown in the middle to direct water to the sidelines.
Coach would always tell us to “run downhill”.
arrre_yooouu_meeeeee@reddit

Nawnp@reddit
Lower budget schools cerianly do just put up 2 end goals and call it a school.
nippleflick1@reddit
Played in the street in front of our houses (city streets) telephone pole to telephone pole, only need a total of 4 - 2 on each side. The equipment was a football.
Yankee_chef_nen@reddit
Heck when I was 16 a bunch of my schoolmates and I played football on a field of frozen mud, November in Maine, it was far from flat. It was supposed to be two hand touch as we were still in our school uniforms but it quickly became full contact. The game ended with a broken nose, mine, two concussions, and a fractured orbital bone.
WorkingItOutSomeday@reddit
And you only need a ball to get started.
Hope non-Americans reading this understand that most football is played without pads and goal posts.
Sparkle_Rott@reddit
I had a guy in my carpool who coached ice hockey for kids.
Every weekend he’d either have to drive to New England, the upper Midwest, or Canada just to get matches.
curry_man56@reddit
football is pretty easy to play, just need a ball by itself, since most likely you aren’t gonna be doing NFL tackles, if you even tackle
Usually if you are playing tackle football you play with your school which gives you all your gear already
hotbunz21@reddit
Yes not even close. By far the most expensive team sport.
bradlap@reddit
Yes. Ice costs $400 per hour. Equipment for a seven year old can set you back $500. A house league here costs around $700 per season. Competitive travel might be $1,500 minimum. Then you have tournament fees you might pay, team fees for jerseys, etc.
The only sport more expensive than hockey is kart racing.
yodellingllama_@reddit
Polo is probably more expensive than ice hockey. Horses ain't cheap. Water polo even moreso, because replacements for the drowned horses aren't cheap either.
daedalus14x@reddit
You also have to factor in the time cost of the under-water-basket-weaving to entertain the seahorses.
Guy2700@reddit
Yes. It is more expensive to rent land, pay for a building, and pay the utilities to keep the ice frozen 24/7 than mow a plot of grass 2-4 times a month
Hour_Insurance_7795@reddit
You can go outside and play football right now if you find some buddies and a flat surface, Any time of year. And you can play without any equipment whatsoever as long as you have a ball
The same cannot be said for ice hockey. There isn't an ice rink or frozen surface available at any time for playing, and you can't just throw on some tennis shoes and and go out there and start playing in 5 minutes like you can other sports like basketball, football, soccer, etc.
Impressive_Ad8715@reddit
Grew up in Wisconsin playing hockey, for about half the year you can just go out and play pond hockey whenever you want… and in the off-season you can still practice shooting and stick handling if you’ve got a plastic sheet to shoot off of and a wooden ball to practice stick handling. But yeah, hockey does cost most than other sports mainly because schools don’t supply you the equipment like they do for football. To be fair though, that’s pretty much a football only thing to supply all the padding and equipment.
Hour_Insurance_7795@reddit
I grew up in Southern California and I didn’t know one person who played pond hockey. Football, basketball, and baseball were much more popular backyard sports for whatever reason .
Impressive_Ad8715@reddit
I don’t mean for this to come off in the wrong way but… isn’t that obvious? Haha. It doesn’t get cold enough in Southern California or Georgia for lakes to freeze over, so how could you play pond hockey? Here, lakes are frozen over for about 4 months (I exaggerated and said half the year), so you can just go out to a lake with your buddies and play hockey whenever you want. We did it when I was a kid.
But yeah, hockey is definitely much more popular regionally in the upper Midwest and the northeast than it is in the southern US.
Hour_Insurance_7795@reddit
Not being mean at all. That's the exact point I am making. :)
Hockey is not as popular as the "Big 3" in the United States precisely because a good portion of the country (like me) rarely sees snow, much less ice. It's much much MUCH easier for kids south of the Mason Dixon line to go outside and play pickup football, basketball, etc. than it is ice hockey. Therefore, a good portion of the US grows up not playing ice hockety at all. It simply doesn't exist in the south and western part of the country in the wild like the other sports do.
Problem is, this being Reddit, somebody will read this post, read where I bolded "south of the Mason Dixon line".....and then respond anyways "dude, we play pond hockey all the time in Minnesota...it's an extremely popular sport in this country!" lol
Impressive_Ad8715@reddit
Ok so I guess we agree for the most part? My original response was just to say that in the areas where hockey is popular, you actually can just go out and play whenever you want in a way comparable to kids going out and playing pickup football.
Hour_Insurance_7795@reddit
Correct. Which is why in places like Canada and Minnesota hockey is far more popular than basketball, baseball, etc. It's all about environment.
Some people were talking as most Americans just shunned the sport and disliked it as compared to the Big 3. Not so. Most Americans simply aren't exposed to it on a daily basis in their environment
Fun_Wear7022@reddit
And wish your kid doesn’t want to be a goalie, that is extensive.
Lithl@reddit
I've got triplet cousins who played ice hockey in school. One of them was goalie, too.
I don't know how my aunt and uncle did it. They also completed the adoption process for a fourth kid a few months before my aunt learned she was pregnant.
QuarterNote44@reddit
Plus, you can teach a 15-year-old genetic marvel to play O-line if he's never played before. Same goes for basketball. It's rare because there aren't that many giants around, but it happens. The same can't be said of hockey.
Th3MiteeyLambo@reddit
I played both back in the day. The difference for me was that for football, most, if not all of the required gear was supplied by the team. Whereas for hockey my parents had to buy/rent all of it themselves. No idea if that's how it is elsewhere, but that was my experience.
In addition, teams are more spread out as well, because hockey requires a large enclosed facility and tools/machines to maintain the ice, rather than a large grass field for football. So my parents had to drive me 30 minutes to the next town over for practices and games and such also there was no bus as technically I was playing for a different school.
My parents were relieved when I told them I wanted to quit hockey
NickelCitySaint@reddit
Ice time is expensive. Especially the rarer or more South you go
a1ien51@reddit
And the timeframes you can get ice time can be nuts.
thedeepfake@reddit
Football is free other than cleats and whatever swag they sell your parents in a ton of places, high schools have all the gear you need and anyone can play.
HowardIsMyOprah@reddit
The U7 practice is held at 4am in Canada I’ve heard
Southern-Ad-802@reddit
Football in Texas is free once you start playing for the school. All equipment funded by the UIL
Punky-Bruiser@reddit
Vastly more expensive
More-Sock-67@reddit
It is insanely expensive. For average equipment you’re probably going to spend $1500. Triple it if you’re a goalie.
Idk the cost of ice time anymore but it’s probably 150-200 per hour. The cost to join a team is at least 1000. Significantly more if you’re playing travel and above 10,000 if you’re playing for elite teams.
Football is basically free at most highschools and equipment can be supplied. Basically just paying for cleats and maybe a helmet. Significantly less equipment.
Senzualdip@reddit
Schools provide pads and helmets for football, all you need to supply is a cup and cleats. Hockey they don’t provide shit. Figure $100ea for cheap equipment. So skates, stick, helmet, gloves, elbow pads, chest pads, breezers, shin guards. I’m sure I’m missing a few things, but that’s $800 on stuff that a kid will outgrow every season or get worn out.
My buddy and I play beer league hockey. He just spent $800 on skates…. He also has both a set of goalie gear and forward gear, the goalie stuff he bought used for $1k.
Morgedal@reddit
And where I am in western Pennsylvania schools generally won’t provide any athletic funding the way they will for football, so the players families bear the entire cost. I think I played midget football for maybe $50 for the season, and just an in-house hockey team was $500+ before equipment costs, and that was in the 90s.
And hockey has gotten pretty big in Western Pennsylvania.
bh0@reddit
The cost is in the ice time. It's just a cost that never ends with hockey. It can be thousands (per team) to play in leagues with refs and what not. Ice doesn't maintain itself. Even with all the costs, most rinks are booked 100% of the time, with maybe an hour or two here and there for open public skate. The demand is certainly there in cold areas.
Vert354@reddit
I don't know if it's still like this, but my school, and even Pop Warner teams issued me football pads. I only paid for cleats and cup.
I'm pretty sure the local hockey league expects you to provide pads here.
HorrorAlarming1163@reddit
Most football players just have to pay a flat fee to play for the school, at least here in the south. But here you have to pay for sticks, pads, skates, ice time, all kinds of stuff. Plus, most of the hockey players I know played for a club team as well as the school team. Here in Texas at least it’s definitely a rich kid sport
Ill-Butterscotch1337@reddit
Yes. You can play football anywhere and in most seasons. Aside from cold climates, significant investment is required for hockey rinks.
oarmash@reddit
baseball is also shockingly expensive.
FullofLovingSpite@reddit
Outside of paying to be on a travel team (optional, but maybe needed these days), what are the expenses?
A glove, bat, and ball are under $200. But I'm far from any little league or youth teams, so I don't know what else goes into it.
QuarterNote44@reddit
Sorry, in competitive baseball, $200 will get you a poverty bat
FullofLovingSpite@reddit
Prices may be off for that one, because I haven't bought one in years. However, if the player is good, it doesn't matter what bat they use.
QuarterNote44@reddit
Yeah. That's true in city league. But if your goal is to get to the big leagues, the tiniest advantage matters an awful lot.
This is coming from a city league guy whose parents did not have travel ball in the budget.
FullofLovingSpite@reddit
Since you've been there, I'm curious about the weight of the travel leagues. Do they really help that much in gaining notice, as compared to just playing high school and whatever else might be available for free/cheap?
The talented ones should stand out for the MLB and college scouts no matter where they play... right? Sports are one of the only things you can't fake, so I would assume talent is going to be found no matter where it is. I would assume.
QuarterNote44@reddit
It's huge. Better competition, more games, better coaches usually, and better connections. During high school tryouts, the head coach told us to our faces that if we didn't play for X, Y, or Z travel team, he didn't know who we were and our chances of making the team were slim.
I didn't make the cut, so I focused on music and went to college on a half tuition music scholarship.
FullofLovingSpite@reddit
That's pretty shitty. It's another thing taken over by the rich and made exclusive for them. That shit doesn't help the game at all. Thanks for filling me in on the depressing reality. Bummer.
QuarterNote44@reddit
Yep. Competitive baseball in the US is a rich kid's sport.
oarmash@reddit
the equipment is crazy - top flight bats are hundreds of dollars each. on top of that travel ball is starting as young as 6.
Hour_Insurance_7795@reddit
That's for top flight equipment. It's not expensive to play the game itself.
Millions of Latin Americans play it for practically nothing on a day by day basis. The major leagues are full of Dominicans, Venezuelans, Cubans, etc. I can assure you they did not grow up in wealth playing the game.
You will not, however, find a bunch of impoverished youth playing ice hockey.
oarmash@reddit
You will in Minnesota - pond hockey requires skates, sticks and a puck
Hour_Insurance_7795@reddit
How about Texas, Florida, California?
You can play backyard football, basketball, etc. in both places. Can you play backyard ice hockey in both places?
oarmash@reddit
Roller hockey or floor hockey can be played. Hockey is a regional sport for sure, but it can be played without renting a rink.
Hour_Insurance_7795@reddit
The OP post is specifically about ice hockey.
oarmash@reddit
Even in Canada, people who are fans of ice hockey play roller hockey in the summer. This wasn’t a post about playing ice hockey.
Hour_Insurance_7795@reddit
The OP asks "What do you think of ice hockey?"
oarmash@reddit
Right. So how did you get from there to playing it? It can easily be watched at home and replicated.
Hour_Insurance_7795@reddit
He asked why ice hockey isn't "as big of a sport in the US as football or baseball"
oarmash@reddit
That’s not what he asked - the line you quoted was just a comment/observation. Reread the post. OP was asking what Americans think of the sport. Not if they play it. Not if it’s popular across the country. Just what individual Americans think.
Hour_Insurance_7795@reddit
So what do you propose we do to resolve this important issue?
oarmash@reddit

oarmash@reddit

Th3R4zzb3rry@reddit
Except, in Canada it is just Hockey :) While technically “Ice Hockey” we just call it hockey. All other types of hockey would have a prefix for disambiguation, such as: street hockey, ball hockey, floor hockey, roller hockey, field hockey, etc.
I barely see it anymore, but my generation was straight up Wayne’s World with street hockey. “Car! Car! Move net. Vroom vroom! Return net. Game on! Game on!”
It was also very common for parents to work “Bingo” nights to earn money to pay for kids “ice” hockey.
For those of us even poorer kids, street hockey in the neighborhood, and floor hockey at school, and once in a while playing on the community rink during free events, or sneaking on the ice after hours, or trying your luck on the pond/lake!
Yankee_chef_nen@reddit
You’ll find that in Maine too. At least you did in the 80s when I was playing on ponds.
weredragon357@reddit
Hell, we did pond hockey in South Jersey when I was a kid. My brother had a homemade rink in his backyard for three weeks last winter.
funguy07@reddit
No they just get signed to youth “academies” that fund their playing in exchange for signing with the MLB club that invested in them and gets cheap wages until they can be free agents.
Someone is paying for them to play.
Hour_Insurance_7795@reddit
I am from Venezuela, my man. Born and raised there.
We played for free. Not all of us were major leagues. 8-year-old Cuban kids are not rich jaja. You act like every single kid in Latin America got paid to play baseball as a kid. lol 98% of kids who play baseball in Latin America are not professionals.
It's an extremely popular sport with many poor Latin American countries who play it religiously (Venezuela, Cuba, Dominican Republic, etc.,). We played with no money whatsoever. Still do.
funguy07@reddit
I think you misunderstood. I’m saying MLB teams have been setting up academies and subsiding youth baseball so kids don’t have to pay. Instead they sign their rights to that organization as international free agents.
Carlos Gonzales played for my favorite MLB team and he grew up in the Venezuela youth baseball system.
How much did MLb and Little league invest in Baseball in Venezuela 20-30 years ago?
facforlife@reddit
A hockey stick is easily $100 and I won't say they're easily broken but it's not rare for them to break that's for sure.
Skates are hundreds for a decent pair and given they're for your feet you definitely do not want to go too loose or too tight like you could for something else like shoulder pads. For a kid that means buying a new pair every year or two.
That's just 2 pieces. Shin guards, gloves, pants, shoulder pads, elbow pads, helmet.
You can get it all used I guess but even still you'd be spending $300 bare minimum for a full set of decent stuff.
Green-Ad-6149@reddit
Totally worth it because my son is going to the majors. I’m 5’8” but my uncle was 6’2”, so there’s a good chance he got those genes. If not, I heard there are limb lengthening surgeries we can consider, but that will depend on whether or not it affects his 40m time. I’ve got my son training with a former Triple A D1 starter from Duquesne and he says my boy has a natural form and great hands for a 12 year old, whatever that means. So anyway, I see it as a good investment
FullofLovingSpite@reddit
Thanks for the response. So it's just the extra "special" stuff that creates the cost?
Like the other person said, many of the pros didn't grow up with it, so it's good to know it's only the items that make a less skilled player look better than any actual needed items. The separation in youth sports is crazy, but at least the talent still has a good chance of rising to the top.
gangofone978@reddit
Equipment has become RIDICULOUSLY expensive
funguy07@reddit
Private hitting coaches, private pitching coaches, winter batting cage time, multiple bats, cleats, gloves. Private maintained fields. I was shocked to find out how much money my coworker was spending on travel baseball.
FullofLovingSpite@reddit
That's just travel team stuff, though, right? All that private coaching is pretty wild to me. I have a friend who is a private coach. I don't think he thinks it's as important as talent, but I do know that he thinks the parents can be crazy sometimes. They push the kids more than anyone... at least that's my understanding from the few times we talked about it.
AdEastern9303@reddit
Every parent I’ve ever known with kids that play baseball think that their kid is gonna get a free ride to college and go pro someday. In reality, most get drivers licenses and discover girls in high school and that’s the end of baseball.
BuildNuyTheUrbanGuy@reddit
I thought it was the ball turning into a grain of rice?
funguy07@reddit
I think that permeates way further into little league than anyone is prepared to admit.
Ctmarlin@reddit
If you play travel ball yes. If you play rec then it’s pretty darn affordable. Cleats, glove and bat. Nothing needs to be super high end.
Rrrrandle@reddit
This is the difference. There's no option for playing hockey that isn't expensive.
Yankee_chef_nen@reddit
I don’t know how it is now but when I was a kid, admittedly a long time ago, my skates came from a yard sale down the street, puck and stick came from Kmart and the rink was the pond. Of course that was just neighborhood pickup games I’m sure youth leagues were out of my family’s budget.
Now that I type it out I see that my experience doesn’t contradict your post.
Rrrrandle@reddit
Yep. I wore my dad's old gear from the 60s and played with friends on ponds, but there was no chance my parents were going to pay for any organized play.
frodosbitch@reddit
tie a couple of t-shirts together and you got yourself a soccer match.
shadratchet@reddit
I would love to see a roller hockey comeback. I was able to play roller at 5 years old with a pretty small barrier to entry. Once it was clear that I was invested in the sport (and when my parents had more money), my dad switched me to ice.
letsgobrewers2011@reddit
Seriously! It’s nuts. $55 just to register, $1000 in ice time, $250 for uniforms, $300 in gear/yr. And this is for my 7 year old. We belong to the poor club.
Usuf3690@reddit
There was an article many years ago about how the quality of Czech and Slovak ice hockey programs had declined since their governments stopped subsidizing the sport like during Communism. It is indeed an expensive sport to play, and quite frankly harder to play.
Usuf3690@reddit
It's expensive to play because unlike other sports they're usually not subsidized by schools (not even most colleges) Players are on the hook for their own equipment and pitching in for ice time.

I'm from Buffalo, myself. We used to have a profession team here.
oarmash@reddit
It's a regional sport here - very popular in New England, upper midwest, upstate New York, and is growing in certain markets where there is an NHL team (Florida, Nashville, Bay Area etc) but is definitely a tier 2 sport well behind Football and basketball.
I like it because I grew up in Michigan, but many don't follow it.
qban2010@reddit

To a lesser extent, it’s decently popular in the mountain states. Colorado, Montana, Alaska, etc. Utah was already decent but the Mammoth will drastically boost them

fuzzau36@reddit
Underated. As a fan, it is the most exciting major sport to watch. Most difficult major trophy to win and fast action and something always happening to keep you watching but enough breaks to let you get food or go to the bathroom.
As a player, also underated. Hockey works my body in ways I didn't know were possible and injury is really low unless you have a misfortunate fall. Very low impact in general on your body and doesnt wear out your knees like running.
Biggest downsides are cost in both. Fans suffer from North America's obsession of making money on events and treating them like a show to be entertained instead of sports outside the US where fans entertain themselves. The jumbotron is a literal cheerleader lol. While as a player yes, equipment is expensive but it lasts years. The main cost is ice time, but many rinks are subsidized by local governments

I can't watch it without getting heart palpatations. Doesn't even matter who's playing.
Alpha_Mad_Dog@reddit
American football is the #1 sport in terms of popularity here in the US. And the #1 reason is the physicality. The hard hits and tackles. But Ice hockey is just as physical if not more so. And they don't take a break between every play, so there's more action. I love both sports. But I have never got how ice hockey isn't more popular here in America.

2nd fave professional American sport.
Ok-Jellyfish2013@reddit
Second favorite behind football. Most exciting to watch live and the NHL playoffs are the best of any sport.
It is expensive to play, particularly because ice time is so pricey. And oddly, most of the best teams are from the south (at least over the last 20 years or so). I've come to terms that it's a good thing, as it brings the sport to places where kids might get more interested in it.
I've noticed some great hockey players coming from southern states over the past 20 years.

As a Minnesotan, I have 5 kids and they all play hockey. Even the kids who don’t play organized hockey in our neighborhood can and do skate on ponds or the ODR in the winter and usually play street hockey in the summer.
Minnesota is a breeding ground for professional players because it’s literally everywhere around us. Even in the most remote and desolate areas of Minnesota, there is an outdoor rink within 45 mins. In the cities, you easily have one every 10 mins away.
Hockey is expensive but nothing near what it costs outside Minnesota due to its community model which keeps costs way down. We know families in Colorado that pay 15k per season. Here in Minnesota, it’s $1800 or less for most bantam level teams. It’s even less when you get to high school at around $500 or less.
Of course you can spend more here doing extra ice, the opportunities are endless, if you got money, you’ll have amazing ex NHLers at your finger tips with a ton of experience and knowledge to pass on.
So yeah, in Minnesota, is a big deal…

Tampa did not win last year. The Florida Panthers won in 2024 and 2025 (a couple weeks ago).

But it is pretty popular in the state of Florida because of the two teams being so successful.
AlabasterPelican@reddit
Thank you for the correction. I did not realize Miami had a team until now! I get the appeal of hockey but I honestly find it hilarious that Florida, the state in the lower 48 with a tropical zone, is the one state in the deep south that has an ice hockey fandom on any scale. It makes sense though with snow birds

The Canes do well with outreach, and the Triangle is sports mad. More about college sports, but it’s a transplant market and starved for any other professional sports, so they sell out. UNC and State both have fairly competitive club hockey teams and all three major markets have a solid ECHL franchise. It’s a distant fifth as the state’s favorite, but that’s mostly logistical, not a lot of ice down here anytime, even winter, so kids have to pay through the nose for club hockey.
PrimusDCE@reddit
Yeah, they have been pretty consistently good lately, and like I said a lot of Canadians retire down in these areas and adopt the teams.
AlabasterPelican@reddit
Makes sense. We had a team in a smaller league for like 5-7 years when I was a kid. It was kinda a novelty, they'd have probably done a bit better had they put American football on ice or something. Kinda like a Harlem Globetrotters thing.
thecat627@reddit
My sport of choice. Been a St. Louis Blues fan for 10 years, but have been cheering on the teams that veteran right winger Vladimir Tarasenko has played for (since 2023 I have cheered on the Rangers, Senators, Panthers, Red Wings, and will now be cheering on the Wild 2025 and beyond). I collect hockey jerseys like they are infinity stones, I’m only 6 teams from having one jersey from every team, and for some reason I always end up at Enterprise Center watching numerous games.
Hockey is even a critical piece of one of my favorite horror movie franchises, with Jason Voorhees donning a Red Wings goalie mask in the Friday the 13th films. A hockey mask has never looked the same since 1982 thanks to one of my favorite fictional characters.

Nah man, I get there’s differences in how the games are played but they’re pretty much the same concept as far as I can see. And I just don’t find that concept to be particularly interesting.
arrre_yooouu_meeeeee@reddit

FallenEagle1187@reddit
Very broadly speaking, chase a ball/puck around a field/rink and you can only touch it with your feet/stick and you’re trying to shoot it into a large net to score a single point while a goalie tries to stop the ball/puck from going in. Team with the most goals wins. I just haven’t found most soccer or hockey games I’ve seen to be particularly exciting or interesting. It doesn’t mean that others can’t find enjoyment in it, but this is how I see it.

As an American, it’s my favorite of the major sports. I live in California in a city with a team.
Personmcpersonface93@reddit
I’m fortunate enough that I grew up playing hockey. I was raised in the Cleveland area, and it certainly has a presence in Cleveland and Columbus, but is not the top dog by any means in terms of sports following.
I think in more traditional hockey markets, where you have cold winters, it is a popular sport (Great Lakes and upper Midwest, New England, New York etc); however I have been surprised in recent years to see how many NHL players and rising junior prospects are coming out of places like Florida , Texas, Missouri, California and a few others. I suppose it likely has to do with the NHL presence in those areas sparking interest.
All that said, I do think it is becoming too expensive. It always was pretty pricey, but in the 90’s and 2000’s when I was a kid, I felt like it was kind of a blue collar sport, and that no longer seems to be the case.

yeyikes@reddit

___daddy69___@reddit
I think you’re in the minority here, while hockey certainly isn’t on the level of football, basketball, or baseball, it’s still a very popular sport and very culturally relevant
yeyikes@reddit
The NHL has never had a game break the Top 100 broadcasts annually, ever. Not once.
Its fandom is located in a handful of northern, cold weather cities. Not 3 in 100 people polled on the streets could tell you what month the Stanley Cup is played. The expansion efforts fail repeatedly (how many teams can Atlanta and Phoenix go through?), and the total revenue of the League is less than the price to buy a single NFL or MLB team.
It isn’t a matter of disrespect, it’s a matter of irrelevance for most Americans, and that mathematically doesn’t out me in the minority.
___daddy69___@reddit
Most americans definitely don’t watch hockey, but don’t act like it’s not culturally relevant. Hockey punches above its wait in media, movies like miracle and mighty ducks are some of the most popular sports movies, and don’t even get me started on all the books about hockey for some reason.
You claim you thought about something else, i’m curious what, Field hockey? You’re definitely the minority there, ask 100 Americans about hockey and every single one of them will assume it’s ice.
yeyikes@reddit
There are different kinds of hockey? Even worse.
You seem invested in it but your points are non sequiturs. Hockey could disappear tomorrow and there just aren’t a lot of people who would notice. The Stanley Cup viewership dropped by almost 50% in 2024.

BullPropaganda@reddit
I don't watch it but wish I did. I like fast sports like this but when I watch I cannot figure out who is "winning" unless a goal is scored.
I watch a lot of premier League soccer and it's pretty easy to tell who's dominating a game even when the ball isn't going in the net. I cannot wrap my head around it with hockey
Th3R4zzb3rry@reddit
I find it to be the opposite.
A 0-0 game in soccer where both teams have roughly the same possession time, it could break at any moment or absolutely nothing could happen and the game ends in a draw… There might not even be a single shot on goal! Zzzzz…
Soccer games certainly can be exciting, but I’d say that more often they are not. Meanwhile, even a random hockey game has a very high chance of being high scoring and action-packed without any investment to your local team.
As for what team is dominating: Shots on goal and time spent in the offensive zone are primary indicators, other than the scoreboard itself. Fairly similar to “football”, ball/puck possession time often is a good indicator of a team dominating the other.
Hits/Checks may a good indicator in hockey, while guys rolling around on the pitch might be an indicator in the beautiful game, of a dominating team. A dive in hockey might draw a penalty against the other team, or might draw a diving penalty instead! Diving is highly frowned upon in hockey!
Fans will cheer when soccer players pass the ball backward, where in hockey, this maneuver might draw jeers.
Ultimately, it comes down to the team that scores the most goals. Both in soccer and hockey, this might happen in the absolute last moments of the game, which can be exciting, probably far more common in hockey, and if there is a tie at the end of regulation, there is sudden death OT, and then a shootout (in regular season play.)

Woush and I remember the time the games were not all televised, we used to listen to them on the radio:)
Winter-Ad3699@reddit
It’s only terrible on TV if you don’t know how to follow the puck.
thereelkrazykarl@reddit
.. if you don't know how to follow the puck. Follow where all the players are facing
jda404@reddit
As someone not into hockey you're probably right. I love going to hockey games in person, but every time I've tried to watch hockey on TV I just get lost and then bored. But going in person being apart of the crowd and hanging out with buddies is a blast.
Same goes for baseball for me. Can't watch it on TV, but I'll gladly go to a baseball game in person. Now football and basketball I prefer the opposite. I'd rather watch those on TV than in person especially football and football is my favorite sport by far.
Winter-Ad3699@reddit
Fair enough. Try watching playoff hockey on TV. Way more intense. They play too many games in the regular season so there’s less urgency and guys take games off. No one does in the playoffs.

As a person who barely skate, I’m in awe of hockey players to be able to skate, have such stick skills while being very violent and fighting
CabinetSpider21@reddit
Very expensive sport, but way more entertaining than American football and baseball. Where my fellow northern states at?
Th3R4zzb3rry@reddit
So true, but I am biased!
Nawnp@reddit
It's a sport that should have stayed with the Canadians.
Southern states having it is beyond any belief to me, we don't even have ice skating rings, but they'll fill up an arena full of it and play games.
KaleidoscopeAlive290@reddit
It’s pretty cool to see in person

Ice football played by people with long, foreign names. A strange sport that I have only seen on TV

My favorite sport by far. I was born in Denver in ‘96 so it was very popular with the Avs being new.
Hockey is a very regional sport in the US. It’s decently popular in the mountain states and very popular in the Great Lakes as well as the northeast.
Overall, the NHL is very comfortably in 4th place in terms of league popularity. Quite a bit behind MLB but also quite a bit ahead of MLS

I can tolerate basketball on TV. But baseball? Football? 🤢
I'd rather watch golf.
I like hockey because of the speed of the game, the fluidity, and the teamwork combined with individual skill.
I know some people have trouble following the puck but for anyone who has moderate experience with hockey it's very easy to follow. You don't even need to see the puck a lot of the time, just look where all the players are facing. You can sort of guess where the puck is simply by knowing how players tend to situate themselves relative to the puck.
BHarbinson@reddit
I realize your opinion is probably the majority view, but how is hockey worse to watch on TV than baseball? I played competitive baseball (in addition to hockey) and understand the game and I still struggle to watch more than a few innings.
Flossthief@reddit
Agreed that hockey games are the best in person
But it's gotten better on TV as cameras have gotten better-- like you can actually see the puck nowadays
Safely432@reddit

Absolutely the best in person sport. It's fast, hard hitting, loud as hell, and you might get to see a fight. Plus, when the home team scores the horn is great. Only the fighting and hard hits translate over TV. The rest you need to experience in person to understand.

Most exciting sport US pro sport, IMO. So much faster and more exciting than soccer since the field is so much smaller and uh frictionless. Faster than basketball and you don't need to be nearly 7' tall or just out of college to play it well. Baseball and football are board games by comparison.

It's a great sport. My favorite sport growing up, though I never played Ice Hockey, I did play street hockey almost every day after school.
The hockey playoffs are the most exciting and competitive playoffs of all the sports, in my opinion. The Stanley Cup is probably the most iconic trophy in all of sports.
It is very expensive to play. My son started when he was 5 or 6 and played up until High School.
Not everyone can afford it so it's not as accessible as a lot of the other sports.
Free_Four_Floyd@reddit
Could not care less, honestly.
Welpe@reddit
Actively dislike it. Though admittedly as someone who spent his entire life in the Southwest and PNW, I have never once been to an ice rink in my life. I suspect it’s different if you grew up playing it, but as is I find the whole fighting part of the NHL insane, have no nostalgia for it, never played it myself, and get nothing from watching it (It’s not like horrendous to watch, but it’s the equivalent of watching rugby or another sport I don’t know or care about, it can be mildly entertaining and I will watch it for things like the Olympics, but I am not going to be glued to my seat. It’s background noise to have on while doing something else).
Bruised_up_whitebelt@reddit

I grew up in Denver in the ‘80’s. We lost our team to New Jersey. I was 11-12 years old. With no home team, kinda hard to follow hockey back then. As a Minnesotan I can confidently say my entire childhood revolved around it. Probably one of 4/5 states where that even happens? But it does pay off. No other sport demands as much humility and teamwork in my opinion.
EcstasyCalculus@reddit
It's fun to watch, but as someone who grew up in the South where hockey was nonexistent, it's always alienating watching it with my friends from up north. It's a whole culture that they grew up in and I didn't.

Outrageous_Carry8170@reddit
Great sport but limited due to ice requirements. While ice rinks and NHL teams are located in mild-Winter parts of the country, access and availability is severely limits its growth and interest.
Neb-Nose@reddit
I absolutely love it and consider it one of my favorite sports! No sport provides a better live experience than an NHL game.
I think baseball is also much better live than on television, but hockey is on a whole different level. And playoff hockey is just incredible.
I have been fortunate to experience playoff games in all four of the major North American sports and postseason hockey is definitely my favorite.
I do agree that hockey is not very popular in large swaths of our country, but as far as I’m concerned, those people are just missing out.

HustlaOfCultcha@reddit
I grew up in Upstate NY and didn't get into it until I was about 13 y/o. Then one of my friends' dad would get us ticket and train trips to Montreal to watch the Canadiens play at the old Forum. It was incredible.
Then I moved to the south to go to college and you just didn't ever hear about hockey so I lost interest. Eventually I moved to Atlanta and we would watch the Thrashers play, but the Trashers management had no idea how to build a fanbase. Phillips Arena would have a lower section and an upper section and the lower section was all corporate seating. And because they were corporate and you're in Atlanta (and the team wasn't very good), the lower level seating was bare bones. But they wouldn't let fans that were in the upper level seating sit in the empty lower level seats. At that time I never saw anything like it (I'd been to quite a few games at the old Yankee Stadium) where they would let fans go sit in the empty seats closer to the action).
It's a fun sport, but I prefer Olympic rules and Olympic sized rinks. Maybe a little better communication with the non-fans as to what teams and players are trying to do and more in-depth analysis

I live in Texas, some people who were born and raised up north follow it but it's not common.
To us native Texans, it basically doesn't exist. I've never met a native Texan who cares about it unless they married someone from up north and got into it (and that was one person I can think of). Otherwise, I can't emphasize how much it doesn't even cross our minds.
With that said, hockey is experiencing a popularity boost here on a Reddit in the last year (saying it's great is good for upvotes) so no doubt this post will get tons of comments from people "I'm a native Texan and I love hockey!". So let me clarify, I've never met a native Texan in real life who cares even a little bit about hockey.

It is fun, but it is most fun if you are tagging along with friends from up north who can explain it to you. I generally don’t pay attention unless I’m tagging along with them.
i-might-do-that@reddit
It’s my main sport of the big 4. Baseball, basketball, and football are all below the NHL if you’re asking me.
funguy07@reddit
Greatest sport in the world. Nothing beats playoff hockey.
brizia@reddit
The only sport I watch. All other sports are boring compared to it.
chriswaco@reddit
I grew up near Detroit. Huge Detroit Red Wings fan, especially during the "bruise brothers" years (1985-1991) and Stanley Cup contender years (1995-2008). I'm old enough to have seen Gordie Howe play once in person, though not for The Red Wings.
Lots of Canadians come across the border for the games - it's a 10 minute drive compared to 4 hours to get to Toronto.
DBDude@reddit
It’s awesome, more fights per dollar than watching a boxing match.
jamesonbar@reddit
Wish was more popular my favorite sport. But cost to play is way to much for average family.
TheeVande@reddit
Fucking love it!! It's one of the few things that brings my depressed ass happiness (but also supreme disappointment)
Dawashingtonian@reddit
i tried to get into it when the NHL expanded to Seattle and we got the Kraken. i didn’t know anything about it and really earnestly tried to get into it. i watched a bunch of youtube videos to better understand the sport and watched maybe 20 games from start to finish.
unfortunately i just don’t like the sport at all. of all the major sports leagues in america the NHL is definitely my least favorite. maybe if i had grown up playing or at least watching i would think differently.
Old-Pin-7839@reddit
I think if I grew up with it I’d like it. Fast paced continuous action plus occasional fights. Very entertaining! But since I grew up in the south before hockey started expanding down here, I never watched it, so I don’t really feel a need to catch up on it now.
muphasta@reddit
It was the only sport I cared about until the 2008 lock out.
I used to go up to LA or Anaheim to watch Detroit play them (I'm originally from MI).
But I've watched maybe an hours worth of NHL hockey since 2008. I do go to the local AHL team's games a couple times a year.
DCDHermes@reddit
It’s in my top two list of favorite Sports.
ForestOranges@reddit
I personally find NHL games more entertaining than MLB games, there’s more action and it’s more constant.
FiendishCurry@reddit
It's a sport. Some people play it. Some other people watch it.
Please note: I don't watch any sports. They are all like this to me.
SkullLeader@reddit
Fun sport but hard for people to learn when young - lack of frozen lakes in most of the country and ice rinks pricey to skate at and not enough of them.
Hard to watch on TV, a lot better in person.
tujelj@reddit
Have never seen a single game in my life. I know some folks who love it, but eh. I’m also not a big sports person other than baseball, which is a lifelong hyperfixation, so.
Frankennietzsche@reddit
I'm a fan, although, in Kentucky, there is no real NHL local team, so I root for whichever of the original 6 I can watch. We get a lot of Columbus and Nashville, so boooooo to that.
Rhomya@reddit
I’m Minnesotan.
Ice hockey is part of our culture.
amethystalien6@reddit
I really don’t.
DJSimmer305@reddit
I have a weird relationship with hockey. I'd say it probably doesn't crack my top three favorite sports. I don't really know any of the players and I don't really follow the NHL at all, but it is my favorite to attend in person.
Constellation-88@reddit
Meh. Never liked any sports really.
lionhearted318@reddit
It is very popular where I grew up. I feel like in NYC it's in third place in terms of popularity after baseball and basketball. I think it's too expensive to play though which is a pretty big barrier to entry for many Americans that prevents it from being as popular as it could be.
WorkerAmbitious2072@reddit
I don’t
Longjumping_Swan_631@reddit
I'm a huge fan but it is so outrageously expensive to get into.
OldRaj@reddit
I was a fan when my son played (seven years) but it cost about $20,000/year. Hotels, food, fuel, equipment and of course booze in hotel lobbies.
44035@reddit
I'm a casual fan but it's fun to watch. People here in Michigan love the sport.
Hikinghawk@reddit
I like watching it, way more engaging than baseball and OT rules that make sense unlike football. Too expensive/hard to get into as an after work hobby for most. With soccer, baseball and football all you need is a ball, a field and a couple of guys. Needing an ice rink puts it out of reach for a lot of people.
Comfortable-Tell-323@reddit
My favorite sport definitely the least popular of the big 4 and I suspect it'll get over taken by MLS at some point. It's just not a cost effective sport to get into. 90% of the US can't just go outside and play pond hockey in the winter like you can just grab some friends and have a pickup game in any of the other sports.
lithomangcc@reddit
People used to play roller hockey when I was growing up
Comfortable-Tell-323@reddit
Same here I used to play it myself along with floor hockey in PE but it's been decades since I've seen anyone playing.
oarmash@reddit
eh it's very regional - there are definitely pockets in the country where hockey is the second most popular sport, well ahead of MLS and even MLS in some markets.
ayebrade69@reddit
In NHL video games separate controls pop up to get into a fight which is awesome
DrSnidely@reddit
I love ice hockey. Best sport to watch in person.
LemonSkye@reddit
My BF is a huge fan and a former youth/college player. We don't watch the NHL games very much but are big supporters of our hometown minor league team.
Antique_Character215@reddit
Only sport I follow
JohnMichaels19@reddit
I don't understand the intricacies, but it's similar enough to the only sport I do watch (football, not the American kind) to enjoy
gratusin@reddit
It’s pretty similar but there is one big difference. When I was going in to high school I played both and had to pick one to focus on so I talked to both soccer and hockey coaches. The soccer coach said “you should tryout because it’s the most popular sport in the world.” The hockey coach said “listen son, in soccer you pretend you’re hurt to help your team, in hockey you pretend you’re not hurt to help your team.” I chose hockey and still play. It’s definitely more fun and way more challenging.
nylondragon64@reddit
It's still pretty huge. Even hot states like Florida and texas have a team. How much ice can they spare besides putting it in margrettas
tuberlord@reddit
If it's on at the bar I'll watch it, but I'll forget what happened by the time I go home. The same thing is true of basketball.
ApprehensivePie1195@reddit
It ranks 2nd after football for me.
Different_Ad7655@reddit
A nice blood sport and popular in New England especially Northern New England
Ill-Butterscotch1337@reddit
It's great I follow it closer than any other sport.
MartialBob@reddit
I don't have a problem with the sport, it just never appealed to me.
tangs-08@reddit
Eskimo/Inuit soccer
tangs-08@reddit
I almost never think about it at all. But I don’t live in Canada or Russia 🤷🏻♂️
Current_Poster@reddit
New Englander, so it's part of my Deal. :)
Dalton387@reddit
I don’t.
ivantmybord@reddit
It's the only sport I'll spend money on. You'd have to pay me to go to an MLB game and you couldn't pay me enough to go to an NFL game. I budget to go to at least 3 NHL games per season
rinky79@reddit
The best sport to watch live, and super fun to play.
Playful_Procedure991@reddit
It’s my favorite sport!
Adamon24@reddit
Not a huge fan of it compared to other sports. But it’s definitely fun to see in person
FatahRuark@reddit
It's my favorite sport. It blows my mind it's not more popular in the US. It has it all. Speed, scoring, fights. Everything your typical American likes.
I think the problem is that you have to pay attention all of the time. I think American Football is so popular because it has much of the excitement and violence as hockey, but you only have to pay attention for 8 seconds every for every 1 minute, and then you can go back to eating nachos.
biggcb@reddit
Never got into it. I have friends where it is their primary sport to watch.
prettylittlelondon@reddit
It's my favorite sport. I go to 30-40 Avs games every season.
SoCalRealty@reddit
I know one guy who watches hockey regularly, but he loves it.
Baseball is THE pastime though.
diegotbn@reddit
I don't. Nothing against it though.
MetroBS@reddit
Hockey is such a fun sport to watch
Honestly the reason I think it’s not as popular as some of the other sports is because any kid can pick up a baseball or a basketball or a football and go play with their friends, but hockey is really expensive and requires access to ice and knowing how to skate
Derwin0@reddit
Fun to watch, but very regional with most interest being up north.
dangleicious13@reddit
One of the two sports I somewhat watch.
Bored_Dad_Scrolling@reddit
My wife never watched sports before meeting me. It’s her favorite to watch.
I also think it’s the favorite of all my kids to go see in person. Hockey rules
Ok-Entertainment5045@reddit
I’m a huge Redwings fan as well as college hockey. It’s an awesome sport that is so fast paced. I love Olympic years when all the NHL guys play. It’s some of the best hockey around.
GhostOfJamesStrang@reddit
I love it.
Lugbor@reddit
I miss the days where they let the players fight. Last game I went to, they say the gloves coming off and put both players in the penalty box before they even got to swing.
dgputnam@reddit
It’s just called hockey, and it rules. Definitely my favorite sport.
Big where I grew up in CT
timeonmyhandz@reddit
Like soccer on fast forward.. much better!
mads_61@reddit
I’ve never played it but it’s by far my favorite sport to follow/watch. American football is a good sport to watch on TV with all the breaks but hockey is a great sport to watch in person. The atmosphere is incredible.
STS986@reddit
Love it, might be the most exciting playoff sport to watch especially live
yescaman@reddit
I like it, a great sport to attend in person
Intelligent-Block457@reddit
Love hockey. Spent a lot of time on frozen ponds as a kid and putting pucks through the garage windows practicing my slapshots in the summer. It's just wicked expensive to play if you need or want all the pads.
kaosrules2@reddit
Most entertaining sport, love it.
New-Row7111@reddit
Love it! Played it all the way through college! From MN so it’s about as big here as football would be in Texas
drivernopassenger@reddit
I don’t, but when I do I generally think it sounds like a pretty good time.
Successful_League175@reddit
I feel like it's a pretty cool sport, but I legitimately have no idea where the puck is when I'm watching on TV. Like even paying super close attention I can never see it so I can't watch for more than a few minutes without giving up. I assume it's really fun in person, but I have a hard time getting into the televised product.
ziggyjoe2@reddit
Best sport to watch.
In America it's a very popular in the cities that have an NHL team. But everywhere else it's an afterthought.
damageddude@reddit
Soccer (football) at high speed without being to easily see the puck. Much more fun to watch in person than on TV where it is harder to follow the action.
BlahBlahILoveToast@reddit
Basically the only sport I'm interested in watching. We have a local team and they're cool. We also have a local bar that shows all the games and buys shots when the team scores.
flamableozone@reddit
It's excellent, I'm a Devils fan - any year that either we win the cup or the rangers don't is a good year, so it's been a lot of good years.
UpperLowerMidwest@reddit
It's soccer on ice with fights and big shirts and Canadians.
PuzzleheadedLemon353@reddit
Love it!!!
anneofgraygardens@reddit
I think it is a sport.
Technical_Air6660@reddit
I didn’t think much of it until I went to a live game. It’s incredibly fun in person.
marc4128@reddit
Love hockey..#GOCAPS.
TheRealDudeMitch@reddit
It’s my favorite sport. I don’t play it because cant skate for shit but I love watching it. The Chicago Blackhawks (NHL) and Bloomington Bison (ECHL) are my favorite teams.
redmambo_no6@reddit
Put it this way—I’ve watched more hockey in the past month than I did all of last year.
Stfu_butthead@reddit
It’s pretty chill
redditprofile99@reddit
It's not as popular as the big three. I'm not really a fan, but live hockey games are the absolute best live games to watch.
grayghoster@reddit
It has no balls, it’s frigid, and it has periods. It’s a wife, not a sport!
boogiedownbronxite@reddit
Intense and chaotic. I love it
fernincornwall@reddit
Love it.
Tickets are expensive af do I don’t get to go to games as often as I’d like though…
sto_brohammed@reddit
It's God's sport.
omnipresent_sailfish@reddit
Love it. It's the main sport I follow
Vixter4@reddit
Well, it's definitely a lot more fun than baseball and basketball.
