For those of you living in the U.S., what kind of wall decor makes your home feel more personal and cozy?
Posted by Flaky_Friendship8842@reddit | AskAnAmerican | View on Reddit | 355 comments
I don’t live in the U.S., but I’ve always been curious about how people there decorate their living spaces—especially the walls. What types of wall decor do you have at home that really make the space feel warm, inviting, or personal?
Do you prefer framed art, family photos, posters, canvas prints, wall shelves, or something else? Are there any themes you love (like nature, abstract art, quotes, pop culture, etc.)?
I’d love to hear what you think adds character to a home!
AbundantDonkey@reddit
Books. We have a lot of books. They're all immensely personal as there are books from our childhoods, work, and hobbies. The fun part is the nonfiction section we keep near our desks, where one topic blends into another and you can see the overlap between our backgrounds.

I display photos of my family mostly. I also collect bears, so I have a small wall with bear images and stuff on it.
Rattlingplates@reddit
Just ice cold ac and clean sheets. Only thing I do at home is sleep or lay with my woman.
Lazaara@reddit
Posters of things I love. I have a movie size doctor who poster with a quote from Vincent and the doctor, a signed Lewis Black poster from his red, white, and screwed tour, a Guinness poster, the rant from Chevy chase in Christmas vacation in a cute little frame and 3 small canvas reprints of 3 Van Gogh’s famous works. He’s our favorite artist.
saltcityparadox@reddit
Buy original art by local artists. Find pieces that speak to you. Prints from home decor stores look cheap and have no personality.
DK7795@reddit
I like framed art. I also have a couple pictures of family.

needsmorequeso@reddit
I’m lucky to have a few artists in the family and my house has their stuff all over the walls.

I’m an artist and have given / created so many pieces for family. However, one of them is cut off as they’ve never put anything up.

I have a Farrah fawcett poster from the 70’s

I love it. I have framed art on my walls from my grandma, my dad, and my twin. My hands are dumb, though.

Same
pupper71@reddit
Same. I have a couple of my great-uncle's paintings, one of my grandma's, and some prints of great-grandpa's photography (he was fantastic, most were taken before 1920). Also some other paintings picked up at a local arts' fair.
round_a_squared@reddit
My wife and my grandmother were both into genealogy and fiber arts, and so we inherited a collection of antique cross-stitch samplers from various women in our family history. I also had some art from my daughter framed that I hang in my office.

I've bought original art off Ebay, from locals, and at estate sales. I like modern art, so there's rarely a bidding war.
PavicaMalic@reddit
Same. I traveled a lot for work, so we have paintings I bought then, too.
Effective_Pear4760@reddit
Yep. I have mostly paintings, prints, and posters of paintings. A few photographs. I also am lucky to have some artists in the family so I have some of their works.
We set up one hall as an "art gallery" for my son, and would post his paintings as a kid.
My grandmother indicated that when she died, the special things I made for her should come back to me. So when she died, I got back a (framed) cross stitch family tree of my grandmother, her husband and kids; a commemorative plate of the church where they were married; a small rack of decorative spoons (some hers, some mine); and a framed quilt square. She was also an artist who mostly painted so I have several paintings she did of me, my son, and one of horses. My dad is leaving me a portrait of a 17th century priest, painted in the 19th century.

My aunt is in her late 70’s and still has these on her wall in the breakfast room. They’re next to a piece of wood that’s been shellacked 1000 times that has a picture of a baby with a bowl of spaghetti spilled on his head.

When I moved in with my husband, a friend gave me a welcome gift of a Live, Laugh, Love frame with photos of our Skeletor and Evil-lyn cosplays. It's definitely the one exception of that tripe that gets a proud place in my home.

Framed art. Some of it is by family members, some of it was purchased by me or other family members. I also have my maternal grandparents' wedding portrait from the 1930s, which is a photograph.
B0red_0wl@reddit
My mom likes to put up textiles and artwork, I used to paint a lot so I've mostly got my own paintings (mostly nature scenes)
LukeSkywalkerDog@reddit
I happen to like sunburst mirrors.
macoafi@reddit
I have a metric fuckload of unframed art. Most of it is prints bought at sci-fi and anime conventions. We have wires strung up across the walls, and a rotating selection is pinned up with clips. The overage is stored in a portfolio in the closet and an archival box for the smaller items.
Not-a-Kitten@reddit
Kids art.
Affectionate_Face741@reddit
I have one wall that is a collection of my kids art, floor to ceiling no space in between.
Simply_Sloppy0013@reddit
Nothing says "home" quite like walls covered with orange shag carpeting.
Electric-Sheepskin@reddit
I don't care for family photos. I like art that either makes me feel happy, like brightly-colored paintings of abstract scenery or flowers— or art that makes me feel peaceful, like a photograph of a misty lake. I also like whimsical wall sculptures, like things that are made out of metal.
AutoMechanic2@reddit
I have stuff that’s of my interests. Like I have walls of license plates because I like them as a car guy. Also against a lot of my wall space is shelves of movies because I’m a movie collector. I also like rustic stuff and family pictures.
Fireandmoonlight@reddit
My big hobby was outdoor nighttime time exposures of Moon and Stars with nice trees and rocks lit up by a fire in the foreground so there's lots of framed pix of that. Also Indian rock art.
GuitarMessenger@reddit
I've been in my current apartment for 10 years now and I have nothing on the walls. Except for a clock in the living room.
ShadowlessKat@reddit
It's an individual choice. I have a mix in my home because I like it. There's a wall in my living room dedicated to family pictures. In another room I have a framed picture of a wolf photograph. In another room, a framed painting depiction of Noah's ark with many animals.
Throughout the house I have elephant decor (mirrors, lamps, etc) because those make me happy.
In the bathrooms I have beach decor and seashells.
Decorate your home in whichever way makes you happy.
tamster0111@reddit
I am single so no "wall of shame" (family picture wall). I have art I like!
BrainFartTheFirst@reddit
Family photos, old advertising especially for things like ships and trains, my mother's needlepoint, and in my case an old weight loss ad that my mother modeled for.
cannikin13@reddit
I’m a surveyor and a map maker…my walls are decorated with maps old and new, geodesy, antique surveying instruments, compasses, flags of the world, etc
Khpatton@reddit
We have a lot of artwork we’ve mostly bought from local artists from where we live and from where we’ve traveled.
MissMurderpants@reddit
Pictures of people I care about or interesting places I’ve been.
Artwork. And I’m not talking oil paintings or movie posters. I have several watercolors given to me. Some hanging quilts family made and given to me.
squarebodynewb@reddit
My wifes paintings. And when shes done with the look i get to buy all new pillows and blankets and other decor to make the rooms "come together".

CupBeEmpty@reddit
Yeah this one’s the real deal. .30-06 can indeed kill any big game in North America. Though I don’t think you can use it on most of the big game. Conservation is key.
The rack is something around 5 foot wide maybe more. I also shouldn’t say head. It’s the rack not the whole head. Misspeak on my part.
SweetandSourCaroline@reddit
.30-06 has a kick though!
CupBeEmpty@reddit
It certainly did for that moose.
I can remember learning to shoot with my dad young and said “oh I want to shoot that” he gently said “ehhh maybe next year” as I was holding a little .22lr plunker.

I have a few friends and family members who are artists, so I have their original work, and posters and prints from other artists- usually related to fantasy or TTRPGs. I also have LOTS of photographs of my friends and family. Most of my walls are covered by bookshelves, which are a reflection of my and my husband's personalities as well.
CandidateNo2731@reddit
I have framed prints that are meaningful to me, original paintings on canvas, framed vintage photos, art done by my children, paintings that I have done, and things I've picked up on my travels or in antique shops. If I love it, I put it on the wall.

Primary_Excuse_7183@reddit
My first apartment i exclusively only hung pictures i had taken personally for my wall decor.
Ms-Metal@reddit
Framed art, a lot of photography, both our own and others, unframed art, just on canvas, I don't really have too many personal photos up of family because I have a very small family. But I wouldn't say that they Decor is meant to be cozy, I like a museum look in my homes, I like everything white and gray with the color coming from the artwork. It makes it feel personal yes but I wouldn't say it makes it feel cozy and I think cozy is a style that doesn't suit me, so it's not something I go for. I go for things that make me smile and things that feel sophisticated.
xmetalheadx666x@reddit
It depends on the room. Most rooms I prefer some form of framed art except for my hobby room which has all sorts of collectibles and posters.
LoopDeLoop0@reddit
My granddad was a woodturning hobbyist, so I feel cozy with his work up on a shelf. And my mom has tons of family photos, which also feel cozy.
12B88M@reddit
The rooms I feel most comfortable in have muted colors on the walls and personal things.
For example, my office has tan walls and has numerous pictures of the things I've seen and done.
Coins from European nations I've visited that no longer have their own currency since they use the Euro.
Pictures and awards from my military service.
College photos.
A crown mount from my first buck I ever killed and a nice European mount of the biggest one I ever got.
A humorous poster from my college days.
Pictures of my daughter and a hand written note from her when she was very young that says "Daddy, I love you VERY much." in that little girl scrawl she had.

I prefer family photos over the normal hobby lobby decor. I do have a couple pieces of art that have been passed down to me generationally but other than that it's pretty much just family photos through the years. I'm not a fan of the "Live ,Laugh ,Love" farm decor or anything like that.
HavBoWilTrvl@reddit
We have a mix of things on our walls. Photos my husband took during our trip out West are in the dining room. The hall is for family photos. I have different things in different areas. One gallery wall with lots of family photos, the kids each have their own boards where we pin up their artwork/achievements (we rotate throughout the year), souvenirs from travels (australian boomerangs, fans from Singapore, ect), framed art, different musical instruments, ect. It makes the house feel personalized and I love seeing all the things we have done over the years out on display instead of tucked away.

I have a couple of framed posters, and I also have some photos of friends and family. I also like to go to craft fairs and have picked some things up over the years. Nothing really expensive. One of my favorite things is a photo of my favorite beach in Maine. I loved the photo, so I had it blown up and framed it. Everything on the wall has personal meaning in some way.

I avoid anything with writing on it, as I will obsessively read it aloud in my head every time I see it and who needs that noise.
I try not to have too many pictures of people in the same room. It starts to feel like living in a crowded party.
So for instance in my living/dining room combination - one huge abstract painting, one mirror, two graphic pictures with the same theme next to each other, one big wedding photo. A few smaller framed pictures of people but restricted to the top of the piano.

Lots of family photos, homemade art from younger relatives, and a lot of things related to Pittsburgh sports teams.
Also, everyone I know kinda has that one thing everyone knows they love so you get a lot of little decorative pieces related to that one thing because friends and family associate you with it. For me that was anything patriotic or Penguins (Pittsburgh's NHL team)

Walls: Art from local artists or art shows over the years. No words, no family portraits (that's what photo albums are for). I'm mindful of colors being harmonious within the room and avoid images that are overly busy, or jarring, or too cutesy or preachy. I've never had problem finding artwork I love - only problem is I don't have enough wall space to hang all of them at once!

I imagine it's the same as everywhere else and varies from household to household according to taste. Plenty of Americans hang up posters either framed or unframed. Movie posters, concert posters, or other event posters. Plenty also post images of sayings, such as "home sweet home", or the ubiquitous "live love laugh" sign. My brother has lots of family photos on his wall. My sister has etchings watercolors and family photos. I have mostly oil paintings, but am slowly planning on acquiring some prints and watercolors. Some people hang 3-D art, such as wreaths, decorative ceramic plates or tiles, African or Native American masks, or some bas-relief sculptures. I bought a ceramic clock that I plan to hang on a wall in my kitchen.
BobsleddingToMyGrave@reddit

We collect all sorts of things that we use to decorate. I’m a sucker for paintings and needlework of bluebonnets and cows. Antique and vintage metal signs, pewter-ware, US license plates, militaria, and car memorabilia. Framed art made by our children and niece. Cow skulls, all sorts of family photos and history. I hate to think of things boxed up and not shared. When we move, it will take forever to pack!

I have some antique embroideries a great aunt brought home from pre-revolutionary China, a cloissoné plate with a picture of a quail, a painting and a pen-and-ink drawing, both of owls, an oil painting of a rushing brook in the woods over the fireplace. I have some items my great aunt painted, beautiful landscapes of the US Southwest region. I have a painting that was in my grandmother’s house of a little girl playing on the beach when I was little she always said the little girl looked like me, I have things my mother and my friends have painted or drawn.
It’s a kind of eclectic mix, but I love it and everyone that’s been in my home says it’s “cozy” and “warm feeling”

Family photos for sure. I also like to pick up professional photos, poster art, art prints, of places we love and frame/hang those up.

I have a little of each. My walls are not overwhelmed. 1 Polo club (LN) over the fireplace, a mirror and a gold Sunburst clock in the long wall in my living room and 1 Vogue cover print in each bedroom. Family photos, a certain clock that we've had for years and a framed print that we've had for over 20 years that used to hang in my mother in law's home.
siamlinio@reddit
In the living room (parlor?), there are two generic landscape paintings that my in-laws were getting rid of, so I asked if I could have them and they said yes. My main interest in them was that their frames match the wood tones of furniture in the room, and the colors in the art (autumn themes) match other colors in the (70's inspired) room.
In the dining room hangs another painting that my in-laws provided, but this one they surprised us with, as a gift. It has a silver frame, and the art is of a Parisian cafe, done with a lot of green tones that match the green paint we used for the dining room walls.
In the hallway hangs one lonely artwork, a small canvas not much bigger than my palm and fingers. A friend of mine was experimenting with oil pastels many years ago, and gave it to me. It's abstract, I don't know if the art is of anything, I haven't had the courage to ask, but since the electrician's last visit left a hole in the drywall where an outdated smoke detector used to be, the artwork serves the very important task of hiding the hole so I don't have to figure out how to patch something that high up. Art gifts from friends do deserve a more respectable, eye-level position on the wall, and they also deserve to be displayed in a location where clumsy humans and mischievous cats can't bother it, so here we are.
In Bedroom #1, there is an acoustic guitar that is played less than once a year, two unframed pages separated from a calendar depicting (forest animal), two unframed pages of hand-created "nonogram" puzzles, a wooden picture carved by a relative and depicting a cat, and an autographed poster from (concert). The last item needs a sentence all to itself: there is also a sheet of plywood leaning against the wall instead of hanging, and on it I painted a specific event boss from (game #1) and then I cut three holes into it so that it could be used in a bean bag toss game for a specific in-person event. Now it just rests against the wall and the cats hide behind it.
In bedroom #2, there are five framed fanart prints for (game #2), a duplicate autographed poster from the same concert mentioned before, a hanging scroll? poster? depicting the main character from an anime, a dry erase board that sometimes has doodles drawn on but usually a to-do list, a dream catcher that I don't remember where it came from, an "obon", and an abstract ORIGINAL (not a print) painting that was painted by an actual tiger. I can look closely and see where the tiger accidentally shed a hair into the (safe! nontoxic!) paint.
More about the tiger painting: No tigers were exploited or forced to make paintings. A responsibly run big cat and wildlife refuge was exploring new enrichment activities for the animals, and all completed paintings were painted by willing participants. The refuge held a fundraiser where the paintings (originals and prints) were available for sale, but it was more of a fun educational thing. By every original was a huge poster that showed a picture of the tiger, lion, or etc. that made that painting, and also included a biography/history on that animal. Some animals came to this refuge from individual owners, some came from other refuges that were too small or had to close down, some came from very abusive situations, some even came from the actual Tiger King place. I was drawn to the fundraiser event because I support the work that they do in helping these animals recover from their previous situations, but I was drawn to this specific artwork because when I saw it, I knew exactly where it needed to go.

Most of my artwork is oil canvas prints, though I do have a few lithographs, family photos and prints.
I change all of the canvas and prints seasonally. Currently it’s summer, so the theme is the ocean and sunny landscapes and a print of Van Gogh’s The Cafe Terrace. In fall, it’s autumn trees and leaves. In winter its snowy landscapes and snowflake and a print of David Winston’s Solitude. In spring is trees and flowers in bloom and birds and butterflies and a print of Van Gogh’s Starry Night.

I have things that have some sort of connection to me on my walls. Some are portraits of our family. Some are things I’ve bought while traveling. I have a few prints/paintings from local artists and artists from my hometown. I don’t really have a cohesive thing going. If it means something to me it can go on my wall.
Chiomi@reddit
The answer for me is Yes. By which I mean: * walls are painted colors I like or wallpapered. Mostly we hired a guy for wallpaper, but I did the sections of my closet that are wallpapered * scattered around the house are David Goines prints. He was a commercial artist in San Francisco and they were gifted to me personally as a toddler by him and then framed for me by my parents as a high school graduation present. Because I am a nerd and it makes me happy, the North Face poster always goes on the northernmost wall in wherever we live. The Farmers Market and Ravenswood Winery prints are in the kitchen because food * we like maps, so we also have a map of supper clubs in the state in the kitchen * the kitchen also has art I made and local art that fit the color scheme * our fridge is not magnetic on the front for some stupid reason, so family photos are held on by stickers * the living room has two small pieces of art on the window wall - which has custom curtains we made- and a small cluster of a picture of the house just after it was built in 1905, two prints we bought locally that match the look and vibe, and the embroidery piece with our WiFi password on it * the library has a section on the wall for family photos, including a board with magnets for swapping out photos * the library also has the 3d wooden puzzle globe I made, a small antique globe we found, an architectural print, and fictional maps on the wall. We’ve got three now: from the Dragon Age games, the Zelda games, and the Tortall books * there’s also fake flower arrangements above some doors. We’ve got really high ceilings and I wanted Christmas boughs our first year here, so we put up hooks to keep things in place. Now there are seasonal arrangements every season - three years in and this is the first time we’ve had summer as opposed to just leaving spring up until Halloween. Next year they will evolve * my office the section behind me in video calls just has my framed diploma and a framed Hamilton quote (passionately smashing every expectation). The wall I’m facing, though, is a gallery wall - including a ceiling mounted rail system because that wall is just plaster over stone and it’s the only practical way to hang. The gallery wall has art made by a friend of mine, video game art, protest art, and art done by my spouse
We also have tiny statues on various lintels, small tapestries, poster prints I found in the garage (why was there a massive Flaming June print in the garage? No idea but I crocheted a frame and hung it anyway), a thing I accidentally won in a silent auction, a beautiful watercolor flower giclee I bought after I got my first raise at my current job, a picture of me as a kid, a portrait of my grandparents, and a bunch of the diamond paintings I do to relax and then frame myself. Oh, tiny metal 3d puzzles are also over various lintels because I do those a lot, too.
Other ways we decorate our walls are with better switch plate covers. Smooth white or almond plastic is boring, and with 2 minutes work it can look way cooler. We’ve got William morris prints and interesting metal and wood to blend with paneling (including one custom one that involved contacting the maker on Etsy) and fancy antique-looking nonsense. This is also super renter-friendly as long as you keep the old ones.
Some of this increases coziness, but a lot of it is just way more personalization because it makes us happy.
Oh! Especially the tiny magnet statues that work as hinge toppers. That’s not walls, I guess, but I have a tiny magnetic beehive arriving soon and I’m incredibly stoked.
Curmudgy@reddit
I don’t think of wall decor as a way to make a house cozy. I rely on comfortable chairs, cushions, food aromas, etc. for that.
That doesn’t mean we don’t have art on our walls. Just that the purpose of the artwork is to decorate, not create a specific coziness feeling.

I have a nice mixture of paintings (one from my sister, most from Phoenix-based artists since I lived there for such a long time), and movie posters. Most of my posters are from 1960s counter culture movies, or posters that I acquired while working at movie theaters over the years. I have a Grateful Dead concert poster that I like a lot. One of my movie posters, which I got from an antique shop in Phoenix, is a vintage lithograph-printed poster (like, on actual poster board, instead of these lame ass paper movie posters we have now) from the original 1914 release of the Charlie Chaplin/Minta Durfee short film Cruel, Cruel Love (which was Chaplin's first year in the industry!). I also have an old film reel from a movie theater I used to work for on my wall, a couple of quote signs that were hand made for me over the years, some poetry, and my favorite piece I own is probably this tiny little reprint of a Ralph Steadman piece that they printed onto a 100 tab sheet of blotter paper. I love it. ❤️ Also, a lot of book shelves! It's very busy looking, I hate blank walls!

My hallway is a combination of a gallery of my kids’ artwork and art painted directly on the wall a la Nathalie Lete.
Efficient_Wheel_6333@reddit
For me, it's a mix. The rooms I typically hang out in have a lot of various small wall hangings (2 enclosed pin boards for my Disney pins, a wall calendar, a print of a Mothman painting, some sort of embroidered Japanese thing, and a thing that says 'It always seems impossible until it's done), and a bunch of small tchotchkes hanging out on various surfaces (Disney, Power Rangers, this kimono-wearing-anthropomorphized cat music box, among others), and a couple of small Christmas trees with most of my ornaments on them.
For the rooms that are shared with visiting family, that's got family photos, a wall clock, and various statues that we inherited from my grandparents that get rotated seasonally.
Homemade blankets are also spread throughout the house (I knit and crochet); there's at least 2 that I've made in the tv room. The remainder that I've made are spread between my bedroom, the office I hang out in, and one of the guest bedrooms. I've offered other blankets for the guest rooms, particularly when it gets cold out and family are visiting for the holidays, but I've been turned down each time.

CupBeEmpty@reddit
Man we used to have that when we lived in Providence. Horse hair lathe and plaster walls. Absolutely miserable.
Effective_Pear4760@reddit
We have plaster and lathe walls (no horse hair). We've had good luck mounting things by sticking a piece of packing tape on the wall and driving a finishing nail in about a cm or 1/2 inch.
CupBeEmpty@reddit
Yeah we hung a couple things with a similar method. The real problem is that it breaks up the plaster on the backside of the lathe which then just falls down into the space between the wall and then still causes the interior facing plaster to fall off the lathe.
It’s just a crappy system all around.

I have one really large painting it’s of a mountain scene and Lake, I have another one that’s my one of my favorites as well, it’s of a lighthouse on the beach, then another one that is just beach scene with palm trees, swinging in the wind, and then there’s one next to that, it’s a beach scene with palm tree, swinging in the wind and clouds, in the one cloud, there is an outline of this cloud, as I used to do when I was little with my sister, we will lay on the grass and we would look at the clouds to see what they look like

In my study I have letter press prints that commemorate special events like concerts or things about my community. I’m lucky that I’m surrounded by creative people who will give me their art/craft or trade with me. Oh, I also have a collection of framed Panamanian molas that my grandfather started and I have added to and some Hmong embroidery with people and animals on it.

I like a lot of art on my walls, shelves filled with books and Knick-knacks that I've collected and like. I took fake lamp and stuffed string lights into it and placed it on my wall and it has a sort of Narnia feel to it that I really enjoy. Hanging plants. Having a rug as well. A lot of my friends will have art on their walls.

I have a massive collection of framed mirrors.

Halloween decor, my wife and I have a fake skeleton sitting at our dinner table. We even put clothes and hats on it and tell guests “that’s grandpa, he doesn’t talk much”.

My favorite was a friend's house which had an upside down 福 character in traditional gold over a red background and two crossed AKs mounted below it, all over a fireplace. It doesn't get any more Chinese-American than that.
raindorpsonroses@reddit
I think that warm and cozy is not always the vibe that makes sense. I want my house to be inviting and personal, but I live somewhere warm and beachy. I don’t want the house to feel warm and cozy, it’s too hot for that.
That said, ways I might add softness and personality to a modern house in a warm climate: textured wall hangings (fabric, wood, woven), art with personal meaning and varying sizes/styles (not just multiple copies of the same abstract prints from the local discount store), family photos, throw rugs on hard floors, plants, candles or reed diffusers, fresh flowers on the table, curtains around windows, colorful pillows on the couch, table or floor lamps

My parents and grandparent had an incredible amount of framed art in their homes. I have always felt like having art on the walls was indicative of adulthood, so once I had my own place I started building a collection. For years I've gone to art festivals in the summers and bought stuff from local artists. My parents have given me paintings from their own collections and I have my favorite pieces from my grandmother. I don't really have a theme so much as I have paintings (mostly water color but also oil), pencil drawing, pen and ink, photographs, caligraphy, and needlework that I like.
JennyPaints@reddit
Local artists everywhere salute you!
Grouchy_Snail@reddit
I also got a fair amount of art from my grandparents (though it was through inheritance). They loved original art and collected some very cool pieces throughout their lives. I feel very fortunate to have family heirlooms!
I do also buy original art, myself. Even my cats’ urns were handmade (carved or sculpted) and just look like beautiful art.
To OP, I also have a large mirror with shelves (originally the top of a bar) on the wall to display my vintage camera and projector collection.
tandabat@reddit
Art from all my artistic friends and family. I have several amazing abstract photographs from my dad. Some animals photographed by an internet friend from the south, rural still life from a friend I lost to depression, a drawing by a hippie friend of my dad’s, a painting and a drawing from my grandmother, I think a photo from my mom, and a set of prints by an illustrator at the renaissance faire. Plus whatever art of the week my kids have made. Oh and a couple bob ross style paintings I did.
elonmusktheturd22@reddit
On my wall rn is a calf skull with small horns (he was a runt that died on dec 27, 2017 in my barn). The most illegal stick in my state (a natural white ash branch as a side handle batton) a wooden spoon i made by coal burning 30 years ago, and a wooden trencher/bowl i made coal burning 14 years ago. A candlebug (candle lantern), a homemade backpack with a wooden frame, a machete, a sword i forged 16 years ago on my anvil, my old cruser vest from the ranger school (forest ranger college) with my timber inventory tools in it. the old outdoor thermostat from my office (was given to me as a going away gift when i left in 2013). And Wooden snowshoes. Used to have a homemade bow on the wall too but i took it down.

Most everything hanging on my walls has some sort of story behind it. My dining area is where I hang posters, pictures, etc. from my travels. The only exception is an IKEA print over the back of my sofa that I bought as a temporary piece but ended up keeping.
wizardyourlifeforce@reddit
Original oil paintings, preferably landscapes though I’m not picky since it’s hard to find inexpensive art that isn’t factory art
mykepagan@reddit
Lots of oil paintings done by my daughter, who is an illustrator and art teacher.
Dusty_Old_McCormick@reddit
I have a mix of canvas paintings, framed vintage posters, and a 7-foot framed tapestry (family heirloom) in the sitting room. Our aesthetic leans towards bold colors & strong lines, and a midcentury vibe. I recently scored a Lenox Spice Village and rack, which I plan on hanging in the dining room to add a bit of "cozy cottage".
One thing we've done is try to pick up a small art print wherever we take a vacation. We'll spend a morning looking around the local galleries or flea markets and may find a piece to take home as a souvenir. I love having a little story behind our art pieces, and looking at them reminds me of our travels!
Vivid-Fennel3234@reddit
I have a partial wall of my collectibles - figurines, playbills/show tickets, tour posters, pins, stuff like that and a couple small art pieces scattered around. Other than that, I don’t really care about stuff on the walls.

Anything and everything that catches my eye. We have framed posters, framed art from yard sales and thrift stores and flea markets. Art prints from various artists. Canvas prints of photos. We bought most of it but some were gifted. No specific theme or style, just anything that catches our eye.

Family photos, nature framed art and framed watercolors of cityscapes.

My grandma was a painter, so I have a lot of her pieces around my house. Old family photos, pictures and paintings of my dogs, mirrors. The stairwell up from my office & garage is covered in Prince memorabilia. I’m a huge fan and my niece thought it should be displayed so she made both walls & the landing area into gallery walls of all my Prince stuff from the last 40 yrs 😊

Grandma took up painting as a hobby. No one will buy her paintings, but she was good in a primitive folksy way. She painted this large barn with the sunsetting behind it and green pasture. I have that hanging front and center in my livingroom, people compliment me on it. Then, around that, i have other prints and whatnot all in a country style. We have an aerial view of our farmstead.
The other walls are filled with family photos and religious art.

Whatever I want. Got a picture of the eclipse that went over Texas that I took. Dead butterflies in a glass case. Video game wood cut thing my mom got my sister. Part of my sister rock collection in a hanging case. Paintings my grandfather gave us from various friends of his as well as some local painters.

State flag or shape of state in various decorative forms (not just a flag on a wall, its wall decor)
TheBimpo@reddit
It really just boils down to your personality.
Most of my home has a mixture of mid-century aesthetic, mixed with kind of a Scandinavian modern cabin feel. I have things on the walls like a modern illustration of Birch trees, a wooden antique toy canoe, a framed mixed media piece of Sasquatch hiding behind a pine, another illustration from a local vista, a painting of a beach scene, and another of a bear playing a guitar.
My office is more eclectic. I have some old family photographs, a framed, American flag, a map of my state, rock ‘n’ roll posters, pictures from my travels, etc..
Somebody else might line their living room with movie or video game posters. It’s really just about your interests and your preferences.

Original art. My grandma was an abstract expressionist, so some of that mixed with art we've collected on our travels. We particularly like Northwest Coast Native American art. I'm a photographer, so some of my prints. We had a concession stand for a couple of years, so there's a giant soft serve ice cream cone in the kitchen. You know, normal stuff.

I like framed art and other artwork but I live in a very modern home that has very few internal walls. Sadly, I have very little space to hang anything. I have a lot of archways, large windows, and small accent/support walls.

TheTerribleTimmyCat@reddit
My husband and I love finding the creepiest paintings in whatever museum we visit, and then buying a print of it for our home. A print of Goya's Saturn Devouring His Son, for example, holds a place of honor in our dining room. In the living room there are several others including such classics as Two Followers of Cadmus Devoured by a Dragon, and a couple of Caravaggio prints like Judith Beheading Holofernes and Medusa. We have The Nightmare by Henry Fuseli hanging over our bed.
Ok_Gas5386@reddit
I’ve got a lot of Van Gogh landscape prints. Everyone enjoys those, they’d be pretty common. Growing up, my parents had a lot of Thomas Kinkade prints up, which I would personally never put up in my home but I think is also common. He was the most popular contemporary American artist for a reason.
Lots of photographs of loved ones.
I also have stylized posters of the national parks I’ve visited. At least two of my friends do the same thing.
A more unique interest of mine is old maps. I have three prints of medieval European mappae mundi from the 12th-14th centuries, a bird’s eye of Edinburgh from the 16th century, a bird’s eye of Boston from the 1850s, and a bird’s eye of my hometown from the 1870s. I intend to collect more.
For covering lots of space, older people might still use wallpaper but I think tapestry is more popular with younger people.

FunkySalamander1@reddit
This is going to be completely different for each individual. Is it more uniform in your country? Do most people decorate the same way? For me, it’s usually art we’ve had framed, some of which I made, or art on canvas, some of which I made. We do have a cool, large clock where the number are on what appears to be a large gear, and it’s the gear that turns rather than having hands.

I have maps from different dnd setting and rpg books hung around my place. Framed so they don't get damaged.
Caorum, Athas, and Sigil being the main three. I used to have Golarion, ships of spelljammer, and about seven other maps but then I moved and didn't want he walls as cluttered.

Depends on the room and what it is used for. I mostly decorate with themes from nature, woods, streams, birds, animals, etc. Framed prints, etchings and carvings
However
In my garage, I've got a bit of a pub vibe with antique wall tins. The tins are mostly beer and automotive signs.
My office has lots of books and an American theme with framed Declaration of Independence, US Constitution and my Dad's Burial Flag.
My Game room has a Rock and Roll theme. With B/W photos of Detroit, Rock and Roll Hall of Fame memorabilia, and wall mounted Guitars.
My Family Room and Dining Rooms have themes from nature plus family photos.
I also make some seasonal adjustments to my decor throughout the year. For example, I currently have an american theme in some areas for our Independence Day. I'll do something different for Fall/Halloween, Winter/Christmas, etc.

I have family pictures in the stair way. In the main living room, I have a couple of digital prints and paintings.
I have a really cool stained glass piece in my dining room.
When I was in high school, my room was the very stereotypical American teenager room. I had like 20 posters (including a blacklight poster) and even hung some on the ceiling. In between the posters was art from either myself or my friends. There wasn't any wall left by the time I moved out.
