Scammed at Stylish Homes Downtown Buda

I want to share a terrible experience I had with an accommodation in Budapest booked via Booking.com, but unfortunately not covered by them.
From the start, it was a complete disaster: filthy conditions, bedbugs, a huge cockroach I had to deal with myself, no towels, broken furniture, and unfriendly cleaning staff who seemed to expect tips just for replying to a “good morning.” To top it off, two people entered the apartment during check-in because they hadn’t received the code, and I had to help them sort it out.
But the worst part: the accommodation changed the access code without notifying me and ignored all my emergency calls and messages all day. I ended up having to sleep on the street one of the three nights I booked — with my medication and belongings locked inside.
What really makes this unforgivable is that they never apologized. Instead, they had the nerve to say, “after midnight, we’re sleeping” (lucky them) and accused me of “lurking the street,” implying I was drunk and high — which is completely false. I barely saw anyone except the cleaning staff.
This is a SCAM of monumental proportions. It’s cheap, but you get even less than what you pay for, plus they insult and judge you for simply enjoying your vacation in a beautiful city like Budapest.
Below is their response to my review, which is not only false but also offensive and unprofessional:
I have videos and screenshots proving their shady and faulty methods. I’m sharing this upon request so others don’t fall into the same trap.
If you want to see more opinions, look up other reviews — it’s clear this isn’t an isolated case.
I’m done caring about the money — I just wanted a genuine apology. But now I want the truth to be known, and I will keep sharing this story until this awful place gets exposed for what it really is.

Your post has been removed from r/budapest because the omniscient power-hungry mods looked into the future and saw great flame wars in the comment section.
Please don't be discouraged by this from contributing to r/budapest! It's not you, it's not even the post, it's that discussing topics like this is hard and nobody except you and (obviously the omnipotent crazy mods) could ever do it in a nice, insightful, and constructive way.
Thank you again for submitting content to r/budapest!

These places are usually run by foreign investors across eastern Europe...

I had a blast with the locals, great food and overall experience, and really beautiful and quiet city indeed! It's just that I left with a bittersweet aftertaste due to the ill-intentioned and cheating ways of the place I was staying at. Cheers!
Nargapo@reddit
I mean, it has a 3.9 rating out of 10 on Booking.com (740 reviews). Also by the comments of the owner, it is clear, that they are assholes. You did not get scammed, sadly you picked a clearly shitty place for cheap and got surprised, that it is actually shit.
littlewizard123@reddit
Mate, it’s still a scam.
reptileshrine@reddit (OP)
You do have a point. I rarely travel and got the bad end of it due to inexperience. Lesson learned, still it's not what I paid for.
vahokif@reddit
Never go below 8 rating on Booking, 3.9 is the worst I've ever seen.
Narcissus44@reddit
It's okay, first time for anything. Fell people like the host will continue to exist even if there are few of them. The world isn't ideal. It's beautiful and brutal at the same time. Just be a bit more diligent next time.
GeneralAd1047@reddit
I have never seen such low rating, actually I would not book anything below 8, I rather go down market than stay in a "nice" place with bad reviews.
Fancy_Estimate6036@reddit
And 1.6 on google
littlewizard123@reddit
3.9/10 and people are still booking it!
Mobile_Foundation267@reddit
Someone renamed it to Downtown Buda Homes Relax Shithole ("szarkupac") on Google :D
reptileshrine@reddit (OP)
No way, hahahaha...! I can't find it, but I'm laughing my ass off.
Mobile_Foundation267@reddit
My god, bedbugs... this place should be burned

Oh my god reading reviews should not be this fun. Every single one is a nightmare description! I’d love to see the bitchy comments the owners left in response to all of them.
reptileshrine@reddit (OP)
Hahaha, I'm glad at least something positive came out of this. Now I'm on a mission to spread the word like wildfire so the place burns to the ground (either figuratively or literally, haha!). Support the campaign!
Xiaodisan@reddit
I'm sorry you had that experience, I don't wish that on anybody especially when they're trying to enjoy themselves while on vacation.
Fortunately the owner accuses every second/third review with lying, so I don't think people will believe them over all the reviews.
numanuma_@reddit
3.9 rating 🫠
-_-______-_-___8@reddit
My parents do booking and that take these things very seriously. If you would have stayed at an other hotel for that night the owners are obligated to compensate you for it (since they locked you out for no reason)
reptileshrine@reddit (OP)
As someone else pointed out, I should've known better reading reviews before; still no one deserves to be treated this way, sp. with misleading and blatant lies afterwards. Lesson learned. Hoping your parents and family the best. Cheers!
Then_Tomorrow8738@reddit
I’m sorry you are being victim blamed here. But sharing your story will definitely help others.
No-Management1820@reddit
It's sad and I feel sorry for you, but this accommodation has very low scores, so it should have been a warning sign. I hope it doesn't take your mood away from travelling and I hope despite the bad experience of the accommodation you made good memories.
reptileshrine@reddit (OP)
Thanks for the kind words. I agree wholeheartedly, and should've known better — from now on I will do my homework. Cheers!
Working-Level-2041@reddit
They are rated 1.6 on google. If you want to go super cheap, book a hostel next time.
Reasonable_Visual_89@reddit
First rule of Booking: for anything decent, do NOT book below 7-7.50. Or if you want to be more sure, below 8.00
I would never book anything rated as low as 3.9. That's a guarantee that it is shitty.
DataNerdling@reddit
don't book anything under a 7 on booking.com
and what do you expect for 20 euros/njght?
reptileshrine@reddit (OP)
Lesson learned, indeed.
You2Row@reddit
Share this story with booking as well. I'm not sure they'll do anything but maybe. Can you leave a review on the site? If yes go for it and don't hold back. I'm really sorry this happened to you.
reptileshrine@reddit (OP)
Sure I did, but thanks for the recommendation. That's where these lowlifes replied to my post with blatant lies. I contacted Booking in order to review it, and read our chat in hopes of clearing up the situation (there they'd find out I was trying to communicate in perfect, fluent, non-drunken English and the awful excuses they put out). I got notice I was about to get refunded, but the message disappeared after a week and I didn't receive a cent — honestly, I don't care about the money, it's just that I feel helpless and scammed, and I want the truth to be told so no one else takes the bait. Cheers!
