Is it awkward getting naked at the Korean spa as a woman?

27F , I'm planning for visiting King spa next week for relaxation but I heard that you have to get fully naked in korean spas .I am not very comfortable with nudity as I am Indian but I am still thinking about visiting , Is it uncomfortable or awkward sitting in the jacuzzi or a steam room full of other naked women? Is it considered unhygienic if I visit without shaving my pubic hair?
bluejeane@reddit
It's never been awkward, and I've been going to King Spa for 8+ years now. I have motorcycle accident injuries and the intense heat from the rooms and the spas relax everything, and really help with hypertension (if you're well hydrated). I've never seen or experienced any issue. It's a beautiful place full of diversity, women that will respect your space, and some are open to chat. If you wish to keep to yourself, no one pressures you to socialize. Go and see for yourself, you may be the coolest person among your friends to share the experience with others if you enjoy it.

I went a few years ago and also felt a bit self conscious so I left just my undies on. They were nude color, almost skin color. Didn’t think it was a big deal. But after just a few minutes an attendant came over and told me I had to take them off. It felt awkward for the first few minutes, but then I got used to it and didn’t bother me anymore.

To be honest, I don’t remember as this was a few years ago. The majority (over 95%) were East Asian/Korean (I think) and my friend and I were not, so we stood out a little. But honestly (unless we were completely oblivious to it), no one seemed to care or stare or anything like that.
jelikattebayo@reddit
I went with my friend and we enjoyed the spas fully and completely naked. We were there to relax, not judge. Phones obvs are def not allowed in. If you do see someone with one report it to management immediately. Even if people are disruptive, report it! If it helps, nobody cares. Embrace your body. All are different shapes and sizes and it's a blessing to have a mobile and able body. Go get your much-needed relaxation!! ♡♡♡♡

I did but they were on the way out. Sometimes I see some go straight for the non-nude swimming pool for all to use.

King Spa is awesome and no one cares or is looking at your nakedness.. we’re all naked! lol But remember, you MUST take a shower (which are in the wet spa area) before getting in the “hot tubs” or cold plunge pool. Don’t make that mistake, being yelled at in Korean isn’t fun. ;)

Nudity is liberating and freeing. Like Nike, Just Do It! Enjoy the views and the energy and keep your public hair 💯
Fit-Somewhere281@reddit
I don't get the hygienic part, do you think your swimsuit is some kind of shield that keeps water from touching and washing out your private areas?
LaoTzu47@reddit
I understand a bit, I’m a heavy set guy and went to Spa Castle. But every other guy was nude in the locker room area. All the shapes and all the sizes and ALL THE HAIR.
But it was relaxing. No lie. I love Spa Castle.
Misaiato@reddit
I married a Japanese woman so public bathing is one of the most normalized things I adjusted to while living in Japan. We found King Spa and Spa Castle here in Dallas and were delighted. Men and women are separate of course, she says it’s basically the same as Japan with a lot more non-Asian people 😂
On the men’s side, I sort of get the sense it’s a hang out for gay dudes, but that type of bath house is common in Japan too. No one has ever bothered me.
These are Korean owned and operated, but I’ve been to bath houses all over Japan and these are basically the same thing, just a bit westernized (Spa Castle more so than King Spa).
I’m sure you can simply take the small towel and cover yourself while you walk between the baths, guys sometimes do that too. But you go into the bath itself naked. There will be a bunch of other ladies on your side, and they’ve all got the same parts. It doesn’t matter. They don’t care.
When you go to the sauna parts you’ll have some pajama type clothes they will give you. Everyone wears the uniform. It’s for hygiene. They know their kit is clean.
You might be a bit tense for the first 10 minutes, but seriously, it’s not weird or sexualized or anything strange. It’s just bathing, and nudity is really quite banal once you get out of your head.
I’ve been in mixed men and women’s baths in Germany - nudity is just… normal. No one cares. It’s not a place for anything indecent, and after 20 years of going as an adult, I have never once ever had an issue in any country, in any facility.
Unexpectedstickbug@reddit
I’m thinking of going to either King and Castle for the first time but the recent reviews for both are pretty negative and say that are run down and dirty. I’m extra paranoid since a pedicure gave me MRSA and toenail fungus years ago (treated and cured now).
Have you been to either in the past several weeks? Are they truly run down or are they just not super fancy? Which one would you recommend for a paranoid first timer?
Misaiato@reddit
Not past several weeks, but over the ten years we’ve lived here - many times. I think they’re “normal”
Meaning not outstanding and glittering and brand new, but nothing is. It’s a lot of water and humidity and heat and those have an effect on materials and the environment. I don’t think it’s filthy or dirty. Just - used. It was made to be used and people use it.
Unexpectedstickbug@reddit
Thanks for the insight! It’s super helpful. Normal is perfect 😊
SolarCurve@reddit
I've been to both, many times over the years and both have always been clean with no signs of mold or anything dirty. It's hot, humid, and wet but felt clean and sanitary in every occasion and area.

I have seen every group represented.
lovelylotuseater@reddit
I think a good phrase for them may be “unassuming” they’re kept clean but they’re not perfect sparkling layers of perfection. Just as with one’s home, sometimes things are repaired rather than replaced.
For reference, I have been to more pristine ones, but have found I prefer the function over form that King Spa offers. My biggest critique of them is that the women’s uniforms are kind of shabby. They used to be the men’s uniforms, but the orange was shifted to women and the men got the new grey uniforms, and frankly the orange ones are due for retirement. I understand it’s a big investment, and only really affects people who are interested in the sauna portion rather than the bathing area or the water park, but it’s time.
AgeUnusual8553@reddit (OP)
Thanks, do you usually see Indians there?
lovelylotuseater@reddit
I haven’t noticed, but full disclosure, I very rarely pay much attention to the other people there. I’ve seen some ladies with the right complexion, but haven’t examined anyone’s features closely enough to guess that precisely at their ethnicity.
OnPaperImLazy@reddit
I in general think the people who say these places are dirty are maybe a little on the hyper-freaked-about-cleanliness side. These are normal places with normal use and wear and tear but I've never thought of King Spa as run down or dirty. I've been in the last couple of months.
Are you paranoid about nudity or filth? If you don't like to touch what other human bodies have touched, then you probably won't like it. My sister is like this and she won't go. She thinks everyone else's bodies are suspect. She can barely stand gyms for the same reason.
fadedblackleggings@reddit
The reports online aren't just about cleanliness, but also weird vibes. Just seems strange. I've been multiple times without issues, but would like to know if something has really changed at the KSpas recently.
AgeUnusual8553@reddit (OP)
Thanks, do you usually see Indians there?
fadedblackleggings@reddit
Not sure, but I wouldn't worry about it.
Honestly, I don't find myself noticing the ethnicities of people there, because everyone is just wearing the uniforms. There is steam, etc, and things just blur.
If you are concerned about going solo, you can always bring a female friend.
OnPaperImLazy@reddit
I haven't had weird vibes, and I'm a middle-aged woman. The weird vibes may depend on your gender and age unfortunately. Once you become a middle-aged woman no one really notices you, which is a mixed blessing, to move through the world invisible.
Unexpectedstickbug@reddit
Omg yes. What a relief.
Unexpectedstickbug@reddit
Thanks! I’m heavy on the disinfectant at the gym but otherwise fine. Getting both MRSA and toe fungus from a pedicure (my first and last) was awful. I read that you can’t wear shower shoes or flip flops at the spa. So I guess my main concern is having no barrier between my feet and bacteria/fungus on the floor.
Scooterboi85@reddit
you can wear socks in the mixed saunas. Just need to be barefoot if you plan to use the bathhouse portion.
lilbatgrl@reddit
I find King Spa to be more consistently clean. They're constantly cleaning. Spa Castle can sometimes be nice and sometimes be a total mess. I strongly prefer King Spa at this point, been going to both for years.
Unexpectedstickbug@reddit
Thanks, this is helpful!
signorepoopybutthole@reddit
they absolutely are but no one will bother you if you just keep to yourself
lovelylotuseater@reddit
That’s so odd to me, as we have a gay bathouse in Dallas and it costs way less than King Spa.
dm_me_cute_puppers@reddit
Yeah, it kind of pisses me off as a gay man. It's a family place that I see kids in, and if you want to go do that stuff go to the place we have dedicated for it.

localgardengirl@reddit
Yes girl! I was just there today & there was an array of different races. It is a very diverse atmosphere. I had a brief chat with a nice Indian woman from the Austin area actually. Also to circle back to your original post, nobody cares about a bush. I actually don’t think I’ve seen a single shaved puss since I’ve been going, and even if I did it wouldn’t matter. Be brave & pull the trigger - it is a great time! I think more people should end their days there.
AgeUnusual8553@reddit (OP)
Nice to hear that, what were you chatting about with her in the spa ? Was she comfortable with nudity? If you can remember how many people were present there at that time?
TheCookalicious@reddit
No. It seems like it would but you get so comfortable immediately when you realize that no one cares. No need to shave. Just shower and you’re good.
LanaDelGay4242@reddit
They have shower areas to use before you enter the pools so everyone is "hygienic" when entering. Being naked around other also naked women is freeing to me, but I guess it all depends on your personal comfortability. After a few minutes however, I reckon you will get comfortable as you realize you all are there doing the same things. Perhaps you'll even marvel at the variety of female human bodies. Definitely don't let nudity shyness keep you from experiencing a Korean spa
RunJazzLike1985@reddit
This was my experience as well. I felt way more comfortable and confident being naked in the spa locker room than I ever did just changing clothes at the gym. There are so many bodies of all shapes and sizes. You don't feel like there are eyes on you, just a come as you are communal space. It was eye-opening and empowering for me.
Empty-Project6714@reddit
I went and personally felt it very freeing - until - my future daughter in-law was totally intimidated about it and it caused a lot of tension. Thank goodness that was 4 years ago and all is good now. But we won't be going to a Korean spa together again.

I didn’t find it awkward at all. I went with a guy friend so I was on my own in the ladies’ spa area and it really wasn’t a big deal whatsoever - just a bunch of naked ladies not paying any attention to each other. If it really bothers you though, just stay out of the hot tubs, keep a swimsuit with you, or stay mostly in the clothed areas.

I haven’t really paid much attention to the ethnicities of folks, and Indian can go two ways (I’m the type I think you don’t mean, of native rather than Asian descent). There was a mix of all types of people as far as I noticed and I wouldn’t expect you to stand out in a bad way or anything.
faeriechyld@reddit
I don't find it awkward but my mom raised me with no modesty lol.
But no one cares. The other women are there for their own business, not to judge you. The only time I find myself looking at someone in the spa is bc I'm fascinated by their tattoo(s).

It's typically about as diverse at the spa as Dallas is. So I'm sure I've seen some Indian women there but don't have any specific memories either.
Moist_Ad7801@reddit
I’m 30F Black and fat, and hang out in the nude area. I never felt watched or uncomfortable, unless someone in the area is acting uncomfortable. You know why you’re there I know why I’m there. This is your time.

I have seen a couple brown women in the nude area usually women around my age. Every time I go there’s been no more than 6-8 nude ppl in the area most people go upstairs or to the pools. It’s never busy or over crowded and most of the time peope are either in groups of 2-3 or by themselves/usuals probs.
Moist_Ad7801@reddit
But over all I don’t see many Brown women in that spa unless they’re in a group and they aren’t in the nude area at all.
straightphobic@reddit
It will be awkward at first, but everyone is naked! No one stares, so you'll be fine. There's a shower area to clean yourself, and it's mandatory to shower before bathing. You can change in the bathroom stalls if you want privacy, and you can always decide not to hit the bathing pools if nudity freaks you out. There are so many saunas in King Spa/Spa Castle that you'll still get your money's worth.
AgeUnusual8553@reddit (OP)

I've seen a couple brown people. It's not all Koreans; a lot of black women and European women also go there. Spa Castle has more appeal outside of Koreans, but both have been gaining popularity outside of the Dallas Korean population.
matchstick64@reddit
Not at all. Everything is separated.
OnPaperImLazy@reddit
I'm a few decades older and no it's not awkward. There are all ages - I've seen toddlers in the all-naked area, young girls, and I've seen elderly women in their 70's/80's. It's multi-racial. There are all levels of bush, all sizes of boobs, thin women, fat women, and everything else.
The naked area is only one small part and you don't have to partake in it if you don't want to. You can experience a lot of the spa without doing the naked area. Take a swimsuit for the pool areas.
If you want to check it out on a not very busy day, take off work and go mid-morning.

It’s not bad at all! Just know it’s usually policy to shower before getting in the hot tubs or steam rooms, so it doesn’t feel unhygienic. I take a lot of friends to Kingspa who are anxious and say “I’m not getting naked”. I tell them that they won’t have to and there are a ton of hot tubs that are mixed that you wear a suit in.
After a couple of hours relaxing they feel totally comfortable and always want to go in the naked bit! It is very dark and cosy and you don’t feel exposed.

Yes, I see all races there and all kinds of swimsuits. You can dress modest, I had a friend that wore a tank top and leggings or you can wear a string bikini.
I don’t shave my pubic hair and I don’t really notice if other people have or not.
I did have a friend too shy to change in the changing room with everyone and she just went into a toilet cubicle and changed in there instead. So that is an option for you.

How do the scrub downs / massages work in the locker rooms? I went sometime last year for the first time and saw other ladies getting scrubbed and massaged in the locker room. I wanted one too but didn't know who to ask or how etc
MisunderstoodPenguin@reddit
My wife and I love visiting spa castle, it's one of our getaways that lets us reminisce about visiting an onsen in japan where we got engaged. However, of the dozen or so times we've visited, ONE TIME, someone from a bachelorette party or some other group of women, commented on my wife being naked in a negative way. It really fucked her up since she had very recently had our baby and was still dealing with PPD, and we didn't return for a number of months. However, that has only happened once, and there are of course hundreds of other female encounters that haven't been this way, so your odds are pretty good.
Unexpectedstickbug@reddit
Holy shit. I’m so sorry that happened and am glad she finally went back. Your wife is one strong mama! 💪

You are perfect the way you are. The nude only area tbh is the best part of the sauna in my opinion. Before you go in there, you have take a quick shower to rinse off the outside and then dip into the pool. No one should be judging anyone. It didnt happen to me when I went. But if it makes you more comfortable, you can wrap yourself in a towel.
Also, go to the Komart nearby and buy a ticket from there, it's I think 20 bucks cheaper then going in.
Like everyone else said there are other rooms where you are clothed but they dry rooms. Or the huge pool where you need a swimsuit.
I hope you get to relax and enjoy yourself!

I did! The lady who was made uncomfortable by my nudity was Indian lol but when I went there weren’t too many people, I’d say no more than 10 people in the nude area, this was at Spa Castle. In the mixed areas I saw more Indians. It was a pretty racially diverse place.
AgeUnusual8553@reddit (OP)
I see, how did she made you uncomfortable? Was she wearing swimsuits inside?
listenintofuture@reddit
No she didn’t make me uncomfortable! I sensed that I made her uncomfortable because we were in the steam room she had on a towel I entered and took mine off I saw her cover her eyes and leave lol so that is ultimately my assumption that she was uncomfortable, she didn’t say anything or disrupt my experience though
AgeUnusual8553@reddit (OP)
Yes, I can get that, actually most Indians like me come from a conservative society where nudity is seen as a taboo , so we're a bit uncomfortable with it 😅.
Did she dip in the cold/hot pool ?
listenintofuture@reddit
Ok that makes sense! For a minute I felt bad that I ran her off but we weren’t sitting anywhere that’d we have to look at each other. The same way you avert your gaze as not to stare at people, they do the same!
I didn’t see her after she took off!
West-Sink7301@reddit
I went last year and was worried about this too. I never had to get naked. There is one area that is nude only and you'll see nude people in the locker room, but they give you shorts and a shirt to wear in the saunas, and you wear a regular swimsuit in the big pool.
moving_waves@reddit
This is the answer. There are separate naked areas for men and women, but also a large, clothed communal area in and outside for men and women together. You can still have a great time at the spa without going into the nude area

IF you're considering King Spa.l.
There four areas:
- Male only (nude), - Female only (nude), - Mixed (you wear clothes the spa gives you) - pool area (swimwear required).
The nude areas are mostly hot and cold jacuzzi pools. Steam rooms. As well as grooming areas which are a line of mirros where people wash and groom themselves naked.
The Mixed areas are your dry saunas, eating, movie watching sofas, couches, napping rooms.
The pool is as it sounds a large pool area where you're required to wear
As a dude there are bushy dudes in the male area. Everyone is required to give themselves a good rinse before entering the nude area.
It takes a few visits to get over being nude.

I go to king spa and I don’t do it at all. Technically you should, but I don’t ever go and I usually go anyway after just having showered at home. Both times I’ve been I was on my period and did not want to partake so I just changed into the clothes they provided and started hitting the rooms. And no one has told on me for not doing it the “proper” way.
eggroll0118@reddit
But to answer your question, nobody cares, nobody will care. You’ll see every sort of body time and body hair there, it will desensitize you quickly in the locker rooms. Do it if you want, but you technically don’t have to if you don’t feel comfortable. At king spa at least!

Nope! No one gawks at all, I was also so weird and shy about it at first. You’ll see - everyone minds there business and it’s a relaxing experience.

Just a vote to say I love king spa! It was also my first nude experience and I found it very comfortable.

The place is just crap these days is the only thing I worry about. I can say at one time it was nice.
AgeUnusual8553@reddit (OP)
Why ?
MrsPatty60@reddit
Dirty nasty things worn out. We visited a few weeks ago. The pools were so nasty with hair floating all over. The water cloudy. Half of the rooms closed down. Chairs all ripped. Food was just trash. We used to visit often and it was never like that. Also hardly any workers going around cleaning like they used to.

Did the KSpa run a Groupon or something? LIke the reviews online for all of them are terrible lately.
listenintofuture@reddit
I also had a pretty poor experience at Spa Castle. I got a K-scrub and it was so rough it scabbed my skin. (I’ve had them several times before with no issue. They agreed to refund me though) I found out that it had just gone viral on TikTok when I went, so there were a lot of people and a lot who didn’t really care about the rules. In areas you’re supposed to be barefoot they were wearing outdoor shoes, in quiet meditation spaces they were loud and joking or making videos on how hot it was; it made it difficult for me to relax. I also remember the pool water being a little dingy/having an oil film to it and a couple of the areas shut down completely. This was just my experience about a year and a half ago, they may have changed. I also went on a Friday, during the week is probably a little calmer!
fadedblackleggings@reddit
Ah, when did the KSpa go virral on TikTok? Could explain the terrible reviews and ridiculous levels of filth.
kluda06@reddit
In the locker room, you'll have lockers and another room that leads to the hot tubs (just for women). This is the part they want you to be nude. No one cares. Just wraps a towel around you, shower before getting in, put your towel somewhere away and get in. Be sure to bring a hair clip or tie. They don't want your hair touch for some reason. I've done this many time and actually have brought friends, they have said the same thing how no one cares and you're not looking at your friends either. Hope it helps!
Btw once im done with the hot tubs, I rinse myself off and put on my uniform they give me. I wear either a tank top or sport bra. I like to wear no bra to these so im relaxed in the saunas.

No it isn't awkward because nobody is worried about anything or anybody. You go in there with the mindset that everyone is doing the same thing!

No, not really. At first it's a bit wild but they you come to appreciate this freedom. I think seeing bodies of shapes and sizes, with hair, no hair, cellulite, rolls and all makes me love all our differences even more.

Nope. And that place is great. If you're going where I think you are, there is also a decent sushi restaurant across the street that has all you can eat for after the spa. Have fun!

lol I actually went to king spa with my mom when I was around 13/14. it can be very awkward and scary at first but like once you go in, 90% of the time it's a bunch of older Korean women and they don't care at all. it makes it much easier to kinda forget about it and relax when you get rid of the idea of people judging you. Also the nudity is only in the bathhouse area which you do at the very beginning before you go into the rest of the spa, they'll give you shorts and a shirt after!

It's awkward the first time but if you wear glasses like me then as soon as you take the lenses off it helps with the embarrassment not being able to see clearly. Plus everyone else is trying to mind their business which made me feel more comfortable about my body. It's something you can get used to.

You shower first before going in the pools. The hair that denotes you as mammalian is not dirty, it's human.
No one cares, they're there to relax.

Onionringlets3@reddit
No, but it may just be because of the locale, I'm not sure there's that many Indians near Royal and 35, Castle Spa in Carrollton may see more, but I haven't been there in yrs.
Don't let that keep you from trying something new! 😀
Kitten3000safe@reddit
Are there any newer spas like this near Frisco?
EtchASketchNovelist@reddit
Seems similar to getting naked in the changing room at the gym. Nobody cares.
VirginityGenie@reddit
31M here. Went for the first time in January. Was definitely uncomfortable at first but, as mentioned, no one cared. Definitely recommend. King Spa is great.
SinlessTitan@reddit
Spa castle on the mens side was full of creepy old ass dudes when I went there with my group of friends in highschool. I was like 15 at the time. As an adult on the womans side im sure it will be just fine though
MrsPatty60@reddit
Has not changed.
beccasueiloveyou@reddit
It can be awkward if it's your first time in a locker room setting. The first couple of times I went to Spa Castle, I skipped the women's bathhouse and just used the showers to courtesy wash before going to the co-ed pools in my swim suit.
If you do use the bathhouse pools, pubic hair is completely normal. Being naked in the locker room/bathhouse becomes easier over time. I believe it has helped with my own body acceptance. There were so many different bodies in the lockers, I've learned that a little extra hair or jiggle is very common.
I hope you enjoy your time at the spa! I take a 5 hour drive to the Dallas area several times a year for weekend retreats, and it has healed my soul. I'm absolutely addicted. Also, Carrollton has some really great shopping and restaurants. Don't forget to do some karaoke before you leave town!

I don't think ive noticed any Indians at either king or castle. Ive mostly seen white, black, and Korean/east Asian. Now that I think of it, I don't recall seeing many Hispanic people. I'm sure there are both Indian and Hispanic patrons, i just don't recall ATM.
zink1stdef@reddit
Spa Castle is too expensive now & there are less amenities then even a year ago.

If you feel like you have to get naked and you are not comfortable with that? ... then you should not do it, no matter how people respond here.
Barbiedawl83@reddit
I agree with this. Some people aren’t comfortable with nudity even though it’s normal in this setting. I went to blue lagoon in Iceland and you have to shower naked before entering the springs. I wore my shirt and panties to the shower which had a door and changed into my suit after showering. It would have been socially acceptable to be nude in the locker room but I wouldn’t be comfortable. Other hot springs in Iceland don’t have shower doors and you have to shower nude prior to entering. I wouldn’t be comfortable with that so I wouldn’t have gone. Being nude in an acceptable environment is ok as is not being comfortable with being nude in those environments.
Illustrious-Ad5575@reddit
Thank you. According to almost everyone else, you are forced to be naked, or you are kicked out.
cluelessinlove753@reddit
Then you also shouldn’t go to the areas where clothes are prohibited. It’s considered rude and unhygienic.
Illustrious-Ad5575@reddit
Lol.
cluelessinlove753@reddit
Not sure what’s comical. Similar etiquette applies at most Korean spas, Japanese onsens, Russian baths, Turkish/Moroccan hamams, Nordic saunas, etc…
No one is required to go. But if you do go, you should certainly respect the customs/culture/rules. There are lots of spaces at a Korean spa where robes, bath attire, or swim attire are accepted/required. There’s no shame in sticking to those and avoiding the nude bathhouse portion.
If I’m not comfortable being quiet in a library, is it OK for me to yell? If I don’t feel like scrubbing my hands before entering a NICU, is it OK for me to skip? What about wearing a profane T-shirt inside an elementary school? What about wearing shoes into a religious temple that prohibits them?
Basement_Chicken@reddit
There's so much chlorine in those pools that you'll be crying even after being near them, let alone swimming there.
