Seat will be $1000 to get recovered. A needle and thread was $8

Looks horrible but it will get me by until I can get a new seat. No way I'm going to pay $1000 to get it covered with a fabric that's not original. Anybody got some seats that will fit in a FC RX7?

"don't get it right, just get it running" David Frieburger.
LeperFriend@reddit
If it was Frieburgers he'd throw a truck stop souvenir Navajo blanket on the seat and call it mint!
Dry-Apartment7271@reddit
As would most people!
the seats and fabric in the FC were atrocious Who gives a shit about original fabric? I'd be looking to modify the rails of a much nicer/newer seat (BRZ/350/370/RX8 with the Dorito cutout in the headrest)
oztrailrunner@reddit
Without even stitching it up lol. I'm taking his approach to my e34 project. Minor rust repairs done, but don't have the colour matched paint? Who gives a shit. This bits now black.
Steering wheel falling apart? It's getting wrapped!
Seats are shit and leather falling off in chunks? Well, seat covers are on order and in looking for literally any seat in any colour.
I don't care. Just be legal to drive and I'll fix it over the coming years.
surewriting_@reddit
Recaro and VAC make seat bracket adapters for the weird e34 front hook setup.
Then you can run whatever aftermarket seat of your choice in it.
oztrailrunner@reddit
I would love that, but where I live that requires an engineering inspection, certificate and mod plate on my car. More hassle and expense .
StingMachine@reddit
Maybe just don’t mention it to anyone?
oztrailrunner@reddit
We have to do annual checks here, and if you have a safety modification (which seats fall under here) without engineer inspection, your insurance is voided. So if I crash and make a claim and it's found, im on my own.
DumberThanIThink@reddit
Maybe you should leave that place?
oztrailrunner@reddit
Lol yeah so many positives of living here. I CAN do these mods. I just can't justify the expense.
We have plenty of options, but as always, it comes at a cost.
Squidking1000@reddit
Glad I don't live wherever that is. I put BMW E90 seats in my old GTO, got three point belts and full power control including lumbar support for like $400 Canadian. Also changed suspension, brakes, steering, wheels and tires, motor, transmission and rear end, no inspections required!
SeniorSpoonio@reddit
Exactly what I did on my 50 chev 😁
xiaodown@reddit
Perfect. No notes, absolutely perfect.
Nathan_reynolds@reddit
Im not sure that man realizes hes now a god father of american car culture. He always post about the legends of his time but that man got hundreds of thousand of teenagers and young adults to get off their asses and build shit boxes into moving death traps and for that he will always be a hero for the community.
kingbain@reddit
Confirming the "mint" :)
placebodyhere@reddit
Those should be flip flops not crocs.
synchronoussavagery@reddit
Crocs are superior. Especially if you get cheap ones. Cheap “crocs” will still last for just as long as name brand. Slips, on the other hand might fall apart no matter what you spend on them, and cheap ones could be gone in a week.
the_fools_brood@reddit
Buy one at pull a part. Might find a decent seat for 35 to 50 bucks. I found some vw recaros once and snatched them up just because I knew what they were and sold them later for good profit
crankshaft123@reddit
Not everyone has a U-pull-it type of yard near them. The closest one to me is over an hour away and they only stock relatively late model cars and trucks.
ashkiller14@reddit
Man, closest one to me was 2 hours and you bet your ass im driving 2 hours over spending 1k on a seat
fatitalianstallion@reddit
It’s not that much tho. Katskins are less than half that per seat for leather, and installed.
crankshaft123@reddit
A replacement cover won’t help you much if your existing seat has blown out foam or broken springs.
Threewisemonkey@reddit
You mean driving 4 hours
That said, LKQ ships nationally from their yards, and you can set alerts in the app for any make, model, year and get alerts when one hits a nearby yard. Most good stuff goes quickly.
I hate LKQ for being a private equity monopoly gobbling up all the independent scrap yards, but you gotta take what you can get. It’s not like Gen Z is going to take over gramps’ junkyard.
cyprinidont@reddit
The one near me got bought out by a national parts seller and they shut down the U-Pull.now you have to call ahead and do the whole Oreillys "what year, make, model?" And they will pull the part for you without even getting to look at it. Fucking sucks.
ShidOnABrick@reddit
Thats not gonna last long, shoulda blind stitched new material to the intact fabric to cover over the old leather bottom and would look mint
Artistic_Bit_4665@reddit
Who sewed that, Hellen Keller?
QuotePapa@reddit
So it's $1,000 to recover. From where?
YOUTUBEFREEKYOYO@reddit
The threads are too l9ng to offer much in structural integrity, I'm curious to see how long they last
IronSlanginRed@reddit
I mean if you hadn't punched a bunch of holes in the vinyl ..
So you should watch some YouTube tutorial on mending jeans and use a hidden stich instead. Then it would be looking like new.
Or every car dealership knows an old retired guy that stitches seats and repairs vinyl for under $100.
GarpRules@reddit
10 minutes on YouTube to learn how to stitch properly is $0.
Another_Slut_Dragon@reddit
Glue a strip of fabric over top of the repair using E6000. You can make the edges look nice by folding them back and gluing them before you install it.
Do the same trim strip on every seat and no one will be the wiser.

Mr fancy is too good for duck tape
ridiculusvermiculous@reddit
hell yeah
also, this is what mexican blankets are for
Im_not_bot123@reddit
Tbh i would reinforce with masking tape. It already looks like this so what’s masking tape gonna add to the equation
News_without_Words@reddit
Get a sewing machine and order some matching fabric. If I can learn upholstery, anyone can. Holding up perfectly in my E30
RDMLCrunch@reddit
Thumbnail made it look like a burnt hand with stitches in it
ShaggysGTI@reddit
I’d be so impressed if I saw that in the junkyard.
RepublicDependent655@reddit
Looks like something done with a Nintendo Wii controller

that's character!
AverageFoxNewsViewer@reddit
You should ask for advice on this on /r/Visiblemending
TheDunk67@reddit
Less than half that for both here. I bet you could find reproductions for less, that was just the first search result.

0_1_1_2_3_5@reddit
An upholstery guy could fix it for $200ish and it would look 100x better. I had a leather panel replaced in my M5 seat and it cost me $150.
realsalmineo@reddit
You got what you paid for. Congratulations.
roadrussian@reddit
For fucks sake, you could've at least used color matching thread you monster!
dajohnnyboy@reddit
You can get new seat covers from different places. Lseat has leather covers for $350, racing beat has options for velour or tweed for $530. Obviously more expensive than some thread but one day you might want to fix it better.
SevenCatCircus@reddit
You didn't have to pay $1000 but you didn't have to make it look like ass either
lamsndbhaujamjsshukd@reddit
Looks horrible, but it's sure as heck better than spending 1k. I was gonna get my seats in my car done but they wanted $750 for the two seats. I went to the junk yard and found two seats in excellent condition for $70 for both.
Threewisemonkey@reddit
If you’re going to do it yourself, do it at least somewhat properly. You were going to get charged $1k not for a recover, but basically to completely rebuild the oem seat from scratch - new foam, cleaned and lubed rails, and a seat cover cut from multiple fabrics, sewn together properly from the inside, then stretched and hooked in place. It’s a pretty big job if you can’t buy covers and seat pads off the shelf like you can for a classic Chevy.
Here is a leather seat cover that could be stretched over your frame and pads for $350 and you get to choose the color
There’s a few others if you search online. Much easier for a shop to cut or steam refresh foam and install a premade cover than sewing from scratch.
Gostaverling@reddit
I don’t know diddly squat about sewing, but I believe the stitch you used is probably one of the worst for this application. They are not locked in so once one breaks the whole thing fails. It may work for a bit, but when it goes it will go all the way. Still better than $1000.
standardtissue@reddit
It was only 15 seconds of labor, I'm sure he won't mind doing the job over.
deevil_knievel@reddit
Should have watched a 15 second video on YouTube and spent a whopping 30 minutes and it would actually look pretty decent.
standardtissue@reddit
At least now the car seat's ready for Halloween.
BillyJackO@reddit
The Crocs say it all.
Burntzombies@reddit
I respect this but also, christ mate watch a sewing video you clearly can do it so go find some nice lady to tell you the *right* way to do it and you'll be sailing
Real_FakeName@reddit
Instead of getting it reupholstered you can get a whole seat on eBay for $400
MrManSir1974@reddit

heroinebob90@reddit
DIY.
bluenosesutherland@reddit
I would have used staples
espeero@reddit
You misspelled duct tape
Silkychar@reddit
First option I would recommend is looking at car-part.com and seeing if there is a dismantler within driving distance with an rx7 seat.
Second, if youre local to the SF bay area, there is a set of MINT burgundy leather RX7 seats on FB marketplace, hasnt sold in over a month, bet you could lowball pretty hard for them.
dicrydin@reddit
Dude, buy a seat cover. $50 on Amazon. https://a.co/d/gvXzE7v
ECSJay@reddit
Didn’t wanna take a little time to get the stitching somewhat even? lol
Sorry to be a critical asshole
alex053@reddit
What’s a good price? I need the seat in my caddy redone but it’s got multiple colors and materials and an arm rest
ActionHour8440@reddit
Bench seats are a lot less labor intensive. So not. $1000 but it’s still most of a day’s work for a journeyman upholsterer if you’re looking at pattern, cut and sew, plus materials.
Cheaper option is to see if a premade kit exists and then have it professionally installed.
alex053@reddit
There’s not a lot of parts like that for a 1957 Cadillac. They do make the cloth. Just need to find the correct pink leather
ActionHour8440@reddit
Leather is very expensive. Vinyl is cheap and imo almost as good except for it getting super hot in the sun.
I worked in an auto upholstery shop for most of a decade but it was so long ago I couldn’t ballpark current prices with any degree of accuracy.
However $1000 for a top quality cut and sew (made from scratch) bucket seat isn’t a crazy price.
BeerJedi-1269@reddit
My Pa JUST sewed an old leg from jeans on the edge of his trucks seat!

"It's Frank-en-STEEN!"
audio_mekanik@reddit
I recognize those approx 87 rx7 seats. I got a used one from parts yard for passenger side. Took all apart and swapped rear foam/cover to drivers side.

Spray now paint the thread, good as new
Divisible_by_0@reddit
$1000 for a single seat? J E S U S
AndrewIsntCool@reddit
I could understand the cost if it's like a custom heated / ventilated seat from a reputable brand like Katzkin, but just for upholstery? Damn, that is a "fuck off" price lol
Divisible_by_0@reddit
I could do it for $400-500 a seat mostly because of the time it would take me to do it. But it also won't be $1000 seat quality because I dont do upholstery. I plan to redo my entire cars interior myself because I can't afford the $1000 a seat quality.
panopticon31@reddit
I'm guessing that was the "go away" price.
RedditPoster05@reddit
I hate when businesses do this. Just turn the work down and explain it. Like hey this is pricey. If you wanna have it done then go for it, but you could probably find better. I would just think less of a company if I found out, I got hosed Later on.
Guac_in_my_rarri@reddit
An electrician outfit gave me a go away price. Asked to quote 240v 50amp circuit for my welder and fix some cloth wiring. Gave me a 7k quote to run the 240 line, rewire my whole box and then 2k for the cloth wiring. A nother outfit ran the 240v circuit with total industrial install (water tight plug in), line, storage for the line, etc for $2200 with labor and materials. They're coming back out in the fall for the cloth wiring for $100 an hour and it should take 2 hours.
RedditPoster05@reddit
Same thing happened to me when I had my house painted and the wood siding around chimney replaced . One company quoted 9k. I live in a brick house . Not much wood. Just a lot of tape and trim. The guy actually beat the price for chimney it was 750 of that 9k replacement but I was so annoyed by the rest of the quote I just had it done with the other company at 5k all in.

Cheaper for race car seat
devilpants@reddit
My fc rx7 has a momo fixed back drivers seat I mounted to some modified stock seat rails. Don’t need a folding seat for a car with no rear seats. Brand new they are $500.
shizbox06@reddit
Agree with not paying $1000! I do think you could do some research and figure out the best stitch to use and take your time and try to do a better job. That's an interesting era-appropriate cloth if you could save it.
segelflugzeugdriver@reddit
Fuck yeah! Let Er rip! Good for you, drive it
Kombatrok@reddit
I bet you could buy an upholstery kit for an RX7 and recover both your seats for 5-600$
Electronic-Status379@reddit
you can reupholster yourself for around 200-300 and with time patients and a bit of money you’ll have a brand new seat
imfirealarmman@reddit
I mean, technique needs some refinement, but it’s not bad
BackgroundRecipe3164@reddit
You already have the needle, thread is cheap. You can redo this hundreds of times and still be in the green, I think you should do some practice, smaller stitches, different thread color, and you'll be on your way! Check out r/visiblemending r/sewing and r/myog
