Help identifying this H&R revolver

No clear markings notating the caliber. All there is to go off of is inscribed on top of the barrel and that reads as such: "Harrington & Richardson arms company. Worcester, mass. Usa pat. Oct 4 ' 87, may 14, & Aug. 6,'89, April 7, 1896"
I suspect it's a .32 Smith short. But I need to know if it's short, long, or black powder.

Given the shape of the cylinder notches, it's a black powder gun (and in remarkably condition, too).
The BP guns used notches that were basically triangles - nothing stops them from rotating back the other way. Part of the engineering change to accommodate the more powerful smokeless ammo was to add a rectangular notch to the triangular ramp, which holds everything together more securely.
Modern ammo won't cause it to explode, but it will rapidly hammer the gun and cause it to go out of time. Even though the peak pressure is low, the pressure wave comes on very quickly and they are not just not designed to handle that.
That's a really beautiful gun, and well over a century old. I wouldn't fire it at all.

I'm open to being persuaded here.
I'm sure it's not a hard and fast rule, and some of the old-design cylinders may have been used for some time until supplies were exhausted. But I can say for sure that this gun is lacking one of the main engineering changes to accommodate smokeless powder.

Fallout 3 reference

I believe that is the H&R Automatic Revolver. The Premier has horizontal slide stop notches in the cylinder that are not present in the Automatic Revolver.

Any idea how old it might be?
Strong-Review5880@reddit
Im gonna guess based on the quality on the plating and the cylinder cuts 1930s ish

They were made between 1896 and 1940. It might also be called the Top Break Auto Ejecting model 1, 2, or 3. The old ad I have for them just calls it the Automatic Revolver. I cant tell you anything beyond that. You'll probably have to google search looking for a list of the different versions of it vs what was written on the top/side of the barrel to try and narrow it down. H&R liked to change that wording on the top between versions.
