Upgrade Graphics card or Proccessor

Hello all, my PC is 6 years old and I'm looking to start replacing a component or two without breaking the bank.
The current set up is a Radeon RX 580 Graphics card. An AMD Ryzen 7 2700x 8 core with 16 GB of RAM 64 bit system
My aim is to be able to play Doom The Dark Ages and my current PC just can't run it. Now as I understand DOOM DA requires a card capable of ray tracing so I know I will need to upgrad it at some point.
However Google and reddit have made me aware that the 2700 is very much out of date and might be the better option to upgrade first. I have also noticed an increase in crashes, hangs and stuttering even in older games I'm hoping a new cpu will help with that.
Upgrading both is the best option but it's a very expensive one and I would prefer to only update one to current standards instead of both.
I am new to building computers and whatever knowledge I possess is insufficient to complete the task, there's so much out there that I get choice paralysis.
Thanks for the help.

Important question: what resolution is your monitor? Because better graphics cards beyond a certain level is pointless if your monitor can't do higher resolution and or frame rate.

CPU: 5600/5600X, or 5700X (NOT the 5700 non-X); if you can find a 5700X3D for less than $200 that can also be a good choice.
GPU: this is very dependent on budget, but the cheapest current-gen GPU I'd buy is a 9060 XT 16GB.

Thanks you very much man.

I second this rec. A 5700x3d/9060xt combo will be solid for a while.

5700x3d were going as cheap as $140 a year ago from aliexpress and if you can get under $200 still worth sticking with your current motherboard assuming it can take a 5700x3d. Also consider going up to 32gb of ram 3600 mhz cl18. For X3D the ram speed can matter a lot.
For gpu 9070xt or 5070ti if they’re in your budget or consider a used 3080 they run about $350-400 on eBay and are still very competitive and will be for the decade.

Depending on where you live I recommend you get a 5700X3D and an RX 9060XT or even 9070XT, if you find the 5700X3D for less than $250 go for it, anything above that might make AM5 more appealing Microcenter has good offers afaik, I'm not from the US though.
I got my AM5 combo for around $350 (7500F $120, 2X16GB 6000 C30 $75 and a B650 for $115), I bought the CPU from AliExpress, RAM from Amazon and the motherboard from a local store.

5800x or 5700x (whichever is cheaper). While most people would say X3D version, its as expensive as newer CPUs, and the extra performance against its normal side isn't that that big. And for the GPU, 5060/9060XT and higher will be more than enough (same applies on older gens).
With your budget, you can pretty much build a new PC. I suggest to look into bundles offers. Some days ago a guy posted that he got an i7 (or Ultra 7), motherboard and 32gb DDR5 for just 300 dollars (if I am not wrong).

1) do not buy any RX7000 gpu if you want to play latest Doom 2) like others said - get 5700x3d + 9070XT/5070Ti

You can get something this at Microcenter, AMD Ryzen 7 7700X, Gigabyte B650 Gaming X AX v2, G.Skill Flare X5 Series 32GB DDR5-6000 Kit, for about $350. A AMD Radeon RX 7600 XT Speedster SWFT210 Core Dual Fan 16GB GDDR6 is $350. There are some excellent CPU coolers for $25-30, 1 Tb M.2 SDD's are $ 50-65. That leaves you with enough for a good case. An 850-watt PSU is 110 to 129. Have fun with the new build!

Honestly, 9070xt + 5700x3d is the best combo without replacing anything else.

What's your budget?
HoodedLordN7@reddit (OP)
A grand or so
gauty001@reddit
Wait i forgot to ask, do you know what wattage your Power supply is?
HoodedLordN7@reddit (OP)
650 if I'm reading it right
gauty001@reddit
Nice, then you should definitely get a RX 7800 XT or RX 9070 XT 16GB, both are futureproof in terms of V-ram, so no problems for a while for you. And like some other guy said a Ryzen 5 5600 or 5700X would pair well with it, shouldn’t cost more than 750
HoodedLordN7@reddit (OP)
Thanks man.
gauty001@reddit
I’d say get an RX 7800 XT for ~500/550 and get a ryzen 7 5800X for 150-200 if you plan on staying on AM4 (Motherboard platform), if you want more space for upgrades in the future you could get a Ryzen 5 7500F, for the same price as the 5800X, but you’d need to switch the motherboard and ram too. See what fits you
secretagentstv@reddit
Lol. Upgrade your CPU to a 5600x/5700x3D and buy a 9070 XT. $1000 can buy you a whole new PC.
aragorn18@reddit
If you can only upgrade one, definitely do the GPU first. It will have a great impact in games.
The problems you described are unlikely to be fixed with a new CPU.
