We actually took action to reduce acid rain. Like the ozone. We actually did something about it.
Seven22am@reddit
Back when “care for the environment so it doesn’t kill us” wasn’t a partisan issue!
Ineedavodka2019@reddit
When did that change? Under Bush?
Seven22am@reddit
That’s my thought, yes. Al Gore became an environmental champion and negative partisanship (the tendency to oppose what your opponents favor, regardless of merits) kicked in. Of course there were always Christian fundamentalists and “pro-business” folks who opposed environmental care for their own reasons.

Kill the environment, before it kills YOU!
Brave_Gur7793@reddit
Oh, so mother nature needs a favor? Well, maybe she should have thought of that when she was besetting us with droughts and floods and poison monkeys.
CorgiMonsoon@reddit
And because it was actually successful brain dead idiots argue in bad faith about “see, it fixed itself and it was just an overhyped nothing, so therefore ‘global warming’ is also an overhyped nothing” while they actively ignore just why and how it “fixed itself”
a_soul_in_training@reddit
i've been calling this the 'vaccine effect'.
Frosty_Cloud_2888@reddit
Different Strokes taught me about acid rain, and Alf taught me about the ozone layer. Thanks TV.
wintertash@reddit
Acid rain was a real issue, but we as a society took concrete and successful steps to address it. This is as silly as insisting that Y2K or the hole in the ozone layer were nothing to worry about, rather than them bring dangerous problems that were solved through a great deal of work (and expenditure of money)
realauthormattjanak@reddit
It's okay to admit some panic wasn't justified.
Redux01@reddit
People like this ^ are why preventative measure are so hard to implement as a society. When they work, idiots say "see? We didn't need to worry".
realauthormattjanak@reddit
As opposed to "look at me y'all, my bumper sticker saved _!'"
MassiveMeatHammer@reddit
Y2K is still out there guys. Watching. Waiting. It'll come for us when we least expect it

This is going to be an interesting one. I know it's been planned for and isn't an issue with x64 systems, but there's bound to be a ton of ancient Linux systems out there that will shit the bed.
I imagine a lot of old embedded systems will implode.
Important stuff will probably have been taken care of, so it'll be things we don't even think of. Like the one machine responsible for cutting and sealing bags at the Dorito factory will just stop working and end up puking out a 900 foot long bag or some shit.
Apprehensive_Hat8986@reddit
Damnit. Now I want a 900' bag of Doritos!
And you're bang on. A lot of the services that had 32bit dates have already been updated during y2k. Open source projects have ¿all? been updated. But there are likely a few "odd duck" systems around, stable, quietly and happily trucking along one second at a time until 3:14:07...
Cue hollywood effects zooming in through circuits, tron/matrix-style to show bits incrementing towards our doom. 😱

Always watching

Acid rain. Drug addictions. International terrorism. Freeway killers.

Dammit came here to post this. Well done, Mr. Cross.

Acid rain and quicksand. And clowns in vans.
Heads up.
UtahItalian@reddit
I've encountered it a bunch in southern Utah. Slow moving water mixed with deep fine sand = quicksand. Too bad it doesn't work like in Princess Bride. You can definitely lose a shoe if you aren't careful though.
I once intentionally got stuck up to my waist just so we could practice getting folks out. Good times.
Kandlish@reddit
My college aged child was helping me clean my office at work the other day. They found a book from the 90s or early 2000s with so many references to clowns, and were quite confused by it.
I was pretty helpless to explain it. Your comment does not explain the clowns, but does suggest that it was not an isolated cultural reference point?
Beyond IT, I still can't explain this.
BoltsGuy02@reddit
Leave my van out of this… umm uhhhh errrr totally not a clown
ravage214@reddit
Quicksand.... that shit was god damned epidemic, people have no idea how many kids we lost to the sand

I feel like I need to go back and re watch animaniacs. A lot of those jokes were way over my head in the 90s

Everyone else remembers the PSA of the guy staring out the window with rain coming down worrying about his bike, right?
I feel like that’s what you’re referencing.

The more recent issue is PFAS In rainwater on every continent and above max safety levels in places. It accumulates in humans throughout one’s lifetime and brings significant human health effects; even some of the newer generation PFAS intended to be safer just aren’t working out right.
