Any deaf Linux users here?

Who here is Deaf? Been wanting to create a deaf only Linux user subreddit. Please comment here if you’re deaf and use linux, plus interested in creating a deaf Linux subreddit. This way we can work with like minded users :)
jacob_ewing@reddit
Only in one ear personally.
martian_doggo@reddit
Same
silencer_ar@reddit
Same!

Come join! https://www.reddit.com/r/DeafLinux/
martian_doggo@reddit
Joined, but why, what's the point of this? Deafness specific apps, utilities?
Macdaddyaz_24@reddit (OP)
It’s about anything really, its about experiences nit just Linux but anything. We can share what help led us, even ask technical questions, and its not just Linux but cane be Windows or Mac. its about community with like minded folks. Give it time. 😁
jacob_ewing@reddit
Not a bad idea. It might be more useful though to have a generic disabilities oriented Linux subreddit.
I could have used this years ago when I had a smashed wrist and was looking for a way to set up one-handed touch typing.
That said, I suspect the applicable audience is too small for such a subreddit to get any momentum.
Macdaddyaz_24@reddit (OP)
You can always create that subreddit.
No-Dig-1626@reddit
can i join if i mute my audio?
Macdaddyaz_24@reddit (OP)
No
No-Dig-1626@reddit
that's racist...
Macdaddyaz_24@reddit (OP)
No its not. It’s you mocking the deaf by saying as a hearing person, is muting your audio allows me to join? You should be ashamed of yourself.
tavishwolf@reddit
Is being deaf complete silence? Do you hear yourself in your mind?
Macdaddyaz_24@reddit (OP)
It varies with certain people. in my case I’m completely deaf in both ears. Even had cochlear implant and it wasn’t successful. For me I was able to hear with a hearing aid up to the age of 20 then I lost all my hearing. Usually us deafs have to deal with tinnitus but we get used to it. For me I tend to play songs in my head that I remember before I lost my hearing. But for those who were born deaf, its different for them.
tavishwolf@reddit
That's cool, thanks for answering, hope your community grows, though i might suspect it's way too niche, maybe a disabled coomunity? I used to translate books to braille and some blind students absolutely loved tech but sometimes resources and community is hard to come by. I think i've met only one or two deaf people in my life sadly, sign language seems very cool.
Revolutionary-Yak371@reddit
BTW, Devuan has good support for blind persons, some kind of talking and loud reader.
HeavyMetalMachine@reddit
I think some people from the Gnome dev team posts here sometimes.
Dolapevich@reddit
I understand that persons with different disabilities have their own kind of special needs.
However I think it would make a lot of sense having a more general sub for various grades of blind, deaf, etc.
404-allah-not-found@reddit
What is gonna be a benefit of it? if i would ve deaf i would want to convert any speech to text immediately and there are lots of tools for it en.
etancrazynpoor@reddit
What the heck are you talking about ?
triemdedwiat@reddit
My 2c is;
They are not 'deaf' and
They have never used those tools and had to rely on them.
Just because a tool/program/app exists under Linux, doesn't mean it is useful and helps you.
Linux might be $$$ free, but it sure can cost a bit of blood sweat and tears at times.
Macdaddyaz_24@reddit (OP)
You talk like a Windows user and who are you to decide when someone is deaf or not? I‘ve been using Linux for far longer than you’ve ever had and been through just about every linux issues and solved them with ease. this is why I created this subreddit so I can share my experiences and knowledge with other deafs.
triemdedwiat@reddit
You have re-plied with your strawmen to the wrong user.
I'll bow to your claim of being beside Linus when he posted his 'kernel' to usenet. I'm just a mortal who picked it up through Fidonet.
I'm also not so full of myself to claim that everything within the Linux/FOSS sphere is the bee's knees.
Good to hear that you have created the sub.
Journeyj012@reddit
"If I would've deaf" implies they aren't deaf.
SirGlass@reddit
Not deaf but just curious as I am ignorant on the subject but what type of issues do deaf people face when using an OS or linux?
I would guess getting alerts is problematic like messages or calls, gaming might be a bit difficult with some games.
Watching videos or podcast with out a transcript I can see as being issues. I however agree, there should be more focus on accessibility issues .
ChapterSpecial6920@reddit
What?
pppjurac@reddit
HE SAID DEAF! I DO NOT KNOW IF BEEING FORMER ARTILLERY COUNTS? OK? JUST WRITE IT LOUD !
lg, former arty medic
rresende@reddit
what?
jqVgawJG@reddit
HES A FORMER NAZI ADDICT
580083351@reddit
I am, but I don't use Linux much.
This app is a must-install, it is such a big difference maker: https://flathub.org/apps/net.sapples.LiveCaptions
It will work with everything, as opposed to Chrome's captions which only works with stuff inside Chrome and the speed is not quite as fast as I'd like.
Sirko2975@reddit
I use my laptop on muted all the time, does that count?
sob727@reddit
The audio on my XPS 9370 got borked in a 5.x kernel. Bluetooth audio still works though.
sob727@reddit
Sorry. Best of luck. Great idea.
Drak3@reddit
What if I have an auditory processing issue? Would that count?
Macdaddyaz_24@reddit (OP)
That’s fine :)
Drak3@reddit
Then, count me in!
Dani_E2e@reddit
Me2 😊👋👍
wowieniceusername@reddit
Ah, yes, the first reddit to never have any problem with Pipewire /s
gimmethenoize@reddit
I'm deaf with cochlear implants, if that counts. Also totally blind. Not interested in joining yet another subreddit, even with my virtually unlimited time at the moment, but figured I'd answer your question :P
Domipro143@reddit
How do you type if you're blind?
Journeyj012@reddit
Narrators can speak the keys you type
Source: not blind, but I raged so hard at a game that I accidentally turned on the narrator and it started speaking each key
Macdaddyaz_24@reddit (OP)
You’re welcome to join! https://www.reddit.com/r/DeafLinux/
Macdaddyaz_24@reddit (OP)
It’s been created! go to /DeafLinux, I tried to name it /DeafHoHLinux, Reddit wouldn’t accept it
wasabiwarnut@reddit
Can you edit that to your original post for easier access?
Macdaddyaz_24@reddit (OP)
Done
Particular-Poem-7085@reddit
Death? I don’t want to die.
OrkOrk435@reddit
Isn't there a sub dedicated to accessibility on Linux in general? I believe it would be better and more popular
Macdaddyaz_24@reddit (OP)
There isn’t one, I checked.
pppjurac@reddit
This is just fragmentation of already marginal community and is not well thought out idea.
If you want to help deaf and hard of hearing people, join one of existing subreddit communities.
Macdaddyaz_24@reddit (OP)
It’s not about fragmentations, it’s about siding with people with the same language and culture. Deaf culture is very different than hearing culture. When we’re in the hearing subreddit, we feel lonely but when we’re in a subreddit of other deafs and hard of hearings even with asl interpreters we don’t feel so lonely.
pppjurac@reddit
I stand by original assesment.
There is power in numbers and /r/deaf is where you should start with real action to help and grow. And don't 'linux hurr durr': it wil just scare people away.
Macdaddyaz_24@reddit (OP)
You fail to see the reason why I created this subreddit. go back to the subreddit you came from. Bye.
pppjurac@reddit
Well to you too. Just get a grip on too big ego.
Macdaddyaz_24@reddit (OP)
It’s nit about ego. I don’t expect you to understand deaf culture but if you did you would be coming here trying to destroy something by suggesting all deafs go to hearing subreddits. but if there is anyone with any ego its you.
KhINg_Kheng@reddit
Hi I have friends that are deaf and also I tried becoming an interpreter in our Church. My sign language is rusty but I would love to sign up for this because I want to have deeper insights on the deaf+linux community.
night_fapper@reddit
What would be the features exactly for accessibility?
triemdedwiat@reddit
Start it.
RoomyRoots@reddit
Although it's quite niche, I think making one for general accessibility would be good. One of the latest Graham posts from Planet KDE made me think about it a lot.
Such_Injury31@reddit
nah sorry i dont even use linux lmfao
wearysurfer@reddit
Not deaf, just wanted to say this is cool
