Given the recent weather, would you consider getting air conditioning?

I dont know about you, but I absolutely dread the warm days like we had last week. The absolute worst is when it doesnt cool down in the evening and the good old "Keep the windows closed during the day and open them during the evening" trick doesnt work because its still 24c at 11pm. It just sucks because I just hate being hot and sweaty all the day and struggle to sleep when its too warm
My parents think its a massive waste of money since you'd only use it a few days a year
biscoffman@reddit
No. Bad for the environment, expensive, and makes it more difficult to tolerate hot weather without AC.
That said, this is based on being at home. My opinion changes a bit in work especially places like hospitals and school. The benefits probably outweigh the cons there.
peekachou@reddit
Have a portable one with a hose out the window. Best £300 I've spent. I work night shifts and it's been an absolute god send to actually be able to sleep during the day in the heat as our upstairs gets zero airmovement even with fans
External-Praline-451@reddit
Can I ask which one you got? I've been looking today, because our bedroom was 30c and I've broken and decided we need one!
Unfortunately a lot are sold out though as many others are obviously feeling the same as us.
peekachou@reddit
We got this one which isn't fantastic but it still does the job pretty well, we have a weirdly long bedroom so I think it would be better if you had a more normal shaped room. Gets it down to about 20°c from 26/27 ish and has a little remote so I can turn it on and off without getting out of bed
External-Praline-451@reddit
Great thanks
Greengrass7772@reddit
I’d love it but I ain’t got a penny.
AC is out of reach for those of us who are skint.
Royal-Jackfruit-2556@reddit
Keep an eye out on gumtree and local sales. Plenty people will be upgrading to newer quieter models.
Greengrass7772@reddit
I guess so mate but I only got £4 to me name.
I’m part of the underclass, the beaten and downtrodden, my kind don’t have any money for such luxuries.
frankchester@reddit
Been seriously considering it. It's cheaper than I expected. I spec'd up around £3-5k for three rooms (two bedrooms and our TV room which is large enough for an office etc too).
I hate the heat and our upstairs is unbearable when its warm - it was 35c in the bedroom overnight the past few nights.
It is an expense of course, but would make such a difference living in the South East when it's only getting hotter.
I also imagine it's another strong selling point for any future buyers.
ElusiveCrab@reddit
First summer in this house and its been surprisingly cool downstairs. Likely going to buy a decent ac before next year though because the gaming room was a furnace and id like to not be trapped downstairs

Couple grand for a week or two a year? Nah
Better_Concert1106@reddit
Not sure where you live in the uk, but the whole week or two of the year mantra hasn’t applied for at least a decade. A proper ductless split system also heats in the winter, so if done properly you’d get your moneys worth all year round.
Numerous_Green4962@reddit
Mini splits should be covered by the heat pump grants, it would be a way to push adoption and move away from gas.
Better_Concert1106@reddit
Yeah, agree
No-Spend-3477@reddit
I live in Campbeltown
Better_Concert1106@reddit
Ah, fair do’s. I’m in South West England so think we probably get it a bit warmer 🤣
Mysterious-Sock39@reddit
Exactly this just paid 5k for 4 x Panasonic in each of the bedrooms had portable Aircon before can't wait. 7 year warranty.
Better_Concert1106@reddit
See that doesn’t sound bad at all from where I am. Does that include install too?
Mysterious-Sock39@reddit
Yes ,quite bit ducting as main bedroom top floor townhouse
Better_Concert1106@reddit
Even better - can’t complain at that.
soitspete@reddit
For a week or two every year. Vs s couple grand for a week or two holiday one year.
No-Spend-3477@reddit
Never been on a holiday in my life so can’t comment on that. Not my thing
ILikeXiaolongbao@reddit
Portable ones are like £300
Willeth@reddit
I got a standalone unit for a couple hundred quid a couple years ago. I dread checking the energy bill for it but to be honest it doesn't matter - one of the best investments I've ever made, even if it's costing me a tenner a day.
dvi84@reddit
I worked out that mine costs about half what my heating does for one room per hour. People won’t hesitate to put heating on but for some reason are opposed to cooling. It makes no sense.
summerloco@reddit
Link or name? Keen to get one too.
Willeth@reddit
It was just one that came up on HotUKDeals in October at some point. It's a Black and Decker if that helps.
BroadCat-9799@reddit
Recently bought a new AC unit last month, would say its well worth it
running_on_fumes25@reddit
Portable unit. Best purchase I ever made.
I'd love a whole house system but I'm not able to convince the missus
minnis93@reddit
Bought an air con unit for £200 last year.
Best £200 I ever spent, and if it ever broke, I'd order another in a heartbeat.
summerloco@reddit
Link or name please ?
running_on_fumes25@reddit
Just go on amazon and search for a portable aircon.
Look at anything in the 8000-10000 btu range. They're all the same. You jist want to make sure it comes with something to block the window you hang the exhaust tube out of.
Personally I've got a Netta unit that cost about £200 a few years ago.
Jimmy90081@reddit
What a unique and unexpected question. Outstanding.
Life-Bedroom-8886@reddit
Would I combat the impact of global heating by asking manufacturers to create more stuff that needs electricity to operate..?
No, probably not.
I’ll just do things a little slower. Drink more water. Drape myself with a damp towel to sleep and crack on with my life.
Better_Concert1106@reddit
We shouldn’t be limiting what we do, instead we should have abundant clean energy (wind, solar, tidal, nuclear base load) such that everyone can have AC. Why be uncomfortable on purpose in pursuit of being virtuous, it’s such a weird attitude. Anyway, modern inverter systems are incredibly efficient compared to older units and no amount of drinking water, wet towels or whatever will replicate proper cooling. Do you refuse heating in the winter because it uses energy too?
greylord123@reddit
Go live in a mud hut then and forage off the land. Turn off the Internet that you are currently using with massive data banks that contribute more to the climate than running a little AC unit for a few hours.
ILikeXiaolongbao@reddit
Hilarity of person that almost certainly is heating their home being holier than thou about protecting our planet complaining about AC.
Guess what, heating a home is much more carbon intensive than cooling a home.
A house in the desert being cooled uses less of our resources than a house in a wet foggy cold area being heated.
Virtual_Presence_AI@reddit
Yesterday was the hottest day ever in some parts of the UK. Up in the north east it was so cold I had to put a jumper on. Don't need AC up in the far north.
First_Folly@reddit
I'm getting a unit for my office when I finish renovations. I can either keep it in there for a summer sanctuary or move it to the bedroom so I don't have to sleep in human soup.
gotty2018@reddit
Got it installed in the bedroom a couple of years ago. Hands down the best decision we’ve made. We like the bedroom to stay cool, so any time the temperature is anything above low 20s, the AC cools the room to 17/18. I don’t dread trying to sleep when it’s hot, and it’s a great space for our dog to relax during the day when it’s too hot. One of the best things we’ve added to the house!
Unusual_residue@reddit
No thanks
OldLondon@reddit
I’m redoing part of my house in the next year or so and we e already said we’re putting a property wall mounted aircon in. I think over the next 10+ years these kinds of temperatures will get more frequent, will look at solar at the same time
raccoonsaff@reddit
No, for the same reasons as your parents!
wardyms@reddit
Bought a house that has it already. Thought it was frivolous nonsense. It’s changed my mind for future houses.
If I hadn’t seen such riches, I could live with being poor.
behavedgoat@reddit
F this heat we need to stop global warming dawgs . Too much I'm sweating even my knees are sweating
stumble2tumble@reddit
Scottish person here. Not air conditioning, more likely a sunbed.
skibbin@reddit
When my wife was heavily pregnant a few summers ago I bought one of those free standing units. It works... okay. At great effort it'll cool a small room a decent amount, enough to reduce things from a furnace to warm. They are fundamentally limited because they suck in air and do two things with it:
In the USA they have sliding windows and fit air conditioners in those, which work very well. They keep the hot side of the system outside and the cool side indoors. Never seen them for sale in the UK and they wouldn't fit most of our windows anyway.
The big solution is a whole home heat pump/AC system doing both heat and cooling. They are more efficient for heating, but electric heat is still an expensive option. Installation is also expensive.
greylord123@reddit
The stand alone units are decent if you can seal the window up. A little bit of DIY with an insulation panel and it's fairly easy.
Just chucking the vent out the window is no use and those fabric window seals are a bit shit
FoxElectrical1401@reddit
24c 🤣
Timely_Egg_6827@reddit
Redoing the electrics and going to get it priced. We have small pets with fur coats and they are really being affected.
SciFiEmma@reddit
I’m massively lucky in that I live on a corner and have one bedroom which is cool in the summer and a lounge which is warm in the winter. Yay for great insulation, too. I adjust what room I spend most time in. And I have an amazing super quiet huge fan which helps a lot. No room for A/C. On really bad days I go to the cinema a lot!
Sophyska@reddit
100%. Hopefully one day when I have my “forever” house rather than a flat I’ll eventually leave it’ll be something I look at very seriously. I have a fan on year round, all night and use a 1 tog duvet year round too. To have a lovely cool room would be so worth it.
Holiday-Poet-406@reddit
Nope.
FletchLives99@reddit
Nah. A little sweating is good for you.
BaldyBaldyBouncer@reddit
Nope. I don't want to have giant white boxes on the walls that because I only use 5 times a year smell like feet.
PM-ME_UR_TINY-TITS@reddit
I've honestly got nowhere to put standalone ones.
It does make getting a heat pump seem more appealing however.
gameofgroans_@reddit
Last week? I’m still ‘sleeping’ in a puddle of sweat here haha
But yeah, as soon as I can move somewhere it’s feasible (my flat is way too small currently) I’ll be getting it. I’m really sensitive to the heat and it’s only set to get worse so it’ll be a worthwhile investment for me personally. I understand that isn’t the case for everyone though!
redmanshaun@reddit
I would waste money on the luxury of having AC if I owned my own home for sure.
dinkidoo7693@reddit
Yep but I’m skint. If i could afford to buy i house id want aircon and a dishwasher installed
Tiggywiggler@reddit
I am planning to buy two portable ones. Yes it is a huge expense for only a few days or maybe weeks, but the money they cost is lower than the discomfort I experience.
