Can’t find work

I have 6 months experience and a perfect driving record. Nobody will touch me because I don’t have 2 years experience. There isn’t a shortage of drivers. You guys just won’t hire us.
WishDry1144@reddit
You try food service?
Sad-Barracuda98@reddit
You’re looking in the wrong place. Stop looking at over the road, start looking at excavation companies. Dirt haulers. Trash haulers. Paving companies. There’s plenty of work, just gotta know where to look. (Hint… is not Indeed)
HardShellChocolate6@reddit
If not indeed, then where
ejperry135@reddit
I’d say just start paying closer attention to trucks you see driving around. And then contact the company directly, if you can show up to their building in person and speak to a hiring manager that would be best.
I do have a question though. What made you leave your last company? And was it on good terms? Insurance definitely can be a show stopper but there is also a such thing as being blackballed. Meaning the reputation your old company has on you and/or the reason you left is blocking others from wanting to touch you. This is why I don’t encourage new drivers to job hop within the first year or two. A lot of drivers do it to chase a higher salary but if you don’t have endorsements and/or TWIC, you will easily be overlooked in today’s market.
Thepopethroway@reddit
Exactly this. If you can dress, know how to shave, and speak English you'll probably leave with a job offer.
Shiny-Starfish@reddit
Be clean and neat. It's long past the time when managers cared about a prospective employee being clean shaven, especially when talking about jobs in skilled trades.
Automatic_Spirit_225@reddit
What even was that blip in history where beards were considered unkempt? President's used to have some wild facial hair.

Helpful_Finger_4854@reddit
You thought the jobs on indeed were real jobs ? Lmao
HardShellChocolate6@reddit
If you go on to the company website from indeed, yes. It's real.

GlitteringSession115@reddit
Most road and bridge departments are hiring to. Not the best pay but benefits are pretty good.
Thepopethroway@reddit
It's called call up the recruiter/terminal manager.
Old-Wolf-1024@reddit
In person…..go knock on some doors
Dudeshigh@reddit
Not indeed then where else does one look? I know it’s generally not a good place to look but there nothing else like it
Shiny-Starfish@reddit
There's plenty of jobs in OTR. OP needs to realize that 6 months experience doesn't command a pay raise.
jmzstl@reddit
Even on Indeed there’s a bunch of places hiring in the 0-6 months experience range in his area. It can be annoying to sort through the BS, but there are good opportunities on there.
doorhole400@reddit
Funny enough I just saw that he was in Salt Lake and I need a driver for our dump truck
LetterheadIcy1744@reddit
I’ll give u the best advice in trucking. It’s all in “who you know” get a referral from family or any one else and you’ll land a good job
ejperry135@reddit
I have a question. Well 2. What made you leave your last company? And was it on good terms? Insurance definitely can be a show stopper but there is also a such thing as being blackballed. Meaning the reputation your old company has on you and/or the reason you left is blocking others from wanting to touch you. This is why I don’t encourage new drivers to job hop within the first year or two (if they can help it). A lot of drivers do it to chase a higher salary but if you don’t have endorsements and/or TWIC, you will easily be overlooked in today’s market.
racoon1@reddit (OP)
I left on good terms. I fulfilled my contract. I left because I don’t want to live in a truck with a stranger.
mistman1978@reddit
Are you marked eligible for rehire?
That's all that matters..
racoon1@reddit (OP)
From what he told me, from a legal standpoint he’d have to send me through cdl school again.
SargeOsis@reddit
My insurance policy won't qualify anybody with less than 2 years experience regardless of how good the driving record is. So I can't hire anybody with less than 2 years of experience. Larger orgs that self-insure have more options.
mistman1978@reddit
You can pay more for a more expensive policy, correct?
The hiring manager where I haul fuel said they could employ students but premiums would quadruple
mayainverse@reddit
I helped a guy start out trucking with the company I'm at. Like only a week or 2 in he didn't like pay quit and got a 70/hr job at a construction company lmao. Meanwhile I make half he does and haven't been home for 2 years
Tough_Yard7088@reddit
Call Steven’s Transportation in Mesquite Tx..
Cardinal_350@reddit
There's jobs everywhere my man. Shitloads of mom and pops and local jobs don't advertise online. I guarantee if you aren't afraid of labor you can get a beverage or restaurant supply job. We hire non stop because people don't like the labor and quit. 1 in 10 under 25 years old stay. It's always the older guys that stick around. I work 4 days a week and make 6 figures doing restaurant supply. Don't be afraid of a little work
Ill-Indication-8198@reddit
I’m 24 trying my hardest to get CDL and this says alot, d m me?
codekb@reddit
I was 22 when I got my CDL. I worked for two mega companies (Werner and TMC). It gave me the experience I needed but covid hit and the small truck company I was working for crumbled. I’d rough out the 1-2 year OTR experience and then move local.
Ill-Indication-8198@reddit
Did you pay for your CDL or get help? I’m tryna get help
BaseballDue9043@reddit
Call Steven's Transport they have a school and then you can drive for them. They finance every nothing out of pocket up front for you. It OTR though. They also have nice newer equipment.
Ill-Indication-8198@reddit
I live in Yakima washington and idk who to go through I can’t find a Steven’s transport, roehl, swift, anywhere in Yakima I’ve called 3 local companies and they have no contracts or training programs that cover payment, I’m going through OIC but getting nowhere the past 2 months
BaseballDue9043@reddit
Also Steven's will pay your tuition back $250 a month as long as you drive for them.
BaseballDue9043@reddit
Stevens main OC is in Dallas, I went there for my CDL and was done in 4weeks. They will pay for your transportation there and put you up in a hotel during training. Also shuttle you back and forth to the school daily. Afterwards you will get assigned a OTR trainer and ride and drive with them for about 6 weeks they you get your owe truck. After getting your truck you get 7 days off at your home of record but the truck has to be parked at there nearest OC during your off time. Only reason I'm not driving for them is I missed 2 flights back to the trainers truck and got fired, I only have 2 months OTR experience now... Going to Schneider as there the only Mega hiring no experience drivers right now. There out of Dallas also.
codekb@reddit
I used the GI bill to cover my costs. It was “free”. It usually costs anywhere from 7500-10,000 for a good CDL school. Or you can let a company pay for it and in return you do X ammount of working there until it’s paid off. I would suggest eating the cost yourself and picking a good company from the start.
racoon1@reddit (OP)
None of them can hire me because I don’t have enough experience.
BaseballDue9043@reddit
Check with Schneider, I'm in the same boat as you. There going to hire me with only 2 months experience.
doorhole400@reddit
Want to drive a dump truck? Looking for a driver and we mostly work out of Morgan
codekb@reddit
Where you located at?
doorhole400@reddit
Based in Heber and work Wasatch front & back up through Eden area.
Un7am3d@reddit
I hope op sees this
Budtending101@reddit
I hope he responds to you, getting a random job opportunity like this is awesome. You're a gem
RebelTvshka@reddit
Bro, SLC is a wannabe city. It gets a lot of deliveries but has next to nothing going out. You'd likely do better working the warehouse, at least you'd be home.
Clue-Just@reddit
Another issue is the extremely low pay especially for the small to mid. Even swift is paying more cpm than small companies.
codekb@reddit
Swift has a good selection of dedicated accounts and intermodal.
Quirky_Science_6584@reddit
These are the jobs I’m looking for, stupid question but any tips for where to apply? Or find who’s hiring? I tried Coke, Pepsi, Herrs, Sysco, I’m looking for beer delivery, basically anything physical is fine for me
Helpful_Finger_4854@reddit
Construction 🚧
Cardinal_350@reddit
I don't mean to be a dick but I have no idea where you're looking. GOOGLE is youre friend. There has to be a reason you aren't getting hired because Sysco is always hiring everywhere. I'm going to tell you right now getting into food your availability has to be 24/7 for the first few years. If you aren't putting that on your apps they get shitcanned. Applications to my company get dumpstered by the system if you don't put your availability as 24/7. The apps never even make it to a person
Thepopethroway@reddit
Do you hate this man?
Cardinal_350@reddit
Anything is better than nothing and you can make money there
Thepopethroway@reddit
I worked at Sysco and disagree. First year. At the end of my time there was pulling close to 3k a week. It's still not worth it.
Most guys absolutely cannot handle doing 1000 cases a day. Driving cover routes for the first year before you have no seniority. The awful equipment. 14+ hour days.
Your CDL is worth it's weight in gold and Sysco is the job that will increase your risk of accidents 10-fold. You get an accident on your record and you just lost tens of thousands of dollars. Get another one and you'll be forced to stay at Sysco or work for a mega because nobody will take you.
I was lucky to come out unscathed.
Sufficient_Tooth_949@reddit
I applied at coke and pepsi like 8 times each until I finally got hired, people are always quitting because its intense labor
xxenoscionxx@reddit
I’ve seen 3 guys in the last week quit, worked for a week or two and decided it was either too much or not enough. Am not exactly sure. It’s hard to retain drivers that are willing to put up with the non perfect life of a truck driver.
Edge2110@reddit
Garbage trucks.
13MrJeffrey@reddit
Suck it buttercup go find a mega carrier
OwnAd8278@reddit
Why did you quit your job before you found a new one. 6 months is nothing. Why did you leave after only 6 months. Things just aren't adding up.
TruthBehindMyEyes@reddit
If you don't have it yet a lot of companies are using driver pulse for their hiring process now. Also hirschbach hires anyone 6 months or longer. I think Frey Miller to
Ok_Requirement_6995@reddit
CR enlgand will hire you for sure. My husband started with them with no experience and they treated him very well
Stunning-Gold-6023@reddit
How much cpm they pay?
forsakensinner92@reddit
Best bet would be in the construction industry driving a dumptruck, mixer, end-dump. They will hire anyone
Lpgasman1@reddit
Redi mix plants will hire you
Illustrious-Tip-2736@reddit
Are you applying to the places that say that you need two years experience or are you seeing the ad saying that and getting discouraged? Apply everywhere that works for you, that 2 year experience thing isn't written in stone
soupsandwich00@reddit
Don Hummer Trucking in Cedar Rapids, IA will take you with six months experience.
FinzClortho@reddit
You're not going to like this, but you have to start at a training company, a mega carrier. Swift, Schneider, us express, England. Get your experience there and move on. You may actually like it, and decide to stay.
CCCL350@reddit
No decent company wants you because of insurance reasons, it's that simple.
You need 2yrs of "verifiable" experience to qualify for insurance discounts. No company wants to pay $5k/month to insure a rookie driver.
You can thank the mega-fleet lobbyists for that. They are the gate keepers in this industry and they want first dibs at all the disposable fresh grads to man their shitboxes. They also get govt subsidies for hiring the unhireable fresh cdl grads. That's their part of their scheme.
justdan76@reddit
Sorry fam, never was a truck driver shortage
Helpful_Finger_4854@reddit
Not really. The system doesn't like having barely enough drivers because then the drivers have options and companies have to competitively pay more in order to retain new hires.
So yeah basically whenever there's enough drivers, they have to pay more. Whenever the markets flooded they pay us less.
justdan76@reddit
There are more people with CDL’s than there are trucking jobs. When they say there’s a shortage, what they really mean is they can’t find enough people to work for shitty pay and conditions. The “shortage” is a myth to keep recruiting new people and bringing in people on work visas who they can exploit.
Shiny-Starfish@reddit
What happened with your old job? 6 months isn't much experience at all in the trucking industry. There is a shortage of drivers because trucking companies are not willing to relax their hiring standards in the interest of protecting their business. There are tons of OTR companies that hire people without experience, even right now. You are going to have to ve willing to drive for pay you are probably feeling like is beneath you.
Once you get hired, stick with that company for at least a year. Don't give yourself the reputation of being a job hopper. Are you trying to shortcut your way to making a few dollars more a month now, or are you trying to make a career out of driving that has longevity? If you want longevity, don't worry so much about how much you are making your first 3 years. Those first 3 years are a tine investment into setting yourself up for the better paying jobs with better benefits. Play the long game, not the shortcut game.
Previous-Term212@reddit
Usxpress will take you for sure
AutumnBrooks2021@reddit
You either quit without having another job lined up or got fired? Either way, that’s not the industry’s fault, it’s yours. Everyone knows you have to get a at least a year to two years experience before changing companies. Lots of companies won’t hire you because they know that 6 months or less, you’ll quit and they just don’t want to waste their time on you. You need to start making better decisions and take responsibility for your decisions instead of blaming the industry or someone else.
Super1297Man@reddit
Most foodservice jobs will hire.
Molten_Baco@reddit
LTL work, food/beverage work, plenty of high turnover local jobs out there of you are willing to bust ass
Chaddie_D@reddit
I went to the Mack dealership and asked a salesman who had a bunch of trucks and needed a driver. He gave me 5 companies to try and I had a job in about 20 minutes.
killcote93@reddit
Look for a job no one else wants. We pump shit and grease so we can never get anyone to stay. Maybe drive a garbage truck?
Maver1ckCB@reddit
How much do you typically make doing that? We have some openings in my area and I’m curious.
killcote93@reddit
We have a few local drivers around 30 an hour. Our Chicago driver is around 40. I happen to be a laborer for about 25 an hour. I started around 20 a couple years ago. We are a small family owned company, not a corporate chain. We've got like 9 employees. It is a stinky dirty job but it pays the bills. I just (barely) bought a house for me the wife and two kids with her being a stay at home mom. I assumed shit (septic tanks) would be worse than grease (traps), but I was wrong.
Un7am3d@reddit
Indeed is garbage, especially in this industry.
Tensteeet, lane finder, cdllife are promising
But just go in person, probably get hired on the spot 1/5 times.
Beautiful-Slice166@reddit
Definitely just looking in the wrong places
Imaginativested@reddit
Yep, 6 months experience but only looking at jobs that require 2 years. Mega carriers will all take drivers with 6 months and even let them be a trainer/mentor and local food and beverage companies would too or even lazer spot if thats his thing.
Beautiful-Slice166@reddit
Yeah, i left my forst job with 7 months almost a year ago and had 0 problems having 7 or 8 offers before i got out of truck and got on a plane going to orientation. At 6 months nearly anyone will hire you, even the pickier mid sizes, at 12 any of those will, 18 nearly everyone, 2 years... yadda yadda so on so forth. With 6 months getting a job is fairly easy if your not expecting the moon
Living-Ad5291@reddit
Typical. New to the industry and expects everything to be handed to you
MOBIUS__01@reddit
I had the same issue but with 2 years experience. I transitioned to land survey and am going to school while working. I had $82 an hour yesterday, and rarely ever do overtime
BraveG365@reddit
What do you do in land surveying?
MOBIUS__01@reddit
Mostly topo, or staking. I'm a rod-man but also have done college class for C3D so I've been drafting too. Got lucky getting hitched a great civil firm that does a lot of government work. prevailing wage pay the bills very nicely. I make more in 40 hours survey than a did maxing out my DOT hours a day driving low boy equipment. Trucking industry doesn't pay you to be smart anymore
Feisty-Season-5305@reddit
Go to a loves at like 6 a clock and walk the parking lot and take a video. That's an easy 100 places to apply
Thepopethroway@reddit
Go up to the drivers and ask them about the job. They looooove talking about themselves and they've all been very honest from my experience.
Feisty-Season-5305@reddit
Idk bout all that but just gave ya 100 places to a0ply

charo-lastra_charolo@reddit
Don’t blame immigrants, it’s a you problem if you can’t get a job with those qualifications. Look at Megas. Get a year experience. Flip that for a better job.
NorseOfCourse@reddit
Have you looked at your local Teamsters? There's got to be a lot of companies looking for road construction drivers right now.
chico-dust@reddit
Go work for Swift for a few years then. They have a yard literally in Salt Lake. Idk what fleets run out of there but it's better than nothing.
santanzchild@reddit
The industry is pretty easy to follow. Shouldn't of quit a stable job with so little experience without lining something up first.
Also the only people claiming a driver shortage is megas.
fusillijhericurl@reddit
Did you quit a job at 6 months before having one lined up??
racoon1@reddit (OP)
Yes I did, and it was a mistake for sure. So fuck me and the 5600$ I spent on cdl school forever right?
bassin_matt_112@reddit
Either go to a mega or go local food service. Get more experience then you can drive for whoever you want.
Supertrucker82@reddit
Keep looking your totally green dude. Someone will take a chance on you.
Independent-Fun8926@reddit
It’s been like this for years. People with years or decades of experience are all having a hard time finding work. The industry is fucked.
Do something else. Look into apprenticeships for linemen jobs. They need a CDL and can make great money.
Good luck
SkullyBones2@reddit
I know merchant marine is an option. I decided to give trucking a rest and secured an apprenticeship slot with the Seafarers Union.
NarutoUchihaX14@reddit
It just depends on luck and area. Plenty of drivers like you say they have little to no experience and can't find anything. Just as many that have little to no experience hopping right into damn good local gigs
RedimidoSoy1611@reddit
this isnt the case everywhere. I work local tanker hauling fertilizer. pay is $22 an hour but i have less than 6 months. ill take $22 gracias any day as a newbie. theres jobs out there... Just got to accept low pay

Row30@reddit
Ag work, construction (cement truck) work, small mom&pop companies. Work is out there. Don’t be picky
clicheliker@reddit
You want my advice? If you got the patience go to oreilly auto, do one year full time with no disciplinary issues or write ups and after one year transfer to their warehouse as a local driver. I suggest the same with Walmart, dominoes, Dunkin donut, and major grocery chain near you like Kroger, papa John’s… whether they’re local or regional varies.
Kkalemauser@reddit
Find small class b dump truck jobs in your area. Look at pallet companies, they tend to hire anyone with a pulse.
I started with a local pneumatic tanker hauling cement.

The insurance companies. They dictate everything concerning hiring practices. If companies higher and experience people the rates go up.
