Never liked the Roma, this is much better!
CutCorners@reddit
Opinions are interesting. I have the exact opposite view. Roma is spectacular and Amalfi is a Kia version of it. Maybe one day the Roma price will come down to my level.
3dmontdant3s@reddit
Yeah curious, but hey there's no right or wrong
Aarondo99@reddit
I thought the Roma was achingly pretty and this is somehow the first Ferrari I’ve ever looked at and thought “did they take inspiration from the Prius”
CutCorners@reddit
Completely agree. I think Roma is a masterpiece. Amalfi is a bland version of the idea.
ArcticBP@reddit
I like the rest of the car, but the front is really reminding me of Toyota’s design language and the new Prelude
caterham09@reddit
Cars in general just haven't been that creative with their new LED DRL's.
Basically everyone is just trying to make the lights as thin as possible now. It gives everything this really squinty aggressive look.
Terryknowsbest@reddit
This is a really interesting point - the design of lights really set apart car designs in past, but removing the need for big lights, and the need for grilles (EVs), really makes it tough to stand out.
the_gouged_eye@reddit
Waterfall grills and bug eyes are dead, but there's still room for port holes.
hi_im_bored13@reddit
and the acura beak, and the little bit on the lucid, don't think it looks good on any of those cars and think it looks equally dated here
that interior is a massive improvement though
cookingboy@reddit (OP)
I think the Roma looks better and definitely a lot more unique. I can't get enough of how good that car looks in person. It's the only $200k GT car I'm willing to consider at the moment.
But yeah, this interior refresh will crush the Roma's market value.
hi_im_bored13@reddit
good for buyers on both counts, its really not that much of a dealbreaker when you get used to it, they fixed a lot of the issues with software
just like the f8 vs 296 is the portofino vs. roma where I much prefer the interior and looks of the portofino m with its folding hardtop but man the roma drives properly generationally better.
the wheels on this are absolutely stunning though.
cookingboy@reddit (OP)
I don't want to imagine the cost. Maybe $5k + labor? But if I were to buy a slightly used 296 I'll probably do it lol.
I_COMMENT_2_TIMES@reddit
Yeah, both are great cars but the 296 and SF90 are juuuust a bit long in the tooth on the interior design and powertrain side in my opinion.
woodsides@reddit
Similar updates are coming to the SF90 later this year and the 296 next year.
komrobert@reddit
Prelude is Honda
ArcticBP@reddit
Thus my use of the word “and”
The new Prelude has been pretty frequently compared to the design of the Prius & Camry
alastoris@reddit
The front really reminds me of the current generation of Toyota designs. From Prius to Crown to Camry to Rav4.
The rear resembles the late Jaguar type F which i do think is a fantastic looking car.
Dachshand@reddit
It’s much improved. Amazing
Relevant_Ad5662@reddit
Man is the Roma already that old they’re planning a replacement??
cookingboy@reddit (OP)
Exterior aside, the interior is so much better than that of the Roma, with physical controls returning on the steering wheel and the center screen being landscape again.
Now Roma value will further drop, hmm....
blueingreen85@reddit
There are so few pretty cars nowadays.
Substantial_Copy_576@reddit
Weird they change the model name when it’s just a refresh
AnonymousEngineer_@reddit
Isn't that common for Ferrari?
The F355 was an updated version of the 348, and you could arguably say the same about the FF and GTC4Lusso.
Specialist-Size9368@reddit
Ferrari had a naming convention for their two seat sports cars. First two digits were displacement followed by a digit denoting number of cylinders.
Dino 206/246 became the Ferrari 308/328 which became the 348 and then 355.
Now and then Ferrari would add letters after the number to denote changes. 308 QV for the 4 valve head. The 348 got T because of the transverse engine layout. The F355 broke naming convention because Ferrari wanted to highlight its then new 5 valve cylinder heads so the last digit was 5 and not 8.
The F355 chassis is essentially the same as a 348, but so was a 308 and a 328. What is interesting is in Ferrari circles the 348 is considered the last of the old school v8 Ferraris and the 355 is often considered the first modern v8 Ferrari.
Oddly the Mondial retained its name the whole run but just went with adding something after to denote which model Mondial 8, Mondial QV, Mondial 3.2, Mondial T.
AnonymousEngineer_@reddit
Isn't that because the 348 was the last of that model line to be designed while Enzo himself was still alive?
Specialist-Size9368@reddit
No, my understanding is the 348 is the more analogue car. Only European 355's could be optioned with manual steering. Even they are pretty rare. 348 didn't have traction control. The shocks are fixed which is odd because the Mondial T of the time period had electronically adjustable. The 355 got electronically adjustable.
Enzo's last approved car was the F40 which came out in 87. I do not think he was involved in the 348.
hi_im_bored13@reddit
Not until now for this model line though (Cali -> Cali T, Portofino -> Portofino M)
cookingboy@reddit (OP)
Yeah they could have just named it Roma M
Thomas_633_Mk2@reddit
As someone who has loved the Roma since day 1 (and won't be able to afford one for at least 15 years lmao) I wonder if it's possible to yoink the Amalfi wheel and chuck it in the Roma
blackreplica@reddit
The answer is yes. in the top gear video he mentioned that ferrari have confirmed the new steering wheel will be offered as a retrofit option to all ferraris with capactive buttons including the roma, 12cilindri, SF90 and 296
Thomas_633_Mk2@reddit
Cinema
I really love the Roma in red, and if people keep hating on it, it will eventually be cheap enough for me to buy one
Imtherealwaffle@reddit
Would be surprised if it wasnt possible. You can swap steering wheels across generations on lots of cars.
Imtherealwaffle@reddit
Agreed on the steering wheel but i kind of liked the vertical screen that flowed into the transmission tunnel from an aesthetic perspective.
krackenracer@reddit
Agreed on the “less pretty” part.
Bamres@reddit
The roma was a pretty design but I wish ut got a more traditional grille insert.
Not it has no grille at all
thejetssuckbigtime@reddit
The Roma grew on me but I like this design more.
Always_Impressive@reddit
I actually love the hood, and I like that they didn't mess with the back, that always looked nice on the roma.
chumpat@reddit
The exterior is unexciting. This is a fucking ferrari, not an economy car. Roma > this all day.
RBR927@reddit
Ferrari really needs to make up with Pininfarina...
DanielG165@reddit
Pininfarina hasn’t been with Ferrari for 12 years. It’s time for people to move on.
RBR927@reddit
Exactly, they’ve had 12 years so we know it’s not a one-off or short term problem.
lockpickerkuroko@reddit
Ferrari Centro Stile sometimes does some good work - the LaFerrari's not bad, the 296 was pretty good, and I personally think the SP3 Daytona's a magnificent car.
But when it comes to their 'normal' production models, yeah - nothing besides 296 compares to the 458 for mid-engined V8, and nothing's come close to the F12 since (the final Pininfarina Ferrari).
pm_me_round_frogs@reddit
I know I’m in the minority but I think the LaFerrari might be the best looking modern Ferrari. 458 is also fantastic.
Geigerbuzz@reddit
I like this take the best, well put
impossiblefork@reddit
or just put nice round headlights on.
Jlx_27@reddit
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder..
Geigerbuzz@reddit
The car has really lost some of the "dolce vita" aspect that the Roma had but its not ugly by any means. I personally find the design to be a bit too Jaguar F-type but overall it seems to be a good upgrade.
I want to add that I'm still pissed off about the 12 cilindiri's existence. There were test mules of these gorgeous test mule cars that were Romas with V12s and extended hoods and they looked like the most beautiful things ever made.
Instead we got a wanna-be daytona (that isn't called one, thanks SP3), yippee.
Also why is Ferrari putting a V12 in an SUV, a V8 in their entry level offering and a V6 in their halo car?
n05h@reddit
Seems like I’m alone thinking the front is an upgrade. The car lost some elegance in the back compared to the Roma though.
I see why they kept it mostly the same as the silhouette on the car is gorgeous.
Bamres@reddit
I think the front is slightly too simplistic for me.
The old grille was meh, but ive seen people modify them with a more traditional f12 style grille that looked much better.
R_V_Z@reddit
The semi-exposed tail lights on the Roma were a really cool feature. These got hooded.
IamaKing@reddit
I’m on the same page, the old “grill” was absolutely horrible and completely ruined the design for me
armanddd@reddit
I agree, I think the front looks much better, it's the rear I find a bit clunky now. The protruded diffuser elements looks like an aftermarket part.
ASource3511@reddit
Never liked the storm drain front of the Roma. This looks perfect to me.
headcoat2013@reddit
What's with the tachometer for the passenger side? Is there a practical purpose for it or is it just to make use of the screen?
desf15@reddit
So passenger can know at what speed and revs he/she shat himself.
Users5252@reddit
I think the exterior design is a downgrade from the Roma, especially the tail lights.
FlorydaMan@reddit
The Roma had sexier proportions than the Portofino and California, and even though this is a facelift it feels like it goes back to the tall and chunky body of those before.
Users5252@reddit
I agree
candylandmine@reddit
Does it?
whitevwjetta@reddit
ok Toyota Camry
orhantemerrut@reddit
I'd expect this from Kia or Toyota, but not the cocky Ferrari. Nice going. Bring back all the buttons.
KellerMB@reddit
Kia up front, F-type from the A pillar back. Not that I'm complaining, the F-type coupe is beautiful.
Own_Pass_926@reddit
This jaguar look good
haseo111@reddit
Roma looked a lot better, genuinely cant believe that car wasnt appreciated
Dazzling-Rooster2103@reddit
Something about the interior just doesnt look great to me, it seems kind of underwhelming.
$283k also with a 631 Horsepower V8.
Just doesnt seem like that great of a value, I am sure it will sell boatloads though.
narwhal_breeder@reddit
Ahh yes, the brand that caters to the most value-focused customers. Ferrari.
strongmanass@reddit
The brief for the Roma was to attract a new type of buyer to Ferrari, one who didn't want a supercar but wanted the Roma for what it was and not just to get on the Ferrari ladder...although dealers are also using the Roma for that purpose. Anyway, it's supposed to be Ferrari's answer to Bentley and Aston Martin, but now it's $30K more. And while that alone may not be a dealbreaker at that price point if you like the Ferrari enough, when the buyer is having a hard time choosing it's easy to omit an option based on price.
Supreme-Gucci-137@reddit
ferrari actually built the gta ferrari knockoff in real life 💀
Supreme-Gucci-137@reddit
even a gr86 has more design language than this
it's not ugly, just unimpressive
PabloIceCreamBar@reddit
But the Roma just came out…..
Oh.
Neggly@reddit
Looks like a Subaru.
BrownGhost10@reddit
That blue is Devine. Interior refresh was so needed for their whole lineup.
Mrr_Bond@reddit
Seems like Ferrari is still struggling to figure out their front ends, although I do think this is still a big improvement over that horrible body color front grille.
Obviously agree with everyone else on the interior, hopefully this trickles up to the other models shortly.
ajrf92@reddit
Another bland design from Ferrari.
JimmyGodoppolo@reddit
Agreed, the Roma design was at least quirky enough to stand out
Users5252@reddit
There's beauty in simplicity
ajrf92@reddit
Yeah, but if you remove the logos it looks generic. Like an original car created for SketchUp.
Users5252@reddit
Not really, the Ferrari design language is still very much present in the exterior design, any supercar or design enthusiasts would instantly recognize it as a Ferrari even if they never saw one before. The proportions are super balanced, your average SketchUp user without a background in car design would never be able to pull off something with that proportion from scratcg.
argent_pixel@reddit
Looks better than all of the new cars, and like a fixed version of the 12cilindri, but all the same it also looks like an inferior take of the F-Type facelift which I think is a prettier car than every Ferrari made since the 812's debut.
I_COMMENT_2_TIMES@reddit
Looks like it’s on the same platform as the Roma - an evolution a la 458/488/F8? Not necessarily a bad thing imo.
LionSlicer13@reddit
Platform? It’s almost the same thing
unatleticodemadrid@reddit
That’s an incredibly marginal refresh. More of a facelift than anything.
Past-Mousse-4519@reddit
It literally F8 or 328 situation.
Signal_Ball4634@reddit
Seriously it doesn't really warrant a name change IMO
Aromatic_Fail_1722@reddit
This smells like F8 to me, a farewell to the front-engined V8. I hope I'm wrong but we'll find out next year I suppose.
UnscheduledCalendar@reddit
BUTTONS!!!
Sweet-Gushin-Gilfs@reddit
Mom, I want a Toyota
Mom: We have a Toyota at home
The Toyota at home:
ulikescience@reddit
All great cars have a red start button on the steering wheel!
MaybeNext-Monday@reddit
For me, all great cars have a turn key start. There’s just something about the feeling of it.
Sweet-Gushin-Gilfs@reddit
Yeah. That colour is putrid.
AnnoyingRingtone@reddit
Ferrari is really not beating the allegations by showing it off in green. I remember when the Roma came out, everyone was calling it the Aston Martin Roma or the Ferrari Vantage because it really looked like an AM model. Doesn’t mean it isn’t gorgeous, but I still get Aston Martin vibes from this more than Ferrari.
Tight_Olive_2987@reddit
How can they look at this and think it’s a quarter million dollar car
ColdCouchWall@reddit
Because a quarter million today is actually the old $180k
Your dollar is worth 25-30% less now then it was in 2019
Tight_Olive_2987@reddit
That’s not the point I’m making
mulletstation@reddit
Didnt Jaguar already make this car 15 years ago?
sonrisa_medusa@reddit
A brand-new name for a heavy refresh?
A_Coin_Toss_Friendo@reddit
Goddamn it's even uglier than the Roma! And that's saying something!
bazhvn@reddit
We’re living in a time where Ferrari doing worse job designing an Aston Martin than Aston doing a Ferrari
Scarlet-Highlander-@reddit
I’m excited for this purely because Roma values are gonna tank so fantastically hard
nbaumg@reddit
Rare moment I actually like the design of a new sports car more than the previous one.
chandy_dandy@reddit
When will they realize that putting screens into Ferrari's cheapens them? They literally run worse and look worse than Hyundais.
Its better than before but it's still not elegant at all on the inside and the exterior is more bland and less attractive overall.
Cheap cars have screens because its a good way to cut costs on complex button assemblies (probably saves a couple hundred dollars between all the different pieces that have to go together). Expensive cars should use buttons and knobs as an opportunity to make their cars more tactile and timeless, with an ability to show off beautiful engineering with the most unnecessarily perfect tolerances.
cookingboy@reddit (OP)
Screens aren't the issue. The driver screen in the new Ferrari look sensational. These aren't Bugatti or Pagani where customers want a pure analogue look.
But what's the issue is poorly implemented HMI (human machine interface), as the result of both poor hardware (terribly designed capacitive touch), and poor software (the Italians are just terrible at it).
chandy_dandy@reddit
I actually do agree with this particularly with regards to the drivers screen but imo the rest looks tacky as is. It doesn't have to be ostentatious like it is in a pagani or Bugatti where the attention is drawn to button design but it should at least be good imo
SausageExplosion@reddit
That front end is ripped straight from the new Prius
NotFastEnoughYet@reddit
To be fair, the new Prius is way better looking than it has any right to be.
