There is such a wide range you have to be careful what you buy.
A good butchers pork pie, lean meat well seasoned and baked in the crust rather than "cured", add a little jelly - perfect
Yer standard supermarket pork pie - just tasteless stodge.

You occasionally get lucky with the fancy shop ones, although your best bet is always a good farm shop or butchers one! Reading this I really want a pork pie now š¤¤

I used to drive from Birmingham to Ironbridge just to eat the pork pies their butcher does. Perfect balance of pastry, jelly and meat for me. The meat was well seasoned too!

My father in law is a butcher and makes his own. The ones in his shop are pretty good but the ones he makes himself at christmas are unbelievable (cuts of meat that would make the product a price point that would be uneconomical to sell). They completely ruined any other pork pie for me though.

spikewilliams2@reddit
Not too keen on Melton Mowbray because they don't have the bad stuff in that keeps them pink. Nothing worse than a grey pork pie.
Also all the flavours, pickle, pork and apple etc all sound good but I either can't taste anything or I think the original is best and can't be improved on.
mall234@reddit
Iām not sure when this tradition started. But for every birthday I get a pork pie from the local butchers instead of a birthday cake. This thing is more akin to a loaf of bread in size and shape.
My Botswanan girlfriend was unfamiliar with this tradition when it was brought out to me, candles and all, assuming it was a Britās attempt at a cake. But politely laughed along and joined in. Until we sliced it and she saw the pork and jelly.
We figured there was around 5,000 calories in the whole thing.

Thread-Hunter@reddit
Its excellent warmed up with some cheese and extra hot habanero chilli sauce. :D
Chrolan1988@reddit
Never had one hot. Is it better warmed up??
Warm_Badger505@reddit
A purest would say it should always be served cold. I once saw some programme with one of the main producers in Melton Mowbray and he was appalled at the idea of heating one up.
That said pie and peas (mushy peas) is a traditional dish here in Yorkshire and the pork pie is always served hot. Delicious in my opinion. Got to like mush peas though and I get that they're not to everyone's taste.
blurdyblurb@reddit
With a bit of mint sauce on the peas!
adeo54331@reddit
Is it the same pork pie just hot? Or slightly different? I have had a couple hot, I like it, I do prefer it cold though
Warm_Badger505@reddit
Traditionally it's a Yorkshire pork pie which is different (although pretty similar) to a Melton Mowbray style. Has crispier crust, tends to be wider and flatter and has pinkish meat as opposed to the more grey meat in a Melton.
adeo54331@reddit
Thanks for the info, any brand I should look out for will order asap haha
Warm_Badger505@reddit
Don't know any brands I am afraid - I always buy from the butcher. Every butcher up here sells them. They queue down the road at Xmas at the very good ones!
adeo54331@reddit
Ok⦠I am gonna look for a butcher! Appreciate the info
Chrolan1988@reddit
Interesting. I always thought the jelly would melt and the pastry would go soggy so never tried it.
Also, I am no entirely sure of the cooked state of the pork as well. Almost seems like itās partly cured rather than fully cooked like a sausage for example.
I would love to have a pork pie hot if there is one that is designed to be that way.
Warm_Badger505@reddit
To be honest it does go a bit soggy but not necessarily in a bad way. The pork in a pork pie is not cured as such - it's just seasoned pork which gets cooked as the pie is baked as far as I am aware (could be wrong about that though).
Chrolan1988@reddit
I think youāre right but not sure my belly would enjoy the possible aftermath. Will have to give it a go on a weekend to be sure ahah
Warm_Badger505@reddit
Lol. Yeah probably wise.
Thread-Hunter@reddit
Yes because when its warmed up, its softer and the flavour is arguably better. The addition of cheese compliments the party and the hot chilli sauce gives it a good kick. It needs to be a good quality sauce, not a cheap one full of rubbish ingredients.
Just pop it in the microwave, doesnt need very long.
newtoallofthis2@reddit
Cheese I'll allow, the rest is confessing to a crime.

I love the full spectrum of both scotch eggs and pork pies. From the grey fleshed 99p a pop supermarket jobbies to a served warm with a jammy yolk on plate with an artful swoosh of wholegrain mustard and a few leaves of rocket for some reason £10 at a gastropub affair. Sausage rolls on the other hand? Gregg's can do one.

The west Cornwall pasty company who seem to be spread further were crap 20 years ago. When I'd occasionally grab one in Bristol.
Only difference with designated status was having to remove the cornish bit. Was no need for it to replace the pasty bit.
Depends if people are basing this on Gregg's tho.
markedasred@reddit
Ready Rolled pastry is your friend. Its more of a winter thing to make as that is turnip season. The secret ingredient is a dab of cream, apparently.
InternationalGlove@reddit
Our local butchers scotch eggs are sublime. Massive, warm as they cook them through the day with pink sausage meat, not that grey sad stuff.
elbapo@reddit
Slight disagree on scotch eggs. They have had a proper renaissance with decent fresh made scotch eggs on most upper end pub menus. It's my favourite starter.
It's just not in the supermarkets (albeit there are a few gourmet scotch eggs available). I only really recall the pale grey version anywhere in the early noughties- although I was a different demographic back then
cactusplants@reddit
Tbh, the m&s scotched eggs for £1.45 or whatever are damn good. Sainsbury's ones are nearly double and not so great.
At one point m&s had gastropub scotch eggs and they were still runny yolkers.
So damn good.
If you're near Bristol, there's a place called sandwich sandwich that do pretty hefty and tasty scotched eggs.

I think k lots of people think that the jelly "leaks" from the meat or something. It's just stock with gelatine that's added afterwords to fill voids. As others say though, heat it up and it's just meaty stock again.
Greggybread@reddit
Have one hot with mash and peas. The jelly is gelatin so when it heats up it turns into a savoury meat stock that keeps the meat tender and juicy.
markedasred@reddit
My own guilty pleasure. A very lovely girlfriend whose dad was mean about mine after he died introduced me to these, by way of noting him having it hot for his dinner. When I made one, I gave him an absent nod of respect for its transformation.

This is right at the top of my list when I head back to Blighty. A Melton Mowbray from Tesco will do. A bag of Real McCoys or Roysters and a bottle of Oasis to finish it off.

I really like pork pie pastry on Melton Mowbray pork pies (when it's crunchy) I'm indifferent on the meat and I loathe aspic jelly (it's a texture nightmare to me)
My husband says I'm unhinged (I'm ok owning this) cos I will buy mini pork pies cut them open remove the meat and jelly sometimes I put the meat sans jelly back in the pastry shell or i give the insides to him. Then just eat the pastry.
I am also a person who would also eat a bucket of kfc coating without chicken lol.

Sometimes they can be TOO porky. That sounds counterintuitive, but please allow me to explain.
Occasionally, youāll get to a part of the meat that doesnāt have a very good pastry ratio, so youāre forced to taste the filling without the addition of carbs. Sometimes the filling just tastes of pigā¦and no seasoning. Itās not my favourite pie-based scenario.

Radiant-Big4976@reddit
Suffocating in Co2 hurts is my opinion.
Master_Poet5106@reddit (OP)
What?
Radiant-Big4976@reddit
How pigs are killed in this country. They are smarter than most animals thus are able to tell they are about to be killed. So they will thrash around and fight to stop a captive bolt gun going to their head as they are able to tell what it is and that it will kill them. So instead we put them into a cage, then lower the cage down into a chamber of Co2.
It is complete agony for them, but they cant get out so who cares.
Master_Poet5106@reddit (OP)
I'd still rather that than have my throat slit and left to bleed out like halal killings. That's one of the great things about pork is you know its not halal
Radiant-Big4976@reddit
They are both as bad and neither should happen. Go look up a video of either of them if you have any doubts.
Sounds like we agree that halal slaughter is terrible, good on you :)
Master_Poet5106@reddit (OP)

Master_Poet5106@reddit (OP)
How long have you been vegan for? I went veggie for 6 years and I felt great for the first year but then I started getting bad heart palpitations and after trying everything from cutting out fizzy pop and junk food to quiting drugs and drink (which was a good idea regardless aha) I still didn't get better. I eventually found out that its possibly the lack of meat so I went and got a proper burger and some steaks and within a week of eating meat again I felt so much better. I still get heart problems after about a year of being back on the meat but I don't feel like I'm going to die anymore. Long story short, being veggie nearly killed me. Be careful

Pork pie with a massive dollop of mustard (yellow, English or German) is food for my soul. Great with pickle - fabulous picnic food.
Wheresmymindoffto@reddit
Adore it. Everyone else in my family hate it, so the "problem " I have is I like the big Melton Mowbray one but I don't like the small snack ones, and they don't keep long enough in the fridge for me not to have to eat lots in one sitting. This will likely get lost but a pork pie sandwich is a belter!
Master_Poet5106@reddit (OP)
How could you keep a pork pie long enough to go bad? Mine will be gone come morning
Wheresmymindoffto@reddit
I'm a fatty trying to be good.
Master_Poet5106@reddit (OP)
I feel that but they're too nice to not eat in one night aha
jimjamz346@reddit
Don't buy packaged crap, soggy pastry and it's full of shite. Get down to your local butchers and get a proper one. Can't beat a fresh pork pie, they are usually cheaper too
ThingyGoos@reddit
Those ones with the grey meat? I'd rather just be hungry. A proper one from a butchers? One of the best snacks
Howtothinkofaname@reddit
They are obviously great. But now my pet peeve: a good quality non-melton Mowbray one is nicer than an MM one of similar quality. Unfortunately most retailers seem to think MM is a mark of quality rather than style so itās much harder to find good non MM ones.
Straight sides and pink meat for me please.

I used to hate them as a kid but then they got rid of the jelly and now I eat them. That's why I only get this one brand even though people say they're shit. The thought of the jelly makes me sick
Karazhan@reddit
I can understand that. I find as I got older my tastes almost reversed, so I went from not liking jelly to liking it. Tell you what, if I get a pork pie with no jelly then you can have it, and you can send me the ones you get that do š

M&S normal size are the only ones that get the crust right. Ignore novelty small or large - this one is about the size of a large fist and has delicious spiced meat and great jelly ratio. But itās all about the crust!
ResponsibleAd3191@reddit
Awful things. Remove the jelly and we are onto something but that ruins the whole idea.
Master_Poet5106@reddit (OP)
The ones I buy have next to no jelly. Iv found that 1 in 4 will have a slight unnoticeable amount
Organic_Recipe_9459@reddit
If you donāt like pie too pink, stick to Melton Mowbray pork pies (when it comes to supermarket pork pies). I donāt eat any other pork pie from a supermarket. For it to be a Melton Mowbray it needs to be made from fresh pork and not cured pork. Which is why the meat is grey/brown and not pink, and also much much nicer.
Master_Poet5106@reddit (OP)
I tried them from morrisons, they're own brand ones and they were very pink. I'll have to check out some other supermarkets

I used to be lucky enough to work in Melton Mowbray one day a week. The Old Pie Shoppe was incredible. Irresistible. You could see them raising the pies at the rear of the shop, and the aroma was mouth watering.
It had a fire, unfortunately and the family sold the premises and business to a local pie firm, Dickens & Morris. They do a decent pie, but it doesn't compare with the original.
Best pies:
Your local Pork Butcher
Marks and Spencer
Pork Farms
Rasples1998@reddit
I like the big ones with soft pastry, full of jelly and pork. Not keen on the small ones that don't have jelly and mixed with other things like pickle; it's just a sour, dry, grainy mess.
theleagueofgentleman@reddit
Absolutely amazing if you get a butchers one, my family is originally from Otley in Yorkshire and theres a butchers there called weegmans that makes heavenly ones.
