I think the only thing I agree is if your doing otr and not really making any money.
Elderado12443@reddit
You will always find the negative if you are looking for it
mistman1978@reddit
Guy in the video is exactly right. OTR is only slightly better than Prison.
Sleeping in the truck should pay $200,000 per year to a company driver on a W2. Terrible life.
yeah-no-yeah-no@reddit
100% agree. Considering everything involved with OTR driving, no one should be doing that for less than $150,000 starting and $200,000 with experience. The trucking industry has bamboozled drivers into taking less than minimum wage and it’s a literal crime.
ler7421@reddit
150,000 to 200,000 is a bit much but I do think we should be getting 100,000 atleast if we keep a clean record.
Thepopethroway@reddit
Look up the average pay for a truck driver in 1980 and then adjust it for inflation. You will be shocked
EducationalStill4@reddit
This right here. People talk about their job is a prison or they’re a slave. If you don’t like your job, get a new one. If you can’t or don’t want to because the pay is too good, then suck it up buttercup. Dems the breaks. You gotta take the good with the bad.
To bring it back on what you said Elderado, you can find the negative if you want to making your life hell in the process. Or just focus on the positives. These kinda negative people get me all the time.
mistman1978@reddit
For most trucking is plan F. It's a decent paying job when everything has fell apart. It's not a choice.
Thepopethroway@reddit
I disagree. Trucking is one of the best paying fields out there, trade or no. Especially for the work involved. Sure, you can get reamed at a mega for your 1st year, but you don't have to.
I view this job as an absolute blessing, and I am thankful to God every day for having this opportunity.
COATHANGER_ABORTIONS@reddit
I'll say that I never expected to drive a semi, and was pretty opposed to it before signing up for a school a bit later on. Looking back, kinda wish I would have done it a decade sooner.
Key-Mycologist-7272@reddit
You can still make the best of it and with the right mindset it's really not that bad. I think the biggest mistake people make is not making it a point to get out of the truck as often as is realistically possible. You're driving all over the country, there is no shortage of fun shit to do on your 34 or even on your 10 if you budget your time wisely. One of the guys I went to CDL school with loves skydiving and had done more than 50 jumps before he even went to school. His goal is to go skydiving in every state in the lower 48 and I've seen pictures of him doing it in five different states so far.
Yeah if you're just an idiot and stay in the truck all the time and only get out at a shipper or receiver or consignee or truck stop or terminal it's going to suck ass eventually even with internet and a tv and a game console or gaming pc and a fridge and microwave and air fryer or whatever other amenities you have. But that is a choice. Fuck, go see a movie and get dinner somewhere nice once a week or every other week. Bring a fishing pole and tackle and go fishing on your 34, it's like 15$ for a one-day fishing license in a lot of states.
Reddit_Is_a_jokee@reddit
Also entry level positions don't just give away 6 figures. These companies want every fiber of your being and soul.
Thepopethroway@reddit
Every job I've ever had there's been people who think it's quite literally the worst thing ever. And then there's people that love it and don't want to do anything else.
Adlow9@reddit
"Half man half machine" was how I described it when I was OTR. Certainly not a prisoner tho.
Alternative_Edge_775@reddit
He's tripping. He doesn't have to sleep there. He could get a hotel. Most sleeper bunks are pretty nice places to sleep. Climate controlled, too.
Carnies who've had to sleep in the possum belly of a ride trailer would be grateful.
BackstrokeVictim@reddit
You have more room in an actual cell but despite that, bro is tripping.
dmt7679@reddit
I mean we are all wage slaves buddy
Existing_Meeting_318@reddit
He is definitely tripping, absolute nonsense!
GlitteringSession115@reddit
When I first started I got slapped in my uncle's pete and it had a coffin sleeper. Sleep in that thing and you will never complain about any bed again. Stuff has gotten alot easier, it's a job if you dont like it get another one. Nobody is forcing you to do any of this.
Dragon_the_Calamity@reddit
I’m not a trucker but I think this goes for any job in general. A day off doesn’t even feel like a day off it feels like you’re preparing yourself for another day of work
Un7am3d@reddit
Bro been out too long
Mattfoomoomoo@reddit
Idk fam, switched from local after 14 years to OTR me and my dog love it. But I’m also single and have no friends O/O so yeah it’s pretty great
LeveledGarbage@reddit
I couldnt do it, I preach the good word of local work, but boy and girls at the end of the day......you OTR drivers sacrifice so fucking much. Much respect.
Best wishes too all you on the road. We know the sacrifices you are making, it dont go un-noticed.

Federal prison you make 10c a day, stfu and quit if it’s that taxing on your mental
Ricemunchr@reddit
it’s a prison cell if you make it a prison cell. some people enjoy the solitude and for most driving is to get away from the bs in their personal life.
StrangeReason@reddit
OMG STFU! Ain't nobody forcing his ass to stay there!
jrstexasss@reddit
Hell nah, it isn't prison, you always have the option to go home, if you decide not to work for the company you currently work for (and don't want to work for an otr company again) you can just leave your sh1t somewhere. 🤷♂️🤷♂️ And, walk, bus, fly home.
Hopfrogg@reddit
My federal prison costs $1800 more a month than this federal prison. Sure, I get to wake up in the middle of the night and not piss in a bottle and shower in the morning without putting shoes on, but I'm not sure that's worth $1800.
RJonesLore@reddit
Personally, it doesn’t bother me. Plus, I love being out on the road for weeks at a time. Don’t much care for being away from my family for that long. But the fact that I get to have a strait week off at a time is incredible. I’d much rather work for a month strait and get a full week off, rather than work 5-6 days a week, go home with maybe a few hours of free time (though you’re so exhausted from work, it’s hard to enjoy it), go to bed, then wake up and do it all over again. And then what? A day or 2 off? A decent portion of the 1st day off you’re recouping from the week you spent working, and then the next day (if you’re lucky enough to get 2 days off a week) is spent dreading having to go back to work the next day. No thank you. I’ve done it, and I’ll never go back.

Not to mention, you can get out and go to inside a gas station or go outside and go out and you’re not locked in your fucking truck and you don’t have somebody that can tell you when you go piss tells you when to go to sleep I mean
that_Delfin_guy@reddit
i don't think they'll let me have all the stuff i keep in the sleeper area in prison...
Violet_Apathy@reddit
Maybe if you were a mafia don in the 70s. They don't even let you have bamboo sheets in prison 🤬
that_Delfin_guy@reddit
i love my bamboo blankets
Significant_Ad5335@reddit
Just upgraded to bamboo sheets and silk pillow cases with a down comforter. I sleep so much better now. Those fleece blankets and cotton sheets are nice but once you go bamboo, I don't think ill ever go back

Personally I love otr, it's like van life but I get paid. Coming from festival culture and knowing people all over the county. Its a great gig for me! I get to see friends at the most random times. All while getting paid. My truck is my home! I'm going on 10 years. Is it getting old? At times, it does. Overall, im happy and don't consider it to be prison. However, I do see the similarities, but life is what you make of it.

Naborsx21@reddit
It's a prison if you make it one.
I like living in my truck personally
ZealousidealIssue593@reddit
You're crazy bro. I like coming home everyday to my family. Imagine spending your whole life seeing your kids and wife only for a couple of days every month. You miss alot of events, birthdays etc. At least if you get a job thats home daily that pays 40/hr + you can afford a comfortable life and see them everyday smh.
Objective_Cap_9771@reddit

confusedbystupidity@reddit
Its a life style HE likes, because hes done it for 16 years... complaining or not... hes still doing it... its a life style, I was in the service... same damn shit... your up at 5am to go to pt, then work another 8 hours... then back to your barracks room to do it all over again the next day during the week... on the weekends you do whatever tf you want... same damn thing... if you cant handle a rigid regiment, as getting to the pick up and deliver on time... choose another field... or drive local... your ass is home everyday... but this dude is just complaining because no one else cares what hes got to say when hes talking to other otr drivers... just get back to your bunk and tug one out and relax...
meizhong@reddit
When I did OTR, that truck would be stopped for exactly 10 hours. I'd go off duty as I was backing into a spot, and I've have the pretrip done, oil checked, and truck running 9 hours and 45 minutes later. All I did in the back was watch a little TV and sleep. Mad respect to everyone with elaborate gaming and and entertainment systems, but fuck a job where I'm stopped long enough to think of needing that. I drove at night to avoid traffic and did at least 700 miles a day. If you ain't hustling for paper, what you hustling for?
inksterize@reddit
Customize your cab, and learn to balance your work and life. I couldn't go weeks without seeing my family and friends. Much less without enjoying my actual life.
AccomplishedLimit3@reddit
I live my life out in the world, a free man. sometimes I sleep a few hours in the truck, or in a bed or on a couch or historic hotels, etc. either it’s a way of life or just a job, that’s up to you.
Thegrandestpoo@reddit
This dude is an O/O in the Chicago area if I remember right. He pulls cans. He has/had multiple trucks. His whole schtick is running local(ish). Which is fine but everybody is different. I personally won't go out past a week. I've done that. Been out for months before. That doesn't work for me, but to some it might. I like the schedule I'm on now. I found the happy medium of making the money I want and getting home once a week.
Nicolastriste@reddit
I was driving 5weeks OTR and I’d be home for 5days. When I realized I couldn’t sleep well at home and I’d get anxious after 3-4days not being in my sleeper I quit that job and switched to local for a while. Now I work for a company that has driving 3-6days with at least 2 days off. Found the right balance for myself. It really messes with your head if you can’t find that balance that works for you.
SafariJim@reddit
As a company team driver, I DEFINITELY feel like the truck is a prison. The only time I get more than an hour to walk away from the truck is during my 34.
It's all perspective though. Our dispatch keeps us busy, lots of miles. Work hard play hard kind of thing.
Few-Chemical-5165@reddit
Well, he obviously is doing the job incredibly wrong. You see, having a job means going to work.Your commute to work is two feet. Your bathroom is the truck stop and your store and whatnot. You get back in the truck. You drive when you stop. You need a nap say after four or five hours. You walk two feet, you're in your bed. You'll have a nap. You drive the rest of the day, park a truck. Make something to eat in your truck. You have your microwave your electric frying PAN. Your air fryer whatever. You make dinner, you eat, you watch t v read a book. Call your family go to bed. You're never late to work because you're there. It's not a federal prison because you have more freedom. You can go pretty much anywhere.Your load takes you. You have freedom. You don't have a boss breathing down your neck every day. Every second, every minute he doesn't hover, or she. If you don't want to talk to them, you don't answer their phone calls. The quelcom, a text you don't have to answer. But you do because you have got responsibilities. Trucking it used to be freedom incarnate. Nowadays it has gotten horrible due to companies undercutting each other. Dot overregulating everything. And new drivers not caring about anything. Nowadays, it's become one of the worst jobs you can have, and you don't make the money we used to make thirty years ago. I used to make bank back in the 90. S early two thousands. I could go into the shop. You get five thousand dollars worth of repairs and still have a positive bank balance. But now I've been retired for 2 years. And there's no way in hell that I would ever have that kind of freedom financially in this day and age cuz, people just don't give a shit anymore. But if you're with a good company, and they pay you right and on time. You could make it a really good job.Still, you just won't get paid. The phenomenal pay we used to get. But it's up to you individually, either you work at it. Get a good company or you sit there on something. That's not a bunk wine, mope and drip and complain more about it. So do something about it or get another career dude.
Adept-Lettuce948@reddit
Lot lizards are not allowed into prisons unless it’s conjugal.
I_mean_whatever_dude@reddit
I think he makes a really good point, HOWEVER, I think everyone who drives a truck should do some OTR and every type of trucking they can. Especially if they've never really traveled before. It's an experience. Also, I think his argument supports spending money on your comforts if you're otr. Do a little work and investment on your living area and it can be more of a haven than prison after a long day. At least makes it easier.
Successful-Salt-5240@reddit
I do agree, obviously hes been in prison. And he survived prison. So mentally, that's how he's keeping himself sane. When i went to North Dakota and stayed in a man camp, thats exactly how I looked at it. Its like prison just with alot of freedom. Otherwise I would have gotten mentally fucked. I think too much about shit i shouldn't.
hitm4n1985@reddit
Some guys think that's the only way they make money; others think it's a way out of a temporary situation; then there's those that chose that type of line due to personal preference. Not 1 shoe fits all there driver. And door slinging / skateboarding / hopper bottom or hot dog.... No matter what you do.
BigDaddyDawg95@reddit
If bro thinks Going to sleep in the back of his truck is prison, he's never worked in an actual prison. Imagine being locked inside the walls for 12 hours a day, they search you every time you come in, the only difference between you and the inmates is you've got freedom to walk around and you get to leave, but you still don't have no phone no access to the outside world just you and them for 12 hours everyday.
Successful-Salt-5240@reddit
Which is why I refuse to sacrifice my sanity and not torture myself doing otr. I have mostly oilfield cdl experience. Apparently thats not enough to alot of these companies. Then I guess Im gonna be unemployed for a while. Something will come up. Thank god for gig work otherwise I would be desperate enough to do it.
Riyeko@reddit
I agree to a point.
If you're living in it away from home you should make it your own space regardless of how you do that.
That being said, this year is my 11th year and we are all praying to whatever God or Gods you can think of that my application goes through for a shag truck position at a local plant.
I'm done. After a whole decade... I'm done.
Lentezdelvalley@reddit
I’ve been in and out of incarceration since I was 12 up until 26. It got to a point where I was starting to feel more comfortable inside than out, like I was becoming institutionalized. I didn’t mind the solitude, the stillness, the routine. In fact, I grew to appreciate it. Being locked in an 8x6 cell teaches you how to be alone with your thoughts, how to sit with yourself and find peace in silence. That solitude became something I carried with me.
Now I’m about to hit the road OTR, and I’m pumped. I’ve been grinding to find local work, but as it’s been said, you need experience to get experience and that’s been a tough wall to climb. Even with my doubles/triples, hazmat, tanker endorsements, and a TWIC card, doors haven’t opened yet.
But at the end of the day, it’s all about perspective. You either see your situation as a dead end or as fuel to push harder. I’ve made my choice, I’m moving forward.
legendarygarlicfarm@reddit
How did you get your hazmat endorsement with that prison record? That doesn't make sense. Most has not places will never hire you with that kind of a record
Lentezdelvalley@reddit
Well for starters, I cleaned up my act and changed my life around. Also, if you go on the tsa.gov website, they have a list of disqualifying offenses. My record has none of those disqualification’s therefore I passed my DOJ background check.
legendarygarlicfarm@reddit
Good job on turning your life around.

Congratulations on changing your life for the better.
Try finding a large construction company in your area and see if you can get hired on as a dump truck driver with the potential to move into end dumps/low boys eventually. If that works doesn't interest you, there may be food service or delivery drivers as well. I've seen local places that want anywhere from 0-12 months experience around me, and that's how I got my start in my career change.
Lentezdelvalley@reddit
I appreciate the insight, thank you.

I have a Garmin OTR810 GPS. I installed a GB, NES, SNES, N64, and a PSP emulator on it. I currently use an 8Bitdo SN30 Pro controller with it. Last night I had a fellow driver come hangout in my rig, and we took turns playing Tekken 6 on my GPS unit. 😅
My goal is to be home 🏡 nightly.
For the time being...
I'm having a lot of fun out here.

People in prison don't have it this good.
I don't know about the rest of you but I got a 42in TV. Microwave, mini fridge. And a full PC setup with high speed internet access that I can play any time and title I want.
Not to mention a nice thick foam padded mattress!
This job is 100% what you make it you would think op after some 15+ years old dude would atleast bought a 300-800$ mattress to sleep on. It probably doesn't help that he's hanging work cloths in the bunk that's one of peeves the bunk area is the one place where work doesn't exist keep all that shit out of sight and out of mind; the bunks for sleep, relaxation and entertainment. You gotta manage your mental well being in this industry or it will chew you up

Arnhildr-Fang@reddit
I went otr teams for Schneider 1st day out of cdl school. I've been doing it...18mo now? Me & my codriver are different from most other teams out here, were usually out for 2mo & then home for a whole week. I wouldn't say he's right but he's not entirely wrong either.
I would say the closurephobic environment does legit mess with you...I suffer from nearly permanent cabin fever, i get minor to moderate paranoia, & i sometimes get hit with depression...its a rough life sometimes, and if you arent prepared it will do things to you...but a prison? I wouldn't call it that. I have amenities; food, drinks, entertainment, the fact I have a codriver actually keeps me MUCH saner, I've seen more of the world in my 1st 3mo than most people will see their entire life. I was in my 1st week caught in a blizzard & saved a family by being a storm breaker (guy practically forced me to eat with them as a ty when we found shelter), I've been a student and a teacher, I've met so many people of so many ethnicities, faiths, backgrounds, cultures...my grandfather & father were both knighted, took a code of chivalry...me trucking has let me carry that torch by becoming a "white knight of the highway".
So, though I'd agree it's a hard, brutal, and unforgiving life...it also is rewarding, liberating, an experience more fantastic than any fairy-tale out there. It's not so much a prison as it is a space capsule; sheltering you as you travel the vast spendor of the cosmos...but only if you're brave enough to make that launch.
JankyMark@reddit (OP)
Yeah I feel like it’s not for everybody, but you even got some local jobs that stay out all week but they stay in hotels during the week. But you can get tired of being in the truck
Arnhildr-Fang@reddit
Don't get me wrong, I'm looking forward to my home leave the week after next...but its a life I enjoy even if it felt like "learning to swim in a tsunami". It's one of those things where you fight a storm for so long only to discover you're the storm itself

In a sense he’s right, it’s a box and the trailer is the chains. It can get to you after awhile, I suggest folks get out of it every now and then and touch grass, exercise and attempt a social life. JankyMark@reddit (OP)
Yeah that can be a con to otr
HopeItMakesYaThink@reddit
Not gatekeeping, but it’s amazing how whiny he is after 16 years OTR. I had 2 years OTR, found it wasn’t for me, rode regional and dedicated at several companies since. You make your own work life balance after you get those first 12 months or so in. All jobs will demand a lot out of you when you start - and expect you to push when needed. It’s up to us if we prove ourselves to be valuable or just a door mat - getting trampled on by others. This guy has a very negative attitude and doesn’t seem like he’d be happy in any profession.
In short: trucking is like most other professions. Give and take. Feast and famine. Good and bad. In the end, it’s what you make of it.
Oh, and I wasn’t tough enough for OTR. I admitted that and moved to regional. Still sleep in my ‘cell’ five-six days a week but can take my 34 almost every week. Sometimes stuff happens, but rarely. Being paid a sub grand each week but my work life balance is amazing. Again, give and take. Need to sacrifice home time for more money. That’s almost every job on the planet. At least any job I’d qualify to fill.
JankyMark@reddit (OP)
I think he’s local but he just uses a sleeper cab
HopeItMakesYaThink@reddit
If he’s local, why is he whining so much about OTR? 16 years and he sounds as bad as some of the greens!

Maybe y'all have a happy family that loves you. But for me - I prefer being on the road vs being at home. I get peace and calmness and no drama (other than occasional bad drivers)... and I get go on adventures with my dog. I find being an OTR owner-op pretty relaxing actually.

Somebody's gotta get the beef from the midwest to the east coast.
The system works now, you put your time in - if it's for you you can keep doing it if it's not, a local outfit will hire you easy now that you've got experience and safe record. Plus it is a great experience I've been everywhere, hopefully never again.
RepresentativeFly156@reddit
I’m OTR, first time with a company I’ve been a local flatbed driver for 5 years before. It’s a downsizing situation for me because I’d rather pay mortgage and not a car note and insurance…..but OTR I have kettlebells, my own food, my coffee maker, water, clean clothes, vacuum, beat machine…I’m Gucci it’s a discipline things frfr. Treat yourself every once in a while, get sleep and stay hydrated and clean. That’s it
WhiteShiftry@reddit
Beat machine? You should sample the airbrake sound
natkingcoil@reddit
And the other sounds of trucking. Become the Tony Justice of that genre
daixso@reddit
OTR is what you make it I prefer sleeping in the truck compared to home I enjoy the noise and vibration especially now that I am running reefer. I enjoy the nomadic lifestyle seeing different places yes you end up at the same place many times but you have a whole country so you see enough to keep things mostly fresh.
If you're miserable in the cab and feel trapped or like it's a cell that's completely okay this is not the lifestyle for everyone this isn't a 9-5 job it's a lifestyle. You're not weak or anything else the road is less than ideal but you make the most of it.
NewkidOTB278@reddit
I think he has some good points. Trucking is what you make of it. I did OTR for 10 years. Afterwards, I got a local gig. Been local now for 7 years. It’s not what I use to make, but I am way happier, I am healthier, I can exercise on the daily, I am home every weekend, off every holiday, and I see my family. All of this is important to me. I make plenty of money to support myself and my lifestyle.
UOLZEPHYR@reddit
Same here. Just the fact of having a semi schedule, off weekends, plan my pay better and I sleep in my own bed AND I don't have to fight truck stop for a place to sleep.
So much better

I partially agree with him, however I strongly disagree as well. I'm almost a year in and I can definitely see how it can be depressing and you can get burned out extremely quickly, however I love what I do and I wouldn't consider my truck a jail cell at all. In my opinion, if I do thats when I need to find something else to do.
Truth is, im 21 and this is the most money I have earned so far, and im doing what I love? You can't beat that!

I disagree. The federal prison is better. You got sink and toilet, plus it does not shake and make a lot of noise while you sleep . It is also bigger , plus you get free food .

I have the same mattress in my truck as I do at home. I cook my own meals usually, make my own coffee, and do a little bit of walking around every day. I have had some awesome resets on the road. Reno, Vegas, The Hard Rock in Tulsa. This lifestyle is definitely what you make it. I do at times. I just need a little time out of the truck. My usual schedule is 3 weeks out 1 week home. I make pretty good money. Could I make more? Sure. Would my mental health suffer? Yep.
This career is what you make it. Every job sucks at times, but you can't let it get to you.
NFLTG_71@reddit
I think he’s Trippin I like truck driving. I like the fact that I’m OTR I like the fact that I don’t go home but maybe 60 to 90 days.

Yea sure a federal prison, that I can have a weighted blanket, nobody can toss my “cell,” I can keep a weapon on me for protection, I can get up and eat a milkshake, watch a movie and play video games in bed. But yea a prison. What a pussy.
Michael_Scott_234@reddit
I see those guys that have full gaming rigs in their sleeper and I want that for myself 😂
I agree though, you at least have to make that area something relaxing compared to what you do all day. Either that or go and explore on your sleeper time.
Independent-Fun8926@reddit
ITT everyone is shitting on him, even though in countless other threads, we have all agreed that the truck can become like a prison cell.
The job’s what you make of it. Sometimes it is really shit, really exploitative, really fucking awful. Other times it’s not so bad, even good or great.
Today, my experience has been fucking shit, and I am starting to feel like I am trapped in this fucking truck. My opinion of truck driving is that if I could do anything else and make almost the same money… I would in a heartbeat. I am not a happy trucker today. Try again tomorrow

Perspective is the problem here.
You can sleep in a hotel if you want to spend that money
You can cook and eat whatever you want
You can have a woman(late night terminal shower sex) -sex in the truck with the curtains closed...or open if youre into that lol
You have the radio, bluetooth connection
Wifi, hotspot
Games, movies
Lights and decorations
Take a reset anywhere
Ride a bike, skateboard, electric skateboard or e-scooter
Meet people
Drink...responsibly of course
If you are adventurous and secretive, take home time do some psychedelics, go to concerts
Really you can do a lot if you plan your time out wisely and are willing to rearrange some money making time here and there
Perspective is the problem. Make the most of your time. If you feel like youre working too hard then tough it out until you can go regional. Find another company. Whatever it takes to find the balance that works for you.
Definitely not a prison. Also you can just quit...

I think he's just burnt, to describe a job you've done for 16 years as a prison is a cry for help. Trucking isn't a long term option. Most local jobs are just as stressful. People's spending habits are what force them to over work themselves. I know plenty of truckers that make 20K a month but spend 21K. I don't know his situation but to describe a sleeper as a prison means it's time to go. This is how I felt working in cubicles.

I disagree with calling it a prison but I understand the sentiment. The idea of handcuffed to the sleeper birth after a long day is a lifestyle change especially if you’re driving REEFER. That’s the main thing I hated about OTR when I got my CDL.
JankyMark@reddit (OP)
Yeah reefer is probably way worse
No-Meat-1439@reddit
I felt this way.
But instead of staying 16 years I saved money for 5 years and picked a different trade, used some of money I saved to get through my apprenticeship pay in the electrical field.
JankyMark@reddit (OP)
Yeah most ppl do that if your making really good money and trucking
Sorktastic@reddit
he's trippin. When I was OTR I liked being in my sleeper at the end of the day, and it wasnt even that decked out. But different people have different opinions, and even if you do hate it, or think its a prison, it is a prison by choice. You chose to be a truck driver. You might not have had very many options, but they were there and you chose to be a truck driver. 16 years in? unless you have a ton of crap on your record, or live out in the middle of nowhere, but even then sometimes, you are choosing to be OTR. I got my first local gig with 8 months of experience.
Prison is forced on people, though one could argue that they chose it by committing a crime that got them sent to prison, but that is an argument for a different day. Being a truck driver is a choice, it might be the best of some crappy choices, but it is still a choice. If at the end of the day you feel like your sleeper is a prison, then you are choosing to sleep in self imposed imprisonment. What does this dude want? free hotel rooms at every truck stop? You know damn well as I do that if something like that did ever happen, they would be the dirtiest flea, lice, and roach infested hotels you could ever find
Plethorian@reddit
OTR is a mobile hermit life. There are few jobs which are more isolating - possibly fire towers in the forests, or shepherds.
indytrucks@reddit
That dudes an idiot. And I know plenty of “local home daily” people who but their ass and run their clocks out every day only to go home, sleep and do it all over again. I’m out 5 days a week and home two. Make plenty of money for it and get enough quality time at home on those two days that I’m content. It’s all what you make of it.
jrobski96@reddit
I've got a disclaimer her. Never been an owner/operator.
But as a public servant required to stayultiple hours, I will tell you his experience isn't out of the realm of concern for our brothers trying to live and make money. Just sayin
Waisted-Desert@reddit
Dude hates his life but doesn't change anything about it.
And there's zero requirement that you "have to come back and sleep here." That's your choice. Get a nice hotel room in a different city every night if you want. You'll go broke quick if you do, but that's a choice you can make. So stop calling the bunk a "federal prison."
I had a really nice bunk when I was OTR. Had everything I needed and nothing I didn't. I enjoyed being away from people for days at a time. I was over joyed when they started letting you redeem shower credits at a kiosk instead of having to the cashier at the fuel desk. Sucked that I'd still have to deal with people at restaurants or fast food when my groceries ran out.
manahannabananas@reddit
I started driving with beverage delivery and in a day cab. I hated the time schedules, sweating with hand trucks in crazy tight places. From there I gave OTR a shot and hated it too for a lot of the reasons he said.
Never been to jail/prison but living feeling like I was chained to the truck that way sucked.
Finally found a local job being a honeysucker and quite frankly between those first two experiences and this one was night and day.
Bamfurlough@reddit

Who says you have to stay with your truck 100% of the time? Back into a spot at a truck stop, talk to the driver behind you, talk to the associates inside, drop your trailer butting against the other truck’s trailer, and bobtail off the clock somewhere. Go to a park, go to a movie. You have an apartment 5 feet behind your seat. You don’t have a prison cell. You have freedom my friend. Just have to be willing to figure out ways to do what you want 🤷🏻♂️

everyone has their limit. I've seen the chillest dudes get a little loopy when they're out for a long while. we are social creatures, no matter how much we try to convince ourselves otherwise. This level of sedentary isolation can be very grating. There are things we can do to mitigate the harm such as getting active outside, chopping it up with randoms, prioritizing sleep, eating nutritious food and keeping carb intake low on rest days, keeping a journal, deep breathing excercises, and many many more I'm sure. jacking off in the back with your curtains closed (hopefully) in between watching Keanu reeves shoot people in the face point blank and Jeffery Dahmer butt fuck a corpse while sipping on a 2L mountain dew might not be the best thing for you.
JankyMark@reddit (OP)

Thats why I left.
The industry no longer respects drivers, because of the bunch of boot lickers (like some people on this post) who think that being taken advantage of is something to be proud of. They think that everyone should put up with it because they lack the self respect to set boundaries.
Not only that, but also the fact that people have been getting paid the same for years, while cost of living continues to go up. Its not even worth the effort at this point. Life is much cheaper when you dont live on the road!
JankyMark@reddit (OP)

With my Resume, Experience, Contacts, and references I can fall on a 120k a year minimum guarantee job. Doing years of OTR Flatbed Were absolutely necessary. Being willing to stay out weeks and sometimes months, was and sometimes is necessary.
But the bad comes with good. I have PTO, not unpaid Home Time, actual PTO. I have health insurance and retirement. This job can turn an adventurous young man into a millionaire who's seen the entire United States. You can also die broke, sick, and alone.
This industry is what you make of the opportunities you have and how hard you work to get there. Luck is also important, a few things went right at exactly the right time for me.
Do something specialized. If you want to make money you're touching freight, securing freight and pulling permits, or hauling hazmat. There's always going to be unicorn reefer and dry can jobs out there, but if you want a guarantee and an inability to get automated out of work (anytime soon) get specialized.
As for the prison thing... If you let yourself get that negative you'll hate life. I personally will never get tired of driving through the Shenandoah Valley, watching the Rockies rise out of the prairie, seeing Montana's beauty, or the desert sunset. Find the opportunities, don't dwell on how hard it is.
bmf1989@reddit
Comparing it to prison is pretty dramatic. You can’t leave prison. While otr can really suck at times and I can definitely relate to the feeling of “this is no way to live a life”, I could put the wheels into motion to turn that truck in and take my ass home whenever I wanted.
OTR, and anything in life really, is what you make of it. If you treat that cab like a prison cell it’s going to feel like a prison cell.

I’m at the tail end of my first year and I love it. I’ve taken my teenage son with me, I’m home once or twice a month, I’m making money, don’t have a boss breathing down my neck, I have my sleeper set up so I can cook and play online with my friends, and every day offers something a bit different. Now I don’t intend on doing OTR for the long term but I’m enjoying my time while on the road.
I also don’t think of my sleeper as a cell, I’ve never been much of a people person so when I’m done for the day it’s my retreat, a cool, comfortable place to kick back in to read, cook, game, and FaceTime with friends and family. I’m also getting into this in middle age so that might be coloring my perspective.

I hiked, tried local restaurants, I grilled out with a camping grill, went to local events, and rid my bike to attractions. I played video games in the back trained my dog to be an elite trained machine. I even packed in Montana rest areas and spent days fishing the river. It's what you make of it. Nothing more, nothing less.
HardShellChocolate6@reddit
I don't agree with it being a federal prison. But I do agree there is more to trucking than just being over the road and away from home.

I’m getting into the concerts and tour loads and I have no problems dedicating myself to a 6 month tour or even longer if one arises. Bc yes you mostly always go back to the truck to sleep but I also have a life at these venues outside of the truck and the work I do. Sometimes I sit and I can go explore the city I’m in or meet up with friends and family. And that breaks up my time on the road and a lot of times, these artists, they themselves want to go home or else where for a little bit so there are breaks in a tour for you to get completely away from the truck. Just my personal experience and thoughts.

I've been to jail, not prison, but the comparison is rather stupid.
The dimensions are similar, but you should be happy about that: they didn't use to be. Check out some of the older trucks where dudes had to sleep in a little box behind the cab. (roughly the size of your storage boxes aka dog boxes today).
You also have the option of literally sleeping anywhere else; the bed is just offered as a convenience. You can sleep at hotels, a friend's house, air bnb, a fuckin tent...
Bottom line is: YOU'RE IN CHARGE of your truck. If it feels like a prison; that's on Y.O.U.

I guess you could also sleep outside if that doesn’t work for you? I don’t really get what the hell this guy’s point is. He makes a claim but then doesn’t back it up with any supporting details. Any job might as well be prison with that attitude
jgremlin_@reddit
No one is FORCING you to sleep in the sleeper. The company is providing you with one. Whether you use it or spend your own money on a hotel, stay with a friend or setup a tent somewhere is completely up to you. No one in federal prison has that option. This guy is whack.

Its perspective really. Personally speaking, this job broke me in easier enough by starting my OTR career during COVID.
