My uncle left this car at our house for years, what I I do with it
Posted by traSHkompactor@reddit | projectcar | View on Reddit | 88 comments
He left it at our house for way too long and says he doesn't want to scrap it cuz he thinks it's worth money. I would like to ask you if you think it is worth money because I think its only worth something to a collector but who TF wants this I've never met anyone.
NoOilStart@reddit
Give that thing a chem dip and some new paint!
Few-Chemical-5165@reddit
That would have been information that would have been nice to know but... You can probably still buy floor pans for it. He just cut him out welded them in and you got them as good as new. But it all depends on if anybody wants to keep it for the rest of their life, if it's worth the time and effort. If it's a work of love and passion, it's worth it if it's not, if you're trying to flip it not worth it.
Few-Chemical-5165@reddit
Is it a complete car? Is the engine and transmission and differential still in There? Are they numbers matching? If so, you could put it online and somebody would buy it. And the fact, there's no rust holes, just surface rust, that's pretty impressive. So yeah, it can't be worth a lot of money
traSHkompactor@reddit (OP)
You can see through the floor...
JustAnother_____Life@reddit
Lol everyone wants gold for scrap, might be worth 1k but most likely too rusted out to be worth anything
elroddo74@reddit
Someone would absolutely want to restore that.
ScottyArrgh@reddit
Agreed. That’s an awesome project for someone, without a doubt.
The challenge will be finding that person. OP, take a bunch of high quality pictures and post in various sites, such as Bring a Trailer. It’s been sitting there for a while, so sitting a while longer while you reach to out people shouldn’t be an issue.
Good luck :)
M0NEYGR1P@reddit
J10 good truck yes
ecurb599@reddit
Give it to me!
Extension-Ask8211@reddit
Restore it , bring big bucks at auction, or enjoy it V8 wagoner
Greasemonkey08@reddit
It's a Jeep J10. Those are, in fact, minor collectors items. It's essentially the grandfather to the modern Jeep Gladiator and likely worth a few thousand just in parts, especially to anyone rebuilding one. They haven't been produced since the 70s, so finding parts is almost impossible.
Spiritual-Slip-8309@reddit
The axles alone are worth keeping. They can be restored and be pretty nice trucks. If you don't keep it I'd say start at 1500 and give someone the chance to bring it back.
durableretard@reddit
I’ll give you a grand
velowa@reddit
If it has a title it’s an easy sale. Figure out if it has a title and if your uncle even wants to sell it. Neither of those things are clear from your post.
Chris71Mach1@reddit
And if it doesn't have a title, file for a bonded title with your insurance carrier. It'll make the truck a lot easier to sell and worth a bit more.
Your uncle either doesn't genuinely want the truck or he's using your house as a storage lot. Either way, you get the truck. If your uncle argues, then draft an invoice to show storage fees in excess of any potential value of the truck. If your uncle argues further, then deny him access to the property (and subsequently the truck) until such time as he pays the (hopefully very expensive) storage fees to get it back, and make him get it the hell outta there.
velowa@reddit
You don’t file bonded titles with insurance companies, you do it with whoever does vehicle registration in your state. Here’s the form for Montana where OP lives. https://mvdmt.gov/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/MV10-Application-for-Break-Bond-Title-0524-Fillable.pdf
Chris71Mach1@reddit
I only know Texas laws. Sorry if I missed if OP is in a different state.
velowa@reddit
You don’t file for a bonded title with your insurance in Texas either.
boriginals@reddit
Sell it to me, I have one half rotting in my back yard that needs.... we'll, everything!
Thestrongestzero@reddit
draw a dick on it.
RacerX-56@reddit
That’s a badass truck. What the hell is wrong with you?
CartoonistNo9@reddit
Clean it to death and advertise it in the higher side of things. I mean really clean it inside and out. Clean scrap gets way more attention than dirty scrap. I knew a guy who made a living buying tired cars at auction. He’d polish hell out of then, vacuum and shampoo the interior then put them back in the auction. Never did any mechanical work at all.
0bamaBinSmokin@reddit
Those Jeep pickups are super desirable to Jeep people. I know because I am one 🤣🤙
If the body and frame isn't too rusted you'd be surprised what you could get for that. Id start out at ~5k if it's in decent shape. Even with no motor it would be worth a fair bit more than scrap value.
Trumdog23@reddit
Shoot, I'd be interested in buying that
traSHkompactor@reddit (OP)
Make an offer and I will see if my uncle will budge, we live somewhere in Montana
Trumdog23@reddit
Shoot, thats a big drive, but I dont mind :) im thinking $1500
traSHkompactor@reddit (OP)
ill let my uncle know right now and see if he'll take it

Desperate-Half-5070@reddit
If I was older and richer I would pay like 1.5-2k for that thing, unless it's completely rotted away. Ppl LOVE these old jeeps, was my dream car for a long time.
donkeyhoeteh@reddit
I'd give both of my kidneys to be able to own and restore one of these!
NuclearHateLizard@reddit
I'd say give him a week to remove it, otherwise it's scrap value is going in your pocket
qkdsm7@reddit
Great move, when it would sell for 4-8x scrap value within a few weeks...
NuclearHateLizard@reddit
One man's trash
cpufreak101@reddit
It's an uncommon jeep model that's a collectors item in Jeep spaces. Throw up an ad for double the scrap value and it'd be gone
Critical-Length4745@reddit
It has some collector value. Advertise it on autotrader. Someone will buy it and take it away.
NoRegret1893@reddit
Well it's not really a "hot ticket" in collectible trucks but all fixed up and shiny it could be worth $15K--$20K. Of course it'll take you $40K to get there, but what are classic cars about, if not to lose money? :)
Seriously, someone would buy that either for parts or as a hobby, but it's very very rough so not worth much.
"More than junk, less than what people tell you."
The old Jeep that everybody wants is the Grand Wagoneer SUV from the 80s. This isn't that.
elroddo74@reddit
This is more popular than any jeep from the 80s. More cool and way rarer.
NoRegret1893@reddit
Not more than a Grand Wagoneer though, which is worth 2X this pickup.
It is rare, but what matters is how much people want one and how much they will pay. Being rare doesn't matter if nobody cares about the vehicle.
For sure, he'll get some interest, but geez, it is in rough shape. Whadya' think? $1,500--$2,000 as it sits?
elroddo74@reddit
It really depends on the stuff ya can't see. In NY that's not rough for a truck that old. And ya can find wagoneers more than cj10s. I'd guess here that might be $4 or 5k if it ran.
NoRegret1893@reddit
Geez, I dunno. Lots of rust, missing parts. I mean, look what you can get for $12K:
https://classiccars.com/listings/view/1779443/1979-jeep-j10-for-sale-in-chandler-arizona-85286
Seems to me you can't get from $5K to this truck in the ad for another $7K.
rudbri93@reddit
get onto a full size jeep facebook page and see if anyone has any interest. its probably not worth a lot but someone might be interested in parts or something.
traSHkompactor@reddit (OP)
Thanks You

JRVYukon79@reddit
If it's a V8 and a stick get it going. Those things are tanks.
GrouchyTax5748@reddit
I bet rebuild carb some fresh fuel guaranteed tank has varnish in it and maybe go through plugs wires disturbitor as long as nothing majorly wrong with it it would fire up. If you were closer, I'd be all over this. Dad had a full-size jeep, and we rebuilt the 258 straight side with an oversized cam. He went through the 727 in it and rebuilt the reared. That thing was a beast they had a feature called feather tap in 4wd. One wheel starts to spin you tap the brake pedal, and the opposite wheel, engages, and starts spinning. Many great memories in in j10 and learned a lot.
guybro194@reddit
I want
GrouchyTax5748@reddit
Give it to me. I'll take good care of it. Get the title and fix it up, and you'll have one of the toughest damn trucks around. Dad had one with a straight six. That thing would pull.
DoomsdayForeplay@reddit
That grill started in 79 and the eyebrow on the top of the cab ended in 80 so it should be a 79 or 80 j10. The 401 was offered until 78.
Not that everything is necessarily original. It’s a Jeep, but that gives you an idea of what you’ve got.
There’s a tag on the firewall under the hood on the drivers side that can give you lots of info for its original options and the vin can tell you a fair bit too.
Awesome trucks, particularly with that eyebrow cab. They all rusted away on the coast where I live but I’ve always wanted one. It might be because it looks like every toy truck I had in the sandbox as a kid.
joshmoney@reddit
Those look great with the gladiator grill and headlights swapped
Regular-Lobster-3171@reddit
You've really looked after if for him, looks lovely!!
traSHkompactor@reddit (OP)
He literally just LEFT it here and moved away without us wanting it here in the first place so screw him lmao
Regular-Lobster-3171@reddit
I get it, I was kidding. I cant understand people leaving such a cool truck to rot.

Schten-rific@reddit
I would offer you $1,000 unseen, but that's easy for me to say because I'm 2,500 miles alway lol.
But these are fairly sought after trucks, unique and genuinely ruggedly built. I wouldn't accept a dime under $1,000. If you could spend a weekend and confirm the engine & trans spin freely (not get it running, but showing the engine/trans aren't seized) I'd double that
Different_Fly2025@reddit

It's not worth a lot, probably a lot less than your uncle things it is given its current condition, but probably more than you think it's worth. Depends on a lot of things.
There are people who want them. I wouldn't mind getting one, but I wouldn't have the time for it right now.
The fact that it has been at your place for 10 years and not his is problematic. He should be storing it not you. There is no incentive for him to do anything because it is out-of-site-out-of-mind. It will continue to sit there. Depends on the relationship you have with him I suppose.

In Montana
SirBobSwarley@reddit
I'm a big fan of these trucks and there's a pretty significant following on Facebook and such for them. There's a full size jeep subreddit too, r/FullSizeJeep, where you could post it for better insight on it's value.
At a glance, it looks reasonably solid and worth saving as just a beater driver or something. If it's a stick, it could be worth a little more, and a lot more if it's a 401 under the hood.
Clean up around her, give it a wash and vacuum inside and post up more photos!
siberian@reddit
Not that valuable, but super cool. If you were local I'd probably buy it to restore it.
MidWestMind@reddit
If that has the 401 engine, people will pay up to 4-5k for that alone.
porktent@reddit
Vice Grip Garage just did an episode on one of these. They do have pretty good value to Jeep fans. I know where two are near me and I would gladly take them if I could get them cheap, but I've never asked about them. I have too many other projects right now.

Where I live in Georgia that is worth about $1500, advertise for $2000 take the first offer over $1000, scrap value will be around $600.
IronSlanginRed@reddit
They are super popular. But also super prone to rust. Get all that crap off it and if it can be saved and isnt too rusty its absolutely worth something.
