Strand-type means games with large, spaced out worlds with locations that need to be connected between with an emphasis on the travel between the locations and not on the locations themselves. Basically the idea is that the terrain and the world itself are a bigger part of the story than the individuals and the items.

You can say many good and bad things about Kojima, but the only thing he is for certain is a hipster. Not even derigatory, he is proclaimed anti mainstream and doesnt want his stuff to be normal, thats literally his goal. he is an artist and the longer he works in the industry, the weirder his art becomes.

i mean he (and I'd argue more importantly half life) invented the modern narrative video game at least. Things like Day of the Tentacle and text based choose your own adventure-y games were there long before, but there weren't many games that had both a serious story and actual gameplay in equal measure. Think doom where the story is like in a crappy porno, or quake where there ain't one.
