What was it with South Americans and German Stahlhelms and leather field gear?
NthngToSeeHere@reddit
Most of South America was "Germanized" militarily at the turn of the 20th century, some still have remnants. They recruited German/Prussian/Austrian commanders to modernize their militaries. They also sourced their weapons and equipment from the same places. After WWI even saw more of it, and captured/surplus Central Powers equipment was cheaper as well.
Colombia was actually friendly if not allied with the Axis powers until 42-43. They then had a regime change and they distanced themselves.

These are actually Austrian helmets we only ever had Austrian stahlhelms as well as vulkanfiber ones

Were these the machine guns used in the Banana Massacre?
I always assumed that the only MGs sent to Latin America by that point were either water cooled or SMGs

They probably used the schwarlose which was the army’s main heavy machine gun at the time. Or the hotchkiss

Thanks. I’ve seen very little info to shine light for my morbid curiosity.

Probably not. These weren't available until the next year.
Colombia always had pretty up to date weapons. They were in an arms race with Peru through 30s then one with Venezuela post war.
They fielded the largest variety of Mausers besides perhaps China and refurbed and built their own post war into the 60s.

Colombia also purchased a quantity of Solothurn S2-200's / MG-30's in 7mm around the same time

I get that this is a posed picture, but where are there weapons and gear?
NthngToSeeHere@reddit
Hey! Someone identified it. No one was able when I posted this pic to r/whatisthisgun.
I guess I should've just asked here.
