I call it “Ramen Snack”. Crushed ramen dusted with the seasoning packet.

We used to do this all the time when I was a kid. Crush it in the bag, open it carefully, season, the hold the top closed and shake.
It was so common that I didn't even realize you were supposed to cook them until I was a teenager.
HereOnCompanyTime@reddit
I used to eat them raw when I was a kid, but then people told me it would give me worms and child me needed no additional proof to determine that was a fact, so I immediately quit.
Inn0cent_Jer@reddit
I used to eat them like this when I was a kid, but I simply just stopped eating them this way at one point and forgot it was even an option until today!
I wonder if it holds up now that I'm an adult 🤔
Wise-Fruit5000@reddit
I'm 31 now and still eat them this way occasionally
smashadams1017@reddit
Are some like this like four days ago lol it still holds
russketeer34@reddit
I'm pretty sure there are some variations sold for this exact eating experience
xMrn-@reddit
Definitely. I had some from Korea that were meant to be eaten this way.
alicelestial@reddit
i was told if i didn't microwave them first the noodles would absorb my stomach acid like they do water when you make them properly. and then i'd get sick or have a giant noodle-lump in my stomach or explode or something
TheTipsyWizard@reddit
Lol the worms story was in my area as well when I was young!
CeeArthur@reddit
I feel like that was a 90s parent thing, telling their kids if they eat something they'd get "worms"
lazerj1mmy@reddit
I was told it would give you cancer as a kid (by some other kids) and everyone stopped doing it around that time.
Lost_Operation_369@reddit
Same.
ICantLeafYou@reddit
Not sure if it was cancer, but I definitely heard it'd kill you or make you sick, so the kids at my school stopped it.
skatingonthinice69@reddit
My mom always told me they would swell in my stomach and might make my stomach explode.
Shadowchaos@reddit
Haha I came here to see if anyone else heard that, someone told me the same thing as a kid
Kitty_Chic@reddit
Just remembered a kid in our class who used to sell "Chinese noodles", which I later realized was just MAMA noodles
lunavoirs@reddit
Yeah, i did the same thing in grade 7/8. Id crush mine up real small tho so when I finished doing the shaking part, I could just shake the little pieces into my mouth w/o worrying about big pieces.
I also had not one thinks regarding the enjoyment of eating it cooked. It was good enough dry imo, so I never really cared.
Honestly tho, now that I have a half thinks to cook it, I feel like the way I make it sounds weird. I won't use the spice packet as a "broth", but instead I'll mix it in w someone Alfredo sauce like its regular pasta. Its damn good imo, but idk if anyone else does it like that.
Admirable_Ardvark@reddit
I like boiling it in water without the seasoning, drain the water, move the noodles to a hot buttered frying pan, add the seasoning, and fry till it's slightly crispy. And if you're feeling fancy add some meat. 10/10
Weak-Snow-4470@reddit
I'm going to try that!
Admirable_Ardvark@reddit
You won't regret it!
mazgaoten@reddit
So much this
lunavoirs@reddit
That actually sounds good
gml1996@reddit
Not trying to be rude if you were just being silly, but if you are one of many learning English and on reddit, the word you were looking for when saying "not one thinks" should be "not one thought". Similarly, "have a half thinks" would be better as "have half a thought" or "have half of a thought". Have a wonderful day!
lunavoirs@reddit
My first language is English. Im not sure where you are online, but i thought this would have been understood as a joke. Im just trying to have fun, not learn my first language over a joke-like play on words. Im not trying to be rude either, and im not offended by what you said. Im just more surprised bc this came out of nowhere...
gml1996@reddit
There are far more people learning English on reddit than people who use "one think" multiple times as a "joke". It sounds more like someone who is learning English. It's not that hard to understand why someone would be helpful to people trying to learn nor is it out of nowhere. I even acknowledged you were possibly being silly, but you but you took offense anyway. Oh well, stay miserable.
MoultingRoach@reddit
Yeah, on the playground, we broke it way smaller than thale pic.
Interesting-Fly-3458@reddit
The best part was when you get worms in your poop. I remeber watchibg the little white guys swimming around your warm brown logs
MoultingRoach@reddit
What are you talking about?
lunavoirs@reddit
That was my instant question after reading that too lol
IndiviLim@reddit
Warm brown logs means poop.
No_Obligation4496@reddit
No idea where you're from but in Asia there are bags sold specifically for this purpose.
dishearthening@reddit
They sold ramen at the snack bar at my school for this exact purpose.
Costco sells a version of crushed dry ramen that's a little lighter than the normal stuff. A lot easier on the mouth if you've got weak teeth like I do. Someone brought a pack to work once and I've never regretted not having a Costco membership more.
NotHandledWithCare@reddit
I didn’t do this as a child but I did it a lot in jail. Soaking them in a bowl of warm water will only do so much and at a certain point this is just chips.
the_ammar@reddit
this is the correct way
op doing some fancy Tupperware bullshit and still had the nerve to post it.
also the chunks are still way too big.
DevoSwag@reddit
Yes, it was all the rage when I was in elementary school. It became such a popular thing at my school that if you didn’t bring your crushed up dr my ramen with you for lunch and recess you’d get made fun of 😭. It was so funny!
andromeda335@reddit
Lolll same, except it was like 10 of us who shared one packet at school lol

Did you ever get the kool aid kid ? Like packet of it and sugar I guess in a baggie ? Wowwww. Wound up.
Frydendahl@reddit
I think in Turkey they literally just sell a snack version like this you just eat without boiling the noodles.
ICantLeafYou@reddit
I grew up doing this in the '90s in elementary school.
MoultingRoach@reddit
Can I just guess, was it the Mr noodle brand?
ICantLeafYou@reddit
It absolutely was.
MoultingRoach@reddit
Yep. It was just the thing you did back then.
ICantLeafYou@reddit
I still keep a small pile of Mr Noodle in my pantry nowadays, backup for when things get really shitty and I don't even have better noods like Indomie.
Great-Environment-35@reddit
Didn't it stick to your teeth?
MoultingRoach@reddit
No it didn't.
OGBRedditThrowaway@reddit
But it literally has cooking directions on the package with giant pictures of a pot of water and steam and a stove.
Psykpatient@reddit
Same
LurkerBerker@reddit
I was once so desperate just to have dry crushed ramen that I bought a bowl (my school had a teacher that sold instant ramen at lunch) and tried to crush it with a comically large pen toy for kids like I was using a mortar and pestle. Then realized I removed the lid to do it, so I had to cover it with notebook paper to shake it around.
stick to the bag form kids
dirkrunfast@reddit
Yeah we did the same
SmallTalkEmmy@reddit
They sell noodle snacks to be eaten like that too
dabigchina@reddit
Shin Ramyun is the best for this, but for the love of god don't use the whole packet. Shit is way too salty when it's undiluted
DopesickJesus@reddit
Nah. The brands specifically meant to do this are the best for this.
shin gets too salty if eaten as a cracker.
TalesoftheMoth@reddit (OP)
Yeah, usually leave some in the packet, but I always have some powder left at the bottom of the container.
ltjohnrambo@reddit
The powder is so good. I made a dupe recipe and we put it on all kinds of stuff.
stephaniejeanj@reddit
Wait, you made a dupe? Please may I have the recipe?
ltjohnrambo@reddit
1 tsp fine sea salt (not coarse kosher or sea salt) 1 tsp MSG 1 tsp beef bouillon ½ tsp gochugaru ½ tsp cayenne (adjust to your spiciness preference) ½ tsp ground red chili flakes (optional) ¼ tsp garlic powder ¼ tsp sugar ¼ tsp ground black pepper
unfeelingzeal@reddit
link to recipe? 🙏
amateur_mistake@reddit
I will dip things like raw carrots and celery into it.
Simple-Mastodon-9167@reddit
Also aren’t those noodles dried in palm oil ?!?!
nstablen@reddit
I use the other half to make a cup of broth on the side
nstablen@reddit
Or save it to toss popcorn with it
ToneBalone25@reddit
Indome as well. It has two wet packets.
Ionovarcis@reddit
The best ‘wrong’ place for Indomie is… hear me out… as a topping on leftover pizza you’re gonna reheat in the oven/air fryer.
A thin crust pizza/ramen sandwich is the human experience I signed up for.
Ulkreghz@reddit
Heat pizza in a frying pan / skillet with a little water and pop a lid on it - it'll reheat and remain moist as though it was fresh. Air frying or microwaving pizza can leave it dry and miserable.
Ionovarcis@reddit
Ah - I see what you’ve done and you’ve fallen for my pitfall! Thin crust pizza is important to this - it’s already just a topped cracker. You don’t need the bulk of a thicker style of pizza, cause the noodles will be there.
I agree with your pizza tip, but is not relevant to this delicious monstrosity.
Ulkreghz@reddit
Oh to be a younger and less British man and thus have the teeth to do this... Anything harder than a Ritz / Cheez-it might as well be made of plasteel at this point...
Ionovarcis@reddit
St. Louis style pizza’s thin crust is honestly super brittle (a specific thing to seek out outside of the area)- and the ramen in question would be cooked first - like a yakisoba pan. But pizza 😅👍
Troe_Away_Count@reddit
This is the best way.
You basically pan toast the bottom, and steam the cheese and toppings.
Brush the bottom with a tiny bit of olive oil and you get this perfect crunchy undercarriage on top of the sauce perfect cheese and toppings from the steaming.
Ulkreghz@reddit
Olive oil is the ideal but given the sub it felt a little generous to assume people had the ability to fry let alone add ingredients that cost more than pennies 🤙
dabigchina@reddit
I've never done this with wet packets. It seems kinda messy.
Su152Taran@reddit
I recommend u to search Mamee Monster
the-queen-of-bling@reddit
And my family used to judge me for cooking the noodles al dente
Datpotatosandwich@reddit

camoure@reddit
Here in Canada as well - these were all the rage when I was in elementary school in the 90’s
Wide-Discussion3094@reddit

maiege@reddit

24122020@reddit
there are everywhere in South east Asia
Agringlig@reddit
I occasionally see imported Chinese noodles like that. They are thinner and more cooked than normal noodles and mixed with seasoning already.
Tasted nice but package is tiny.
yukichigai@reddit
I think I know the ones! I get 'em too. Package is like half the size of normal ramen, but then again that's perfect if you just want a snack versus a full meal. They also cook damn quick if you do want 'em soft, quick enough that I can just put 'em in a mug with not-even-boiling water and have soup in a few minutes.
Damn, I need to pick up more. Only ramen I buy in a 20 pack.
faygodungeon@reddit
no no you crush it in the bag with your knee and then open bag and break open the seasoning

doggysmomma420@reddit
Yup. We did this in high school in the 90s.

I used to call this prison popcorn. It was a shameful amount of my late night study meals back in college

White woman "inventing" flat taco (aka tostada) vibes.
This has been a thing for decades.
Relevant_Call_2242@reddit
I’m sorry, wait… are you eating chunks of uncooked ramen noodles?!
EnvironmentEntire201@reddit
They're cooked already, just dry.
iLostMyDildoInMyNose@reddit
Yeah they’re like crispy crunchy and delicious
TalesoftheMoth@reddit (OP)
Yup! They’re crunchy and delicious.
Relevant_Call_2242@reddit
I’ve never seen or heard of this before.
TalesoftheMoth@reddit (OP)
You should try it! Better than you would expect. Just dont use the entire packet of seasoning. Too much salt.
CHRISKVAS@reddit
The noodles are cooked and dried. Prepackaged versions of this are super common in Asian grocers.
fuduru@reddit
Yeah that's a common thing. I grew up doing.
blood_bones_hearts@reddit
I used to eat them like a fun dip....dip the broken pieces in the seasoning bag.
hogwartshunter@reddit
Ive been doing this since I was a kid. My parents used to tell me I couldn't eat it that often cause id get worms in my belly. Still no worms 🪱 lol!
KittiesRule1968@reddit
That's horrible. You need to be arrested now lol.
vicarofvhs@reddit
I would always make the ramen, but rather than making broth, I would drain it and then just stir the seasoning packet into the noodles. I still actually prefer it that way.
But I never ate a brick raw. I was not on that level, I guess.
_btt@reddit
Had noodles sold to be eaten that way in my country when I was young. They were called Nooda Crunch.
Ornery-Practice9772@reddit
I just crush them in packet, add seasonings and eat them like chips
ProfessionalGrade423@reddit
Uncooked ramen makes a great topping for an Asian style salad with cabbage, chicken and veg and a tangy/sweet sort of sauce. It’s crunchy and adds great texture as a salad topping.
TalesoftheMoth@reddit (OP)
Damn, that’s a good idea!
ProfessionalGrade423@reddit
I knew a lady who used to do it, she was the worst but it was a damn good salad. I’ve tried to make it a few times but never got it quite right. I’ll have to try again soon because I still think about that salad 25 years later.
GiantA-629@reddit
This was all the rage when I was in elementary school I was born in 81 for reference of age .
C4llist00@reddit
Omg I was at an Asian store today, and they had bags with this concept. I remember as kids we’d just smash them and mix it with the seasoning, like you’re doing basically. I remember we’d also get yelled at, yet here we are, having snack versions in stores!!
weaselfaceassfucker@reddit
We used to use one teaspoon of water and then shake it up and call it hobo popcorn
Giuseppe246@reddit
Asian mart I went to sells this like a bag of chips.
Blooky_44@reddit
I think of this as “dorm ramen”-although our version didn’t involve anything as fancy as a bowl. The portability and lack of need for any kitchenware at all was most of the appeal.
cutefudge1@reddit
tbh these ramen packets are better crunchyy
TalesoftheMoth@reddit (OP)
When I cook them, I don’t cook half, and dump them on the cooked half before I eat it.
Efficient_Ant_7279@reddit
Used to do this too lol. In fact it’s still not unlikely that I’ll do it again
TalesoftheMoth@reddit (OP)
It’s a perfect camping or late-night snack!
Grigori_the_Lemur@reddit
Smear it lightly with miracle whip so the flavorant adheres.
redditrnumber1@reddit
Yummy, it's also really tasty if you let it sit in hot water until the noodles get soggy 👌
neptunianhaze@reddit
The dedicated kids at my school would carry around a baggie of limes or lemons and drizzle a little bit in the mix.

My younger sister and all her friends used to spend the summer running around with seasoned bricks of ramen. They didn’t even break them up. Those were the days.

Used to do this all the time as kids. Definitely don’t realize chips were a luxury at the time. Still would eat this struggle snack🤘.
TalesoftheMoth@reddit (OP)

Pugilist12@reddit
I’ve always been ashamed/embarrassed that I do this. Thought I was the only one. I genuinely think it’s better than the soup, and it all ends up the same in your stomach. It’s so crunchy and salty. Once every few months I crave this.

This is a go to snack for my kids. Let me be very clear that we have PLENTY of food, always lots of fruits, veggies, hummus, cheese, yogurt, all the assorted goldfish and cookies. But for some reason this has become like their comfort snack.
It’s also something I occasionally would snack on 20 or so years ago high out of my mind and broke.

There's a brand of Taiwanese instant noodles made to be crushed and eaten without cooking as a crunchy snack. Had this delicious peppery seasoning packet. Loved these as a kid. One day I brought a pack to school and some other kids saw me eating it this way, so soon after they all started eating their ramen noodles raw. I got kinda concerned because I wasn't sure if the other instant noodle packs were safe to eat this way lol

My kid does this minus the seasoning. I call it “raw doggin ramen”
rom439@reddit
Ramen snack sounds like you translated another languages word for it back into English.
Chiopista@reddit
Some ramen works better than others, because they have a crunchy texture. Some are kind of stale before you boil. Top Ramen was always the school go-to.
Glittering_Sun_6971@reddit
My cousin used to do this when we were kids/teenagers. Until she ate 3 the same day and got sick. I had to clean it at 3 am so my grandma wouldn't punish us haha.

One of my favorite snacks/meals to get from a random gas station after a swim meet. We called it “ramen chips” and it was by far the most cost efficient way to satiate the dark hunger that lives inside all adolescent swimmers

I knew a lot of people who did this in middle school. I hated the texture of uncooked ramen so I never did it. It's been fifteen years since I last saw someone do it!!
minthairycrunch@reddit
At that point you might as well just grab a spoon and the salt shaker and mainline sodium straight up.
TalesoftheMoth@reddit (OP)

Oh my gosh I completely forgot about this……this used to be dinner for weeks at a time dear lord in heaven. I can literally taste it….chicken right? 🥲
