I was shocked when I found out the political views of harper Lee.
The entire time, I thought jem and scout were foolish children learning the error of their ways, learning to never trust ghosts like Bill radely, and that tom Robinson was the main antagonist.
Never mind that when the book was written, stuff like civil rights was highly controversial and many of its notable advocates were murdered. Pretty much the opposite of PC
i read a fanfic once about a gay nazi expecting him to change for the better, then learned the gay part was supposed to be the bad thing to overcome, and that by raping polish teenage girls
This isn't related and it might get me canceled in the future but I'd like to take a selfie with the dude, not cause I like him or anything but like how many people out there can say they took a selfie with Hitler
I was coincidentally pondering about this recently, "would I take a pic with someone I and most people dont like but they are famous, so why not? Besides, I can say I took a picture with that person"
Animal farm also fits here, because it is written purely from trotskyism position, as "I was so smart and helpful and those swines threw me away and made communism bad". Book literally was delayed in printing by publisher because of such message.
This is not at all true. Orwell was more influenced by dictatorship and totalitarianism than communism. His novels draw on his experience as a British soldier in Burma. There’s a great book called Finding Orwell in Burma that explains it better than I ever could. People just project whatever political leanings are convenient for them onto his work.
What's amusing to me is that reading about that time Trotsky seems like a fucking moron. Unworkable internal economic systems like cracking down on the black market, emphasis on communal living that drove people nuts, etc. it was literally Lenin's moderation or ditching of Trotsky's various ideas that got the soviets through the civil war and famine.
In fairness the tsarist system was also hopelessly broken (strip farming, limited industry, micromanagement) but those early years were ROUGH
Yeah, Trotsky was not only a moron, but also a pest, because when he saw that not many communists were agreeing with him, he started somewhat sabotaging movement, also his diplomatic failure was reason communists signed peace treaty too late and had to give some lands to Germany and its allies after exiting WW1 (first draft of document was simply about leaving war, but because Trotsky took to long with negotiations, Germany conquered some of empire's lands and added those to second draft). And when Trotsky left USSR, he one of core ideas of his movement was to suck up to every opponent of USSR. It speaks for itself that while every communist was killed/imprisoned in Germany of 40ies, trotskyism was existing there without problems.
The Pigs were the brave and heroic vanguard that fought to maintain the farm, and the animals that revolted were reactionaries and opportunist traitors
Big one is Captain Yossarian in Catch-22. He's lazy, unmotivated, utterly unpatriotic and his only goal is to quit WW2 as quickly as possible and go back home because of how much he hates Europe. Its a magnificent read and a great prediction of the Iraq War decades in advance. Alot of people though begin to dislike Yossarian as he goes through his campaign, he becomes paranoid, angry, completely numb and just unravels plagued by constant flashbacks of his major fuckups and leading to increasing amount of disorientation. Quite a few people can't make it through that portion, as they think its BS and didn't realize Joseph Heller wrote it as a satirical autobiography. Joseph Heller said Yossarian was who Heller wished he was back then because Heller was all about the nobility of war until flak hit his gunner (similar to the book) and he realized he just wanted to go home so he could stop watching his friends die but didn't have the balls to make it happen like Yossarian or to call out the brass on their bullshit and make their lives as much of a living hell as they were to him.
The series and movie isn't as utterly bleak and depressing as the book though, the Italian civilians in the book are brutalized and the closest thing to a villain (Mess Officer Milo) has figured out how to cause local area famines so he can pay young women in food for prostitution rather than money for example (along with horrific violence done to some of the civilian characters).
Yeah, but the point or cohesive view may not align with yours. Hence separate art from the artist.
Maybe I’m wrong but I’ve always understood the saying as you can enjoy the art and try to understand the artist’s views/opinions but not necessarily endorse them. A lot of interesting stuff are made by weirdos.
Art is expression of the artist. They're intrinsically linked. But the art is saying something about the artist's views/opinions. If you don't like what it's saying, then that's fine, that is allowed.
