Has anyone else started to notice people our age being the slowpokes in the left lane?

And think bro we all promised ourselves we’d never be that a-hole, you’re messing that up dude

61 years old and i’m part of the left lane mafia, still speeding in the left lane. hardly use the right lane at all.i hit 80-85 mph on the interstate. its a must in Louisiana. everyone here thinks they drive a stock car. the national anthem of the roadways around here is i cant drive 55.
mytwistedwords@reddit
42 years old. Got my license just a few months ago, so I'll have to get back to you on that. :)
Throw-away17465@reddit
For the first time? Congrats!
mytwistedwords@reddit
Thanks! Been using my parents' car to gain some road experience, like a good teenager!
Throw-away17465@reddit
I was a late bloomer too, got mine at 28. I know the struggle! Congrats again!

I'm usually on cruise control right at the speed limit, but I'm in the right lane. Makes for a nice relaxing drive, uses less gas, and anyone who wants to pass can go left and speed right on around. I won't be the one dealing with the tickets.
BoltsGuy02@reddit (OP)
Nice! I’m a 5-7 over guy and can’t stand the 10 under in the left people
Funkopedia@reddit
I'm a hypermiler. Slow in the right lane.

Prius?

It's not me, boss. I'm with you; the law says the left lane is for passing; if one isn't passing, they're not supposed to be there. Full stop. If one is in the left and someone comes zooming up behind them, one is legally required to GTFO of the way.
And I've never - not once in my 45 years - heard anyone justify left lane abuse with anything that can't be described as "indignance" (AKA "I'M already going the limit, so nobody should be going faster than ME," AKA 'things my silent-generation Dad used to say.')
To whom it applies: YOU ARE NOT A DESIGNATED 'PACE CAR', and you don't score extra points with law enforcement by pretending to be them.

I never really got the passing only thing; I drive in cities but even in suburbs you gotta get to the left a lot for left hand turns, I don’t need to be going like 80 when I just need to get to the grocery store parking lot. Are people driving turnpikes and interstates on the regular?
BoltsGuy02@reddit (OP)
I’m referring to multi lane interstates, driving in residential/business areas it doesn’t really matter
More-read-than-eddit@reddit
That makes sense. I just hear it so much that the frequency of that complaint doesn’t seem to jibe with how people in my world actually drive other than on rare occasions.
VWBug5000@reddit
Left hand passing lanes have only ever referred to driving on the highway
More-read-than-eddit@reddit
Are you people really driving that much on highways that you care?
VWBug5000@reddit
Yeah, we do.
Most people in America drive on the highway daily to get to work and back. The average commute time in the US is 30 minutes each way.
More-read-than-eddit@reddit
I have mostly lived in nyc, and for the most part, people i know in los angeles don’t commute in from orange county or similar. I take santa monica blvd in the mornings which is technically a highway i think, but no one is using the lane on the left for that purpose (if anything it is slower as a turning lane). When i take the 405 or 110 up to the valley sometimes it’s mostly just a free for all and that doesn’t bother me. Supposedly people from small towns prefer to live there due to very short commutes?
also growing up in ny it seems the “passing lane only” thing wasn’t drummed into us since it is not a technical law there last time i checked, just a courtesy many observe. My ex from another state was always aghast at it (though again, “always” was one road trip we took on the thruway and maybe one L.I.E. Drive to Montauk).
VWBug5000@reddit
Ok, that makes a lot more sense as someone from NYC. Had a family friend from there and she was in her 40’s before she learned how to drive.
More-read-than-eddit@reddit
Ah, well I'm not in that camp exactly, I just see most people driving in very congested freeways where anything goes, or much more commonly on surface roads (and certainly not in long-distance highway scenarios daily where people are just cruising along and choosing lanes). My understanding was that if anything, most of the country has SHORTER commutes than people taking their surface roads in NYC/LA, which is hard to reconcile with frequent/daily freeway usage.
VWBug5000@reddit
I think comparing this to driving conditions in NYC is where the disconnect is. When I was living in northern California, a simple 30 minute commute was considered a short commute and spending the majority of it on the highway was normal. Once or twice a week I’d need to commute to the main office in the Bay Area and that was 90 minutes each way. All of that was considered quite normal.
The huge amount of people working from home these days has changed that a bit, but there are plenty of peeps still making those trips and the left lane passing rule is quite popular amongst the regular commuters
boogs34@reddit
I got arrested for driving with intent to kill 20 years ago cuz I was going 100 in a 65 in a southern state. I have not broken the speed limit since the.
FreezingRobot@reddit
Damn, they don't fuck around with naming laws down south
misterlakatos@reddit
Was that in Virginia? I have heard from countless people how insane the police are there.
boogs34@reddit
Yep
misterlakatos@reddit
I have known several people over the years from there in addition to many people who have driven across that state several times. Every one of them has said the same about the psychotic police and traffic laws there.
BoltsGuy02@reddit (OP)
That’s excessive speed and crazy they were able to charge with “intent.” People who drive crazily above the speed limit are dangerous, people camping in the left lane doing 10 under are also dangerous and inconsiderate.
Traditional_Entry183@reddit
I'm not about to risk getting a ticket. I got one for going 76 in a 70 passing a truck 25 years ago, and I've had a clean record since then. 75 or so is my top speed, and I just use the left land to pass then move back over. Same now as when I was in my 20s.
BoltsGuy02@reddit (OP)
That’s how it’s supposed to be done
cornholio2244@reddit
Yep, fucking tired of it. Last time this happened, I was driving through Texas and I couldn't lose this left lane hanger doing under the speed limit. In Texas, they have signs with a phone number to report intoxicated drivers, so I called and reported them. A couple miles down the road they got pulled over, and I passed with my middle finger extended. Fuck around and find out.
LemonPuckerFace@reddit
I have a highway commute and mostly have to deal with old boomer men going 0.000001mph faster than the person they're "passing" or oblivious entitled middle aged Karens going 5 under while they're checking Instagram.
If I ever become Earth's president, I will enact a law that states if you are driving in the passing lane and not actively passing, you will be targeted for an airstrike after 60 seconds.
This law will also apply to people who sit in the fire lanes outside of grocery stores, food couriers who think throwing their flashers on means they can park anywhere they want, and people who needlessly stop in a merge lane.
Enigmatic_Observer@reddit
I’m the one speeding in the left lane
NotSoSpecialAsp@reddit
Yeah I'd like to say I don't speed as much as when I was younger but that'd be a lie. Maybe a bit less recklessly now though.
Adrasteia-One@reddit
I've wondered if it's that or just that the younger folks are driving faster these days. At least where I live, it sure seems that way. I've long since turned into the grumpy old man who shakes his fist and shouts, "Don't you know how to signal!!??"
BoltsGuy02@reddit (OP)
Not in Minnesota, I get stuck behind people doing 5-15 under in the left all the time
PilotC150@reddit
I’m convinced these days I deal with more people going under the speed limit than people going significantly faster.
BoltsGuy02@reddit (OP)
Yuuuuup, 494 is ridiculous
Adrasteia-One@reddit
Oh no, I'm sorry to hear that, hehe.
Won-hwa@reddit
Nah. I’m still speeding in the fast lane💨. A lot don’t use it as a passing lane and their slow asses mess with the flow of traffic.
BoltsGuy02@reddit (OP)
👊🏻
misterlakatos@reddit
As a New Jersey resident/driver, these people make life really difficult for the rest of us. It's bad enough trying to drive in this state, and when someone decides to go the speed limit or lower in the fast lane, it creates a very dangerous situation.
Quenzayne@reddit
I don’t go in the left lane if I can avoid it. I go the speed limit in the right lane and the rest of the world can go around.
jmac11281@reddit
Thank you for letting me pass you on your left. I feel as though there are few drivers like you.
caramelpupcorn@reddit
I'm right there with you bro. Cruise controlling it at 65 mph to avoid a stressful drive and a speeding ticket. It's the "ah, going to bed early is truly the life" of driving.
BoltsGuy02@reddit (OP)
Mad respect
Express-Cow190@reddit
I set my cruise control and chill. I use the left lane to pass if the guy in front of me is either too slow or doesn’t know how to control the gas pedal.
PussyFriedNachos@reddit
Everyone is high man, chill out 😴
BoltsGuy02@reddit (OP)
Go be high in the slow lane, some of us are being productive
KietTheBun@reddit
I used the left lane for passing… and in my state, there’s also left lane exits. But mostly passing. The last thing I need is some chode going 95 riding my ass because he thinks the left lane is his personal speedway.
