Like I said in the headline I know it's an old styr rifle but I have no idea what ammo it needs
coldafsteel@reddit
You'll need to take it to a smith to mesure it.
There are a few likly options, but as this is a heavily modified gun there's no reason to think it also hasn't been rechambered at some point.
Neither-Cloud9239@reddit (OP)
what are those options
coldafsteel@reddit
But why does it matter? You going to buy and box of each and see what happens when you load and pull the trigger?
Seems like a good way to blow up a rifle and possibly lose your face.
Why not just get the right answer to start with from a pro?
Neither-Cloud9239@reddit (OP)
yep you got me i was just going to blow up my face
REDACTED3560@reddit
Just because a round can chamber, it doesn’t mean it’s safe to fire. There is no way to know for certain without having a gunsmith check it out.
gun_runna@reddit
No no no. Let Darwin get his. If it seats it YEETS
deathlokke@reddit
Normally I'd agree, but with a gun this old I'd prefer to preserve it.

Aint that the gawd dang troof!!'b
EmergencyAnimator326@reddit
Yeah you can fire 308 win out of a k98 that doesnt mean you should do it. do Not shoot that gun before you are shure IT IS for modern 8x57JS and Not 8x57J one will Work fine the other one will Most likley blow IT Up. Look for markings Like 8m/m or 8mm JS ON the barrel If you want to live dangerously and wont Go to an gunsmith. Eben If you shoot a few rounds and nothing Happens ot can still blow Up every Shot you Take. Dont be stupid the pressures of 8mauser are verry high...
YeNah3@reddit
dawg.
Diligent-Parfait-236@reddit
It has the factory barrel, so there's a pretty good reason to think it probably hasn't been rechambered.
Putrid-Tutor-5809@reddit
I thought it was just the SKS that had a French Tickler model
pandahki@reddit
That's a sporterized Gewehr 88, and it's most likely chambered for 8mm Mauser (7.92x57mm). Check the barrel for a "S" marking, which means its been modernized for the newer Spitzer-versions of said round, otherwise you need to handload to old 8mm Mauser M1888 specs with round nose bullets.
Franticalmond2@reddit
What on earth makes you think you can’t fire full power 8mm Mauser in these? You absolutely can.
EmergencyAnimator326@reddit
Not If IT IS 8x57J and you shoot 8x57JS full power loads through These. The bore Diameter is bigger on JS guns and the pressures are higher so yes you can defenerly fire those wrong rounds with tis gun but IT will most likley explode in your face. there we're numerous cases in wich gew 98 with the smaller bore we're Shot with Spitzer bullets and explodet in soldiers faces. The 88 IS way weaker. Dont spew this bs that you can shoot full power JS loads in potentionaly J guns. This IS dangerous
Franticalmond2@reddit
I never said anything about firing JS spec loads in it if it’s still in original J chambering.
If you use the proper bullet, you can absolutely, 100%, load to full power.
And frankly, the 5 thousandths difference in bore size is not going to cause the gun to blow up. You’re the one spouting absolute BS. Also, complete and total bullshit on your claim about “numerous accounts of gewehr 98s blowing up.” Credit where it’s due though, I haven’t seen some nonsense that funny in a while so I did get a good laugh at it.
EmergencyAnimator326@reddit
Cause therewas a switch in the early 1900s for a bigger bullet from J to JS and If you shoot full power modern ammo in a J rifle IT will Most likley blow Up in your face The Gewehr 88 IS Not neartly as strong as the 98. In 98 you can load the case full of the fastest burning Pistole Powder and IT will only blow the primer Out and the gasses will explode the mag and parts of the Stock Out the bottom. The 88 does Not have the pressure Relive holes ON the bottom. IT will blow Up spectacular
Neither-Cloud9239@reddit (OP)
I have a gun in 8mm Mauser bolt wont close
pandahki@reddit
There's many variations of 8mm Mauser, and if the bolt won't close, then it's not the correct version of 8mm Mauser. You need to slug the bore to find the bullet diameter you need to use, and only handload for this rifle. I would stay within the original 1888 round specs to be safe. This rifle has a tighter bore and can handle lower pressure than store bought 8mm Mauser has.
ilikerelish@reddit
Gew 88. It takes 8X57j or JS. The former uses a .318 bore, the latter a .323 bore. The gun may not be locking because the bullet is hitting the rifling at the end of the throat because of the bullet diameter.
EmergencyAnimator326@reddit
And do Not fire JS in a J gun ever! Will damage the gun and potentionaly Blow IT Up in your face
MrPanzerCat@reddit
Gunsmith since this likely couldve been rechambered. If you know its an 8x57 barrel, slug your bore to determine if its 8x57J or 8x57JS since gewehr 88s were originally chambered for patronen m/88
PIatinumPizza@reddit
Hi, I had the same question for the same rifle the other day this guy u/MrPanzerCat had some very helpful information.
Feeling_Title_9287@reddit
Bubba! No!
r/milsurp can help you with finding out what version of 8mm mauser that it's chambered in
ReactionAble7945@reddit
Slug bore
Cast chamber
Then come back.
Kevthebassman@reddit
Get some Cerrosafe and make a chamber cast, we’re not psychic.
