File ASAP report?

Basically busted the mode C without ADS B out on a XC with a student. We were on flight following the entire time and ATC did not inform us of any ADS B out issues. When landing at the airport an aircraft informed us that we weren't showing up on their ADS B. And when seeking flight following back atc let us know that we weren't coming up on ADS B, but they were able to track us with our Mode C transponder. I didn't realize but there was a placad saying that the ads b out on board was disabled. I am afraid of letting the school know about this incident since they're not too happy on mistakes especially since I am new. What should I do?

90% of CFIs… shouldn’t be CFIs.
Legit its own scam industry.

My personal policy has always been: if you have to ask, file.

Definitely always cover your butt in any away no matter how minor, BUT if it makes you feel any better, I’ve gone into my local Class C several times with a transponder only and I always call ahead to get permission and let them know I’m coming and that I’m negative ADS-B, and they act like I almost wasted their time calling and act like they could literally not care any less that I don’t have ADS-B because I have a transponder.

File.
I'm curious about the placard that you didn't see. Was it obscured, hidden, camouflaged, hard to see, or what? Why did neither of you see it?
If ADS-B was disabled as you described, was there a circuit breaker pulled as well? Why did neither of you notice this? Is there not an item on the checklist to check CBs?
Does the FBO/school have a way of notifying students and CFIs as to the aircraft status? Is there a squawk list that should be reviewed?
Part 61 or 141?
Damn it! Never mind, I'm retired. But I just can't shake off my federale way of thinking. Sigh.

Own your mistakes. This counts double when you're new and/or inexperienced. People are human and make mistakes. Best time to admit your mistake (especially if it can't be remediated) to your employer is when it happens, second best is right the heck now. If they let you go for that, you'll have to draw your own conclusions on the quality of their operation and accept it as a lesson (and consequence). Starting any job/career by hiding mistakes is a slippery slope. Integrity is what you do when no one is looking, yes; your reputation is based on how they feel about it when (not if) they find out.

You can tell the school or the FSDO can.
There’s some sort of automatic reporting that is monitoring and alerting for ADS-B occurrences. There’s a good chance
It’s not the end of the world but the question will become why you as an instructor weren’t aware of inoperative equipment on the aircraft.

Automatic reporting alerting for ADS-B occurrences? When did this become a thing?
CobblerLevel7919@reddit
Hiding a mistake is a far greater offense than the mistake itself; it’s a character thing. We have fired people for not reporting things that would not have gotten them fired.
And like others have said: file the report!
lurking-constantly@reddit
When in doubt, fill ASAP out
Shinsf@reddit
Why do i have to say this two times in two days.
File the fucking report.
MaverickTTT@reddit
It’s really not that fucking hard, right? If you have to ask if you should file the report, file the fucking report.
UNDR08@reddit
But how else is the OP suppose to know that they’re doing the right thing without seeking approval from strangers on the internet? Thinking for yourself is overrated, the collective hive mind is the way to go. /s
CaptainsPrerogative@reddit
If you ask yourself, “Should I file an ASAP report?”, always file an ASAP report.
RBR927@reddit
The time you took to write this post would’ve been much better served filing the damn report.
poser765@reddit
I’m not going to lie. I didn’t even read the post body.
HARD RULE. The answer to the question of “should I fill out an ASAP for this” the always, without question, YES.
hawker1172@reddit
I dont think your flight school has an ASAP program. Do you mean ASRS?
itsnotbroke@reddit
Depends…larger schools have ASAP programs now.
But if a school had the filter to have an ASAP program, they probably wouldn’t have the culture that would lead the OP to feeling like they would be in big trouble.
N420BZ@reddit
There is a huge difference between the ASAP program and an ASRS report.
I am not aware of any flight schools that have been granted an ASAP program, but I could be wrong.
Mobe-E-Duck@reddit
I didn’t even read the post. Just file the report. Never a good reason not to.
InternationalBag7290@reddit
Always better to file.
cazzipropri@reddit
Yes, basically file always
Key_Slide_7302@reddit
Mistakes happen.
Talk to either your Chief or Asst. Chief, own the mistake, file the ASRS report. If you’re transparent with them, they can be ready when FSDO calls instead of being surprised.
Right-Suggestion-667@reddit
When in doubt fill it out
cficole@reddit
The answer to this question is always yes.
hmasing@reddit
YES.
