I wanna suggest something to you. before going to archive or use kiwix libraries. choose Internet itself as if you were online. I mean to define the most important content for you on the long-term . such as wikipedia, some recipe sites like grimgrains and youtube special cooking channels , stack overflow or the great Q&A websites in general . music stuff is not useful. also dunn go deeply for games . archive or download the wikiwel site for natural medic reference . know what's valuable to you .

I think off grid computing is of limited usefulness unless it’s being used for some automation or data indexing. Add arduino IDE and the arduino docs to make your future more efficient and capable. Maybe some GitHub repos for example code too,

Well the point isn't to do sophisticated stuff offline. The point is that we have a desire to escape the negative elements of the internet. If someone is struggling with pornography for example, it's almost impossible to not have access to the internet because it's such a centerpiece of modern life. I myself noticed a big change when I was disconnected for a while, even when I had access to the same material. For example, I downloaded like 30,000 YouTube videos and had them stored locally. I noticed that when I was on the YouTube web page, I felt compelled to watch the next video when I didn't feel that way when the same video was offline. We aren't trying to go full Amish but at least have something that works well enough so we don't have to return to the internet for everything.

Sorry, I think I had my comment removed because I said re + tard + ed. Nah those people are seriously "re +tard+ed". They can't even change their own tire and they act like they are gonna survive a comet hitting their house. We are just wanting a way of getting the internet back down to a healthy level. The constant stimulation, conspiracy theories, and fear porn is seriously causing problems with my own and other people's mental health.

If only there was some kind of place, where people could get guides on how to change their tires. Maybe a database of human knowledge... Eh, too bad, it doesn't exist. Guess when a natural disaster happens and some infrastructure goes down, people will just go without knowing, being able to access those services, or recreate them on their own. That really sucks doesn't it?

Well to be fair, I think that it's something they can control when their lives are a bit nuts. It's kinda along the same lines as with the masks during the virus. By itself I don't mind, but people take things to an unnerving extreme.

I don't support that for this reason. Historically normal terms have been made into terms of shame and then replaced with a half shameful one. For example the term 'slow'. If a kid was 'slow', it didn't mean that he was incapable but just took a little longer. That word was made to be shameful and replaced with the r-tard word. That was supposed to be the word that was more polite. The same thing has happened again and now the new word is something like educationally challenged. The idea is nobile but it doesn't really solve anything. It's like saying "fat" is a shame word and so people resort to something like "mass challenged" or something even dumber then the first word.

It certainly doesn’t solve anything on its own, I agree. Hate is everywhere. I just personally don’t feel that continuing to use a word that is overwhelmingly used to convey hate is a position I want to be in. The word doesn’t have any continued utility in a clinical sense, it’s just been turned into an insult levied at people who are easy to feel superior to

Well just to say this, I don't think I've ever called someone who was just dumb that word. I'm ridiculing the stupid people I'm talking about because they choose to be the way they are. Those people used to make me a bit nervous because like I said they couldn't even change their own tire, yet would tell me how many weapons they have, and how they would "bug out" and shoot "zombies" that tried to approach them. That was the more civil ones too. They really do need a little bit of ridicule to encourage them to come back to reality.

I recommend another experiment: try using an alternative youtube frontend, like invidious, freetube, or newpipe, and see if you still get sucked in. Becuase these apps aren't made with the purpose of turning a profit, they lack many of the hostile design features youtube implements. I also recommend trying the open source, privacy respecting frontends of other apps, like reddit. For me, new reddit can be very addicting, so I use old reddit and the slide android app.

That's easy just download everyting you need and the set up a local network responding to all requests pointing to that one source. Basic TCP/IP and networking skills is all that you need

Except for perhaps the kiwix server/browser setup, I don't think I will need tcp/ip at all. I'm trying to have everything self-contained within one machine. I might even go as far as disabling networking all together. I appreciate you though.

The one I was using was in my possession for at least 2 years, so it was at least that old. I think I got the static binary from the website. I don't remember what version it was. It just did what I needed it to do when I needed a break from the world. I do want to say that I really do appreciate the kiwix software. It really is one of the more useful things out there.

As a side note in case anyone didn't know, you can use Kiwix for a lot more than just Wikipedia. I used it to snag a copy of the entire of Project Gutenberg (free books!) and stuff like the Arch wiki (btw) as well. You can also get stuff like TED talks archives and Khan Academy videos. The main thing I want is to have the ability to do common computer things but without relying on the internet. The reason is that the internet has become rather toxic in recent years. It's difficult for most people to completely pull away from the internet because something requires them to keep coming back. Right now having the debain repo and the kiwix copy of wikipedia make this feasible, but I was looking for more ways to replicate the internet without actually having to connect to it.

Once upon a time it was better configured to download en masse. It's actually the way it operates internally, mirroring data servers internally and "shuffling" data items from one server to several others with rsync. Every data server makes its data externally available on /*/items/ (one directory per filesystem) via rsync modules and https, but several years ago the rsync modules stopped being accessible from the public internet. Now "rsync rsync://ia902209.us.archive.org::items_29/" just blocks. Then some years ago you stopped being able to view the items in an /*/items directory. You used to be able to browse for example https://ia902209.us.archive.org/29/items/ and see all of the data items on that filesystem but now it comes up blank. But if you know the item name it's at least still browsable: https://ia902209.us.archive.org/29/items/archiveteam_reddit_20220127003324_b15b6cb2/ So, yeah, it's harder because you need to know the name of the item and which filesystem it's on and on which data server, but the contents of every item are exposed and available for access.
