Off grid computing

A while back, I had a raspberry pi with the kiwix version of wikipedia on it. I also had downloaded the whole repository for the device. It was great in that it did a lot but was disconnected from the rest of the world. I ended up giving the raspberry pi to a kid I know, but I was talking to some of the guys from the church I go to. I think it would be great if there were accessible computers that did most things people need from the internet but wasn't connected to the internet. I know about kiwix and I also know how to download the debain repository. Is there anything else that y'all can think of or point me towards? Thanks.
