Where’s the best birria tacos 🌮 in north Dallas?

Been feeling very disappointed with the Mexican cuisine since I moved to Dallas from California! Can someone please help me find some amazing birria!
cerulean94@reddit
Damn bro that’s crazy. There are some out here that def hang with cali.
Moctezuma in Irving is the best and is ALL Birrias.. Ramen, Grilled Cheese, etc.. it’s amazing fs
rangermang0@reddit
The absolute best!!
rangermang0@reddit
Holy shit, I've been waiting on someone to ask this. Please try this place in Irving. It is a hidden gem, I promise you will not be disappointed. It's called "Taqueria Moctezuma" off West Walnut Hill Ln.

Thank you!!! Excited to try it out soon!

I usually eat pretty healthy but I would have this as a cheat meal once or twice a month and it makes me miss living over there!! Enjoy, hope you like it!!

Even better as Birria Bao Buns.
juandl21@reddit
I had such high hopes for this place and it was ok at best. Tried it to get it out of my system, but I don’t think I would go back. Maybe I went on a bad day.
mattgoldey@reddit
I tried to go today for lunch not realizing they're closed on Mondays 🙃
j_husk@reddit
It's being closed on Saturday that kills me
mattgoldey@reddit
They could be raking in the cash on weekends. That place is surrounded by apartment buildings. Built-in customer base of people that could walk to the restaurant.
arkansaslax@reddit
Everything at cris & John’s is awesome. Gotta respect a restaurant with like 2 front of house staff and seemingly 30 back of house. Thank god for more parking at the new location.
Here-To-Be-Messy@reddit
Maybe I went on a bad night. Got the platter to try multiple things and most of it was meh.
Guson1@reddit
It’s very trendy meh.
Here-To-Be-Messy@reddit
It was a year ago when I tried it. Maybe it’s better now idk.
timidusuer@reddit
I'm with you. Their quality has wavered since 2022, especially with their meats.
username_user13@reddit
Have they moved locations yet?? I’m dying to go back but I don’t wanna go until they move 😅
arkansaslax@reddit
Not yet but looks like they must be close.
disaster308@reddit
Where's the new location going to be?
satchel65@reddit
Preston and Campbell. Southeast corner.
EconomistUnusual8264@reddit (OP)
I’ve been wanting to try this place since moving here!!! Let me know any other food recommendations from this spot if you have.
j_husk@reddit
Their birria tacos are good, but not what I tend to get. My go-to is the Phodilla - a quesadilla with pho-ish filling and flavors. Sounds weird, I know, but trust me.
Everything is good there though. The Vietnamese/Mexican fusion stuff is unique, the loaded fries are great, good wings, bao buns... Best bet is to share one of their platters with a combination of stuff. Pretty good value too.
Parking is a nightmare but they're about to move to a better location.
EconomistUnusual8264@reddit (OP)
You’re awesome!! I love recommendations! I’ll definitely try when I go there.

I second this. It always blows my mind when it’s not one of the top comments in these threads bc I’ve been going there for years, ordered most of the food on their menu, and it has never missed. Including their birria. Their birria is bomb.
Oh and their prices are super reasonable. Which is always a plus

new location opened in Plano!
j_husk@reddit
Good to know - thanks!
wjconrad@reddit
The Preston and Alpha location also started doing breakfast tacos!!! Eggs + protein (sausage, chorizo, barbacoa, or just beans) + optional upcharges to add cheese or refried beans. 7AM to 11AM, last I checked couldn't be ordered online yet, wasn't in their POS system. $2.95 each with small upcharges for cheese or beans, decent sized, DELICIOUS.
Only downside is parking sucks there, tiny lot.
sudosudash@reddit

Birria is the taco shop version of a hotdog. Bunch of broiled beef bits with lots of seasoning to hide the poor quality meat. Make Tacos Great Again. Bring back asada, carnitas, chicken

Sticky_Gravity@reddit
Yes, it’s wild.

I was born and raised in dtx, but I moved to California for four years and now I’m back in Tx. You might as well move back to CA. Once you try tacos in CA there’s no comparison. I used to defend Mexican food here but I get it now. Also don’t listen to chilangos recommendations they tax and are so skimpy on carne 💔. I personally don’t like spending my money on Mexican food here.

That’s okay…this is my 10th state I’ve lived in. I’m a career nomad. I lived in a bubble in Orange County which is nothing like what you see or hear on the news. But I must say the food was top tier there.
Delicious_Hand527@reddit
I always hear this but I'm in Orange County right now and all my relatives go to the big places which are all lousy Tex-mex. We go to one mex-mex place called Hole Mole which is good. Lots of other food types is OC are just terrible - the costs have gotten out of control and the quality is low, and everything closes way too early. I'm in Huntington Beach area/maybe the whole in the wall side is better. And it's mostly like north Texas suburbs IMO.
EconomistUnusual8264@reddit (OP)
Noooo…Huntington beach is the bland area lol. Have to go to Irvine, Santa Ana, & garden grove. That’s where all the flavor is! There’s a spot called navarros in Santa Ana and it’s phenomenal! That’s where I fell in love with Mexican food!

There’s actually a lot of great Mexican food in DFW. But what’s popular in DFW is food that photos well and is trendy.
Someone mentioned maskaras and they are pretty good and honestly have the only torta ajogada. There’s also Del Sur Tacos off of Jefferson ave.
Someone mentioned Birrieria Aguinaga, and while they have great birria, the quesabirria tacos are likely not what you are looking for. It’s just not their focus. They served birria for a long time and later added quesabirria tacos to the menu around 2020 because of popular demand.
I don’t know much about options in north Dallas, but oak cliff, pleasant grove, and a few other areas scattered around are the best areas to look. Bishop arts district is only a few streets over from the part of town with some of the most rich Latino culture in DFW. I love driving down Jefferson blvd, as well as Davis Street when searching for good Mexican food.
North Grand Prairie surprisingly also has really good pockets along belt line and pioneer and unsurprisingly that’s all spillover from the stuff around Jefferson blvd.
Fort Worth has my personal favorite option for what you are looking for and it’s called Tres Betos. It used to be a super sketchy looking spot bars on the windows and all and now they have a large nice restaurant with DJs and a nice bar. Idk if they still serve the Beto tray as I haven’t seen anyone order it at the new location but it was beautiful.
Hope this helps you find some better options!

In South Dallas, but definitely a good rec.
mariotx10@reddit
Oak Cliff, not south dallas.
slimtuxedo@reddit
Oak Cliff is in south Dallas.
MSHinerb@reddit
It’s south of Dallas, but not what people consider South Dallas.
slimtuxedo@reddit
No, it’s actually in the city of Dallas in the southern part of Dallas. Thanks for playing.
MSHinerb@reddit
You’re absolutely correct geographically. It’s south of Dallas. But it’s not south Dallas. It’s okay that you’re wrong.
slimtuxedo@reddit
I have lived in oak cliff for a very long time and I know what South Dallas is. The OP asked for locations in North Dallas. Maskaras is located in the southern part of Dallas. You are basically the equivalent of a grammar nazi and probably ruin the vibe of every party you go to. Move along.
MSHinerb@reddit
Pot meet kettle big man. That makes us neighbors.
casiepierce@reddit
Please stop.
casiepierce@reddit
No it's not.
ObjectPlayful8821@reddit
Bricks for brains. South Dallas and Oak Cliff are separate neighborhoods and instead of understanding a basic concept, they want to argue and stay wrong. You have more patience than I do. Lake Highlands and Pleasant Grove must be the same too 🙄
slimtuxedo@reddit
OP asked for “North Dallas” so I guess we can only suggest restaurants in the neighborhood between 635>75>NW Hwy>DNT, which good f*in luck. I don’t think there is a single taqueria that exists in those boundaries, so I guess we should close the thread.
EconomistUnusual8264@reddit (OP)
I’ll definitely try it out! Thanks for the suggestion
BrokenCot@reddit
Nah man, honestly, I came back to comment again, because that place is not worth its salt. Any place that does not sell Aguas Frescas and yet prides itself in Mexican culture such as luchador masks– bologna. Save your money.
dtxdestroyer@reddit
Whack comment. Walk across the street and bring your own. Food speaks for itself
BrokenCot@reddit
True that! I will bring my own beverage to the established Mexican Grill. The food speaks, and it says “I’m mid as fuckkkkk.” Place is a gimmick.

Hahaha 😆

Darkvoider_96@reddit
Taco City off of I-30 and Hardwick. Their birria is pretty fucking great. Their salsa verde is just the right amount of flavor and heat.
username_user13@reddit
I’ll defer to others here for Birria tacos specifically, but I will say I like the Birria ramen from Rayo’s Taqueria. My .02 on really good solid Tex-Mex (not that you asked) is at La Hacienda or La Hacienda Ranch (same family, diff locations). It’s not cheap Tex-Mex, but as a South Texan living in Dallas for 8 years now, it’s got good roots in what I’m used to back home. Also, people get confused/don’t clarify enough—Tex-Mex is different than Mexican.
Obvious-Plantain-564@reddit
Omg, are you me? this is the only right answer.
Rayos is the best Mexican food in Dallas. Best queso birrias also. Always consistent and delicious. Family run by the sweetest ppl.
And Mariano’s- best. Tex mex hands down. Emily’s queso and any of their margaritas.
🤤
jmccw@reddit
🎯 Rayo's reigns supreme for me too. Also, DON'T SLEEP ON THEIR MIGAS! Best $10 meal in town. ✌️
Obvious-Plantain-564@reddit
Their chilaquiles are my breakfast to go and sorry I cannot/will not change that. I ask for them to be extra spicy. 🤣🤤 no one does chilaquiles like them. They’re more of a chile árbol rub/sauce… not liquidy tomato/tomatillo. Ugh. Amazing.
username_user13@reddit
😂 glad to know someone else shares my opinion! Is your guilty pleasure Tex-Mex also Chuy’s? Because then we’d REALLY be twins. I stand firmly that Chuy’s is the most consistent chain Tex-Mex (with some twists) that I enjoy. Gimme that jalapeño ranch anytime of day.
EconomistUnusual8264@reddit (OP)
I’ll check it out!!! I don’t mind Tex-Mex. As long as it’s good! I appreciate the recommendation!!!

Tacos La Banqueta has been the only spot I’ve tried so far that has been ok.
I miss those “hole in the wall” spots where the place looks trashed but the food being bomb AF.
General-Carob-6087@reddit
Honestly, my favorite taco spots are the little hole in the wall taquerias inside gas stations. Next time you’re driving around at lunch time and see a bunch of work trucks in the parking lot with guys in safety vests or work clothes going into a gas station go in that gas station. Likely damn good tacos to be found.

absolutely, those are usually the best spots!
Just haven’t found one out here that I can say “damn that’s bomb AF”. Not yet anyways.

Denton has La Fondita and Ambro’s. Bit out of the way but La Fondita has a Birria pizza.
dtxdestroyer@reddit
No shame in some trial and error. Great places in different areas of DFW.
El Tizoncito - flautas, tinga tostadas Cuates - tacos Margaritas - barbacoa Seafood Shack - ceviche El Paisa - breakfast tacos E Bar - brisket Ojedas - ground beef or enchiladas Pepe’s and Mitos - fajitas Taco Joint - jalepeno ranch Taco stand - Cali Cris and John - Vietmex Fridas Tacolandia - street

I’ll up vote you because I agree. This is my 10th state I’ve lived and I like to think of myself as a very experienced foodie at this point. I’ve even lived abroad for a few years and I just want good food! Not knocking anyone’s state or city. This is a genuine question!
E-POLICE@reddit
I lived in Mexico for a couple years and it’s tough to find actual good Mexican food in Dallas. I’ve tried almost all the suggestions and a couple have come close but I’ve yet to find somewhere that has tacos like in Monterrey.
RawrRawr83@reddit
I’ve lived in both cities and Mexico City. LA has much better authentic Mexican and easy to find taco trucks and stands pretty much everywhere. People in this thread are just in their feelings
universal-mustard@reddit
I love our Tex Mex style and I’m sure Cali has its own style but please don’t think vidorra in rockwall is what we consider to be good Tex Mex. Go try Gonzalez in oak cliff or e bar for good Tex Mex. If you like tacos La banqueta try tacos estilo chilango which imo is better. Go to the Hispanic areas and try any whole in the wall where not a word of English is spoken and it will blow most places out of the water. But saying Tex mex sucks because vdorra does is like me going to California and saying their sea food sucks because I went to red lobster and it wasn’t very good.
EconomistUnusual8264@reddit (OP)
I’m not saying it sucks and tbh California sea food does suck imo hahaha I’m a foodie not a person that just says everything is good. If you undercook or overcook and don’t season your food “it’s a no for me” I’m just trying to find a great spot!
universal-mustard@reddit
Check out some of that. I’ve lived here my whole life and those are spots are what I like. Manny’s is great too and there’s a few of those but it depends on what you order. I’m an enchilada guy at Tex Mex spots so I focus on that. There’s some other posts on here for recommendations too.
EconomistUnusual8264@reddit (OP)
I appreciate the recommendations!! I will definitely keep you updated when I try these spots out!!

Taqueria Los Angeles that’s located in Plano, and Tacos La Banqueta puro DF that’s around old East Dallas are my top 2.

La Salsa Verde Taquería

Not for Birria, and not street tacos, but go check out Resident Taqueria for some great “fancy” tacos. They’ve got some good ones.
EconomistUnusual8264@reddit (OP)
Thanks for the recommendation!!! Sounds like a fun spot!
ILikeToParty86@reddit
Where are you? That spot looks dumb.
But anyways north dallas aint gonna satisfy your thirst, you’re gonna have to travel a bit
I had birria “pizza” in pleasant grove and its basically a quesadilla but it was so fucking good
Just saying North Dallas has a lot of good food but not what ur searching for. Oak cliff, pleasant grove, west dallas, east dallas but like far east dallas. Ive had better tacos from gas stations with taco spots inside than straight up taco places here, except for trompo (rip)

Star Bibb Gourmand Recommend Recognized
Texas_Mike_CowboyFan@reddit
Says here there are 27.

TheRon_Says@reddit
Michelin recognized is not the same a getting a Michelin star. It say's that in the opening paragraph of your link.
"The city mostly earned the honor of recognition, which means being listed in the influential travel guide, with a handful of Bib Gourmands, one Exceptional Cocktail Program award, and a single Michelin star recipient"
Texas_Mike_CowboyFan@reddit
As if I read the link....c'mon. This is Reddit. Or Didn'tReddit.
