Trump’s justice department issues directive to strip naturalized Americans of citizenship for criminal offenses

I may be dumb...but what happens to all the property and businesses that the targeted people own?
He's getting rid of you to take all your shit isn't he?
This is where we are at.
reila_go@reddit (OP)
I’d read up on what happened to the property of Japanese-Americans after they were forced into internment camps.
Fitl4L@reddit
Tldr: Sold for pennies on the dollar to white American farmers/business owners/families.
Medium-Drive-959@reddit
So does that mean I can attempt political asylum like anywhere else cuz anywhere else seems better than here partner
BayouGal@reddit
Other countries don’t really want Americans.
Medium-Drive-959@reddit
That's the loophole though you're no longer American lol your a refugee right of anywhere and everywhere so idk im south African might be the right answer or I'll have to brush up on my English accent m8
BayouGal@reddit
LOL I'm brushing up college French whilst still learning Spanish & Ukranian! I do love a South African accent :)
sole_food_kitchen@reddit
You don’t need asylum you could just move to Mexico
Medium-Drive-959@reddit
Eh Mexico is pretty rough
sole_food_kitchen@reddit
Or move anywhere? You don’t need asylum to leave your country

Next they’re going to start charging naturalized citizens with arbitrary crimes. Oops! We get to deport you now. They’re demons
Nouseriously@reddit
Yep, they'll make it so no conviction is necessary, just get charged
OxytocinOD@reddit
They already did. Read the new requirements to denaturalize someone. No conviction is necessary.
DoNotIgnoreMustafa@reddit
Be sure to anonymously report any trump supporters as breaking the law so you help them eat themselves from the inside :)
catsandferns@reddit
“Start” charging with arbitrary crimes?
Kasuyan@reddit
and just citizens in general

And those who voted for kamala in particular.
'Sir you have a speeding ticket , and voted for kamala. We have to send you to south sudan'.
Desperate_Cheetah249@reddit
"they"? "they" do it on behalf of "all", including "you" (assuming you are a citizen)
Bulky-Owl8568@reddit
He is talking about deporting people from the continent of Africa.
hruebsj3i6nunwp29@reddit
So, actually reading the article it sounds like they're going after people who lied or falsified docs in the Naturalization process.
Alternative_Chart121@reddit
The article is incorrect though, the fine print states that they can denaturalize
"10. Any other cases referred to the Civil Division that the Division determines to be sufficiently important to pursue."
BUT WAIT THERE'S MORE: T:hese categories are intended to guide the Civil Division in prioritizing which cases to pursue; however, these categories do not limit the Civil Division from pursuing any particular case, nor are they listed in a particular order of importance. Further, the Civil Division retains the discretion to pursue cases outside of these categories as it determines appropriate. The assignment of denaturalization cases may be made across sections or units based on experience, subject-matter expertise, and the overall needs of the Civil Division.
Thoth-long-bill@reddit
No. Read beyond this article
After_Competition_87@reddit
Why would you read the article! You're supposed to freak out over the headline!
MostlyHereForKeKs@reddit
they asked a reasonable question, and were given answers with links. both those things contributed to the discussion. your comment did not.

People like this tool are the worst because every time this admin does something with the most obvious bad intentions they fall over themselves desperate to sane wash it.

And given that we already imprison a higher percentage of our population than any other developed nation…..
Unique-Sock3366@reddit
This is one reason private equity prisons are booming and ICE is up for a huge budget increase.
altoidsjedi@reddit
Don't forget that these are the same people who went after Mahmoud Khalil, revoked his permanent residency green card, and locked him up for months because he allegedly a threat to U.S. foreign policy — justified by an extremely vague clause in the INA from the 1950's... which itself was put into law by Mcarthy-era anti-semites who wanted to restrict Eastern European Jewish immigration under the guise of "concerns about communist infiltration.
In short — after everything we've seen, from Jan 6th "decertification" to everything within the last six months under Trump II, there's no reason to suspect they will use this "denaturalization" bullshit with anything less than creatively malicious intent.
Content_Source_878@reddit
Well considering they are saying being next to someone with gang affiliation means you are in a gang and enough to deport I’m not sure Trump’s justice department will take any care in how offenses are found.
Terrorist sympathy cause you had attended a funeral back home for a possible Hamas member means you are Hamas
qlippothvi@reddit
Or have the wrong tattoo…
crusoe@reddit
So this is why Musk was sweating and trying to make up.
Effective-Anybody395@reddit
There multiple avenues for denaturalization. Here’s the actual US DOJ memo and number 10 is pretty vague and ambiguous. https://www.justice.gov/civil/media/1404046/dl?inline
Key_Secretary_3948@reddit
And if that flies. It will be expanded. Also, they can claim anyone lied on the papers. Without requiring legal support, there will be noone to refute.
a2aurelio@reddit
That's not a hard thing to allege. The alteraron could be simmering hard to disprove. The potential for use of this as harassment is high.
Gristlekitty@reddit
That’s the excuse to be able to do it soon it’ll be all those opposed.
Altitudeviation@reddit
For now, yes.
sexarseshortage@reddit
Some countries require people to renounce their citizenship to become citizens of a different country. What do those people do in this case? They will be shipped to countries where they can be locked up indefinitely and have no consular assistance.
Another scenario. A parent is a naturalized citizen, they have kids born in the US. If they commit a crime, they can have their citizenship stripped and potentially their kids can too if the birthright citizenship is gone. This is dangerous territory.
There will be a complete brain drain out of the states. I work in tech and have seen it happening already. Top engineers won't relocate the US and those that are here are getting out. Even Americans.
AnomalyNexus@reddit
A lot of countries have legislation that explicitly prohibits this. Basically "yes you can strip citizenship but only if it doesn't cause statelessness". Don't know if the US does. Guessing no.
There are also intl treaties on this, but less than half the world signed, USA not being one of them.
Nkechinyerembi@reddit
as a stateless person living in the US, trust me, the US has no means at all of handling statelessness. Numerous times it has come up that I may be moved to detention and deported, and made it quite far just to hit the wall of "nowhere to deport me to". There's also no path to citizenship for me, though... so yeah.
AnomalyNexus@reddit
You’re officially the first real person I’ve ever encountered that is stateless.
Mind sharing how that came about?
Nkechinyerembi@reddit
i can share what i know, but its all a bit of a mystery to me as well.
I know i was born in one of the USSR's territories in 1990-91, and I know that I was brought to the US before I was a year old. Somehow, I ended up in an orphanage or children's home, and my parents, whoever they were, are not in the picture. I went in and out of the foster system my whole life with all sorts of various document issues, and even spent some time in Internment. Basically, I am "legal" via DACA, but DACA keeps going on the chopping block, and every time it does, it essentially resets my life, as I immediately lose employment and am technically illegal, even if I can't leave.
AnomalyNexus@reddit
Wild - thanks for sharing.
Would have thought that the system would have a better way of absorbing very young orphans.
Nkechinyerembi@reddit
you would think wouldn't you? The biggest issue seems to just be that my birth country just doesn't exist, and I don't really know what its modern counterpart even is.
Few-Cycle-1187@reddit
Well that's likely why they wanted to establish the ability to deport to third party countries before undertaking this on a mass level. They can just send you wherever even if you lack the legal ability to work or live there.
kiefoween@reddit
This is already is occuring, a man was set to be deported to Guatemala but he was relieved when he was actually sent to Jamaica because at least they speak english.

They will redefine “criminal offenses” soon. My guess is voting blue will be considered criminal.
RocketSocket765@reddit
They couldn't find enough criminals, so they'll make people "criminals."

Exactly
Unique-Sock3366@reddit
Yes, indeed.
Half of the political cartoons saved in my phone are soon to be classified as felonies, no doubt.
Puzzleheaded_Gene909@reddit
How many criminals are in this admin?
All_Talk_Ai@reddit
Every politician today is a criminal. This admin is just very blatant about it.
You think AOC cares about you while she’s dancing in parades ? Getting her hair and nails and make up done for free. Advertising her social channels.
It’s all a grift. They’re all complicit.

You know you’re actually supposed to vote for candidates who can win elections right ?
Just an fyi. It’s the people in the middle you need to win over to win the election. Keep alienating them. That shit worked out so well last November didn’t it?
XxHazard001xX@reddit
America is great already, right Jim Bob? Democrats are dumb and corrupt, but Trump and his admin as total saints, no corruption at all, total man of God right? Jesus would be proud? My favorite Trump bible passage was about how we should love our neighbors while we strip them of citizenship and send them to the camps.
All_Talk_Ai@reddit
Yeah they’re just as nuts as you are
XxHazard001xX@reddit
Awwww little Jim Bob has nothing but insults… Grow some balls and say you voted for Trump because you dislike people who are different than yourself.
Thoth-long-bill@reddit
All of them
NoIndividual5501@reddit
Wait until they try to convince Americans it's cheaper to just kill them. The camps are coming...
Thoth-long-bill@reddit
45 trillion for new ice detention camps approved today by senate. Alligator Auschwitz tent prison set up in 1.5 weeks. Zero climate control. Mosquitos will give them diseases. Maybe ICE will all get Zika.
NoIndividual5501@reddit
Just think of all the good you could do with that money, nobody would be homeless or hungry. This world disgusts me, glad I never had kids...
BayouGal@reddit
Have you seen the one they’re already building in Florida. They’re going to house the inmates in tents. No AC, loads of mosquitoes, Burmese pythons, etc. Honestly, the alligators are the least concerning part.
BigODetroit@reddit
You have to wonder about the person who applies to work there in those conditions.
Awkward_Actuator_970@reddit
The people who want to work in those conditions are there to violently abuse and SA the inmates. They cannot do that anywhere else in the world. They WANT to be in those miserable conditions to gain access to non consensual sex and other abuses.
NoIndividual5501@reddit
Scary. There's quite a few Bush had built as well, they've been planning this shit for a while...
BayouGal@reddit
Since the 50s. See John Birch Society for reference.
QuickMain@reddit
Can they actually do this?
XxHazard001xX@reddit
Time to get armed. Every naturalized citizen needs to go to a gunstore, buy a rifle, and a pistol for everyone in their family. Load up on ammo and wait for the gestapo to come knocking.
iridescent-shimmer@reddit
We'll get the birthright citizenship ruling soon (the case itself was not decided yet. The decision everyone reported on last week was about injunctions by lower courts.) If SCOTUS actually sided with the Trump admin, then the constitution is dead in the water.
HighGrounderDarth@reddit
Sounds like the tree of liberty is about to need some watering.
iridescent-shimmer@reddit
I have no idea what happens at that point tbh. I truly can't imagine SCOTUS ruling against birthright citizenship unless they want to dismantle democracy and end their own power.
Thoth-long-bill@reddit
The goal is to transfer power to oligarchs running their own territory. Trump is a pawn. Just read the stuff on yarvin.
qlippothvi@reddit
Oops, a SCOTUS justice ruled against me, time to revoke their citizenship…
iridescent-shimmer@reddit
He doesn't even need to do that based on the power they already gave him. He's immune apparently, so he could easily just order executions. But, flat out ignoring an amendment...a future SCOTUS could just decide the second amendment isn't valid either then. It should worry everyone, including the asshat respondents to my comment (not you lol.)
alkbch@reddit
SCOTUS has already upheld severe restrictions for the second amendment. By that logic they could also upheld restrictions to birthright citizenship.
OrangeCreamPushPop@reddit
They do actually. That’s the plan.
valiumblue@reddit
What’s the point of watering a tree that’s already been chopped down?
n0k0@reddit
Ya. It's time, shit's looking wilted and dying.
fr0zen_garlic@reddit
Stop fear mongering.
Spunknikk@reddit
How is it fear mongering when it's literally happening? Lol
runawayjimlfc@reddit
Seriously these people are embarrassments. The same people who couldn’t be intellectually honest about the abortion ruling and kept saying “he took away women’s rights”.
He didn’t. He allowed the states to vote and manage it themselves. Irrespective of how you feel about the issue- I happen to be very pro choice and not religious - this is a fact it s not an opinion and yet they all went out saying dictator taking women’s reproductive organs. They’ve lost all credibility with sensible people. The only ones listening are the other insane people who have zero frame of reference and have never experienced a real dictatorship or authoritarian government
sexarseshortage@reddit
No one said that.
So you're pro choice but are ok with the government blocking women's access to healthcare? Why would you not what that right protected at the federal level?

It's a literal constitutional amendment. If the Supreme Court ignores a blatant piece of the constitution then the whole document isn't guaranteed. That's just basic facts, not fearmongering at all. I'm not even entertaining this conversation anymore based on the continued comments by more morons.
Dzjeek@reddit
I don't think this is fearmongering. It is happening. What else is he going to do with it? Not use it. Or just using it for the "criminals"?
We've seen how that worked out.

They did it in the McCarthy era and , surprisingly, under Obama. Here’s where I read about that: https://www.npr.org/2025/06/30/nx-s1-5445398/denaturalization-trump-immigration-enforcement

So if you were born here then what country would you be deported to? Do we at least get a choice because I think a lot of people would actually like to leave.
Hellstorm901@reddit
Does this apply to Barron Trump too, he’s not even an American under Trumps new definition of citizenship
RelationRealistic@reddit
And you ask a nasty question like that? Don't ever say what you said. That's a nasty question. To me, that's the nastiest question.
Hellstorm901@reddit
When was Barron Trump born?
When did Melania Trump get her citizenship?
RelationRealistic@reddit
You're fake news and not a nice guy.
Hellstorm901@reddit
You are welcome to disprove me, just tell me what date Melania became a citizen and what date Barron Trump was born
Shouldn’t be too hard seeing as you say I’m wrong and have proof of it
RelationRealistic@reddit
You do realize both my replies are quotes from Barron's azzhole father, right?
Ebscriptwalker@reddit
To anyone wanting to justify this the slippery slope fallacy only exists as a fallacy when there is no proof of people oiling the incline. The fallacy ceases when proof of attempts to escalate are heavily present. It started with illegalmigrant criminals(allegedly), then it turned into , just illegal migrants, now it is legal migrants criminals(alleged), the next step is all migrants. Do you really think it will stop there.
LassenDiscard@reddit
Nope, he's already talking about deporting natural-born citizens.
Average_Locksmith@reddit
That’s called exile.
haveyouseenthething@reddit
He just said on live tv he even wants to deport people born in the US. So actual citizens. The slope is a cliff.
alkbch@reddit
If you deport all migrants, there won’t be many people left in the US.
M0therN4ture@reddit
Thats the point of Republicans. They want to deport democrats to gain key swing states. Then hold sham elections and pretend everything is ok.
The Russian way.
No-Permission4489@reddit
Yes, they can go back generations and claim your great grandfather got citizenship through scam, and thus the citizenship of all following generations should be revoked because birthright citizenship isn’t a thing.

Just wait until they change the definitions of what equals certain crimes.
Their game is to chip away at things, make a big scene somewhere else so you're distracted, they chip away a little more, make a big scene somewhere else to distract you, then chip away a little more.
Rinse, repeat.
Husskvrna@reddit
How is there not protests in every city and how is there no push back by Any republicans on this? They see where it’s going and I refuse to believe they are ok with it.
Unique-Sock3366@reddit
And, of course, “criminal offenses” will be whatever Trump and his corrupt administration think they are.
I’m a foreign born daughter of two US citizens. I was born in what was then West Germany when my father was serving in the United States Army.
I have absolutely no illusions about how safe my citizenship is. I’m an outspoken feminist, humanist, and socialist democrat. I’m exactly the kind of trouble making dissenter that this fascist regime would love to strip of my citizenship and deport.
Absolutely none of us is safe.
irishfeet78@reddit
My mother is the same, but one parent was a German citizen at her birth. Mom is terrified of getting deported.
reality72@reddit
FYI if your mom was born to a German citizen then she is eligible for German citizenship. What are they going to do, deport her to Germany with a higher standard of living than the US? Oh no!
irishfeet78@reddit
Right? Except she left 75 years ago, most of her family is dead (her remaining cousin just passed last month) and she has zero memory of speaking German. Though, dementia is starting to set in so perhaps the language will come back.
reality72@reddit
I don’t think there’s a language requirement for German citizenship but I could be wrong, she’d have to talk to the German consulate.
irishfeet78@reddit
Funny you mention that - I’ve actually started the research phase of getting my own German passport!
alkbch@reddit
This doesn’t impact you as you’re not a naturalized citizen.
Funkywurm@reddit
What makes you think Trump will stop here? He’s clearly on an authoritarian path, this was just a stop along the way
Unique-Sock3366@reddit
I don’t believe that they will stop with any specific group.

I’m in the same shoes, but not a Brit. The question is how far they will go. They’ve proposed ten reasons to justify denaturalizing citizens. The tenth on the list is up for interpretation, which could allow them to deport anyone when they see fit.
Phreenom@reddit
So this will be like all the made up crimes without any evidence they used to justify rounding other immigrants up. Trust us, they will say, this guy is a real bad guy, he eats kittens while molesting children.

Ricky_Ventura@reddit
They did. She lied on her immigration paperwork claiming a > 150 IQ.
bilkel@reddit
That massive of change, doesn't Congress have to pass a law?
Za_Lords_Guard@reddit
It's not new. McCarthy (version 1.0) did a lot of this for people he got to confess of communism. Obama spun up "Operation Janus" to review fingerprint info to look for fraud and criminality in naturalized citizens, but that resulted in like 48 denaturalization in 8 years. Biden was higher in four at 64... In both cases it was something that was reviewed and done only when there was seriously valid.
Technically that is what this is except we have an admin full of complete authoritarian sociopaths who are doing their level best to use the letter of the law to defeat the spirit of the law. They are also pursuing it as a civil and not criminal matter. That lowers the threshold of proof and makes it easier to deport without due process. Basically: "Your paperwork had an error so off to the Sudan you go."
I think it's a problem the way it works under presidents who I trust. Under this turd I am terrified.

ngl I'm glad I'm watching this all from afar & my condolences to those that aren't.

And then they will just make up what an offense is and use it as an excuse to strip legit8mate naturalized citizens of citizenship based on not sucking enough tiny orange dick per day
bearinghewood@reddit
It's whackamole time yet again. They are stripping citizenship from people that lied about having criminal convictions in their home country before moving to the United States. You can't immigrate to the us if you have a felony conviction.
spinalking@reddit
He can start with himself ffs
8amteetime@reddit
Naturalized citizens are actual citizens of the United States. They have all the rights of a citizen born in the country.
This is illegal. The only way to denaturalize a citizen is if they lied about something on their application or committed a crime prior to or during the process of becoming an American citizen.
They have all the legal rights of citizenship.

normcash25@reddit
IANAL but I don’t think that most crimes are sufficient legal reasons to remove citizenship.
Sweaty-Feedback-1482@reddit
What a coincidence! Many of Trump's former lawyers can also say they're now IANAL! Small fucking world huh?
