Useless fact coming up - but this was an actual historical insult.
To say someone smelled of elderberries was to say they were a drunk. Cos elderberry wine has always been a thing and made in abundance once upon a time.
Every time Iām near elderberry gummy vitamins and another patron or clerk in a store, I hold the vitamins and say to the person āmy father smelled of these,ā and every time Iāve gotten blank stares/nobodyās gotten it once.
The first time, I said it to someone I knew and who I thought would get it; ever since, itās been like a mission (ādammit, Iām going to keep doing this until someone gets it!ā)
I am the guy in like 75% of the situations in those commercialsā¦or Iāve got a weird sense of humor - e.g. I recently, impulsively, grabbed one of those Gizmo/Gremlins dolls at Target and put it with the bottled water along with a flashlight, then left; I also saw a toy cop car near the register and coincidentally noticed two actual cop cars parked right outside as I was checking out at the dollar store, so I bought the toy car and placed it in the empty space next to the cars, then drove off (I donāt film/take pics of it or anythingā¦it basically just gives me like 5 secs of amusement)
Honestly, if thereās one place where it wouldnāt count, itās this sub. If Iām in a real dark place bc no on3 gets my references, I know I can post an obscure gif of an extra in here, and a handful of people will say āSurf Ninjas!ā

Shit I loved that movie as a kid. I saw it in the French dubbed version and I think I can recite pretty much the entire movie. I watched the VHS so often, the quality visibly deteriorated.
This movie caused me to curse as a child when they beat him with baseball bats although I didnāt get in much trouble for it because I was displaying angered empathy.
Fun fact, Stephanie's house from the first movie is now an air BNB in Astoria, Oregon. I've stayed there while passing through. Besides having a great view and being a nice place, the owner has a bunch of memorabilia in the house and a DVD copy of the movie. The owner leaves a cool "short circuit house" poster and some stickers for guests to take home.
You know, I kinda love this about the movie. I know itās not okay in a modern sense, but Fisher Stevens killed it in that role and really tried his fucking best not to make it a ridiculous stereotype for laughs. Including delivering one of the best pointed lines about the immigrant experience for triple irony during the movie:
Yeah, the longer story Iāve read is that he was hired for the role, and then they (writers/director/producers) changed the character to be Indian. Arguably, he should have backed out at that point, but I can understand his view of being a relatively unknown actor not wanting to pass up a great role.
At very least he did his damn best to not make the character a joke stereotype. His dedication to the role is why so many of us didnāt even know he wasnāt Indian until we were much older.
I feel bad for him. I doubt there was anyone involved at the time who said let's get an Indian actor, or this seems weird and wrong. In 1986, people still thought Mickey Rooney as Mr. Yunioshi in The Graduate was hilarious
I remember watching the two Short Circuit movies and loving Fisher Stevens in them. Then in the mid 1990s he starred in Early Edition alongside Kyle Chandler, and was sort of shocked to hear him in a regular Midwestern accent.
Short Circuit was pretty egregious but I think the Apu controversy was overblown by the documentarian trying to make a name for himself.
It is objectionable that white actors get cast for parts that are written as minorities, I wouldnāt contest that, but Apu as he is written is a more up standing character than a lot of the other people in Springfield.
And, of course, raiding a sorority, stealing their panties, planting cameras to take nude photos for their own enjoyment and then profiting by selling those photos later.
I recently saw the Netflix series You. I went into it literally knowing nothing about it. I think I had just heard people mention it, so since I had nothing else to watch I gave it a shot.
Since I didn't even know the genre of it I actually thought it was going to be some romantic comedy type thing. It actually took me a long time to realise "wow, the main character is a fucking psychopath" because a lot of his behaviour was basically what the main character in 80s and 90s romcoms did. This was the guy that was supposed to have a happy ending. Even when he was literally killing people I somehow kept rooting for him because, at least initially, it's kind of like a "wacky" situation.
I don't consider this a spoiler because this is something that happens in episode one, but the fact that it took me several seasons to truly despise him despite the absolutely depraved, cruel, psychotic shit he did in episode 1 really made me examine this stuff and how I process it. Like, I'm really watching this guy break into a woman's home, go through her shit, take her underwear, then smash her boyfriend's head and kidnap him, yet my inner monologue is going "oh man I hope she doesn't find out about this or she may not want to date him". Bro, what?!
Oh? What you read had polled ALL Indians worldwide? Impressive.
Also, Indians are not the only South Asians nor the only brown folks who might object.
Also, itās immediately comparable to black race, which Black folks absolutely do find offensive and maybe tells us to just stop doing that kind of thing altogether.
ALSO, there are many, many Indian actors, you donāt think theyād be more effective in portraying an Indian character?
Yep. This and Short Round were pretty uncontroversial at the time. I'm sure some people took exception to them, but it wasn't the prevailing sentiment.
I watched it for the first time in, I don't know, 30 years the other night. When he appeared I thought "oh yeah, there's that Indian character! ..... oh wait. Hold on. What am I WATCHING?!"
It was one of the weirdest film watching experiences I've had in a long time. Watching something I'd seen loads of times before, in a totally different light.
The 2nd one where he gets all beat up and Michael McKean finds him leaking battery acid in the street on the brink of death... legitimately one of the hardest I cried at a movie as a kid.
But then we get the "I Need a Hero" action montage, which is extremely cheesy in hindsight but pretty killer at the time.
It's funny how everyone misquotes this line (multiple times in this comment section even) when he actually only names himself "Johnny" at the very end of the film. Prior to that he was "Number Five", and only ever said "Number Five is alive!"
i also forgot Ally Sheedy was even in the movie. all i've got is "Number Five is Alive" and a bolt of lightning, and i might even be remembering that from Back to the Future.
This movie is actually super impressive doing this all in real life instead of just using computers to animate. Obviously they had no choice back then.
Watched this movie at the end of the year with my debate students a few years ago. Several of them were Indian-Americans and they had a solid fucking laugh at the performance of the white actor playing the Indian engineer.
I mean yes it was brown face and he was playing the stereotype, they could have gotten an actual Indian actor. But I never really thought his roll was really that offensive, or intended to be. Sure in a meta sense him being a white actor could be offensive, but in the context of the character in the movie I haven't met anyone it offended. However I'd like to know if anyone was.
The guy was recently on the news being interviewed during the L.A. fires, begging for people to leave their keys in their cars and not abandon them so people could move em if need be, so as to let others evacuate and not be blockaded and burned alive.\
Cars gonna be a char anyway.

Guys solid.
I like to think that there's an alternate universe where he got the lead role in Philadelphia instead of Tom Hanks and broke out of his goofball rom-com mold to become a serious dramatic actor. Nothing against Tom, but him and Steve were pretty interchangeable throughout most of the '80s.
I remember running away from my mom at like 5 when she was trying to get me to change clothes if we were going out screaming "No disassemble nooooo disassemble!"
I wept in the theater at this movie. I was maybe five years old. I was too little to understand that the sad part was going to lead to an eventual happy end, so I thought my new robot friend was gone. This is possibly one of the most intense media experiences of my life. Ā
Sooo many 80s movies that I can't show my kids because they have the ick of sexual assaults, or jokes about women's bodies, but "Short Circuit" is a rare exception. It really holds up!
I, a millennial born in 1990, grew up watching this movie on VHS because my xennial brother loved it. My mom won free movie theater tickets from a radio station and took him when he was a small child.
Personally, I love the song at the end where they decide to go on a road trip to Montana.
I donāt talk to my brother anymore for a lot of reasons, but thinking about how we quoted the movie to each other growing up makes me tear up.
Man, this takes me back, Johnny Five was the OG Wall-E before Wall-E even existed. That snowblower joke cracked me up, but honestly, this little guy had way more personality than most humans. Never thought Iād feel nostalgic over a robot with googly eyes!
Number 5: [killing] is wrong. Incorrect. Newton Crosby, PhD, not know this?
Crosby: Of course, I know it's wrong to kill, but who told you?
Number 5: ...I told me.
I don't know why, but this exchange always floored me. Even as a kid. Just cuts right into my soul. I think about it whenever I'm around the topic of where atheists get their morals from. Like, yes, obviously you can reason from first principles that it's wrong to kill, without needing to rely on an outside authority to tell you. And just because someone can't walk you through the logic step by step (if they're even aware of it) doesn't make it less real or valid.
Short Circuit was FAR better than Wall-E because Wall-E clearly didn't care Eve isn't interested in him. He takes her incapacitated form on several dates, which if you think about it is really creepy.
Johnny 5 would have just found someone else who was onto him and not pestered Eve.
Glad someone else picks up on this. Johnny 5 was through and through a sweetheart. So was Wall-E, but he was contending with hundreds of years of existential dread prior to meeting Eve, and Eve is just like "haha, girls hate boys these days amirite?".
Loved that movie. That was back in the day of independent video rental stores. Ours was down the street and called something like Video 33. Had Beta and VHS with a closed off section with porn. It was in an old ass store front that was probably a Polish grocery store or something back in the day.
Literally just watched this for the first time since I was a kid while on a flight yesterday. I've always loved scifi and robots so naturally I watched short circuit on broadcast TV in the 90's. It... isnt a great rewatch šš¤·āāļø
Saw this in the theatre with my best friend when I was 7. Power went out two thirds of the way through, due to a thunder storm. So they gave us free passes. Which we used to see Howard the Duck instead š
So I just now realized, 39 years after this movie was released, that it was directed by the same guy that directed Saturday Night Fever, which means the scene where Johnny 5 learns to dance by watching Saturday Night Fever is basically the director's homage to himself, and that strikes me as a hell of a flex.
I love this film. Iāve seen it so many times. My little brother was obsessed and he still is. Has Johnny 5 merch. I unironically love Frankās car, and I know Stephanieās house must have smelled SO bad. Her outfits were done, though. Loved the slouchy sweaters and floral skirts with boots.
Recently-ish found out the Indian engineer, Ben Jabituya, was played by a white actor (Fisher Stevens). Still blows my mind every time I think of it lol.

I canāt hear the song More Than A Women without hearing it sung by Johnny 5. Cone on, Stephanie! Dance with me!

Literally just watched this for the first time since I was a kid while on a flight yesterday. I've always loved scifi and robots so naturally I watched short circuit on broadcast TV in the 90's. It... isnt a great rewatch šš¤·āāļø

This was good, but Batteries Not Included was my favorite. I watched it so many times.
peetownpasteup@reddit
Saw this in the theatre with my best friend when I was 7. Power went out two thirds of the way through, due to a thunder storm. So they gave us free passes. Which we used to see Howard the Duck instead š
Miserable-Lawyer-233@reddit
I feel like both Short Circuit and Wall-E are my generation.
illinoishokie@reddit
So I just now realized, 39 years after this movie was released, that it was directed by the same guy that directed Saturday Night Fever, which means the scene where Johnny 5 learns to dance by watching Saturday Night Fever is basically the director's homage to himself, and that strikes me as a hell of a flex.

The robot design maybe, but it's a completely different story
BlackestHerring@reddit
Different story for sure. But seriously. Same head and tank treads. There are infinite robot designs one could have picked.
