Got some great food good people don't stay on Samuel Big Town area if ya can't fight though you gotta assault back sometimes there I been shot at and got pistol whipped one time good, before beating those two guys up. kicked one down the stairs but they got me pretty good took one of my cowboy work boots as I kicked ole dude, though never got it back..should've had bullets would've been the way to go I guess........
LaminatedAirplane@reddit
Depends which areas, but the answer is “not really”. 15 years ago the answer would be “definitely yes”, but Oak Cliff is gentrifying and definitely turning yuppie.
Sanityovar8ted@reddit
They really are gentrifying oak kliff Except the Sunnyvale and Ledbetter area or as some would call it BFL=best 4 less...I think like only 2 yt ladies live in the whole area, truck stop hangs out there but he is black on the inside n sounds like a pirate...I honestly think yt people are afraid of that area....o the yt dude that works in the pawnshop that makes 4....and yes I live in that area The trenches of the hood
StephenWins@reddit
It's where everybody use to move to back in the 1920s to get out of the city. It was the other side of the Trinity, Dallas was smaller. It has very nice houses, some are mansions you could say. The biggest and nicest golf club was there (1919). I imagine you know how the story goes, white flight. I just think it's important to know the roots of the neighborhood, it was a really happening place back in the day, I like to think that never changed. I don't think it's ghetto, it's just a historic 'hood' , and it'll get even better. Lots of places were bad in the 90s, it's been over 25 years of recovery and more to come now with lofts and condos and business.
starsfan26@reddit
I always had the impression that the interstate highway system is what really chopped OC off from Dallas and that really enhanced the already existing racial divide. Maybe it was earlier than that. In either case, I grew up here feeling that Dallas had really worked to force poor/brown people south of 30 while the whites moved north. And now there’s a white metro centered in Frisco that goes all the way to Oklahoma while Dallas County remains relatively diverse, even if still divided.
NonlocalA@reddit
Yeah, it's pretty classic redlining, and 100% intentional. It's absolutely tied in with the freeways, too (75, for instance, is drawn the way it is on purpose).
Here's an article that gives a decent overview. It's a few years old, but the facts are still relevant.

Close to downtown Dallas will always be valuable. If it’s poor people now, eventually rich people will come for proximity unless the law protects

Unless you’re from India. Tell your people to come here and open Indian restaurants 😭
Only thing we’re missing imo.
nihouma@reddit
Does Oak Cliff have any good Chinese restaurants? Whenever I search on Google maps I only ever see a place up by Trinity Groves
Sanityovar8ted@reddit
China Wok next 2 the beauty supply right off the intersection of Sunnyvale and Ledbetter is really good. Iono if its authentic Chinese food but the cooks r Chinese n they speak Chinese. And they're portion sizes r really great. I think it might b authentic cuz iono what alot of the menu items r n im not going 2 try sumthin that idk what it is...its located in the trenches of oak kliff Dallas tx n people come from all over Dallas 2 China Wok even people that don't look like they belong in the area. They're nice, its clean n reasonably priced. When u park n get out ur car, if anyone starts walking towards u asking u anything just keep walking, don't make eye contact and basically ignore their existence. Enjoy

Sticky_Gravity@reddit
Born and raised in south oak cliff. It CHANGED a lot. It’s not ghetto as much. You can walk freely out here now. Depending on the block, like Denley and Morrell, it’s still active with “interesting” people. You’ll still see your naked person star glazing in the side walk every now and then.
hondo9999@reddit
Tell us more about the random naked person stargazing on the sidewalk, please.
For science. 🤓
Sticky_Gravity@reddit
I bumped into 3-4 people passed out on the side walk and in the middle of the road. I go to Denley and Morrell a lot cause of the corner store. Other people go to it since it’s the corner store that has the accessories available to help you consume the vice. Syringes, glass roses and copper scrubbing pads.
So being a concerned person, I usually check for breathing and blinking. You DO NOT want to fuck someone’s high up, if you do some don’t take ems friendly cause it fucks up their high.
I may or may not have the pictures of them passed out stargazing at night. One of them was having some type of issue where they got hauled away.
I usually mind my business (best thing to do here) but when someone’s dying you do something about it.
Physical_Opposite445@reddit
I want to give a counter example since everyone feels generally safe in the area.
I lived a block from the main bishop arts area and had a great time, never felt unsafe. I'm also a dude.
My two friends, a married lesbian couple, lived just a 2 minutes further away by car and were constantly harrased and followed by homeless men. They never felt safe walking anywhere even when they were together. Didn't matter the time of day.
One of them was even followed by a dude in a car when she was out walking one block from me and I dropped everything to go pick her up.
The top "just don't be a pussy" comment is very funny until your loved ones experience actually dangerous situations there.
Few-Okra-9092@reddit
Just save the strays if you move there also :(

Ambitious_Ad_9637@reddit
Have these people been to Oak Cliff in the last 10 years?
fmuoasl2017@reddit
I grew up in Oak cliff and my parents are still there. Did I get followed on numerous occasions and asked to get in strangers vehicles? sure. Did that stop me from playing outside with my friends? hell no. Have my neighbors had their houses robbed in the middle of the night while they were there or robbed at night walking their dogs? yes. Will your neighbors be nice to you and keep a lookout if you lost your cat and are really sad about it? totally.
if you have zero common sense you probably wont have the best of experiences. If you’re a relatively vigilant person and be an active member of your neighborhood then you’ll be just fine.
DallasCommune@reddit
Grew up there. Experienced less violence in15 years there as a white dude than I ever did with a night with frat dude-bros in uptown. (If you're not a racist fuck cosplaying to be a progressive for internet points; Oak Cliff is probably one of the better places to be in Dallas safety to price wise)
SpecialMud6084@reddit
Who's making it out to be bad?
springbluebell1@reddit
Not in the least. It’s one of my favorite neighborhoods.
FarNorthDallasMan@reddit
Is oak cliff really a neighborhood or more like an area the size of St. Louis. Because bishop arts and highland hills couldn’t be more different
broniskis45@reddit
Is oak cliff really bigger in size than St Louis?
superdrone@reddit
I doubt it but oak cliff is shockingly large in square footage for something that’s just supposed an “area” in Dallas.
broniskis45@reddit
I grew up here so I'm aware of the history of being annexed when it was it's own town. Still it's wild to me to think that oak cliff is comparable in size to a city that had an NFL team at one point. Wild.
bright1111@reddit
And all five boroughs combined is the same size as the city of Dallas
broniskis45@reddit
🤯
iranoutofspacehere@reddit
Apparently? Google thinks Oak Cliff is 72 square miles to Saint Louis' 67.
I think the difference is that Oak Cliff's area includes a good chunk of very far south Dallas you wouldn't necessarily think of when you refer to Oak Cliff. Conversely, Saint Louis is a large metro area and the city itself is only a small fraction of the total.
noncongruent@reddit
I was surprised to learn that Oak Cliff is everything west of I-35E all the way down to I-20, and on the west side it's bounded by Loop 12 from I-30 down to S. Cockrell Hill Road, which becomes the west boundary all the way down to I-20. Most people think it's just the small bit up near downtown called Bishop Arts, and maybe Kessler.
bright1111@reddit
Oak Cliff includes areas East of 35… anything over to 45 can be called Oak Cliff… for example, pull up South Oak Cliff high school on a map.
noncongruent@reddit
I went with the google maps definition. In the end, we're all Oak Cliff if you think about it.
MarthaGail@reddit
Oak Cliff used to be its own town.
_______woohoo@reddit
depends where in Oak Cliff. Highland Hills is very different from the Kessler neighborhood.
boardcertifiedasian@reddit
Kessler Park is designed by… Kessler, the same guy who designed Highland Parks here and Beverly Hills in LA. The demographic currently is pretty similar to Highland Parks but it leans waaaaay more progressive. Pride flags every few houses, or mansions I must say. It’s also very, very pretty with the 1920s architectures and streets lined with mature trees.
_______woohoo@reddit
I wasn't talking about Highland Park, I was talking about Highland Hills.

But other than that area they were able to knock on doors and give papers fine without problems. Definitely has changed in my dads POV as someone who has been in DFW since 98 said most of the area is calm now with occasional gunshots

Someone’s only going to very specific parts of oak cliff, I see
hussyinferno@reddit
I lived there until a decade ago when trying to buy a house and got priced out of my neighborhood.
yato17z@reddit
Same here, want to buy a here but to pricey in this area. South oakcliff has more affordable homes but the area isn’t that great
Mithun1978@reddit
There are many options for $300k around me. It’s safe and now we have options for grocery stores. 75211 Zip. It’d be tough to beat that price point this close to downtown and other amenities.
yato17z@reddit
Yeah I live in 75211, we want a bigger home so looking around cedar hill area at moment
kingbendo@reddit
I live right by Tyler Vernon Station and I can tell I’m right on the line of gentrification that’s moving south. I hear gunshots probably more than most folks from Oak Cliff but it’s really mostly related to the station. I can also usually tell if the gun shots are maleficent (shooting at other people or gunfights), and instances like that are EXTREMELY few and far between. A lot of times it seems like people are shooting in their backyards or in celebration.
All talk of shooting aside, I really don’t feel unsafe here. There’s a lot to enjoy in this area and the people here have been very delightful. You get a good mix of different people and it makes the area feel alive and not like some soulless suburban vacuum like some other cities I’ve been to in DFW.
matchstick64@reddit
It is super gentrified and a lot of the character is gone, so no. It’s just like my other vanilla area now.
Dusse_Wayne@reddit
I grew up in farmers branch and moved to oak cliff …. It’s not as bad as people make it seems

OddSand7870@reddit
Back in the 90s it was crazy bad. I knew several people that got car jacked back then. As it has gentrified since then it is getting safer. Like everywhere else. There are good parts and parts I wouldn’t go around, especially at night.

YaGetSkeeted0n@reddit
I’d say no. For starters, it’s a huge area, it’s like someone painting all of an NYC borough with the same brush. Some parts are rough, some are as nice as anything north of I-30, and there’s everything in between as well.
MarthaGail@reddit
Lol, I was gonna say... have you never been outside on NYE or July 4th?
I live in North Oak Cliff and I actually do hear gunshots often. Probably at least once a month.
etchasketchpandemic@reddit
I live in North Oak Cliff and only hear gunshots on holidays and they always sound pretty far away. Our different experiences show that even what people refer to as “North Oak Cliff” is very different and diverse. The OP really needs to be more specific about where in Oak Cliff they are asking about.

Not bad if you have lived in inner city. Suburban folks might get scared if they go further south than Bishop Arts.
Come on the 4th of July and hear some fireworks 😂
CharlieTeller@reddit
It’s yuppie and hood depending on where you are. Most of the homes and apartments are nice. There’s great places to eat. Gotta go a little bit to a decent store. But there are still vagrants wandering around and crime. Typical big city gentrified area things. You won’t get shot walking down the street. But I wouldn’t recommend ground floor apartments and your car will probably be more likely than it already is to get broken into
No__thisispatrick69@reddit
It's worse. Don't go there. And tell your friends not to go there either.
RealtorReichert@reddit
We see what you are doing there. 😂
31770j@reddit
Oak Cliff is bigger than San Francisco, and in a lot of ways like San Francisco. It has its good parts and bad parts, is rich with history, and very diverse (though some may argue there is an active attempt to reduce the diversity of the cliff thru gentrification). Dallas would be much more boring without Oak Cliff. I grew up near Cockrell Hill and Illinois, my parents house was broken into 3 times between ‘88-‘94, their cars stolen from grocery store lots, gun shots were my lullaby, but I never felt scared. I still love the hood to this day.
Worth-Expression6583@reddit
Comparing Oak Cliff and San Fran? Get your eyes checked.
RealtorReichert@reddit
They are probably referring to the vibe and culture.
yadiyadi2014@reddit
Oak Cliff is massive. It’s home to some of the best neighborhoods in Dallas. It’s home to some of the worst. And has everything in between. It’s a small town feel for sure but still a very urban vibe. Crime issues are more rampant, but it’s usually petty stuff. You have to keep your wits about you still. but overall I adore living here and the community. Lots of really cool things happening in oak cliff.

No. It has hotspots, but I’ve been around the Cliff most of my life, and it’s peaceful, the people are chill, mostly, and it, in a way, feels separated from the rest of the city. I’m from Duncanville and I lived on Woodhaven when I was in High school. That’s the first street on the right when you are going south on Cockrell hill after RedBird Lane. So I was in oak cliff the second I walked to the end of my street. 67@20 is one of the hotspots. Doesn’t matter what side of the intersection that you are on, it’s wild. Also, it doesn’t matter what direction you head when you are leaving that area, if you go two street lights down you are good.

I don't know, I don't live there. But I've lived in Texas long enough to remember the 'Welcome to Oak Cliff' shirts that show a bathroom-symbol person with a gun carrying another person with the intent to put them in a trunk.
I can't remember the incident that the shirt was spoofing I just remember that the shirts were banned and it was a big deal.
