Cool, fast, early cat. Pre the big Hobie invasion. Thanks đ

This is super cool, but itâs not hard to see why the Hobies took over so completely. This looks like a nightmare to set up. I love that there are people out there still maintaining boats like this.

In my experience, the Shark is a much better performer than Hobie Alterâs 16 foot boat that was so popular, but you are correct that Hobie did dominate the market. I would argue that it wasnât because of performance though.
The Shark is faster because the hull has much less rocker, daggerboards improved pointing and reduces leeway. Tacking around one daggerboard is much easier than getting a Hobie around. I think it is less likely to pitchpole too, but Iâm not certain about that. Then there is the little detail that it is 20â rather than 16â. I think that Hobie did produce a 20â to compete but I have not seen many of them, not nearly as popular as the 16.
I remember the setup being quite easy and the folding design makes trailering and storing simpler.

The hobie 16 is one of the fastest, non-foiling, beach cats ever made. Its top speed is just around 30knots, could be faster. You need a foiling cat to beat it in top speed. Around the buoys is obviously a different story
Elder_sender@reddit
I find that claim implausible. Do you have some evidence to back it up?
MapleDesperado@reddit
A look at PY numbers supports your feeling on this. Of course, those are âaround the canâ numbers. Top speed numbers will be harder to find, but I canât believe the H16 sails as fast as the H18, the A-class, the Tornado, the F18, the F16, etc.
rickadandoo@reddit
Yeah but they weigh a million pounds. Beautiful boats though
FIy4aWhiteGuy@reddit
Hobie Alter lived in Dana Point - his boats are designed for light wind.
Galmaraz555@reddit
The hobie 16 is not a light wind boat by any means

If you didn't know better you would have thought he was hauling scrap from a construction site. Those look like pallets and 2x4s and maybe like a flagpole or underground pipe

Where I live we call that "accident waiting to happen". NGL though, wish I had a folding cat I could trail around.

I have to resist responding âa boatâ to every post like this. Unfortunately this instinct was installed when I became a dad
semghost@reddit
I called it âan accident waiting to happenâ when I opened the picture. Maybe I pre-downloaded a mom instinct?
