The last thing I think of when I see what looks like sausage gravy is "Muslim cuisine"
DanJDare@reddit
Bet it's chipped beef.
ConsistentCover2527@reddit (OP)
You know it.
ondehunt@reddit
Aka shit on a shingle
DanJDare@reddit
Not entirely sure how it can be both Halal and Kosher but I imagine it's close enough to both for anyone to give too much of a damn.
moby561@reddit
Anything Kosher is automatically Halal but idk if it’s goes the other way around.
DanJDare@reddit
At the risk of being painful isn't there a different in the slaughtering practice? I don't imagine kosher meat being slaughtered with an Islamic prayer.
moby561@reddit
In Islam, consumption of food from the “People of the Book” are considered Halal. This is not universal amongst all Muslims, but most Sunni diaspora in the US that care enough about only eating Halal would agree with the sentiment. Growing up, not being able to eat food prepared by Christians (given the US is Christian and Christians are also People of the Book) was explained away by the idea that Christians used to have dietary restrictions and guidelines that they stopped following. Not sure if there’s actually any truth of that in reality but the general consensus.
DanJDare@reddit
I am (lol clearly) not a religious scholar of any sort but I have read that Christianity used to have a ton of orthodox rules on fasting and dietary guidelines that fell by the wayside at some point. Coz I was specifically curious as to when the dietary rules of Christianity fell off and what they used to be. I was interested in religious fasting, feasting, etc.
Frankly (opening myself up to being cancelled here especially as an agnostic) but the amount of people who are apparently christian yet embody none of the values nor adhere to any of the tenets of the religion beyond (maybe) lobbing up to church once a week leads me to question what's left of it by and large. I understand that Christianity is a biiig collection of religions.
moby561@reddit
That’s what I was told as a kid about Christians BUT that’s being told to me by other Muslims. I’m, also, not a scholar but growing up my dad was pretty conservative, but today I live per secularly.
Kitchen-Macaroon-582@reddit
Jewish prayers are to the same God as Muslim prayers so it's all good. In the past, our neighbourhood used to be mixed, and everyone would share food.
LebaneseLion@reddit
Kosher being automatically halal is not true save some opinions. Some alcohols are kosher, but it definitely does not make it halal. Same with meat, the butcher has to do the process in accordance to halal standards.
moby561@reddit
Obviously the item but be halal but the meat is considered zabeeha.
Ruiner5@reddit
It does not. Although there’s been some discussions on whether it’s better to eat halal over non kosher if there’s no kosher food around. Some people say it is, some people say it doesn’t matter at that point since halal food isn’t kosher anyway
moby561@reddit
I didn’t think so because Kosher tends to be more stringent than Halal. But growing up my father only ate Halal and Kosher was usually the only option in South Florida in the early 2000’s.
zackmophobes@reddit
cant mix meat and milk in Kosher food. so if this is creamed chipped beef def not kosher
natfutsock@reddit
I thought that was just parve specifically
ConsistentCover2527@reddit (OP)
No milk involved
Thereelgerg@reddit
What's it made of?
ConsistentCover2527@reddit (OP)
Kosher beef sausage and Kosher bisquick
Pale_Row1166@reddit
This isn’t kosher, chipped beef has milk. But maybe the prison version doesn’t.
Nuppusauruss@reddit
The gravy is typically made with milk which would mean it's not kosher.
azaghal1502@reddit
Chipped beef in a simple gravy, served on toast.
It was a pretty common dish in WW2 military, fittingly named "Shit on a shingle".
TraciTheRobot@reddit
What’s up with the glop of peanut butter
ConsistentCover2527@reddit (OP)
It's what they give you instead of pork sausage
IAMACHRISTMASWIZARD@reddit
i have to know how this is even somewhat equivalent
godwontpiss@reddit
Protein? Maybe?
tkot2021@reddit
Protein and fats
gerblnutz@reddit
I dont think milk and meat is kosher
ButterRolla@reddit
I would assume the gravy is thickened by starch or flour and not with actual milk.
Thereelgerg@reddit
Of course it is. Adding milk would thin it out, not thicken it.
I think the question is what's the liquid that's being thickened into a gravy?
peppermintmeow@reddit
Bisquick.
ButterRolla@reddit
Oh right, I dunno. Maybe it's just flour and water. Usually when I make gravy I just use meat juices, water, salt and flour.
DebateZealousideal57@reddit
The liquid you would be thickening with flour for white gravy is butter and milk…
ConsistentCover2527@reddit (OP)
Good call
TheDarkNebulous@reddit
I worked at a place that made kosher certified whey protein for a while. Is milk not kosher?
3-goats-in-a-coat@reddit
Meat in milk is forbidden by the Torah. You can have meat. You can have cheese. But you aren't supposed to put them together.
RedSparkls@reddit
That’s so sad :( those are like all the best food combinations
xXAssmaster420Xx@reddit
Not if it's mixed with meat
FlyingDreamWhale67@reddit
How can shit on a shingle be kosher/halal? It's my understanding that meat and milk can't be mixed in kosher rules, and chipped beef has dairy components.
ConsistentCover2527@reddit (OP)
It's kosher beef mixed with non dairy
Thereelgerg@reddit
Mixed with non-dairy what?
peppermintmeow@reddit
OP commented further up
wolflordval@reddit
Non-dairy dairy, duh
FlyingDreamWhale67@reddit
Understandable
Law3W@reddit
Jail I worked had served vegetarian meals to those requesting halal or kosher.
ConsistentCover2527@reddit (OP)
Jail i lived in for 3 years gave us this every Thursday.Sometimes Sunday too if they were out of biscuits.
Xavmarts@reddit

LordDumbassTheThird@reddit
A shit on a shingle?
badlukk@reddit
Something about quantifying it as "A shit on a shingle" vs just "shit on a shingle" is destroying me.
maxperception55@reddit
Just one deuce
captstix@reddit
I mean, we're not rich
BurtCracklin@reddit
...and I can hear a bell ring...
ApolloAuto@reddit
Never thought of shit on a shingle as being kosher - but I guess it is.
screwyoushadowban@reddit
It is if you use water, but every recipe I've ever seen for shit on a shingle, including old military ones, uses dairy along with the meat, which would not be kosher.
Fast_Ad7203@reddit
Im curious why is it called muslim vs jewish
Sargash@reddit
THats some proper shit on a shingle
shackbleep@reddit
Pretty sure my grandmother used those plates around the holidays when I was a kid.
Potential_Wish4943@reddit
Considering mixing milk and meat is forbidden in kosher dining, im not sure how this is a jewish plate lol.
panicpixiememegirl@reddit
Just say halaal/kosher lol
