Xian Modern Ark (MA) 7000 turboprop regional airliner - Chinese obscurity
Posted by KodoSky@reddit | WeirdWings | View on Reddit | 36 comments
The MA7000, developed as the successor to the less than successful MA6000, itself based on Chinese an-24 was announced in 2007 and its first flight was scheduled for 2022. However, there has been no news regarding the regional airliner project since 2021, and the test flight appears not to have gone ahead, reportedly due to being unable to obtain Canadian-built engines. While there has been no official announcements, the project could very likely have been quitely cancelled.

“Based on the Chinese an24 and definitely definitely definitely NOT the Q400. Noo way no how! No we can’t even spell Bombardier let alone steal their designs!”
Past_Guarantee700@reddit
More ATR72 with that belly pod for the landing gear

Good eye, not wrong

The very fact that you can't tell whether it's "copied" from a DASH-8 or an ATR should tell you something.
Unfair_Run_170@reddit
I came here to say: that's a dash-8!
Sonoda_Kotori@reddit
That's probably the only turboprop airliner he knows about.
The MA series is literally a bunch of An-24s with seats lol
66hans66@reddit
Doesn't Xian build parts of the ATR?
dsaddons@reddit
Yea why didn't they make it look the spruce goose?
xrelaht@reddit
You mean the Spruce Moose?
Sonoda_Kotori@reddit
What a stupid comment. This thing has nothing to do with a Q400 - it's literally an An-24 with some seats.

I mean apart from being a T-tail turboprop, it doesn’t really have much in common with the DHC-8-400. This happens a lot in aviation where people see two similar designs for the same role and assume they must be copying each other, but there are only so many ways to build a turboprop airliner. If Xian made it any differently, you’d have people commenting how they “stole” the design for the BAe ATP, Fokker 60, Saab 2000, etc.

Indonesian N220?
CallOfCorgithulhu@reddit
How dare other companies look at the design lessons previous aircraft have learned, and apply that general idea, that is proven to work well, to a new design?! Lower development costs are not important to me, I demand interesting and bizarre aircraft shapes.

Please forward your CV and a cover letter to Blohm & Voss as soon as possible.

Ever heard form follows function ?
This is a prime example of that. All four the Q400, the ATR72, the AN24 and the MA7000 are built for the same purpose, flying to the same fields, on the same routes.
That they look similar is kinda obvious.
sofixa11@reddit
No, it's a tube with wings and props, obviously it's a copy of that one specific plane (Q400), not any of the other similar ones (ATR) or the one it's literally a derivative of (An-24).
Regular_Pea4731@reddit
Technically he does wrote «successor» to MA6000 which does mean that is replacing, not that it’s based on… however, calling an-24 a Chinese and not Ukrainian pave though..
Usernamenotta@reddit
Calling them Ukrainian and not Soviet though ...
KodoSky@reddit (OP)
Chinese made them under license

Looks nothing like this aircraft, thanks for proving my point.
jocax188723@reddit
A Chinese retrofit of a Chinese improvement (MA600) of a Chinese stretched passenger version (MA60) of a Chinese licensed copy (Y-7) of a Ukranian plane (An-24) from the fifties.
I mean, if it works...
miksy_oo@reddit
It's not a Ukrainian plane it's a Soviet one
thewillz@reddit
It was designed and manufactured in Ukraine, which was a part of the Soviet Union at the time.
MrScootini@reddit
Huh… if i squint it almost looks like an ATR!
ketchup1345@reddit
It's not been cancelled. China is developing their own domestically produced turboprop engine.
Sonoda_Kotori@reddit
Who even is still funding the Modern Ark program? Everytime I hear about the MA-60 or MA-600 in service it's nothing but negative reviews.
DisregardLogan@reddit
Is that not an ATR-72
SignificantKale3459@reddit
Chinese trash. This factory is notoriously known for making unsafe aircraft. They even tried to offer the New Zealand government free planes for tourism transport, and their offers were rejected.

DHXi-8
usernamechexoit@reddit
That’s the plane that had the collapsing landing gears. My company consulted with them to try and rework the design so the legs would stay straight while the plane was rolling
Usernamenotta@reddit
And then some madman thinks about slapping some NK-12VMs on the prototype. That would be hilarious

Thanks for sharing 👍

Resembles a Dash-8
CAVU1331@reddit
Definitely closer to an ATR with the fuselage mounted gear.
