Is she worth saving?

I got given a 240z, problem is it's been in a field for the better part of 4 years, locked with the engine exposed for some time. I want to do my best to save it but I'm scared of it being a money pit with no end. Rust on back right side and in the middle right. Somehow from what I could see interior was actually alright(locked). I for some reason didn't look at the frame. Pls all comments help.
knightmiles@reddit
Profit wise no, for the sake of it and the fun of it, yeah.
Boostedacr01@reddit
Don’t listen to these sissies. If it has a title and you’re mechanically inclined I think it’s absolutely worth saving. Not sure why everyone is saying to junk it. You’re going to to spend way more than it’s worth but that’s the nature of being a car guy. Even if the factory l24 is just that cars a good candidate for plenty of cool swaps.
Generation-X_Leader@reddit (OP)
No title, no keys, but I know how to hotwire
Boostedacr01@reddit
Well, depending on what state you’re in the no title thing could be a huge barrier. That would certainly make it harder to justify the time and effort this thing is going to need.
Significant-Brush99@reddit
Not really. There’s steps to take but if you start it with bonded title at the beginning of the project by the time you get actual title the project will be half finished not even on the road yet lol
Boostedacr01@reddit
That’s not true in every state
WildKarrdesEmporium@reddit
I have a gorgeous '85 735i that I can't drive because I don't have the title, and my state has no provision for getting a title if you don't already have one.
Generation-X_Leader@reddit (OP)
Arkansas, it's not crazy hard
loubcafra125@reddit
Depends where you are exactly but there are law in lots of places for abandoned cars (essentially you have to do some research, prove that the car is indeed abandoned and then you can just claim it) do some research on that
If you can claim it and have somewhere to store it I'd try to save it with the understanding that it will be a long project and that you can't sink your bank account in it all at once. Do a little more to it bit by bit until it's eventually a full car (as long as the frame isn't completely rotted. If it is then sell the interior and everything else salvageable)
Kruger_Smoothing@reddit
Not rotted to the gills like that. It's a parts car at best.
More-Piece6384@reddit
It has a 280Z engine and accessories. You sure it's a 240z? Either way, that thing is long gone. The pressure washer will probably blow holes through it. I really don't even see any parts worth selling. It would cost the price of two Z's to restore that thing.

SNTNL_G60@reddit
Every try saving a 240z? I have a friend doing it now and it took him over a year to find a fender
SmoothCriminal0678@reddit
It's totally salvageable, depending on rust on the lower body.
goldenn-graphite@reddit
The way I see it, every car is worth it, it's just a matter of wether you're willing to put in the time, energy, and money. No bug deal if not, could make a good parts car otherwise.
Then_Ad_9748@reddit
Sure if you got 100-200k lying around lmao
NoOilStart@reddit
No, that metal is so pitted it all needs to be replaced. You would have to start with a chem dip which is a couple thousand of rip 5-10k and that’s just to get rid of rust. Then about 10-12k in epoxy and paint work to seal it off quick.

Parts car
c0cknb9ll@reddit
I personally belive every car is worth saving, barring the pt- cruiser. I would say, if you can't afford it to be a endless money pit, salvage whatever parts you can and sell them, would help out other people who are trying to save these cars.
CanoegunGoeff@reddit
To be fair, I grew up with parents and neighbors who were really into the PT Cruiser scene of the 2000s. I think they’re terrible cars now that I’m older, but I’ve got a small nostalgic soft spot that appreciates the following they had at the time. At their height, the PT clubs were going extremely hard- the neons, the huge subwoofers, the under glow, the flames, the turbos, the rat rods, the Ute conversions, the RC models, the track days, it was all there, and it was actually very fun when I was little.
I’ve not seen an actually nice and cared for modified PT since then, but if I ever do come across one that harks back to that era, I’ll respect the hell out of it.
Every car has is niche following.
Justprunes-6344@reddit
Liked mine till engine blew up at 64000 miles
CanoegunGoeff@reddit
Dang, that’s surprisingly low milage for a blown engine, even in PT terms lol
thatonegaygalakasha@reddit
There's a very cleanly modified Pt Cruiser GT that runs around town, haven't managed to snap a pic yet.
Flashthebeast@reddit
I remember when they first came out buyers were put on wait lists. I had a science teacher in middle school that ordered one, and when the dealership delivered it to her at the school, she took the whole class out to look at it. I hated them then, but I enjoy seeing solid survivors now. Them and the HHr. I love halfassed modern day retros and wagons.
CanoegunGoeff@reddit
My mom was initially looking at a Subaru Outback, because with little two kids, she was starting to get annoyed with her tiny two door Tercel. She apparently got such a good deal on the PT though, that she chose that over the Outback, and at some point when I was older, I’d jokingly throw shade at my mom for buying the ugly PT instead of what I now view as a super cool old Subaru wagon, but honestly, looking back on it, experiencing the weird PT scene is something I don’t think I’d trade now. I always enjoy sharing about it too because there seems to hardly be any remnants of that PT scene, just residual traces at best, a handful of old photos floating around is basically all that’s left. So for anyone who wasn’t there, it basically didn’t happen. A weird anomaly of a car culture that came and went within only a handful of years.
Flashthebeast@reddit
I hated working on them when I was in automotive. Even the basic stuff was a pain in the ass. But I still look for the delivery van versions on FB marketplace. Hoping to find one for less than 2K to use for a “Battle Car”.
Reaper621@reddit
I used to own an 03. I never modified it, but took great care of mine. In 133k miles, it had a transmission crack from a rock on the highway, and the engine locked up when a mouse decided that the belt was where it lived right before I started the car one day. It wasn't worth repairing after the engine fiasco.
I kinda liked it while it was still a good running car. Shitty gas mileage (the shape must likely), horribly ugly, but until the mouse it was a really reliable little car.
Nhojj_Whyte@reddit
I've never seen or even heard of a ute converted PT Cruiser. That honestly sounds amazing
CanoegunGoeff@reddit
Look up PT Cruiser Ute on Google images, lots of great examples!
c0cknb9ll@reddit
This is really awesome to hear about! I didn't grow up around any car culture but was familiar with pt cruisers, my distaste for them comes from the few times I was driven around in one. I have actually 0 negative things to truly say about a cruiser other than the fact that they're not for me
CanoegunGoeff@reddit
My mom’s car for most of my childhood was a PT, and when we moved to where I mostly grew up, our neighbor across the street had three of them, all of them had something special about them- two of them were the turbo GT model and the other was some other special limited edition. They were blue, orange, and yellow, all bright metallic colors, and all of them, even my mom’s more bland silver one was a limited edition and had special American Racing wheels from the factory with body color matched hubcaps and trim. The suede interiors were actually great quality as well.
I will say, they weren’t the best looking car, and they certainly weren’t the most reliable, especially the turbo models, and they definitely aren’t anything I’d want to touch myself, just not my taste either, but the scene back then was pretty wild and very diverse. We were out at some sort of PT club event almost every weekend when I was little.
I think it was really cool to have grown up among such a weird, niche car culture, and it makes me really appreciate that I found my own niche community around 3rd gen Camrys, since my first car was my grandmother’s 96 Camry that was passed to me in high school and has since become my manual swapped and soon to be turbo weekend project car after years of being my daily driver. I love weird niche car cultures so much. They just always seem to hit different, even if it’s a fucking weird ass or seemingly insignificant car lol.
And it’s always wild too to see what people will hold onto. Always good stories.

c0cknb9ll@reddit

Careful-Total-3216@reddit
Best would be to start by getting it out of the field and cleaned up. From there you could get a better idea of what you are working with. It looks fairly complete and they are sought after. Would be a shame to part out a car that's not completely ruined.
Nukecore@reddit
I would say use it as a practice car for all the skills you want to learn you will be up on the value no matter what that is what I did on my first one and don’t regret it one bit just know the cheaper you go the more work you put in

Get a better look at it, especially underneath. The top doesn't look too bad, even that back corner could be worse. If it's rusted away underneath you can always scrap it or leave it like others are saying. But it might be alright, it looks like there's still space under it. Which would mean the body hasn't been resting in the dirt.
P0SSPWRD@reddit
Pull it out and get it onto a hard surface where you can go around and up under it to see how much damage it has.
T800COMINGFORU@reddit
It’s always worth digging it out and seeing what’s left. If it’s free, you definitely should get it outta there and wash it up, then you decide how much of a headache you’re willing to deal with. Worst comes to worst, you sell it as a parts car to help someone in need. Beats letting it rot away further
instigator1331@reddit
If you have the motivation
Anything is worth saving
throttlejockey907@reddit
It’s hard to say from pictures- but honestly it depends on what you want. For some it’s the journey- others the destination. You should check out budget builds on YouTube. They drag stuff like this out of the trees all the time and make fun little projects. They’ve done everything from an old 911 to old dodge trucks to a maverick that literally burned to a crisp. They spend very little money and have fun cars they tinker with over time. That Porsche is getting downright nice- and they literally pulled it out of a junkyard where it had been rotting.
Another train of thought is to get it running and see what it’s like. Running, with all the crud cleaned off, it would be worth a ton More, at the very least- and someone may make it nice. When you part the classics they are gone forever. Have you seen modern cars? Clearly the classics ain’t comin’ back.
AnotherIronicPenguin@reddit
These Datsuns rusted like crazy, about 20 years back I picked up a couple of them as parts cars in California and brought them home. One of them kinda fell apart on the trip, we picked it up with a forklift to get it off the trailer and it broke in half. Neglected in the woods for 4 years, those frame rails are probably made of hopes and dreams at this point.
WildKarrdesEmporium@reddit
Yes, but not financially.
LoopsAndBoars@reddit
I’d save that in a heartbeat. Frame is probably ok unless it’s been on salt roads. If you’re gonna learn to do body work, it’s worth it. If you’re planning on paying someone, you can spend 15k easy on body/paint alone.
Dirtymopar616@reddit
You literally posted in the projectcar Reddit and you’re worried about us telling you it won’t be a money pit 👀 it definitely WONT be a money pit to make it a project care🫢
Alarmed-Extension289@reddit

Huger_and_shinier@reddit
If it really means something to you, then it can be rebuilt. All project cars are money pits - don’t let that stop you.
If you don’t really care about that particular car, it could be a good parts car for one in better shape
oztrailrunner@reddit
Worse shit had been revived, but at what cost. If that was given to me, I'd spend as much time as I could pulling any parts that might sell.
Doors, bonnet and hinges, hatch and hinges, headlights and surrounds. All the glass. Anything inside that's salvageable. You might not see value in that little surround under the dash, but it might be a part someone's been looking for for a while.
Pack all your tools, some beer and a couple of friends. Strip it in a day, while having a laugh with your mates.
rqx82@reddit
This is the best answer. All the little trim bits that are salvageable, the glass, anything that looks like it’s a pain in the ass to find should be pulled and sold so a better shell can be more complete. Rest of it can be scrapped unfortunately.
ValuableItchy@reddit
This is the answer
adydurn@reddit
Right, it looks like it's still straight, and reasonably dry where uncovered. There's almost certainly little bit here and there that someone, somewhere, has been looking for 6 months.
If it has sentimental value it doesn't look like it would be impossible to return to the road, although you can'tsay for certainwithout seeing the floor and frames... but I can say it would be prohibitively expensive if you just want to flip it.
If you are looking to learn how to weld and cut, it could be a good project though, just accept that it's gone and anything extra is, well, extra.

tripper_reed@reddit
Sweet man I just finished a 5k sq ft dream shop and these pics rang every bell in my head. I would without a doubt do it.
Now after the excitement has worn off and logic has returned... parts car is probably much more realistic. Unless you have the space and resources to do a full tear down restoration. Doesn't mean you shouldn't or can't. Just means this is probably past reasonable for anyone without the things I described. Its hard to say from 7 pictures but my opinion is advanced level project. It also looks like every single piece will need to be repaired, removed, replaced, redone etc...

My brain says strip for parts and scrap the rest. Buy a knackered 280 and use them. Free cars are dangerous financially. guybro194@reddit
I’m watching the newest video by Mike finnegan about the rotsun, it was meant to be.
Absentmindedgenius@reddit
Not really. Sheet metal from back then is easy to rust through. The motors are pretty robust though. I had a 280zx turbo that I got for $300 and got it running without much work. I got rid of it because the cowl started rusting away at the bottom of the windshield, and body work scares me.
It'd be fun to get the motor running at least.
Bahlam@reddit
Unless it held special sentimental value, ie my mom gave birth to me inside the car, and I also had plenty of money to spare, I would not sink the money and time to restore it.

bouncing_bumble@reddit

HoboMoonMan@reddit
Looks pretty solid, you’d have to pull it out and check the undercarriage to really assess if it’s salvageable or not. Engine doesn’t matter, swap in a sbc and call it a day.
id_rather_wildcard@reddit
Yes, it is worth it. The person that's gets it woulds be very happy to fix it
mrjbacon@reddit
I'm gonna go against the grain and say that yes, it's worth saving, but only if you can haul it out and check the body and frame for rot. I see a fair bit of rust, but if it's structurally sound, I see no reason that you can't resurrect the car.
Granted, it would be expensive and probably require a full resto.
Guac_in_my_rarri@reddit
Hi Op, that looks like it would be a good donor 240.
The largest issue with sitting Z's is rust. The floors and fender edges rust first. The only way to fix this is new repro floors which means a lot of welding. I don't want to say sports are plentiful but there's enough to build a car. The motor in the z, held up decently well. The original manual trans in particular are getting harder to find so many end up LS/t56 swapped. The L engine wasn't bad it's just a mediocre carb engine that is a bit slow today. Some folks daily drive restomodded Z's and others drive on the OE equipment. Ultimately what you put into the Z is what you get out. You will not sell a restomodded Z for a profit-there's too many. You best bet, is yo make this Z a donor car: use and sell what you don't need. Z folks will always pay for OE stuff
Kotef@reddit
As a resto no. Parts yes. But if you wanted to put in time on fab you could rat rod it.
Rat rodding hasn't made its way to cars from this era yet could be an early adopter
Crewstage8387@reddit
Anything can be saved given enough time and money. I this case unless it has sentimental value and you have lots of money. Take what ever parts you can and sell them
Shoddy_Bet3749@reddit
Hows the floor. Thats the real question
PsionFrost@reddit
Given that's a 280 not a 240, you can get ones in almost roadworthy condition for less than it would cost to even turn that thing into a rolling shell. I see a lot with knackered interiors, so if that one is actually good on the inside, you can get a super cheap mostly running 280 with a destroyed interior for peanuts and use this interior assuming it is actually in good shape.
bootheels@reddit
The car is probably badly rusted underneath as well. This is not a project for anyone that doesn't have plenty of money, and knowledge about these vehicles. Sell off the parts to save other cars.

10k just to get it running, for an entire resto 20
SeasonedBatGizzards@reddit
That seems doable. Might have issues with reg/titling trying to get it on the road but I think you can def get it stripped down and rebuilt for that if you do ALL the labor yourself. Main issue I think is rust, but it doesn’t look too bad. 4yrs isn’t a whole lot to be sitting
Def sit down and price it out. Google body panels and full suspension kits. Price an engine swap. Rust and paint repairs. Big one is any tools you might not have. Do you have tools to rebuild an engine? What about painting supplies? Welder?
No_Albatross_5897@reddit
You could maybe get it running with $10k depending on what it needs and how much work you can do yourself.

Dutch_Disaster@reddit
That depends on what the shell is like. If shes rotten away.. You might be better off parting her out.
YousureWannaknow@reddit
Everything is money pit 😅 Generally, get it out of that place, clean it and check how it's condition seems to be
bimmerlucas@reddit
No but I’m sure someone can make use of parts off this car
Generation-X_Leader@reddit (OP)
Thinking about it to help out, wouldn't sell em for much either since it was given
Competitive_Cell_452@reddit
I may be interested, what region are you located?
Busterlimes@reddit
Good, you wont get much given their condition
Any-Frame-1903@reddit
No, straight to the crusher.
ursixx@reddit
Or lawn art.
Generation-X_Leader@reddit (OP)
I appreciate your honesty
TrashPandaPirate@reddit
Worth a shot, but largely no, unless miraculously the frame is largely rust free, then maybe its a rat rod project, but judging by the rest of it, thats a long shot.
Id say part it out, the engine looks to have some good bits on it and use that money on something you will sink slightly less money into
ProtoCulture14@reddit
She gone…
Dieselpump510@reddit
Reach out to MikeFinnegan with Roadkill. He might want some of the parts for the Rotsun.
Dieselpump510@reddit
Nevermind. It’s not a 240.
Vfrnut@reddit
That’s nothing . There videos of people restoring worse . And modding worse car than that to make them unique. Go for it .
harmospennifer@reddit
My heart says yes but oh lord, the rust…
JustNota--@reddit
Nah... Too much rust for a unibody car not much will be left to save once you media blast it.
Filthy510@reddit
If you didn't change a thing, but that terd had 270-400 horsepower, with the suspension and tires to make it all make sense... then yeah, absolutely.
Ask me how I know.
RaiseTheMinimumRage8@reddit
Until you dig her out and see what’s going on it’s hard to say
ZeGermanHam@reddit
Uh, we know what's going on here. This Z is looong gone.
Chevrolicious@reddit
The reality is that you won't know the extent of the damage until it's pulled out of the field and examined. I can tell you that these things are prone to rust in normal conditions, let alone sitting out in a field.
If you're worried about it becoming a money pit, let me lay your worries to rest: it is. If it isn't completely rotten, it might be worth it for somebody with the time, money, and experience, but my bet is that the rust probably goes pretty deep.
That said, I'm sure there are plenty of parts on that car that someone could use, and at the very least, it's a parts car that might help someone else with their build or restoration. I'm willing to bet that motor is saveable, so long as it wasn't blown up when it was parked. You never know.
But as far as a restoration goes, or even just getting it running and driving if it isn't totally rusted out, it's gonna be expensive and time consuming.
viperman6869@reddit
Well first off that’s NOT a 240… so no, it’s not worth saving. But it may have some parts off it that could be sold
Careflwhatyouwish4@reddit
Probably, unless the frame is rusted. It won't be worth what it costs money wise after you're done, but it'll be exactly the way you want it and that goes beyond the money. That's my philosophy anyway.
whynotsharks@reddit
The way it's sitting and exterior rust makes me think that the floor is Bluetooth now.
MadmanMaddox@reddit
Let her rust in peace. Ashes to ashes, rust to dust. It's probably home to many a critter.
Nathan_reynolds@reddit
Look of the roadkill rotsun you can save this if they can keep that shitbox alive. Its a free car just get it runbing dont make it pretty
obr_kevin@reddit
Absolutely a money pit. Unless it has some sentimental value I would sell the parts and get what you can for it. Unless you have the time and skills to make a tube chassis for it.
tylernutman@reddit
No
Jojothereader@reddit
You got the title
hambonelicker@reddit
Hell no, and it’s a 280 not a 240.
Relevant-Artichoke11@reddit
If you have a money printing machine, yes. Answer is always yes.
Falba70@reddit
Pull her out and bring her back to life she deserves it
homepup@reddit
Looks like it might be 280Z based on the back tail light section. The engine looks like a 280Z as well but it’s not uncommon for engine swaps in those models.
Looks similar to the 240Z I picked up a few years ago. Mine had sat in a field for 20-30 years and nearly the entire bottom was rusted out so you should definitely get a better look at the underside before making a decision. Floors and rails tend to disappear quickly on the early Z cars.
Recent-Campaign911@reddit
Unfortunately it is not wether it's worth it rather how much are you willing to spend. I recently started working at a resto shop were vehicles regularly exceed 50k worth of work.
1leggeddog@reddit
it will be a never-ending money pit with the car's current state.
Zed32_Customs@reddit
No, but I would. Rip out that engine and shove a chevy 350 in there. Rotsun on a real budget.
AmoebaPrize@reddit
Roadkill it. (The show)
turborallyterror@reddit
It looks peaceful right where it is.
Generation-X_Leader@reddit (OP)
Idk, it reminds me of someone who has lost the will to keep going, not as peacefully as it is neglected
turborallyterror@reddit
😞
Driftshiftfox@reddit
I would like to say it's worth keeping. But these were rust prone on the best of days. I don't think two decades in a damp forest would have been good to the floorboards and subframe.
velowa@reddit
Do you have a title?
Generation-X_Leader@reddit (OP)
Brother I don't even have the keys
velowa@reddit
Title and keys are part of the equation. Look into what it would take to get a title in your state. You’ll probably need to get a bonded title. Btw, Z cars have some specific rust areas. Look those up and check those spots on this car. That rusted in half muffler is not a great indicator for what the rest of the car looks like underneath.
DiabeticIguana77@reddit
No unfortunately, these cars were unfortunately some of the ones more prone to rusting, if you wanted to keep the chassis to keep it the "same car" but replace the fuck out of everything rotted and rusted, you'd spend as much as a pristine properly restored one, and that'd be just metalwork, you'd still have to factor in interior and paint work,on top of the mechanical work necessary, which is likely a new drivetrain altogether
It's a cool find, but monetarily you could buy a museum quality example for less than the cost of restoring this, or 5-6 really good ones
skafreak1408@reddit
Since it’s free I’d say it’s worth a shot but you’re gonna need to get it out to see what you’re up against.
Ok_Dog_4059@reddit
Probably really rusted underneath. As much as I love these they are rust prone as hell and often far too gone to be worth anything being done to save them.
potter6670@reddit
Personally if you like the car enough and you think it's worth your time and money to fix it up for yourself and enjoy it then yes but just know you'll never get the money back you put into it.
Generation-X_Leader@reddit (OP)
I don't know if I could sell it if I got it running even, shoot even if I got it rolling
potter6670@reddit
I mean if you got it running and driving someone would probably buy it there is a bit of love for those cars if you find the right people
emzirek@reddit
And I want to see updates

Scrumpuddle@reddit
Get her out and have a few shops take a look, you'd be surprised honestly
Blu_yello_husky@reddit
No. That car is too far gone. Even if you dropped a new engine in it, the interior, body, and electrical is all gutted from sitting outside for that long. You'd be putting tens of thousands of dollars into a car that wont be worth more than 20k when its all said and done. Better off saving your money and getting a z that is in even halfway better shape than this
ParticularFar8574@reddit
That really depends on how bad the rust is. Send it to Tijuana. Many people do, there's a body shop that does really good work for crazy amazing prices.
SirBobSwarley@reddit
I'd at least pull it from the spot to get a better look at her
Obvious-Dinner-1082@reddit
I would, but I also know that’s a money pit.
thecocainespider@reddit
This is one of my favorite cars in the world, I hope to have one some day. That said, that is ¼Z, ¾rust. Scrapper 🥲
boneskid1@reddit
Personally it might be a good candidate for a rat rod situation
