What are the cars that make you happy just by seeing them?
Posted by sendintheotherclowns@reddit | askcarguys | View on Reddit | 338 comments
I'm talking about that deep sense of joy, the ones that you'll drive around the block again just to get another look.
Coming hot off the back of the "cars that piss you off" thread.
For me:
- Shelby Cobra, doesn't even have to be genuine.
- 20B Eunos Cosmo.
- Toyota 2000GT.
My own car also makes me very happy, but nothing like those.
TildeGunderson@reddit
Honestly, any car that's in good condition that's 25+ years old makes me happy. I just love the shape of simpler cars.
I'm kind of lucky, because my neighbourhood has a bunch of 90s survivors. A neighbour drives a crisp '91 Dodge Shadow, while another has a tuned '92 Geo Metro 'vert. I try to compete with them with my '90 VW Cabriolet.
But if I were to pick one, a Porsche 914 puts a massive smile on my face!
As1anR1ce@reddit
Recently saw a super clean green 914 on my way to class and it had me cheesing
max1mx@reddit
Survivors are the best. If I see a mint 1988 for Taurus I’m pumped. I was working in PA coal country and the amount of pristine 90’s cars out there was amazing. Does the coal keep the rust off?
TildeGunderson@reddit
That is curious! I figured PA didn't use salt, but it does. Maybe coal does act as a barrier against rust?
I'd bet it's mostly the people there. Not to generalize, but I'm guessing it's because town/country people take more pride in maintaining, fixing, and keeping their cars than city people. And maybe buying a new car is too much a cost where money isn't as fluid. I also find country people are more frugal, so constantly buying new new new stuff isn't as common.
Our family has a cottage in Dunnville ON, and the most common vehicle I see in town there are 2000s Ford Rangers. Not all of them are in good condition, but the fact that it feels like every 4th vehicle is one is telling.
Neuvirths_Glove@reddit
I appreciate the smaller, utilitarian cars... basic transportation. I hate that modern cars are just ridiculously large. To be honest it wouldn't bother me that much if gas went up to $10 per gallon and little, efficient cars made a comeback.
TildeGunderson@reddit
Oh yeah, same! Something about small cars feels right and efficient. As if I'm not wasting space.
Man, when I drive the VW Cabriolet next to some modern trucks, you really feel the difference of size - I'm going under the front bumper if we hit head on. I feel like I'm on a go-kart and they're on a cruise ship.
Neuvirths_Glove@reddit
Yeah, just traded in a Fiat 500 and I already miss it. My new "cmpact" SUV feels gargantuan in comparison.
halfarian@reddit
I love seeing a regular commuter car or something from the ‘90s that’s mint, showroom condition. Just a stock civic that’s pristine. Awesome.

Someone in my city has both a road legal converted Maserati MC12 Corsa and a Ferrari FXX which also got a road legal conversion (super easy where I live, basically they got signal lights, an illuminated license plate and a backup cam to make up for the lack of rear window, both still running the factory race exhaust). It makes me smile to actually see these ultra rare machines enjoyed in a way that no other person on earth is likely able to

drpepperfan69420@reddit
I tend to like more ordinary, practical but fun cars and ignore the exotic type things since it's not something I could ever afford or achieve.
- 3rd generation Mazda 3. I just love those, I had one and was the best car. I like a lot of Mazdas. 2nd gen RX-7, Protege5, Speed 3/6, and obviously all the Miatas but especially the NC Miata.
- R55 Mini Clubman, I've always wanted to own one of those but I haven't been brave enough to take one on. I'd like to buy one cheap in a couple years, tear it down to bare metal, redo literally everything and K-swap it
- Blob-eye WRX, my favorite WRX design by far. Another favorite Subaru is the Legacy GT wagon
- Any Saab, basically. Especially the 9-3 Viggen but I love the GM era 9-3 too. They're still really cool cars.
- Escort RS Turbo 3-door like the one Princess Diana had. Those things were dope
- AW11 MR2
- older Datsun Z cars
Among cars I could never afford:
- Basically any AMG Mercedes but an E63 wagon would be the bee's knees
- Alpina B7
- 718 Boxster/Cayman
- Caterham Super 7
kingramstone04@reddit
Oldsmobile delta 88 from the late 90s. Ugly ass car but it reminds me of my grandfather and that makes me smile.
dsmegst@reddit
I'm glad it brings you fond memories. We had one when I was in high school. What a piece of crap. Ours needed a 20 minute warm up regardless of weather, shifted like a bucking horse and died on the highway, stranding me to walk to a gas station to call for help. My father switched to Toyotas for life after that.
kingramstone04@reddit
Yeah, my grandfather bought only Camrys after that.
chr7stopher@reddit
Like many others, I’ll be in awe when I see a special car. But the cars that make me smile and excited are the older cars that were nothing special. The run of the mill economy and appliance cars of the day.
“Oh wow! Check out that mint condition Dodge Omni!”
“Oh my goodness, that old lady is still driving her Citation!”
“Ho-ly crap. Is that an AMC Eagle?!”
“Wtf?!? That’s a first gen Hyundai Excell! How in the hell?!”
Now that I think about it, I guess I smile with amazement when I see the occasional shit boxes from the 80’s.
But in all honesty, I smile when I see air-cooled VW’s and 911’s.
yloduck1@reddit
I’ve been to plenty of car auctions. Even some of the big ones like Barrett Jackson. Every once in a while, you’ll come across a pristine Chevy Impala from the late 1970s. Nothing special, basic trim, etc. When those survive, it’s exceptional because they just got driven into the ground by original owners rather than preserved like a Corvette.

jules083@reddit
Same.
I don't necessarily have an appreciation for, say, a 1996 Chevy Cavalier. But if I see someone driving a nice well kept one with nice wheels that looks showroom condition I still love seeing it.
There's a showroom condition 80's Chrysler K car in a garage about a mile from my house. Has like 30k miles, still has shiny paint, extremely well kept. Little old lady bought it new and takes meticulous care of it. I love that car.
pm-me-racecars@reddit
I was thinking the opposite where cars look nothing like they did from the factory.
The other day, I saw an SN95 with a snorkel on some big ass tires. Car was probably a huge piece of shit, but it made me happy to see that driving on the road.
Same for that kid with cut springs on his Lexus, with the rattle-can paint and cone filter, or the old guy with fat tires and a lump cam on his Trans AM.
jules083@reddit
Oh that too for me for sure.
A work buddy has i think a Nissan 300 that he takes to drift events. Its not a car that I would buy but I love seeing it and knowing it's still getting ran hard.
Eziekiel23_20@reddit
I did circle around to look at this mustang 2 front ended PT cruiser rat rod frankencar at Lowes a couple of weekends ago, however it did not make me happy. Pretty sure ‘queazy’ would be the more appropriate descriptor.

I like seeing new to recent Chevy Corvettes, because its usually old dudes driving them. Its such a mid-life crisis or retirement present car that I'm like "hell yeah buddy, enjoy that thing".
I did have the chance to drive one once and it was not as enjoyable as I thought, especially in heavy traffic. I look on Carvana or Carmax occasionally and there are so many used Corvettes being let go. It's really not a "wife material" kind of car.

Obscure cars that are still on the road and being driven. One of my favorite sightings (this was over 10 years ago and I still recall it) was a 1990-ish Mitsubishi Galant Sigma in beautiful condition casually parked at a shopping center. I loved those when they were new but they were never common, and hadn't seen one in ages when this vision in teal appeared...really made my day. Never saw it before that day and never saw it again, I should have left a note.
RustBucket59@reddit
I absolutely love anything air-cooled. VWs, Porsches, Corvairs. I've yet to see a Tatra in person, sadly.
sovereignpancakes@reddit
There was a T87 at an exhibit of streamlined/art deco cars that passed through a local museum some years ago. Such a distinctive machine! Smaller in person than I imagined it being.
A 603 is a bucket list item for me, especially one of the three headlight versions (which I understand there are almost none of left since they tended to go back to the factory for updates between owners).
michalfabik@reddit
I highly recommend the Tatra museum in Kopřivnice. My wife doesn't even care about cars and she said it was the best thing she saw in this country. And that was before they split it into the two sections (trucks and passenger cars).
Manderthal13@reddit
International Harvester trucks. They were always the red headed stepchild to Ford, GM and even Dodge. The only people who bought IH were farmers and mechanics because they didn't want downtime or repairs. They were willing to sacrifice looks, amenities, and power for ultimate reliability and low cost. IH is one of those 'If you know, you know' brands. Dammit they're so gosh darn cool in their awkwardness.
sovereignpancakes@reddit
Mostly true...but the early/mid 60's Travelall is a good-looking machine. That one blended the truck styling of the time with some late 50's station wagon cues and pulled it off quite well.

I love a good OBS Chevy Truck (89-98, but especially 95-98). To most people they’re nothing special, but a clean white extended cab Z71 with 33’s… oh man what a sweet ride.
RandomGuyDroppingIn@reddit
I've actually seen all four of those cars before. I had a neighbor that used to have a roughly built Cobra replica, have somehow seen three different F40s in the US, and I've been over to Japan and was fortunate enough to see both a 2000GT in a museum and a Eunos Cosmo alongside a Mazda Cosmo.
As someone whose into Corvettes and owns one, the new C8. The Corvette really should have went to mid-engine years ago. It really harkens back to all the Fieros I once owned.

Any actual performance, non stock car. So any higher variation of a Corvette, or M series, AMG, even the Infiniti Red Line is fun to see. You just see too many out in the wild. I’d add Brabus and Alpina to the list.

Same for later model VW’s like a golf r or mk4 Golf R32, Audi S or RS wagons, rs3, TTRS.
I prefer this to a Lambo or Ferrari or BMW. Living in Vancouver BC you see many young rich kids “flexing” these lambo,Ferrari, bmw etc with what’s usually parents $. Just becomes bland and tasteless after a while. Not much effort or personality in that to me.

The original Mini. Especially if it is in traffic. You get a sense of how small it is next to a F150. A Miata. Old muscle cars. Old trucks. There is a 55 Ford F100 truck on a back road a few miles from my house. The owner is doing the slowest restoration in the world.
