Some context! Apparently the humpbacks were bubble net/lunge feeding at this location (which for anyone who has ever seen this happen is in no way subtle), and despite the obvious signs of this, as well as the large amount of boaters watching in the area, these people decided to boat directly over where the whales were feeding!
It’s a good example of gross negligence at best, and knowingly doing something very dangerous at worst!
Things like this are thankfully, very rare. As a boater, as long as you give safe distance, things like this will not happen. Even if the whales approach you, the chances are very low.
If you watch the news report that someone posted here, they address this. The fisherman knew the whale was feeding and moved a safe distance away. The whale disappeared for 20 minutes and when it breeched it ended up close to them. I’m not sure what they could have done, shit happens sometimes. Best to get the whole story before making assumptions like this
You’re supposed to stay at least 100 yards away from Humpback whales in the US.
Good practice is even farther if they’re feeding! If they were the proper distance away, which they weren’t, this wouldn’t have happened! It is definitely their fault.
These people are avoiding the whales and getting 100 yards away, they don’t want to interact with the whales. They are fishing about 30 miles offshore for tuna. The fisherman find bait and start fishing and if a whale swims a mile to towards them and chooses the same pile of bait, they are not being grossly negligent. It’s not in their control.
All good! I am lucky enough to live in a part of the world with a very large amount of whales, particularly humpbacks, which is the only reason I know these things!
They’re beautiful animals, and generally slow moving and chill, despite all the videos you see online of them breaching! Though it is quite the sight when they do breach!!
But when they’re feeding, you have to be very careful and give tons of space, as they are often lunging up from beneath their food while feeding, and don’t have their normal spacial awareness of what is on the surface when they’re doing this. So getting anywhere near them while they’re feeding can be dangerous! Best viewed from afar!

Fair enough, I was just looking for my sweet internet points, I know nothing about the boat policy near humpback whales.

Whale cosplaying as Jaws. Hope the guy in the boat is OK—would be a shock for sure.
